      I question the dodge mechanic, because in the Last of Us there was no dodge mechanic. In harder modes of the first game if you were spotted you had to either run away and hide, or try to fight your way on limited resources where either you die or you come out with depleted resources, then have to deal with that for a good deal of time and encounters where if you were spotted and caught you were basically dead. Basically speaking, if you made mistakes in the first game on harder modes you were punished big time and better off restarting that section, and smart play was rewarded.
      Is there dodge spam in the harder modes of Part II making them much easier than the first game?

    The companion AI is leaps ahead of what it was in the original game. I played it on Hard and had very few instances of immersion-breaking. In the prequel the companion would run in front of enemies but that rarely occurs here. Companions will also help you unexpectedly like stealthily taking out an enemy for you if you encounter a two-man patrol. Dina also does a solid job of mirroring your position when you're hiding too.

And it would be relatively easy to implement too since the game knows where AI moves and where AI would be by the time brick could reach them way in advance.

    The first game had that same quirk w/ the friendly AI. I believe that was an intentional design choice because they felt that having an NPC break your stealth felt worse to the gameplay than a bit of immersion breaking. Think of Watchmen. It blew comics' world back then. It also resulted in some authors and editors who really didn't get why it worked, thinking all was in the deconstruction tropes, and applying that to existing characters and settings. Honestly, this is a game that's meant to be played in sessions over the course of a few weeks. It's almost structured like a season of a TV show where something big happens at the end of an episode, and you're supposed to take a few days to digest it.
    It's just waaay too exhausting to try and binge it.

      Totally agree with you here. I think the game is amazing and I'm currently playing through it a 2nd time. It took me 6 days to play through it whereas pretty much every other game I was this excited for only takes maybe 1 or 2 because I'm wanting to binge it so fast. I didn't segment my gameplay on purpose, it was because I was exhausted emotionally and I felt like my experience gained much benefit from taking time to digest major story beats over several days.

The game played on my heart strings, I pretty much smiled, laughed, cringed, and cried my way through it. Some other reviewer said it's a depressing game. Maybe that's why it hit home so hard with me. There were times I felt like writing a love letter to Naughtydog for an amazing technical achievement.

      I just got the platinum on Days Gone. I finally decided to buy it, considering the mess that TLOU2 appears to be and the fact they've spent a year updating and patching up Days Gone.
      It was AWESOME. Anyone who even has a passing interest, I say do it! Just know that it does not make a great first impression, there is jank in the cutscene (not gameplay - the gameplay is really tight, I might suggest using the "small" deadzone setting and dialing your sensitivities to taste).

    I respect ACG’s reviews a lot. You can tell he’s very passionate about gaming but having played and finishing the game. For me personally it’s nothing short of a masterpiece. Never as a game got me feeling this many emotion’s from fear to down right feeling uncomfortable. I understand the cons with the length of the game and the “padding” but the so called padding parts of the game was necessary to find and collect resources and explore the many derelict buildings plus many interesting character interactions. Which I never felt like a chore. The games combat and mobility it’s greatly improved on the original which for me felt stiff and limited. Yes the length could of been shorter yes the story could of gone in a different direction. But the flashbacks for me only got me caring about the characters more gave me a back story to them. I personally loved the space shuttle scene. The set pieces are amazing. The graphics the music score both amazing. Voice acting and the emotion in the characters faces is some of the best of seen if not the best. I could go on and on. But I feel people are not appreciating how great this game is because the way Joel died or the story direction in which you play as Abby. But to say this is a wait for sale as much as I respect ACG’s opinion i have to utterly disagree. Is the game perfect? No but for me it’s a beautifully crafted masterpiece in which will take a long time to beat.

    The Last of Us has always been a single player narrative. I still found the the sections they built in this game were so much larger than the first. True they only have one open worldish area akin to The Lost Legacy but the path they want you to follow is why you play their games. You are playing a narratively driven single player experience not an open world so I don’t think that should be a complaint personally 🤷🏽‍♂️
    I love that ND made such a challenging narrative and personally I think this game as much a masterpiece as the first even if emotionally the first left me happy and this one made me bawling like a baby lol. I also did not find pacing issues myself, I liked the out of order narrative and it helped flesh out the emotional depth of the characters pulling back the curtain bit by bit.
    Also the enemy AI is insanely hard if you played through survivor mode, which is the only mode I think both games should be played on and with no listening mode. Took me 33 hrs to beat this game on my first playthrough

      Though still not great, the companion AI has been improved leaps and bounds compared to the previous TLoU and Uncharted games. In my games, they'll actually make an effort to get out of sight of approaching enemies.
      And I could have sworn sometimes when I pushed too far with my companion, then fall back afterwards, the enemies actually spotted my companion which broke the stealth. Best part was, after all the enemies were killed, my companion actually apologized for it.

There's only been a couple of times I've felt the companion really stray out into an area that broke immersion where in the first game they'd often run around like a mad person.

    • @Hoopla10
      @Hoopla10 3 роки тому

      @@CluelessMarvin It's presumably a mix of both. Alien Isolation is probably the best developed AI tree(s) this gen and that only had to focus on one NPC (the Alien). If we want all NPC to behave realistically then it takes more computational power. Plus it takes energy and work to develop, which costs money. It's hard to sell a game on AI when pretty graphics do a better job. But we must be reaching a point of reduced benefit of visual fidelity when even TLOU2 (a this gen' game) looks really good. We saw in the Unreal Engine 5 tech demo where this is probably heading and it actually benefits development pipelines rather than overwhelms them. So hopefully a lot of publishers will start looking in other areas of development to showcase their new games. Because done well it'll not only influence every part of a game it could entirely revolutionize all games going forward.

      One of the reasons why factions was so necessary too, once you got used to the game's ai it was pretty easy. This game being entirely single player though, the difficulty isn't there. I'm doing survivor+ right now, and even though I thought I would have to sprint through sections where I got caught and be out of ammo... I really don't. You can still take 4 to 7 bullets (I play with the health bar off) and lose line of sight on enemies like a batman game, while keeping some guns fully stocked on ammo for emergencies.
      The challenge in the first game came from playing online against people, it was beautiful because unlike other games where they design it to play a certain way so it gives the game a certain feeling and then people just do what they want (battlefield games with 60% snipers and people using helicopters and jets as personal taxis)... TLOU is a survivor game where the more players scrap together "whatever works" to try and survive online, the more they try to exploit, the more immersive the game is. TLOU Factions was the game representation of the majority of online gaming, making playing online with randos feel as immersive as joining up with a sim battalion on arma because that's just how people play when left to their own devices.
      My review score of this game is truly represented by Ellie playing guitar at the end of the game. Something's missing that makes it not worth playing.

    I totally agree about the order. I think the controversy could have been completely avoided had they marketed the game as a new story for an entirely new character. “Abby”. Then maybe tease Joel and Ellie in a release trailer. Then play as Abby in the beginning, learn her motivations and attitudes then reveal that it was Joel who killed her dad and it was he who she had been looking for the whole time finally finding him. Swapping to Ellie mid game. Finding out she is on a revenge quest and realizing she’s avenging Joel. The order and pacing that killed it for me, not the story choices per se.

    I'm surprised you didn't mention the 'open world' section in Ellie's Day 1. In my opinion, that's probably the best work Naughty Dog has ever done and it really made me want a fully open world game from them. Finding the music shop, breaking into the bank, etc. Those were probably the best moments in the game.

      A lot of the areas were phenomenally immersive so just to imagine an open world game with exactly how it is that would be absolutely amazing. Dying Light is the only one close to something like that, but I love the emptiness and a lot more gritty how TLOU is.

      @Hoopla10 3 роки тому +1

      @@SugarW1thC0ffee I agree, I was constantly astonished with the amount of work that had gone into every area I passed through. The semi-open world bit I loved but how you balance that with narrative if you expand it out even further where you're no longer in full control of how the player moves around the map. I thought Horizon Zero Dawn was excellent and loved the story but it sort of fell victim of that problem where only very clear sections the story/narrative is fed to you.

    Uncharted was ~6 hours. Uncharted 3 was ~10. The Last of Us was ~13. Uncharted 4 was ~18, The Last of Us 2 is ~25. I think all of those games are amazing. But I think they have a sweeter spot back down at the 15 mark. Part 2 is definitely a longer story than 1. But much of it is that you traverse more land, whereas the first game gave you brief vignettes of the journey. Uncharted 4 was similar compared to the earlier trilogy. I really like Naught Dogs gameplay, but I think their structure works better with a shorter run time. Part 2 felt dragging to me when Ellie or Abby were by themselves. Too many grassy streets in those sections, with no good dialogue with a companion to bounce off.

    Well done review. Personally, I disagree with the pacing / story issues. I was enthralled nearly every minute and was along for the ride. However, I did experience some moments where I didn’t want to do something or I felt exhausted with the game. In reflection, I think these moments are intentional for the sake of the emotional beats ND wanted you to feel. Now, some gamers may not like this experience and it may not be for them, which I appreciate. For me, it worked. It worked so well I played it immediately a second time. It’s my #1 game of all time. Thanks for your review. I always wait patiently for your takes.

      @@toolshedvideo Death Stranding isn't boring though. That's just how some people translate "delivery man" and "walking simulator" which I guess is what you COULD boil DS down to in the simplest terms, but it's so much more than that. Every game with a human avatar has walking and traversal. Death Stranding gamefied the basic act of walking, making traversal at all stages engaging.
      As for TLOU2, I've played it now 6 times and got the plat on my 2nd run. I don't find this game exhausting at all. The audiovisual presentation is unparalleled, and I'm a PC gamer. The gameplay, while not perfect, is fantastic and fluid. Overall, I find the combat encounters to be thrilling(I'm playing on Survivor+) and just a few mechanics shy of being a perfect hybrid of stealth/melee/and gunplay. My GOTY so far, and certainly one of the best games of the generation.

    During this last console generation the tilt within the audience and industry is that a fantastic narrative can elevate a game. If that's the case, then we must also accept that a sufficiently flawed narrative can drag an otherwise incredible game.
    I believe that's what has happened here. As much as I love the gameplay and as much as I'm impressed with the technical quality, the story we're dragged through is too flawed and miserable for me to enjoy the vast majority of my time with it.
    Some people will certainly enjoy it, but, for me, I think it's a game that both myself and _The Last of Us_ would be better off without.

      Bingo.
      I never liked any of the post Jack and Daxter games from Naughty Dog because it felt like they were trying to not be videogame developers. If the hook for your product is that it's a very restrictive linear narrative, then the quality of that narrative has to be top notch.

Look at Joel from the last of us. He lost his daughter so we’ll instantly feel sympathy for him. Not because they want us to but because as humans we would normally. But at the end, he kills the doctors, stops any potential for a cure and lies to Ellie about it. What do you feel about him then. Again the beauty. The game is coherent though? Outside of the beginning and segments, you play Ellie over 3 days, with a flashback at the end of each day, then you play as Abby and iirc there's a flash back at the end of each day. Each days flashback gets closer to the present. It's honestly not than complex.
