    Thanks for the video it really helped, luckily I read thru the comments and realized we needed an obd programmer to get camera to come on. Other than that I had a plug with power we tied into. But may tie into backup light power so camera isn't on full time.

    I am a newbie to Jeep modifications in general and your great video (I plan to add a backup camera to a Jeep JK Unlimited as soon as I purchase one) raised a few questions. I hope you don't mind answering my questions.
    1. What else can I use the OBDII for?
    2. How do I purchase the ability to turn on the backup camera? You mention the VIN.
    3. Does the backup camera you purchased display in color?
    4. Does the backup camera you purchased have what I call "guide lines." I own a 2019 Cherokee which has the OEM camera and I am spoiled when backing up.
    5. I'm planning a Spare Tire Delete and am looking to move the license plate to center of the 5th door, and mount the camera there, as well as have an integrated 3rd brake light to replace the OEM CHMSL. Any suggestions as to where to look, what's good, what's junk, et cetera?

    • @VictorVectorJKU
      @VictorVectorJKU  2 роки тому +3

      Hey there Mark, Thanks for checking out my video! Let me see what I can do to answer these!
      1. So the OBDII Bluetooth reader along with the J-Scan App can do a lot! I suggest you look at jscan.net/ to get more info on all it offers!
      2. So you do not purchase the ability to turn on the camera but rather purchase a single vin license through the J-Scan App to program and adjust systems on that one registered vehicle. refer to the link for more info in my answer to item 1.
      3. The camera and display paired together do show color, but at night it uses infrared I believe so it will be more of a gray scale.
      4. it does have guidelines, but I do not believe that they are adjustable, nor do they move as you turn the wheel. They are very basic.
      5. Honestly if you are looking for a recommendation for a certain manufacturer, I do not really have one. I think all of them out there are comparable, and it really comes down to what you like and are looking for in features. Some are basic, some have molle panels or modular mounting features so you really just need to go with what will fit your build the best!
      I hope my answers are able to give you some direction! let me know if you have other questions!

    You route that on constant power. That means the backup camera is powered all the time. Not sure whether the 12V plug in the dash is keyed to the ignition, that at least would turn it off when the car isn't running. I'm probably going to hook the camera into the reverse lights, simply because having the camera on all the time isn't a good thing for that camera chip, particularly when it's hot out (I drive a lot in the desert, so having way over 120 degrees back there when exposed to direct sun wouldn't surprise me at all). Those kind of cameras usually use less than 150mA so the reverse light circuit should be able to handle that easily.
    Thanks for testing which one of the adapters it is - that saves time!

    • @VictorVectorJKU
      @VictorVectorJKU  3 роки тому

      Thanks for checking out my video Uwe! That is correct it is constant powered and to answer you question it is keyed so it is only powered with the key in the ACC or On position. You make a fair argument about the total run time of the camera and heat, I had not thought about that! My main thought was I like to limit splicing into existing harnesses due to CAN signals being present. So with the jumper I picked up I was at least not impacting the factory harness. But I don’t see an issue with running off of the reverse lights, I would be curious if there is any lag for the image to come up beyond the display switching functions.

I tried constant power and the backup light and both work exactly the same. You can tie into the backup light using the black and white/brown wire going into the grommet above the right rear light.

    Thanks for posting this video! Really helped on the pin connectors and which to use, my Wife’s JK is an automatic so not sure if that’s different from the manual you have also pretty sure she has the RHB radio with Nav which sounds like it should work, just need to see if I can find an option on the radios setup to turn on a camera or if I have to go the route you did with the blue tooth scan tool or take to the dealer. I have a feeling the dealer route won’t be favorable as I told her last time it got serviced to have them turn the option on and they said they need to know what type of camera it is, which I kind of doubt that matters but maybe. I got every thing wired in today using the number 2/3 pins, just need to get the computer to turn on the back up camera option and hopefully it works, wired it into the right rear tail light harness since we installed the trailer light pigtail off the left light and had the back end appart for both, had to long to the bracket upside down compared to yours and bend it as hers is a rubicon Recon edition and the bolt pattern to wheels spokes must be opposite of most jeep rims as all the spokes interfere with the camera location relative to stud clocking on the spare tire mount on the back door, not a big deal but took some finagling. Anyways thanks again for the video, may hit you back once we get the obd part turned on

    • @VictorVectorJKU
      @VictorVectorJKU  2 роки тому

      Hey thanks for checking out my video and that is great to hear it was able to help you out! I am unsure the ability to edit settings with the Nav model versus using an OBD programming tool but I do not see why the dealer must know the make of the camera, it is purely a setting that must be enabled to allow the camera feed. (It should be a binary parameter in the ECU “enabled” or “disabled”)
      But good job on figuring out how to make it work with the wheel openings for the spare! Hopefully you can get this last bit complete and have the backup camera functioning!!

      @VictorVectorJKU  3 роки тому +1

      Hey there Upsman1313. So just to verify, you have purchased the license for your VIN on your Jeep in the JScan App, correct?
      Once you plug in the OBD reader and open the JScan app you will want to select your vehicle and pair to it. Then you will go to the adaptation menu > radio and camera - settings > rear camera on/off > select active from the drop down.
      As far as the lone red wire on the video cable, I believe it is included as a grounding wire. I did not do anything with it for my install. I think I just taped it to the video cable.

      2. Does the camera have an appropriate power lead hooked up?
      3. Have you enabled the camera through the Jeep’s OBD port or had a car dealer enable it?

      Yes, the camera function is controlled by the ECU’s of the vehicle which require programming to enable. When you shift your vehicle into reverse if your screen does not turn black or show the camera image if you have installed it then you must enable this function.

    Why did you not have power in the back? I thought I saw all the same wires? I thought we were supposed to splice it in on the reverse tail light wire? Or does it need to be a constant power? Like the one for the dome lights?

    • @VictorVectorJKU
      @VictorVectorJKU  3 роки тому +1

      Hey there Cory, thanks for checking out the video! And my only guess is this is a standard harness from the factory and where it is plugged into the main harness is not supported based on the trim level of the vehicle. Only specific options come with the 12v power off the right rear corner and mine was not wired to support that even tho the connector was there. I think you need constant power otherwise if your lights are off and you shift into reverse you will have a black screen. This is why I ran my power up to a constant power accessory.

      Ok so just to confirm you have the unit with navigation? From my understanding, you should be able to connect a back up camera like I did. You will of course need to or have the ECU programmed to enable the reverse camera. But this is a different unit than I have so I am not 100% positive.

      So installed everything and once I put my jeep in reverse i get nothing on the screen. The jeep came with the Bluetooth activated already but not sure if they also activated the back up camera might this be my problem that I need to activate it or should the radio screen change a certain color to all black even doe it hasn’t been unlocked for the back up camera or is there another problem Thanks🙏🏽

    • @VictorVectorJKU
      @VictorVectorJKU  Рік тому +1

      So Bluetooth is not the functionality you need. You need to purchase an OBD Bluetooth reader and I recommend using the J-Scan app from your phone’s App Store. You will need to purchase a license for the VIN of your vehicle in the app. Then you need to enable the backup camera function at which time the screen will change and show the backup camera.
