The remaster which is free via ps+ does have the left behind 😄 still good video tho 👌 I would say this is truly your smartest written review ever 😄 you really wrote it in such a way where if you actually watch or listen to the entire video everyone gets to hear what you wanted to hear. 👍
Not sure how you can honestly recommend this. First and foremost this is the last of us to real fans. Not last of us part 1. Anyway this game is just a very expensive cash grab. The game already looked amazing and stunning and none of this was needed. You can barely tell the difference except in cutscenes. 70$ is not justifiable for what they spent hell not even 20$. Finally naughty dog after the last of us 2 debacle lost all credibility because of how bad the "sequel" was and what they did to people sharing details of the leak. This isn't worth it at all
@@moosepotato4116 difference between crybaby and not wanting to pay 70$ for a game I played 10 years ago. Go support naughty dog , be my guess. Don't act surprised when they keep releasing garbage.
Other reviewers kept confusing me, because no one was comparing this game to the masterpiece that is Robocop. Thank you for finally translating this game for the rest of us.
Everyone knew The Last of Us 1 is a brilliant game, the quality was never in question. If it was 40 dollars, we wouldn't even be here discussing. The problem here is that they are charging 70 DOLLARS for updated graphics on a game that already had a remaster before. Buying this game sets a dangerous precedent for the industry. How can people find THIS acceptable but moan and whine when EA charges 70 dollars for FIFA? Or Todd Howard charges 60 bucks for the 5th version of Skyrim.
They know some people will pay for it and then the rest will wait for a discount and buy it later on. They start with the highest price possible because they know they can make more money that way.
I don’t disagree, but for some people, this is a brand new game they haven’t experienced. It’s hard to say what is “right” and what isn’t, so obviously if the price is unreasonable, buy it when it is cheaper. That is my plan, but I can’t really attack Naughty Dog for charging the price of new game for something that can very well be a new game for some and definitely a new experience, even for veteran players. If people don’t buy, the price will reduce more quickly. I will happily keep my PS4 version until the price comes down, and if it doesn’t, I just don’t buy it. Not sure how this will affect the industry, more will be revealed.
A last gen game (it came out towards the end of the ps3, same year as ps4) doesn’t need to be remade especially when it’s not as gameplay driven like the last of us
Its worthy of $10 but $20 for PS5 because you need to pay the jim Ryan tax but because this replaced a days gone sequel and they charged $70 for a game u get for free via ps plus collection is outrageous
@@franciscofarias6385 a new game rather than a second remake would be what I want. But even that is a sketchy ask w Neil still in charge. Hopefully he moves onto tv and movies and the studio can become great again.
11 too many. kinda fascinating how they're allowing you to bypass their braindead filler "puzzles" and saying that's a feature. hey, if you wanna progress to the next level, you have to beat a low-difficulty AI at Tick-Tack-Toe 57 times. but if you find that tedious, you can always turn them off in the options. you're welcome 😎 but hey, no one's playing Last of Us for the gameplay, especially without the multiplayer included.
@@kingdavid7516 ive replayed the game about 4 times now, those ladder moments are time to breathe, the game is intense and heavy on the heart. Sometimes those ladder moments help me reflect on my thoughts about the events that happened before and how I feel about them now as I grow older with the game. This is a game where you play a villain without realizing it. Joel is a brutal man that makes selfish decisions, but its incredibly human, tragic, and downright harrowing at the same time. Would you damn the world for someone you love? In the moment, when it comes to choosing your world, your heart or the everyone else, what decision would you make? But if ladders is what breaks you then im glad you don't work in construction.
All I'll say is the greatest remake of a game and one of the best games of the last/current generation, Resident Evil 2 was 39.99€ at launch and that was built completely from the ground up besides the characters and story. Personally I don't think this is worth the asking price at 79.99€. I'll probably pick it up at some point in a deep sale. I hope most people wait for a sale and not shell out full price for this. Doing so will only embolden the current leadership of PlayStation that they can get away with such predatory practices. We've already seen so many of them implemented this generation.
Everyone’s questioning whether it’s worth the $70, which I agree with. But I’m also wondering if it’s worth the 20 hours to play through this for the 3rd time. I have so many potentially great games on my backlog that probably deserve my time more than a 3rd play through of TLOU
I think SkillUp already answered your question. It all depends on your personal view. For people who love this game and want to replay it, yes. If you don´t feel like it.. well you can wait for sale (or for used copies to be on the market) and then you will get the game for cheaper and you will be fine with the time spent there.
I don't know how relevant that question is. I think people question the $70 price tag because that's a decision Sony made that doesn't feel necessary. Whether or not you personally want to play the game would call into question if TLOU remake even deserves to exist. I think it does for audiences that haven't experienced it or love the game enough to warrant the purchase. It you don't want to play the game again, though, that's perfectly fine, but I don't think it has much weight on the game itself or the price.
I love TLOU. I bought the game full priced on PS3, the remaster on PS4, then bought it digitally for $10 after i gave my physical copy to a friend. Unlike part 2 I can replay thus game over and over. I WANT this remake. But not for $70. To anyone that is ok with it more power to you but i've played this game enough times and enough time hasn't passed were I'm nostalgic for an old game updated to look new. So i'll wait for next year's Summer sale and see what the price is then. My backlog of games means I won't need this game again for a while and I just replayed the remaster in May. Update: after watching more reviews over the last 24 hours did anyone else notice a lot of them hit a point where they say "Whether these changes are worth it to you we can not say?" Maybe if I saw it in one or two reviews it wouldn't be noticeable but there are enough reviews where they almost say the same thing it seems like it was a condition in order to get a review copy. It's not just me is it?
Same. I've platinumed it on both consoles and I still play Factions at least once a week. Won't be buying this. I also want to know if they changed any dialogue or story elements before I even try it.
@@saniakshay12 the issue is. You are being ripped off for that. There is no way this should $70, on any platform. How can anyone defend that. Its $10 more than the original launch was... "rebuilt from the ground up"? Maybe if the ground was already a mountain top... Removing the MP mode and asking for more? The game is superb we all know this. The issue is what this pricing says. We can remake old games and remove content make it look pretty then ask for MORE than when it was new. This is flat out a remaster as well not a remake. Sony having to say this isn't a rip off tells you its a rip off for new or old fans. Great game. Scummy pricing. Sony will get away with it though.
I love how since the cutscenes are in real time, you can see the bandages and wounds from your last fight visibly on joel. He was always too clean in cutscenes like he’s never been touched. Now he actually seems like he’s been through more
Once again, the graphics are amazing but that's it. No prone, no dodge, no other enhanced gameplay mechanics. RE2/3 were amazing remakes built from ground up, not this.
@@TimHawk. that’s your opinion lol. if you’re not going to buy it why do you care about features your aren’t going to play. Why do you care if someone thinks $70 is a reasonable price?
It should be free if you own the ps4 version really. I wouldn't want to pay 10% of what theyre asking. Even if it is the best game ever made, we can't just keep letting them rape us whenever they feel like it. Most game companies now are completely anti consumer and are only pro profits. So do not buy... at any price! Wait until its on ps plus monthly games next year or so.

Gears of War Ultimate Edition was sold for 40 dollars. It had new graphics, the entire multiplayer suite including the dlc maps, and the five story chapters that were originally PC exclusive. Excuse me while I roll my eyes at paying 70 dollars for a remake that isn't even a complete version of the experience released in 2013. And anyone who does, no matter how much they love the game, is paying more money for less content. The Left Behind DLC being included should be expected, not praised. The lack of its multiplayer is a joke.
@@Augustus334 Bruh, this game is not a remake. It's a remaster. The second one TLOU has had. They can slap the word "remake" on the box all they want. It's a remaster. Period.
I absolutely adored TLOU Remastered. It's one of the few games I've platinumed. But here's the thing: the asking price of TLOU Part 1 is the same as a brand new, made-from-scratch AAA, even though Part 1 is *not* brand new. They're recycling a lot of the original game (code, story, art, design, music etc). Yet going by the asking price, they're suggesting that the same amount of creativity, time & effort went into making Part 1 as the original/a new AAA game. This is clearly not true. The remake also doesn't even have the great Factions multiplayer mode that was in the original! I think there'd be far fewer complaints if they just offered some kind of upgrade path for people who own the Remaster. As it is, I think they're simply being greedy. I'll probably get it when it goes on a deep sale in a few years.
I have mixed feelings on it because I love part 1. Those facial animations are well done, the combat seems similar, but things like grabbing enemies and holding at gunpoint seem to be improved or more clearly and smoothly indicated and/or integrated into more seamless gameplay. I think people are mostly upset that they didn't make Joel more agile, (like Ellie and Abby's gameplay in part 2) which would have taken more overhaul of the game and they would have needed to change entire areas to fit a new player maneuver path. I personally could overlook it if they actually gave us a good post part 1 game (before the abysmal part 2 events...) maybe a 1.5 and incorporated everything about the combat system into it. There are ways to please the fans, if they actually want to do that, you know, and not listen to loudmouthed feminists who are obviously not the primarily consumer or fanbase. And have no business telling the rest of us what entertainment we should be enjoying.
It's most likely priced at the target market: it's for PS5, and most people can't buy a PS5 right now. the PS5 install base is full of Sony hardcore fans that all bought their console at much higher than MSRP. and there is a very good chance that they loved The Last of Us, so they will gladly pay higher than reasonable price to get it for a native game for the console they overpaid.
I know what you were up to the second you mentioned RoboCop. In a good way though, this man never fail to let everybody knows how much he loves RoboCop.
Definitely seems like this version of the game is the definitive way to play it. Though despite the graphical, accessibility and audio upgrades; I feel 50$ price tag would've been more reasonable considering alot of aspects of the game remain the same. I would certainly wait for it to be on sale or offered for free with PS+.....
I'd happily pay $100 per game for just those accessibility options, or the ones from Guardians of the Galaxy - it's hard to describe how much they made it possible to actually play them for me and I assume other people.
If it had the improved gameplay from TLOU2, and the stellar factions multiplayer, this would be a must buy for me. As it stands, I'll wait for it to come to PS plus extra.
Yeah same… they should have used this as a selling point for ps plus extra, cause a lot of people will be: „Never going to spend money on a game I already played, but if its in ps plus I‘ll give it another go“.
@@xXFallout2 yeah, i will say as a collector 70$ for a re-release of a product with slightly more quality than the previous one is actually on the cheaper end, video games surprisingly have valued remakes and remasters at pretty cheap values, like RE:2 going for 40$ while being a entitely new game or Darksouls 1 going for 50$ + a discount if you owned the original.... Not defending the 70$ price point but also i dont think its that big of a deal idk, i dont own a playstation so i aint buying this anyways lmao
I've already bought the game twice first on PS3 and then again on PS4. As much as I believe the game is a masterpiece and everyone should experience it, I never finished it on the PS4. My second attempt at a playthrough made me realise that the gameplay is just too outdated and as I already know the story, the gameplay wasn't enough to sustain me for more than a few hours. Since they didn't update the gameplay, I know I can comfortably skip this.
For me, the gameplay just compelled engagement with the story which was deeply intriguing. I couldn’t finish the initial new console remaster because the graphics were still dated, which is intolerable to me. This looks to be truly up to snuff in this respect. I’m feeling the tug.
nigga you acting like the gameplay is an outdated PS1 game lol The Last of Us was arguably one of the best graphical looking and smoothest game play experiences at the climax of the PS3. It ain't THAT outdated.
They did update the gameplay though, they just didn't add dodge and prone. I'm someone who really didn't like the gameplay in TLOU, but so far, this remake feels a million times better. The gunplay is just tighter like in TLOU2.
I love when skill up starts his review with a comparison with a movie or something. Then you know that is a review created with a severe amount of thinking.
@@Skyg4zer I mean... Is it? His point was that a visual upgrade, a new version, etc. is inherently more "worth it" to some people rather than others. Like, his review goes over how he feels they definitely put the work in to make it "worth" the price tag, but at the same time since he lacks the same level of affection for it that others do, it's not a price he would have paid of his own accord usually. I mean, it's an intentionally goofy bit, to be sure, but I'm not sure how it's an invalid comparison to explore, even facetiously, how the value of a remaster is highly influenced by how you connect with the original.
That was literally the best review in terms of comprehensively discussing the technical details and changes that the developers have made to this game that I have seen. I also like the fact that you can look at it through not only your own "lens" but frame it in how it might mean something different to others. You have done well with this review. The majority of the big reviewers could certainly learn a thing or two about how to truly articulate the detail from a gamer players perspective.
You need to check out the Digital Foundry video. That really is the best review in terms of comprehensively discussing the technical details and changes that the developers have made to this game. It goes far beyond this video.
Whats cool to me are the customization options regarding actual gameplay. I feel like this level of personal gameplay customization is where the industry is headed.
TLOU2 was industry leading at that time, for how many accessibility options they had to include hearing and vision impaired gamers. Truly inspiring, hearing a podcast from one of their head audio guys talking about the importance of accessibility in game options, and how much work they had to do but it was so worth it to him. I'm really happy they're continuing that, and I hope it leads other companies to do the same!
@@AmateurHuman19 In my written review, I pretty much gave it proper praise for the amount of accessible options on display in that game, as well as giving it props where it was needed. Mainly when the game allowed for varied encounters or even allowed you to play with situational environment moments (specifically turning the infected onto the unsuspecting WLF/Rattlers only for them to be either thinned out or too busy dealing with the chaos for you to slip on by). Which were all done competently well, in spite of my strong and ultimately stern criticism at the story/narrative components of that game.
I remember trying to convince my non gamer friend to play this game. I started to tell him the plot and he said, “so you mean it’s the same story as that van damme film Cyborg?” And I was like, erm yeah your right it is haha. So it’s a simple story that’s actually been done many times. But it’s still great.
Well, first of all it's nigh impossible to be 100% original these days, but second of all we retell the same stories over and over constantly. No a story of a middle aged man taking a teen girl under his wing during a zombie apocalypse is by no means original, but it is the way the story is told that makes all the difference.
@@PikaLink91 yeah, and this one is told with a complete disregard to the novel storytelling methods that the interactivity of videogames can bring to the table. but it's even worse than that: the dissonance between the gameplay and the story in these games is constant and inescapable.
I could give two shits about originality nowadays. I've come to accept nothing is TRULY original. I care more about the execution (pacing, characters, dialogue, art direction, etc.)
Just for reference - Yakuza 1 and 2 remakes + 3,4,5 remasters cost roughly the same. And they're re-releases of games that otherwise wouldn't be playable on ps4/5. This 'remake' launches at a higher cost, but with less content than ps3 and 4 releases, since there's no online. But look at those polygons!

This kind of stuff really sets you apart from others in the space, and I really appreciated the work you're doing with the lenses you bring.
While I love The Last of Us I still don’t think it needed another remake so soon after the previous one and the $70 price tag really solidifies that feeling for me.
So soon after? The PS4 REMASTER (not remake) was released in 2014, just over a year after the PS3 version. it has been 8 years since that came out. Technology advanced a lot in those years and you can tell that much from this version of the game.
@@YuriG03042 and hey if that’s how you feel about it by all means buy it when it releases. I personally still feel like it’s too soon for a remake and there isn’t much justification for it being $70 at launch.

I think the accessibility options are fucking awesome. It’s so diverse and varied grants everyone something to change to make it better for them. This should be looked at as THE BAR for future games.
To me "accessibility options" only exist because the game itself is unrefined and poorly made. Changing settings to remove game mechanics that you don't like is a sign the should have never been there.
@@themightycrixus1131 Not sure how that would apply to the Last of Us, which is the antithesis to unrefined and poorly made. Seeing you move from a pessimistic attitude in the lead up to this remake to a more amicable review of its triumphs is such a crazy twist, almost like a 9-iron to the face.
I love this game so much, I played it through in like three days when I first got it on the ps4, I have never felt more sadness and warmth in my body after I finished. I don’t think I will ever play it again. It has been so impactful in the way I view games. Compelling narratives that are compellingly explored and beautifully rendered. So sorry I’ll leave this comment and a like, I know you did it justice but my memory of this game is better than it ever will be for me again.
That's.. a -weird- interesting way of thinking. I mean... not saying that to judge it, I was just surprised to read it, as it's not something I've ever really considered before... that a re-play could remove some of the magic of the original memory. Hmh. Maybe there's something to that. So far when I've revisited something I experienced long ago, I've felt it has provided a new, different experience, but so far nothing has soured the original memory. The experiences exist as two individual memories. Like when I originally played Metal Gear Solid - and when I revisited it after a decade. At least I don't think it changed how I think about the first time... Or maybe it did...? But in a way, I kinda really like your way of thinking. That the great experience and memory doesn't need anything more to it and you want to preserve it... Kinda cool. :) It's actually making me re-think my "I wonder if I should re-play Zone Of The Enders again, I remember it was great".... maybe that good memory is better than the re-visit would be... idk. @@blissrunner Well something I know some people won't agree with me, but even with the newest console, if you have a PC that is good enough and a good setup, it's always better to get the PC version, even if you don't. Fair? He literally said the ps4 version facial models looked lifeless? Like...huh? The ps4 version still looks great and runs at 60 fps. Pretty disingenuous video.....imagine paying 70 dollars for a 2013 game
I think the main issue for me is the removal of factions. Reissues of previous games is nothing new (Nintendo, Rockstar, Ubisoft all have done this) The problem is its a reissue with content removed which they are probably going to sell separately, that's a tad bit scummy
Yeah and this is something I keep reading, except for the fact that Factions is coming in 2023 and not only is it going to be much bigger than the previous version but it will be standalone and not locked behind the paywall or ownership of a game. In other words Factions not being included here is a win for Playstation users because everybody whether they own this game or not will be able to play it. Or what would you prefer? This game have a barebones visual upgrade to Factions which would have delayed the game several months only to also have Factions release in 2023 something they've been working on for years? Split Sony's playerbase between people playing Factions and people playing the other Factions lol.
This is why I enjoy your reviews. You give honest, tangible feedback and thoroughly explain how you came to your conclusions. The "Robocop" comparison is brilliant in addressing the emotional connection to a product and how it impacts our perception of value. This is a fantastic game and I recommend everyone play it... just not at $70. Logically, this would tell the industry they could continue to give us less and charge more as long as they hit us in the feels. This game at this price point is not equivalent to an IP built specifically for this generation of gaming releasing at the same price point. Personally, $60 should remain the ceiling for new titles with physical release, especially in this digital world with higher profits for publishers.
I think $50 to $70 is a good price range for AAA games. If the game truly deserves it then yeah $70 lets go for it. But I don't like them abusing the $70, titles like NBA2K and the Madden Games are going for $70 when they really should be sticking to $50.
I would not mind the $70 if it was a good game. But i feel like the gaming industry is just so risky atm for a $70 buy. So many games ask for this price but have cut content, miss features, bad stories you name it. And i am not even talking about battlepasses, cash shops and any other monetization ways. It is just so hard to know if a game will live up to the quite large spend (for most people) of $70. So ye i mostly opt out of games that cost this much. The best solution, make games with expansions. Sell your game for 40/50 and release an expansion for 20/30 (pretty much like monster hunter does). This way you get the price from people and it does not feel like such a high price.
@@NrettG no game is worth $70 stop being a fucking parroting shill. The profits for games have been nonstop breaking records AND physical sales are dwindling. (Thus cheaper to produce/more profits) I absolutely hate you people for eating up the BS Sony shits out.

so, you're having financial troubles, but the people who developed the game aren't? everyone is experiencing inflation, and to argue consumers shouldn't have to be affected by it and business' should.. well, it's not even a question.. money is worth less now, everything costs more, for everyone.. why don't we talk about why we're tetering on the edge of hyperinflation and who's responsible for it and why theyre doing it, instead of blaming video game devs who are also victim.. smdh
Shillup jokes aside, I played and platted this game on both PS3 at release and PS4 too. I don't think I want to pay $70/£65 for the same game again on PS5.
ya know, I get what your saying in regards to your Robocop analogy. But I need to point out that Robocop came out in 1987. That's over 35 years, so a great deal of time separates the various re-releases. Having three releases of a game in just a tad over nine years is a bit different. And as you pointed out in your new Robocop collectors edition. It came with all sorts of extras, including a really nice collectors box. This title is seventy bucks and that is just a regular case and the game. I don't even know if there is some sort of cover art poster folded up in the case. Also, while it is true that the game might generate new fans when the TV show comes out. Those new fans will not pay what the rest of us might pay now. Because by the time the TV show airs several months will have past and the price will have dropped.
The Last of Us is absolutely my Robocop and I know that for me, I am willing to pay the price tag to re-experience one of my favorite games of all time in a newer, more polished way. That being said, I also completely understand why its not for everyone, at least not at $70. Hopefully the remastered PS4 version sticks around for a while as an alternative. The accesibility features are great though and I hope that this will be a solid option for new fans looking to jump into the series! Great review!
No they're absolutely should not let you play how you want unless it's part of the design of the game. You can't play football or basketball how you want...
There are multiple kind of games. While Minecraft should try its best to absolutly let u play how you want to play, Nier Automata shouldnt. While a heavy story driven game like Last of Us can make it work to let you play how you want, a strategy game shouldn't. Designing and balancing a game is such a difficult task to do right, giving the player the ability to mess with everything around can destroy the whole experience without the player even noticing
The fact that they re-named it "Part 1" disgusts me. I'm just glad they never made a disgusting, depressing meandering sequel that crushes favorite characters and forces bizzare narratives down you throat. 😮💨
I love your reviews. I love the relatability of your commentary and the explanation of your perception of value. That being said, $70 for an existing IP is simply bullshit.
So, this game is better because it looks nicer and has built in options that would allow you to essentially skip aspects of the intended original design of the game? And this is worth the money?
I feel accessibility options shouldn't be something to celebrate in the review when they are put behind a paywall That said the massive graphics and slight ai improvement is worth a lot though I doubt it's worth 70$ feels better to wait for a price drop
I just wrapped up part one after playing part two earlier this year. If you are at all a fan of this series. BUY THIS. It is the BEST way to play this game and I was blown away by the whole game. I hadn’t played TLOU in 5 years but this was a fantastic way to revisit the game, especially ahead of TLOU HBO for instance. It’s worth it if you’re a fan and you haven’t played it recently or if you’re brand new!
@@g-luisy5253 in australia it’s about 110 as well, it’s expensive for a game but it’s not a massive amount of money lol like it doesn’t take long to get $100
I watched a playthrough of TLOU all the way back in 2013 when the game first came out, I quite enjoyed the story at the time but I can only remember some of the major beats of the story, so I am quite interested in playing through it for myself when it comes to PC.
I played the original when I had just come home from Afghanistan. I'm sure it has something to do with my connection to the game, but I almost had tears in my face from the music in this review alone. The scene where Joel's daughter dies is so perfect that I almost have skip it during replays. The fact that you actually don't have to kill the doctors in the final scene is amazing. In my first playthrough I was so angry that those doctors didn't get a chance. All that aside, there is no way I'm paying that kind of money for a reskin
That prologue is why I make sure to never recommend Last of Us to anyone who is a parent. Even if its fiction that is some heavy ass shit for any parent to play through in a game.
For $70 this game could have used new weapons, couch co-op, flame throwers, new enemies, proning, mutliplayer, updated puzzles, cinematic kills in slo mo, there is so much they could have done....for $70.
Here me out here : I believe that remasters and remakes are rarely for the fans and more for the people who missed them the first time around, either because they didn't own the console or they were too young (we're talking about a nearly 10 years old game here). I'm a big fan of the Last of Us serie, but I have no intention of buying this. In my memories, the PS3 version looks the same as the PS5 version because at the time, it was some of the best graphics around and "best graphics" is what my brain remembers. I am still happy that this game exists. Games are very costly to make these days and I much rather they make their extra cash by rereleasing old games than filling their games with micro-transactions.
you have a point, but yet here we are with the same people who played the original buying the reskin. the game isnt even that old. I would understand this perspective with an actual old game, like the system shock remake.
I feel we reached a level of graphical fidelity where every great game can be "immortalised". There are a lot of games that just didn't look good enough to still be relevant in for example 10 years. Personally, I'm all for the remakes. Keep em coming....
You make an excellent point. I’m not gonna tell someone who may have never played tlou when it first came out to skip on this version. It could very well be the best way to experience Part 1s story. However if Naughty Dog think, for even a second that every fan are going to go out and buy a $70 game. One that they have most likely already experienced, just because this one is the one everyone tends to like better. Then they are delusional.
We should question why it is a game being "nearly 10 years old" makes it inaccessible to new players when the PS4 remake exists and more people still own a PS4 over a PS5, plus ports and back-compat exists.
No. It's for greedy publishers who know they could vomit out a remake with little to no effort and the masses will lap it up like the mouth-breathing chimps they are.
Time and time again, you always remind me of why your reviews are the only ones I trust. Been with you since the division days, been great to watch your channel grow.
Thanks for the review. I appreciate the “This looks awesome, but it’s not my jam” viewpoint. It seems more genuine than a review from a fanboy of the series. I might take a look at this on PC.
I think the quality of the remake was never under the question, right? It was pretty clear after that behind the scenes kind of video they dropped that they worked really hard on this game. The first problem is the price tag, they are asking for way too much. And the 2nd problem is a bit more subjective but is it worth spending another 20-25 hours on a game you've already played at least 2-3 times by this point?
Sony is really pushing the line in how much they can squeeze out of gamers. Let's not enable them or they will continue to push the line. Think of where we would be right now if we let Xbox back in 2013 get away with DRM consoles and digital-only.
The behind the scenes video definitely oversold it though. They say it's rebuilt entirely for PS5, but realistically it was rebuilt entirely for PS4, it uses tons of TLOU 2 assets, but it has Haptic Feedback, 3D Audio and the Tension Triggers, 2 of those 3 are gimmicks and also wouldn't be hard to add, the audio would have been redone with the visuals anyway. Now this is totally fine to make a game like this, just don't lie about it, they are already in hot water for lying so much about TLOU 2. I definitely want to buy it on PC for the right price.
But what exactly is the problem with the price tag? I also would not buy it for 70$ but Games drop extremely fast in price so just wait and after a few month it will be 20-30$.
the game is CONSTANTLY on sale in the PlayStation store. I got it for $40 and it’s consistently at that price-point whenever it’s on sale (which is often)
The fact that we currently leave in a world where everyone is afraid to share their opinion, of fear of attacks from random people on the internet, that u have to carefully pick up words and how to say it. Sad state of the world
"I dont like the looting, puzzles, or the shooting mechanics" thats crazy bro thats literally the whole gameplay loop. You might as well just watch the TV show because it doesn't sound like the game is for you 😅. Accessibility features are nice but not $70 nice. How about make sliders that change the game dramatically. How about a toggle that spawns infected constantly to add pressure at all times, or being able to up the number of infected/bandits to make it more interesting. The game is on ps5 hardware when it was intended for ps3 capabilities they can do more then tweak graphics and accessibility for $70
The other aspect - and the one that gives an awful lot of context to the remake's existence - is that this version of TLoU is reportedly also coming to PC. An awful lot of people who haven't been able to play the game up to now are going to have the opportunity to.
And hopefully they all realize this road leads to nowhere and don’t bother buying. I’d never recommend tlou to anyone for the same reason I wouldn’t recommend lost or game of thrones. Everything great that’s there is eviscerated by the end and you just end up wondering why you wasted your time on this thing in the first place when it’s over.
If someone's had to wait until a hypothetical PC port to play a game this old, surely at some point you would just watch a Lets Play of it? the actual gameplay is really not that exciting, it's very bog standard stealth killing and cover shooting
@@Mantrahiroshima You people are so dramatic, my god I didn’t like TLoU2, but I still enjoy TLoU1 just fine. The second one doesn’t ruin the first at all and if it does for you then you are WAY to sensitive over fictional stories There are also plenty of people that enjoyed the second one, including the person you are replying to.
I’m finding it really hard to adjust downgrading from LoU2 combat. I kinda feel like they really should have added the new mechanics even if it means changing the level designed.
As usual, being a patient gamer rewards you. Never played TLOU. Wanted to play it when TLOU2 came out. Now my patience is rewarded. Am I gonna buy this? No. I'm gonna wait for TLOU1 and 2 combined pack releasing on PC.
Gotta say, the options sound great. That large array of options and customization is why I like PC gaming. Cool to see something like that in a console game. Also proves that having these options do not, in any way, take away from the core game.
This feels like a dark souls jab. Adding this level of customization would take away from Dark souls. Not everything needs this level of accessibility features.
@@gachafiedstreams It didn't take long for one to come out of the woodwork. You don't have to use the settings. Imagine I hacked my copy of a Souls game to add the accessibility features I wanted. How would that change your enjoyment of it? This is elitist gatekeeping at its worst.
@@gachafiedstreams lol is there anything more sensitive than a Dark Souls fan? I hate to break this to you, but this level of customization and accessibility already exists for Dark Souls on PC. Either way, any game with a HUD should have HUD options. Having the option to highlight previously collected items or auto loot really helps additional playthroughs. Great review mate! Happy to see the game that is indeed my Robocop getting a glow up that makes use of my new hardware. Accessibility options, AI overhaul, expanded NG+, and dualsense haptics are more than enough to justify my purchase. Now I can play both Part 1 and Part 2 at 1440p 60fps on my PS5.
I bought a OLED TV (lg C1) along with this game. With the upgraded graphics for the PS5 and the quality of the LG C1, man I'm blown away. Definitely was worth the money
Awesome review as always. IMO, even if it's marketed as a remake, this feels more like a second remaster, and I can completely understand why so many are looking at it as a $70 cash grab. A "remake" to me is something like FF7 to FF7 (2020), or CoD4 to MW (2019), where the effort involved is equivalent to creating a new game, since that's literally the case. Here, the bones of the game were already there since a decade ago, and the vast majority of the code is probably reused; they just put on a new coat of paint and some features that are expected by default in a remaster. Personally, no way I'm paying full price when I already have the PS3 and PS4 version, especially when graphics aren't what made the original great in the first place.
Definitely! If you’re going to charge a full price game and you started with a game that was already built… You have to do more than beautify it! If you beautify it only then charge $30… But if you beautify it and update the game play like it’s a new game than it’s worth $70!
Crash bandicoot 40$ 3 game spyro trilogy 3 game 40$ on ps3 sly cooper trilogy was 45 or 50$, cmon bruh without multiplayer 70$ you are lying to us this game is a 40$ on steam day 1
I don’t care if it’s the best looking game of the decade. There is no reason this remaster should cost the same as the full blown sequel. Especially when I can just play the original the same platform already.
The Robocop analogy is actually the first time someone has been able to explain this game in a way that makes sense. Because of course, if you love a game or a movie or an album that much, you'll buy the super duper remake with HD/4K/60fps visuals, of course you'd buy the album and the vinyl and reprinted vinyl with additional tracks. Personally, I've just never been that into Last of Us. It took me a long time to even finish the first one, and I still haven't finished the second one. They're just not my thing. And that's fine, because it's a lot of peoples thing, and for a lot of people they'll have some figure in their head of what they'll pay for a really respectfully well done remake of something they love. And probably, for everyone else, it WILL end up being a PS+ premium game in a couple years. I've never got behind the "cheap cashgrab" mob gathering around this game, it's clear it's more than just an HD remake. I've personally always sat behind the "it's too soon" mob. It's one thing to pay $100 for a remaster of a 30 year old movie, it's another to charge $70 for a remake of a 9 year old game that already had a remastered version. It would be like Rockstar charging that much for PS5 GTA 5 when they've already cashed in on the original PS3 release, and PS4 remaster.
But it is just an HD remake. That's the thing.Accessibility deaturs don't matter much to the majority of people. The facial animations aren't all that improved(watch a video comparison, don't take my word for it),So yeah, just a facelift when you get down to the basics, nothing additional added. Also the robocop analogy falls flat i think,it only applies to the most hardcore of hardcore, but that's not most of us now is it?
The analogy, while effective, is also a bit misapplied. Movies and games are different mediums and so are the expectations of fans of both mediums. If a remastered version of a film came out and changes were made to the story, cinaphiles would likely be in a uproar. They would demand the original theatrical version unless it was clear the additions made the movie better or better reflected the original intent of the director. Even then many would demand the original cut be made available in some way. Gamers, as this incident shows, sometimes expect gameplay changes or even additions as that as seen as meaningful improvement. A perceived mere fresh coat of paint is not seen favorably usually.
@@joelshajan4996 if that’s not enough for you to buy it, then I’m just going to say this. If you look at this game and you don’t get why it’s priced that high, this game was not made for you. It’s not made for me either! Why complain? Just don’t buy it. Vote with your wallet like everyone else.
The one thing TLOU1 really needed was the combat being remade, in my mind. Looks pretty and all but considering I've played through this game about 8 times, a graphical paint job doesn't make me want to go through it again. I get that it's a lot of work, but it's a half a remake in that respect. That said, it's one of the best stories in gaming and if this release cues people to experience it for the first time, then I'm for it.
For me it is sad how the faces have improved immensely, but the bodily gestures basically stayed the same. Look at the scene comparison with old and new Tess (14:20). That pointing motion is the same limp point and wave. No feeling of weight or tension. Or right after, when Tommy holds the door shut. His face says "struggle", his body says "damn those zombies are pushing less than a summer breeze"
Great review as per usual. I am still very unconvinced that it deserves the title of "remake" though. Like, all the things that are made better is done by a typical remaster? It's probably just because they already done a remaster and didn't have the guts to say that's what it is again.
I don’t know, I know the gameplay is ultimately the same but i think the graphical and audio changes are too much to be called remasters. It’s not new textures and a bump in resolution, it’s new models, new lighting engine, new everything. Even the non new stuff like the mocap (new meaning newly remade, not stuff not present in the original) is massively enhanced, the new models have taken the exact same mocap work and made it look like it was recaptured. It’s still expensive, it’s still sad the combat stuff didn’t get redone but I think this deserves to be called a remake.
Imagine creating a new game instead of just making the same game 3 times and asking for money for each subsequent re release...Cheeky cnts. Don't buy it out of principle... unless you really want them to be making another GTAV for the PS7 in 10 years?

Not sure how you can honestly recommend this. First and foremost this is the last of us to real fans. Not last of us part 1. Anyway this game is just a very expensive cash grab. The game already looked amazing and stunning and none of this was needed. You can barely tell the difference except in cutscenes. 70$ is not justifiable for what they spent hell not even 20$.
How is it a precedent? Not like gta and skyrim aren’t going for full price without any substantial upgrade
The question was never really whether the game would be good, but whether it would be $70 good.
that isnt a question skill up can answer for you, and it never was. all depends on what the last of us means to you
I mean, it's TLOU. What else do you want? If the game is not for you, maybe because you already have the PS4 version, go buy a different game.

Exactly.
Everyone’s questioning whether it’s worth the $70, which I agree with. But I’m also wondering if it’s worth the 20 hours to play through this for the 3rd time. I have so many potentially great games on my backlog that probably deserve my time more than a 3rd play through of TLOU
Of course it is it's a great game
I think SkillUp already answered your question. It all depends on your personal view. For people who love this game and want to replay it, yes. If you don´t feel like it.. well you can wait for sale (or for used copies to be on the market) and then you will get the game for cheaper and you will be fine with the time spent there.
Probably just wait a year or two when the game's on sale or free on PS Plus. $70 is a pretty steep price with inflation and stuff going on.
Imagine if you had played this game a dozen and a half times like I did and get asked that same question.
No way is it worth 70 dollars. That's just ludicrous!!
Its the same game with some mild plastic surgery but you do you lmao
@kmj2318 no, it's not. this is just a layer of new paint. almost everything else is the same. so no, it is not the same value that got you Part II.

Played it. The graphics are ok but the gameplay is literally the same, nothing really noteworthy that’s new
The gameplay is still amazing and the combat isn’t outdated at all tf? Lol. The only thing outdated about it is the lack of a prone button that’s it.
nigga you acting like the gameplay is an outdated PS1 game lol The Last of Us was arguably one of the best graphical looking and smoothest game play experiences at the climax of the PS3. It ain't THAT outdated.
They did update the gameplay though, they just didn't add dodge and prone.
I'm someone who really didn't like the gameplay in TLOU, but so far, this remake feels a million times better. The gunplay is just tighter like in TLOU2.

Whats cool to me are the customization options regarding actual gameplay.
I feel like this level of personal gameplay customization is where the industry is headed.
I agree but it's not worth 125 aud maybe 70 aud if that
TLOU2 was industry leading at that time, for how many accessibility options they had to include hearing and vision impaired gamers. Truly inspiring, hearing a podcast from one of their head audio guys talking about the importance of accessibility in game options, and how much work they had to do but it was so worth it to him.

I love this game so much, I played it through in like three days when I first got it on the ps4, I have never felt more sadness and warmth in my body after I finished. I don’t think I will ever play it again. It has been so impactful in the way I view games. Compelling narratives that are compellingly explored and beautifully rendered. I don’t want to re experience it with a more critical lens. So sorry I’ll leave this comment and a like, I know you did it justice but my memory of this game is better than it ever will be for me again.
I completely relate. There are just some games that, for the best reasons, you never wanna play again.
That's.. a -weird- interesting way of thinking. I mean... not saying that to judge it, I was just surprised to read it, as it's not something I've ever really considered before... that a re-play could remove some of the magic of the original memory.
Kinda cool. :)
It's actually making me re-think my "I wonder if I should re-play Zone Of The Enders again, I remember it was great".... maybe that good memory is better than the re-visit would be... idk.

Thank you for doing this and for also validating my long held view that Robocop is the greatest. Let's hope that the upcoming game is.
ya know, I get what your saying in regards to your Robocop analogy.
For $70, people expect TLOU3. Not a fucking remake of a remaster.
The Last of Us is absolutely my Robocop and I know that for me, I am willing to pay the price tag to re-experience one of my favorite games of all time in a newer, more polished way.

Thanks for the review. I appreciate the “This looks awesome, but it’s not my jam” viewpoint. It seems more genuine than a review from a fanboy of the series. I might take a look at this on PC.
My favourite part of TLOU is when Joel shaved the front half of his hair became a robot-cop hybrid

@@envoyofrot7046 that's what I tell people. You don't have to spend 70$ on it, just wait for some time and it'll drop in price.
I can’t wait to replay this again with the fresh coat of paint. Looks stunning.
the game is CONSTANTLY on sale in the PlayStation store.
The game is on ps5 hardware when it was intended for ps3 capabilities they can do more then tweak graphics and accessibility for $70
I have never played this game. Crazy right? So im going to experience it on PS5 with this version. It works out perfectly for me.
It's okay. I barely got past the beginning of Last of Us. So I'll finally play it in full on the ps5
You could always get the ps4 version free with ps plus. Use a free trial if you don't have it. Same game, has mutiplayer and your not wasting 70 quid.
I wish I could play it again for the first time. Have fun bro
I mean you can get for $20 and wait to pay less for a graphical upgrade. But it's your money do whatever you want.
How dare you!!!!!😂
I can't say i agree, putting a graphic patch and accessibilty options behind a 70 euro fee is scummy.
Use a ps3 emulator and be happier.

You people are so dramatic, my god
I didn’t like TLoU2, but I still enjoy TLoU1 just fine. The second one doesn’t ruin the first at all and if it does for you then you are WAY to sensitive over fictional stories
There are also plenty of people that enjoyed the second one, including the person you are replying to.
@@Mantrahiroshima you can play tlou 1 and miss out on 2. They're 2 different games
Great review. I will be passing until it goes on sale, but your review gave me a lot to look forward to.
Man, with how much they shit on the second game, the first game doesn’t even matter anymore. RIP TLOU.
only real answer.
see you out on the range 🙋♂🏄♂🏄♀🌊
I’m finding it really hard to adjust downgrading from LoU2 combat. I kinda feel like they really should have added the new mechanics even if it means changing the level designed.
So they didn't include all of the combat systems of Pt2?
@@LiquidSnake1988 no the combat is exactly the same as the original game, its literally just a graphics upgrade
I kept trying to dodge lol
No, Joel being able to dodge would eliminate so much tension
@@torxx12 the gunplay is significantly better honestly. Not saying it’s worth $70 but it feels better to play
As usual, being a patient gamer rewards you. Never played TLOU. Wanted to play it when TLOU2 came out. Now my patience is rewarded. Am I gonna buy this? No. I'm gonna wait for TLOU1 and 2 combined pack releasing on PC.
Ha. I'm more patient than you. I'm on my first playthrough of Witcher 1
Gotta say, the options sound great. That large array of options and customization is why I like PC gaming. Cool to see something like that in a console game.
Also proves that having these options do not, in any way, take away from the core game.
IF you have the time to put in to those options
I don't know how you could argue with me on that.
@@TheDisgruntledImperial the only people that cry about gatekeeping are people who should be gatekeep, nothing wrong with barriers of intros to keep certain bad actors out 🤷
wait i just learnt this is $125 AUD??? How is there not riots in the streets, I thought the sony ponys were just talking about some deluxe edition but they are willingly defending this price?
You sir are the benchmark for honest and in depth game reviews

Great review mate! Happy to see the game that is indeed my Robocop getting a glow up that makes use of my new hardware. Accessibility options, AI overhaul, expanded NG+, and dualsense haptics are more than enough to justify my purchase.
Now I can play both Part 1 and Part 2 at 1440p 60fps on my PS5.
Never played the original so I'm down for this. This looks dope
I bought a OLED TV (lg C1) along with this game. With the upgraded graphics for the PS5 and the quality of the LG C1, man I'm blown away. Definitely was worth the money
LG Oled with PS5 is a fabulous combo.
The fact that disability options are 70 feels scummy like a disability tax almost if it was 50 it would be different
It definitely is a scam
I just think that if they were going this far, they should have done more for gameplay.
that would require actual work
Definitely! If you’re going to charge a full price game and you started with a game that was already built… You have to do more than beautify it! If you beautify it only then charge $30… But if you beautify it and update the game play like it’s a new game than it’s worth $70!
As much as I love TLOU, I waited to find a copy at a very sexy $20
It's seems Shill-up is back again....it's like a Dr Jekyll Mr Hyde situation here
I'll get it when it's on sale for 25 bucks
Crash bandicoot 40$ 3 game spyro trilogy 3 game 40$ on ps3 sly cooper trilogy was 45 or 50$, cmon bruh without multiplayer 70$ you are lying to us this game is a 40$ on steam day 1
I don’t care if it’s the best looking game of the decade. There is no reason this remaster should cost the same as the full blown sequel. Especially when I can just play the original the same platform already.
I see you’ve taken some bribes from Sony.
this is why he's called Shill Up
The Robocop analogy is actually the first time someone has been able to explain this game in a way that makes sense.
TL;DW: If you've never played it before, this is the best place to start. If you have, watch a let's play, cuz the presentation is where it's at.
The game is amazing and I can't wait to buy it a 3rd time in a deep sale.
*Cash Cow* pure and simple
For me it is sad how the faces have improved immensely, but the bodily gestures basically stayed the same. Look at the scene comparison with old and new Tess (14:20).
That pointing motion is the same limp point and wave. No feeling of weight or tension. Or right after, when Tommy holds the door shut. His face says "struggle", his body says "damn those zombies are pushing less than a summer breeze"
You do realize this is mocap right?
@@lotus2001 yes, but they updated the mocap from the faces, but not the bodies. So now there is a disconnect in the body and face language
Buy it if you want, but I recommend not feeding predatory industry practices by avoiding paying full price for this game.
Great review as per usual. I am still very unconvinced that it deserves the title of "remake" though. Like, all the things that are made better is done by a typical remaster? It's probably just because they already done a remaster and didn't have the guts to say that's what it is again.
U are not right in the head, kid.
@@muchacamara True, but that's besides the point.
People like you would have complained if they changed it too much also.
