  • On today’s episode, we are joined by a two time Premier League winner with over 50 caps for England.
Paul Ince’s 20 year career took him from his local club West Ham, to Italy, Old Trafford and Anfield as he became one of the few players to represent both side’s in the Premier League’s fiercest rivalry…
Paul went on to become a manager, learning his trade at Macclesfield Town and MK Dons before a short stint in the Premier League with Blackburn Rovers. In 2022 he joined Reading FC but after a tumultuous spell that featured point deductions, an absent owner and a transfer embargo he left the club last year.
’The Guv’nor’ joins the show to discuss his challenging upbringing, his bust ups with Sir Alex Ferguson and his difficult time at Reading, whilst also giving his thoughts on the future prospects of his former clubs.

A great podcast. Ince is often forgotten when people talk about great midfielders. Keane, Scholes, Robson ....all get regular mentions...but Paul was up there with them. Always thought he was a bit arrogant, but this shows him as a very decent guy and a family man. Total respect.

For this man to come from where he came from and end up playing more than 50 times for England (should definitely have got more) and becoming a stalwart for the biggest club in England is truly a rags to riches story ; what an absolute legend. Mind blowing that he's not written an autobiography because if anyones would be compelling , it would be his.

God bless you, Incey. Despite the racial abuse, you refuse to see colour - that makes me proud to be a fellow Londoner. From the hard, hard start in life you had, where you got to is incredible. I could see the emotion in your eyes when you spoke about wanting that feeling of 'family' (my eyes moistened as I watched). Well said to the press when then were trying the "first black player to" crap. You got to captain England because of your talent and leadership. I will never, ever forget you leading us to the World Cup finals with your head bloodied and bandaged that night in Rome. You love our country despite the evil idiots who racially abused you. That makes you a so much bigger man than they (or I can) can ever dream of being. That's why you are the governor.

Ince's comparison of Liverpool and united is floored. When he joined the former, they had just ended a period of unrivalled dominance, winning leagues and European cups, it was the end of that cycle. When he was at united, on the other hand, it was the beginning of their dominance so you can't compare the two. That said, United's dominance coincided with globalisation so over the fergie years, they arguably reach a larger consumer base, earned more income and thus surpassed Liverpool's popularity

Paul Ince what a man... loved him as a player because of how he played - great player but hard as nails, would've loved him at Wimbledon. Hope he gets back into the game, again would've loved him at Wimbledon but with all the MK crap I don't think we would've considered him & we're probably too small, but what a great bloke!! Good luck Paul

Really good interview this, I meet Paul at selhurst park in about 1990, I got his autograph as a kid about 12 I was, he grabbed the book didn't look at me or the book and scribbled a vague autograph on it, as a kid I was left abit disappointed by the way he was that night, but after watching this interview he's a desent man, thought he was doing a good job at Reading under difficult circumstances. Notsure why any club in the championship or below or even Scottish Premier wouldn't take a punt on him to be honest......
