Last Jedi was poor storytelling that doomed the sequel franchise, but at least we have The EU. The sequels were shitty from the start so ok then

And Batman V. Superman of contrivances and stupid reversals of character motivations. The story is god awful and people are really expressing that on release day with the full game on display through UA-cam now.

Calling The Last of Us a series is a bit of a stretch with the second game still waiting for launch. Either way your still right the sequel going to be a disappointment.
Clearly the original game was written more as a one and done game with great story rather than every expanding franchise that it's getting forced into.

Joel’s past is a better idea IMO, how he survived, how he and Tommy fell apart and became separated and how he met Tess etc, it would be better.

...did you not experience Joel's arc?
His hospitality is part of his growth, throughout the course of the first game he grows to be more selfless and regains his humanity through his developing bond with Ellie and by the end of it he's a much more vulnerable and human character.
If he didn't have that bond with Ellie, if he stayed the same person he was in the beginning of Part 1, if he didn't open himself back up to the world and became a more empathetic person, he would not have trusted Abby for sure.
But, that's only if he would've gone through the effort of saving Ellie, and if he were the same unempathetic and grizzled old man he was in the beginning, he would not have gone through with emptying that hospital for her sake.

Him trusting people who seemingly aren't attempting to harm him does not make him a moron, he trusted Sam and Henry pretty damn quickly after all.

I just recently found some people anonymously breaking the embargo conditions online. The leaks were 100% true. So yeah those comparisons work perfectly. Joel is getting the Luke Skywalker treatment, Ellie actually is like Daenerys in the dumbest way possible, the game absolutely revels in "subversion" and just dismantling everything it had set-up so far, it revels in the hope of pissing off its own fans, and it does it all whilst pretending to be deep. What's so stupid is the game even treats itself that way. The story ends with a giant "everything you did was for nothing" and I don't mean in like a deep, reflective way (I guess kind of like the way the first game ended), but rather in a nihilistic "we want you to piss away your time because we're so artsy" way. Oh and let's not forget all the really shallow, shoehorned political agenda-peddling that's in this game too.

The gameplay looks amazing: the graphics, the sounds, the combat mechanics and how *violently* brutal it supposedly is, the facial animations both in cutscenes and when you kill people, the environmental designs, the sense of tension out in the world during exploration, the enemies. But that story. How can you create one of the arguably best-looking games on the PS4 but do THAT to the story? Why did Neil Druckmann have to make Anita Sarkeesian his role model? I mean, even the part in the leaks about Dina being pregnant was true, but Dina calls the kid Ellie's kid when the actual father (Jessie) literally sacrificed himself to save them. Tf even is this game??

Read Dead mocks the idea of revenge and through the horrible, inevitable outcome, it shows that there is never any winning and there is no one who can grow from it. The Last of Us 2 seems to encourage it so that it can develop other characters upon the arrival of the revenge’s climax. It’s pathetic really.

@@reslaega6134 gameplay is fun tho. If you mute dialogue and skip the cutscenes, its a great game. Plus, theyve added a roguelike mode that has no story and is heavily gameplay focused (and you can play as joel)

lol. that's what made it so great about the story in the first one. Joel's affection for ellie as his daughter and everyone talks about ellie being special but she wasn't special because she was immune. she was special because someone truly cared for her to the point of dooming the only chance to give humanity a chance for a cure. a happy bittersweet ending. this sequel was unneeded to an otherwise good game.
The idea of synthesising a cure from Ellie is nonsense. There is no way to mass produce a vaccine in the last of us. There are no working factories. There is no industry anymore. It would have never worked. Not only that how are they supposed to distribute it across the country? Not only would it not have worked Ellie would have died also. But at this point Joel probably should have let her die for nothing anyway. I’d also like to note the vaccine is more than likely useless for the majority of people who have been infected for a long time and fully transformed.

My biggest issue with the game was how halfway into the game you suddenly start playing as Abby.
I immediately understood what the game was trying to do, which was subsequently confirmed by further research.
Neil Druckmann wanted the player to empathize with Abby so that the weight of your actions as Ellie came heavily after everything you had to do to go after this girl.
Unfortunately, I hated it. Forming a bond with Abby at that point was nigh impossible after all that's happened in the first game with Joel and Ellie and the way Abby brutally murdered him for it.
I just couldn't give two shits about her or her friends at that point and wanted them all to die so that the story reached its conclusion.
IF, however, Neil Druckmann was a bit more clever about it; if he had made us play as Abby right from the start, concealing the fact that the person we are after for revenge is our loved and beloved Joel all the while we are playing as her, helping her succeed in her quest, only to reveal the shocking truth and the bloody murder of Joel at her hands at the end, AND THEN started playing as Ellie halfway through the game would have made this a dramatically better story.
1- That is one hell of a twist and a massive shock for the audience.
2- It would actually have achieved Neil's aim of bonding us with Abby so that our revenge run as Ellie felt heavier and more impactful.
It's not a bad game or a story per se, but I just felt disappointed with the way everything went down somehow.
Can't help but feel the above solution would have made this a dramatically better narrative.

Fair and respectful point. But I think that would have given the game a specific angle adjacent to the one we do get. That angle is partly what you get with Ellie, and already got as Joel in the first game. You start with sympathy, etc.
Knowing who Abby is theoretically shouldn't make a difference in the world because all the survivors have descended into chaos as people and as a society. Abby is really no different than Joel. Joel killing Abby's dad makes him the villain to Abby. And I think the point is to realize Abby's humanity as you play her. It goes on for a long time because it is something they anticipated would take a long time to come to grips with. And through that play you also see how Ellie's killing of Abby's clan just compounds her pain and rage.
In the end I dont love the character of Abby like I do Ellie and Joel. But I sure learned to sympathize and empathize with her. But I also can see why that would be a hard thing to do for others.

The vitriolic reaction so many have had to a game that tries to get players to experience empathy in uncomfortable ways makes it a good example of how important stories like this are in helping people see a better way to live life. But video games also have the potential to transcend what novels and films can do by letting the player become the character or characters, themselves. Being able to actually control the character just brings the experience home in such a unique way.

Never thought about this, but I actually agree with you that that might have been the better option. Abby and her friends needed time to sit in the minds of gamers, and this way would have provided it. Neil underestimated the bond players had with Joel from the first game. To kill him (especially like that) and place us in the shoes of the one who did it…most people wouldn’t be able to empathize
The worst thing about this game for me is how desparate the developers seemed to get an emotional reaction for the sake of it. Without spoiling the story, there's a couple of moments where the story is trying to twist an emotional dagger into you to make you feel sad or guilty for what's happened, but it's so unnecessary that it took me out of the experience and made me angry that the developers went to such lengths to try and make me feel depressed at the end of the experience.

@@PixelPioneer23-q5p I'll give you a couple of examples, one for forcing positive emotion, and one for negative. The part with Abby's dad trying to rescue the animal, such an obvious forced ploy to make you try to see what a good guy he is, and what a good girl Abby is. Second, when Ellie kills the pregnant girl, that was to force the feeling of what a terrible thing Ellie has done, unforgivable. This game is heavy handed, and distasteful, there is no nuance. Many will say it's provocative and daring, yet I say that is such an easy thing to do. Think of the most shocking scenario, and put into an entertainment medium.
He basically just confirmed the leaks by saying we won't like the game because of the 2nd half.

I can't even fathom that opinion. This is game is a masterpiece in every aspect. The story was gripping and uncomfortable, the environments were gorgeous, detailed and allowed for all sorts of movement, the gameplay was brutal, challenging and rewarding. I've never been more sad for a game to end. And I've never been more engaged and on the edge of my seat, a stunning achievement all around.

Same. I was completely exhausted by the game by the 12-14 hour mark. I didn’t want to play anymore. It was a brutal additional 14 hours to play through. It made me hate the game so much.

And still, not the real problem. It the writing had been solid, and if it had been true to the characters, it doesn't matter how dark it got, it would never have been hated so much.

I can't stand this recent trend of taking beloved stories and either making us feel bad for loving them, or twisting them so badly that we can't recognize what we loved in the first place. It's such a cheap trick that story tellers use when they don't have anything unique to say; they only know how to react to something great that came before it.

Joe Abercrombie's fantasy books, specifically Best Served Cold for those book nerds out there. Loved and enjoyed it, but by the end of it it kind of hurts to read because of what the characters are going through.

All the critics praised the game and gave it high ratings, praised the story for being brave and subversive. You know. It's customary when a game has LGBTQIA injected into the narrative somewhere. I commend the fewer number of critics that weren't afraid to dump on the game, like Skill Up and Angry Joe.
Look at how many awards the game got. Surely the protected stance is that the game is amazing.
I actually ended up losing the final "battle" a couple times. Was it because it was hard? No. I was just hoping for some alternative to what the developers were forcing me to do. By the end of the game, I was so sick of how desperately the developers wanted everyone in that game to just be awful that I was done... sitting there thinking "can't any of you show even a sliver of the humanity that the first game delivered so well?" Nope.

Which kicks off around a character everyone hates getting revenge and then being the better off for it versus Ellie who is left with even less than what she started with.
Revenge stories can be done really well if done right, New Vegas when you’re shot in the head, robbed and left for dead just trying to do your job it makes you want to find that punk ass bitch that shot you with a 9mm. When I first got to the casino to confront Benny I had my big guns ready, all saved up, grenades and flamethrower a blazing in my black combat armor I melted everyone in the casino including that prick. It was incredibly satisfying and I’ll never forget it, denying the player that revenge is not the point of a game, it may make you think more but your certainly not going to be as satisfied as letting emotion take over and dealing with the consequences of your choices.

And because I didn't mainline the story and did a lot of side stuff. That's the problem with Bethesda games. They have a story that is supposed to be urgent yet you can get lost for a hundred hours doing side stuff. Still though Fallout New Vegas was amazing and had amazing writing.

Not true at all.. I can list a dozen Korean movies that are totally about vengeance and are just sensational, starting from Park Chan Wook's. Apart from the fact that the Apocalypse, arguably the most intriguing part of the bible, is ultimately a revenge story. It all depends on how you structure your story (I still did not play the game so I am not sure in this case).
Imagine creating a “revenge is bad” story with a main character so unlikeable it convinces the audience that revenge is really good.

A lot of the roles that Bruce Straley and Neil Druckman had overlapped they said it themselves in a 2013 Empire Review and further emphasized it in their 2014 reddit ama. Plus there are a lot more players that come to mind when it comes to the story and characters, for example in the directors commentary Neil himself believed Joel to be a character that didn't care at all about Tess. Troy Baker took a different approach and made Joel care about Tess, but not really show it and thats what stuck. Another thing Neil Druckman planned for the first game was to have Tess go hunting Joel cross country because Joel betrayed her in some way. This idea was scrapped by the current Naught Dog president Evan Wells and a plethora of other people on the time.
The point I'm getting at is Neil was not the sole writer of the first game, saying he was is the fan fiction.

Sad ending with bleak story can still be great but only when the build up is done right. It's actually hard to write a story that TLOU2 is trying to be. Because if you just want the shock value and sad feels without trying to make the audience invested organically into the build up first, the audience won't feel genuine emotion from it. They had the ingredients, but they mess up the executions.
It was good that he mentions that too. There's a a certain number of people that think that every piece of media and entertainment must be objectively fun and make you feel good.

Sony knows full well naughty dog did a shit story so they purposely make it leak with reviewers having a limited access to the content they can publish from the game. So that they skip the shittiest parts of the story but let it known so people don't crash hell down the moment the game was released. Loved the gameplay of part 2. Fucking HATED the story. For about the last 10 hours or so I was just miserable playing it, fucking hated playing as Abby, and honestly at one point Ellie was starting to become unenjoyable as well. I loved the gameplay but holy shit the story got to the point where I just wanted to turn it off, because I honestly feel with how Druckmann treated these characters and story that everybody loved so much, he didn’t earn my time with this game. He sacrificed character and emotion in genuinely good and down to earth story telling, for pretentious attempts at teaching some sort of half baked and unearned lessons to the player for just wanting to play the game and see these characters treated well. It was just depressing. By the time the Santa Barbara section hit, I was so irritated and just annoyed with this terrible fucking story that I just speed ran it. By the last 10 hours of the game, I just didn’t care anymore. With the first game, I cared about these characters the whole way through, and I cared for the relationship and retribution that they felt between each other. How could they just decide to throw that away, throw everything away, and just genuinely carelessly handle them. I played part 2 with a couple of friends and we genuinely had to pass the controller to even be able to enjoy it. It was a fun game when I was playing it with them, because we couldn’t take it seriously, I think because we all refused to since we all loved the first game and started to hate part 2. But when the credits rolled, all three of us just sat in silence for a couple of minutes, saddened, distraught, confused, frustrated, and disappointed. Then we all shared our thoughts, and for every positive we had, there were about 3 or 4 negatives.
I feel like Abby's story was the most contrived, and frankly, I couldn't care for anybody there.

I loved the "open world" section the most too, and wonder if that was something they considered then abandoned for design, but because so much had been done on that level they put it in the game. Hence, why it's the only "open world" section that feels so different from the rest of the game and why it happens so early then *never* again.

Gameplay was fun, graphics were great, but the story was just so so so so bad on so many levels. If you could skip all the cut scenes then the game may be ok, but you can't. It felt like a teenage girl wrote this. The human nature realism so accurately portrayed in the first one is totally missing in this one

All the people who like TLOU2 love to go on and on about how realistic it is and how "real" the characters are. They may even argue that the story was well written, structured and grounded. And yet, when we actually use realism on the story and try to analyse it, several things happen:
1. The Cordyceps fungus, as it functions like a plant, would be gone by Winter.
2. Any infected that are without proper heating will have their body parts come off due to the intense cold and frostbite.
3. We don't use vaccines to take care of fungi, that's what antibiotics or topical solutions are for.
4. Any self-respecting parent wouldn't let their child get angry at them for saving their life from a bunch of thugs who know nothing about medicine.
5. Any self-respecting parent would take disciplinary action if their child was acting as much of a little bitch as Ellie was and would make sure to set the record straight.
6. The idea that Joel or Tommy would "get soft" after living in Jackson for 5+ years is ridiculous. They're living in a time where, at any moment, they can be set upon by monsters of the human and inhuman variety, so their survival instincts would only get more keen. If you were able to build a community in these arduous times, you'd be more battle-hardened and focused on making sure your community and everyone who lives in it are safe 100% of the time.
7. The idea that Joel or Tommy would be willing to help a random person fight off a zombie horde is ridiculous. Let's not forget that at the beginning of TLOU, Joel demands Tommy not stop on the road to help another family.
8. Everything Abby does throughout the game makes her unlikable and extremely easy to hate. She brutally tortures a man while his brother lay unconscious nearby and his daughter is forced to watch; she has no qualms about murdering children; she doesn't give a shit that a pregnant woman somehow strong-armed her way onto the frontlines of combat; she takes advantage of and sleeps with an emotionally vulnerable and inebriated man; she murders a father-to-be and takes glee in the thought of murdering a pregnant woman; and she has no sense of loyalty, as she mows down her friends of most likely years for a kid she met literal hours ago. But hey, she loves dogs, is a white woman, and respects the pronouns of Discount Mulan, so that means she's a-okay.
9. If this game actually gave a shit about choice, Abby and her group of friends would have died at the hands of Joel, Tommy or Ellie from the moment they met Joel.
10. Abby, as someone who has murdered a lot of Seraphites, has literally no reason to trust Yara or Lev. She wouldn't give a shit about the internal politics of an enemy faction she's been killing in droves.
11. Pregnant women would be the most protected people in this age, and the idea that Mel is somehow able to go behind Owen's back and go on the frontlines is ridiculous. If this were "realistic," Owen would have fought with Mel and Isaac to make sure Mel doesn't step foot outside of the WLF base.
12. Ellie not thinking for even a second about having children to spread her immunity is ridiculous. The damn brat is so hung up on wanting to die for the most ridiculous reasons that she didn't consider for one second to breed. And the idea of Joel not asking anyone in Jackson about this, or telling Ellie that her being alive would mean more to him and everyone in Jackson is an insult to the audience's intelligence.
13. Finally, in a world of limited resources and food, it makes no sense from a realistic standpoint that Abby is as big as she is. As a woman, it is significantly more difficult for her to gain and maintain muscle mass than it would be for a man. It would take her more than a couple years to get that big.
And that's not even the end of it, we could write a book about how the creation of vaccine would have barely any effect on the world and in fact could cause even more deaths...
Every time I see someone say this game's story is well-written, I have to wonder if they're insulting my intelligence. And then I think that these are the exact kind of people Neil Druckman was trying to appeal to: the people who are literally too stupid to think about these kinds of things and lack the critical thinking to realize that there is almost nothing redeemable about this game (outside of the graphics, animations and voice acting, gameplay isn't great, it's decent at best). That's my two cents.

To anyone wondering how true the leaks were?? Well, just look below...
Confirmed by multiple people who have broken their NDAS: Joel dies 2 hours in, by suddenly going from badass survivor to emo moron (VERY new Star Wars treatment of Luke) just to set up the opportunity for Abby to Joel in One him with a golf club.
Abby eventually beats Ellie and her girlfriend almost to death (after you're forced to play Joel's killer for a good 1/4th to 1/3rd of the damn game) but leaves them alive to suffer. Months later Ellie tracks her down (because Druckman wants to beat you over the head worse than Joel was with 'hur-dur revenge be bad'!) And they fight, Ellie wins but Abby bites a few of her fingers off.
Ellie is stopped from killing her by a vision of Joel playing guitar so she spares Abby. Then goes home and tries to play the guitar but can't because her fingers are gone. THAT is the story they're giving 10/10 for and the one that was apparently worth ruining Joel and Ellie for all of us who actually liked them in the 1st one.
If this pisses you off, make sure to spread the word and maybe a few more people will be spared wasting money on this garbage.

The museum flashback mission was the best part for me. It reminded me what made TLOU 1 so amazing which was the relationship/banter between Ellie and Joel and to take that away from the get go in this game was so dumb.
Except...Joel had already been sadistically tortured and killed, so they didn't even let you enjoy the flashback. They gave you a taste of what you and everyone else wanted, but they had to poison that, too.

@@miller-joel Joels death could have been a part of the story. Maybe not in the first ~10 minutes tho. Give the whole Abby introduction with her dad before you kill him. The revenge story in itself is not bad, it could have been part of the game.
The biggest problem the game has and why you either hate it or "love" it is the Abby part. It is loaded with so many tropes to make it hard to publicly state you hate Abby. It makes this game feel like an abusive relationship where everything is perfect, you just "fell down the stairs". This clearly shows in the 10/10 reviews out there.

Love you SkillUp, easily my favorite reviewer online, but this one review I’m glad I didn’t heed. Gameplay is significantly deeper than the original, especially on higher difficulties. The advancements are subtle, but brought together, they amalgamate to create an incredibly robust combat suite that is mostly unparalleled in this genre.
The story? Yeah, 100% depressing, and full of morose decisions. This is not a happy go lucky, feel good story in the vein of the buddy-cop esque adventure of the first. The sequel here is one more suited to a book, or series, and I think the fact that we are forced to play it makes it that much more visceral, and upsetting, but it also turns me the experience into one of the most unique, and emotionally taut gaming experiences one can have, for better, or for worse. I really believe the vision committed to here should be commended, whether or not it resonates with the individual. It was a huge risk, and for me, it paid off.
This is one of the most compelling sequels I’ve ever played, and while there are some contrivances in the story I could have stood to see executed better, the overall themes explored here are powerful, and poignant in a way the world of TLOU deserves. For me, this is a masterpiece, and I truly believe it will be more appreciated as the dark second chapter it needed to be when the inevitable trilogy capper releases.
They were more worried about teaching us a moral lesson than they were about improving the game.

Still, the sequel should never have been based on that choice. The sequel should have simply been a continuation of Joel and Ellie navigating this world. There are hundreds of stories they could have created in this world. A revenge story based on a character death from the first game is as LAZY as it gets. Especially when that revenge is being carried out by a character no when gives a shit about in the first place.
@@Entreped I mean...nah. It was selfish to push the fate of humanity to the wayside to save a kid you just met. He put the future of the world in trouble. Yeah, he became attached to her, but you have to really consider the weight of his decision. It was selfish and it would be expected to be addressed in the second game, but not in the form of a generic revenge story that happens to be about Brock Lesnar with a wig and homophobia. The idea that Joel has to deal with consequences is good, but the way the game handles it is sloppy and try hard.

I never came away from the first game thinking that Joel's decision was selfish. In fact, I agreed with his decision wholeheartedly. There was no guarantee that the operation and research would have ended in a successful treatment, much less a cure. In all likelihood, Ellie would have died and the operation would have still failed like it had many times prior to their arrival. That is what I took away from the game in the end (as have many other people).

No they aren’t. User reviews get bombed because they put a girl in the game. Or a gay person. Or they later released a game exclusively on epic. Or any of a number of outrage culture gamer freak outs because the devs didn’t do exactly what they wanted. Gamers are snowflakes, they can’t handle it when devs have different ideas about equality, and have months long review bomb hissy fits about it. And I’m SURE the last of us 2 has had that happen, I read the outrage over the leaks.
Also, the Witcher 3 was overrated. Same roll around on the ground combat as every 3rd person action rpg since soulsborne became a genre, the rpg elements are pathetic (what’s a skill tree?), and it was buggy at launch. All it’s got going for it are beautiful visuals and a decent plot. Oh, and tits, so of course it’s 10/10 for some people.

@@IAmAnEvilTaco The reason why Witcher trilogy suceeded wasn't mainly because of its combat, its because of its story and how the main plot line can be affected by how you pace, pick decisions or choose sidequest(picking certain sidequests can lead to a bad ending) that gives a certain result.
This isnt about race or gender, its about story quality that feels real and sadly naughty dog didn't offer us that.
But IGN said it was a "masterpiece". Ign wouldn't lie for money right?

Thankfully, this character doesn't look or act like Ellie at all, so it's really easy to ignore! They can change the titles all they like, but there's only one TLOU game.

The original game was the best, but I think for me the last of us 2 was the first game i played that didn't care about the characters and just ruined all of their lives during the course of the game. It was just heart breaking all the way through, and when you thought it wouldn't get worse, it did. I have just never played such a big game where they didn't care about the characters at all and took 100% freedom on the end of a story.
After nearly a full year later:

I have an issue with it being a basic revenge plot with some characters making dumb decisions that go against self-preservation and common sense all for the sake of adding drama and shock value. But I guess it's fine if you leave your brain at the door like you would for a cheap horror flick.

The fact that so many restrictions were applied to reviewers only reveals Sony and Naughty Dog's insecurity about people not falling in the trap of playing this beautiful looking trainwreck of absurdity and only be taken by surprise so they can't roll back on their purchase.

See, I enjoyed the gameplay in the first game, even if it did get a bit repetitive. The melee combat was easily some of the most brutal and satisfying combat I've ever played, super visceral and fun in an ultraviolent sort of way. So I can enjoy most of this game based on the combat. Also in terms of visuals, level design, accessibility options, and voice-acting (these are some of the best voice performances I've ever seen in a video game; almost every actor does a terrific job). But I cant get behind what they did with the characters. I dont mind the revenge story, but they ABSOLUTELY destroy the characters you loved from the first game. Oh, and the pacing in this game is absolutely atrocious.
I really enjoyed the gameplay. I was very unsatisfied with the story.
TLOU2 gameplay is top tier. The gunplay and overall combat rivals the best Third Person Shooters such as Max payne 3. From a gameplay aspect, it is severely underrated.
Too bad the story is an absolute mess.
If TLOU was never created, people would enjoy TLOU2 story a lot more imo. It is still light-years ahead of most AAA games when it comes to direction, voice acting, and writing. People just didn't like what ND did with characters from the first game

@@IngvarMar those were very tiny sparks on a very dark tale. on the first one you had ellie's attitude, joel & ellie talking, joel's friend, the brothers, the giraffe encounter. even the part with Abby before everything happened, is happy but is not about making the player happy is just to add darkness to the events.
