It's hard for me to say. People have to remember he took this job after Mancini abruptly left. He's never coached a national team before and he hasn't had a lot of time with them. I don't know what he was doing during training sessions, I know by mouth he wanted to press to high and have ball possession. We know he can do it, did it with Napoli. The problem is, he doesn't get to have these players around much to implement what he did at Napoli. Player selection wise. Cristante, Jorginho, Di Lorenzo, Mancini have got to go. I'm not throwing Retegui and Scamacca in there cause when you're not getting any service whatsoever, you're not gonna get a chance to score as your teammates can't string passes together and turn the ball over constantly. Spalletti did say he will lower the age of the group. That's a good thing. Fagioli has the ability to take players 1v1 something Jorginho can't do and I believe as he gets his confidence back after being out, Fagioli can be a valuable piece in that midfield. From what I remember 2 of the younger national teams won their Euros. One of them being U17 beat Portugal 3-0. And another youth national team got to the Euro finals. Let's see what Spalletti can do. The wrong answer is to get rid of him because what then if the next manager has the same result as Spalletti? Do you throw him out fast too?
Lack of player quality is not an excuse. We won the 2021 tournament with a squad of similar level, even slightly inferior (certainly so after Spinazzola's injury). Moreover Italy's players may not be superstars but they are still very good and there are individuals who are to be considered top players, namely Chiesa and Donnarumma; also watch out for Calafiori in the future because we may have a colossus in the making there. Yes, injuries and unavailabilities screwed us over big time, as Tonali and Udogie in particular could have been a saving grace, but the lack of mentality and organization were the real problem and also what made all the difference 3 years ago. This failure is largely on the manager
lack of players is not an excuse. there were 6 players from euro 2021. and overall the global level is at least the same if not better. spalletti is the problem at 80%. he tried to adapt the players to his style of play which is impossible in a national team because there is no time for that. he had to input simple concepts and replicate some of the ones they know from their club. tonali could have helped in midfield. also youngsters need to be added way sooner. look at the camarda etc. they are very good. spain and others are showing the way
Small correction, it wasn't one of the worst Italy performances, it was THE worst Italy performance ever. Never saw such as scared, unorganised, lost Italian football team. Sad sad state.
They finished bottom in a group of Paraguay, Slovakia & New Zealand…2010 was easily the worst. Closely followed by 2014. And that 2017-2019 stretch was the worst EVER!
@@BilliBBoBstraightness He is talking about performances, not ranks or results. Performances refer to what happened on the pitch and is relative to the strength of the opposition too. In 2010 the team tried really hard but could not break down New Zealand. It also had serious injuries to key players Buffon and Pirlo. Spalletti's team did not even try.

Italy have won 2 Euros, not 3. Also, for most of Italy’s football history the majority of the national team players ply their trade in the Italian league. In 2006 every player played in the Serie A. They won the world cup. I don’t think it’s necessary for Italians to go abroad in order to “level up”. On the contrary, it’s Italian coaches and club presidents who need to have the balls (pun intended) to let young Italians play in the Serie A and stop waiting for them to be approaching 30 before they are considered mature enough. One more thing, on the topic of coaches. This is something that many ex-managers and players have already stated, and that is that today all across the world but especially evident in Italy, so many youth coaches want to follow the Guardiola model. They want to develop “complex” styles of play which the players must adhere to and leave THEIR mark in order to advance THEIR career, rather than teaching the fundamental skills to the youth and letting them develop and express their creative skills.
I mean....back then Serie A was the best league in the world, so the level of competition in Serie A alone was plenty...like, even just talking about Balon D'Or winners...in the 2005/2006 season alone, to my memory, off the top of my head, there were 5 Balon D'or winners playing in the league at the same time, by comparison the Premier lewgue right now seems like a playground, and i am not even going to to talk about all of the insane level of players that never won that but that won plenty of UCL titles, or League titles, Euro titles, WC titles, like Ibrahimovic, Buffon, Pirlo, Maldini, Del Piero, Trezeguet etc etc, plus the fact that even smaller teams played regularly in UCL and Uefa/Europa league cups.

It demonstrates what a country can produce vs what clubs can buy. You reserve 3 for the very best foreigners. When more Italians are playing in a top flight, they will develop more players. Absolutely. The first thing I said when Spalletti was appointed Italy's manager was "he isn't suitable" and I stand by it. He's a good coach, but not for a national squad. Di Lorenzo was not only terrible in this tournament but also in the previous one. All of the major problem for Italy, aside from stupid one-time mistakes, came from his side in 2021 as well as 2024; it's mind boggling how he can still be an option for the team selection.

The biggest issue Calafiori should have been starting at 18 at one of the Serie A clubs instead of being sent to Switzerland. Now he will go to England where defense goes to die. The youth level is loaded with world class talent, but it lies on the big clubs to keep Italian kids on their roster and if they loan them loan them to a serie A team that will finish middle bottom of table. Spaletti was brutal with his selections and lineups. After the albania game he should have thought more pragmatic but instead they were 11 individuals running around a pitch with no cohesive approach. DiLorenzo being kept out there was the worst coaching, in 94 I watched Sacchi sub off Robby Baggio. If il contino divino can be subbed i think Di Lorenzo could have been subbed lol. No excuses from him now he has time and a big pool of talent to figure out 2026!
It's entirely Bologna's fault he's being sold to England, not anybody else's. But yes, players moving to England is not going to make things any better for the Azzurri. Jorginho being a prime example.
This Italian team seemed to lack two things: 1. cooperation and 2. heart. The players individually seem good enough on their own, with a few exceptions. The latter item was very evident in their match against Switzerland. They looked absolutely disinterested.

In my opinion, Italy's downfall was a mixture of bad coaching and selection, with a touch of bad luck. Mancini's Italy of 2021 was a well-crafted machine, with a good balance of offense and defense, slightly better in the second. Mancini, trying to bring the best features of his players up, went for a 4-3-3: Donnarumma as a goalie, Bonucci and Chiellini as centre backs, Di Lorenzo on the right and Spinazzola on the left, Jorginho as playmaker, followes by Barella and Locatelli/Pessina in the middle, with Berardi or Chiesa as rifht wing, Immobile as the main striker and Insigne on the left. Every single player of this team played in the same position for both the national team and their clubs: they perfectly knew what they need to do and how to do it. Spalletti had to face many problem from the beginning. Most of the previous team players were too old (Bonucci), retired (Chiellini), out of shape (Insigne and Immobile) or injured (Berardi). Also, Tonali's absence was a very heavy blow, since he would have been clearly a starter and would have added a lot of balance in the transition phase between attack and defense. Unlike Mancini, who doesn't have a standard line-up, Spalletti always uses a 4-2-3-1 and that was a problem: most of Italy top defenders (Bastoni, Dimarco, Mancini, Buongiorno, Gatti just to name a few) right now play with a back 3 sistem with their clubs and are not familiar with the tactics of a back 4 formation. Forcing them into his module was a mistake. Also, Italy's best wingers were kinda avarage (I mean, they're not bad by any means, it just happens we had better ones last time), yet he insisted on having them, which leads us to the last problem: both Retegui and Scamacca used to have a partner striker in their clubs (Gudmunson and Lookman, both very skilled in dribbling) and team up in order to score. With a couple of wingers, they were completely uneffective. Spalletti, imo, should have adopted a 3-5-2 solution: defenders would have fit better, both strikers would have a partner and the wingers could be swapped forna couple of offensive fullbacks, like Dimarco, Spinazzola or Bellanova. Lastly, we should also consider that Mancini's strongest point was the midfield: most of Italy's goal in the Euro 2021 came directly from a midfielder or were assisted by one, with wingers having a pivotal role in bringing the team forward. Immobile was more a decoy than an effective striker. Spalletti's Italy lacked immensely in build-up and struggled to reach the strikers (0 goals by Scamacca and Retegui in 4 matches). Jorginho was not the same playmaker and, frankly, I cannot understand why he was called. Pellegrini and Fagioli were awful. Barella did kinda well though, still not enough. In general, they lacked creativity. Players like Bonaventura, Orsolini, Colpani or Pessina, very goal-oriented, would have solved the problem, but they were left out. It must be said that Italian footballers right now are not top notch, with a couple of exceptions. Still, I personally think that, with just a couple of corrections, our selection could have done better. Maybe not winning back to back the tournament, but at least putting up a decent fight for the semis. Feels like they didn't even wanna try. And that is very sad.
You have the best analysis I’ve seen anywhere yet. I agree with 90% or more. Euro 2020 was great and Mancini’s offensive minded 3-2-5 was insane to watch. But that team was never going to play together again as Chiellini and Bonucci were older. Spalletti could have done 3-5-2 which as you stated would make sense for most players who play that at club level already. I’m bummed, I hope we qualify for the next WC. We have the players. we need the execution. And in a bigger picture overall, clubs need to play Italian youth. No more sending all this talent out on loan to Serie B and youth teams. Total BS
The honest gist of it is that in Italian clubs they prefer foreigners that are experienced at the club level than betting on their youth. ALSO it's cheaper for them to bring youth players from other countries and building them up to then sell them than to develop actual talent. It is OUTRAGEOUS that italian teams barely have italians in their squads. AND THEY ARE OK WITH IT. Look at Milan, Napoli, Juventus or basically any team like Torino and Atalanta. Not even their "primavera" have Italinas. How do you expect to select Italians for a national team when there are none?. They better start developing and betting on local talent again, or they will be like this for a long time. Sacchi has been very adamant about this for the last decade.
I was just listening to Fàbregas talk with Rio Ferdinand about this very thing. That Spain invests in their own youth. Priming them for a success at the national level.

Great analysis. I’ve been an Italy fan all my life and it was sorely disappointing to watch this Euro. I noticed the problems right at the outset when they played Albania. Even though they won, it was not a convincing win and knew that when they would go against Spain, it would not be the same. I can’t help but think that Italian soccer is entering a dark age. Seeing the trends with upcoming talent, the declining status of Seria A as a league, and attitudes of players themselves I think it will be a long while before Italian soccer turns it around. I hope I’m wrong, but I’m not optimistic for the near future. I’m even doubtful they will make the next World Cup! 😢
As an Italian, I can confirm. But we also have to talk about the low quality of Italian "scuole calcio" (places where Italian kids and boys play football and develop) which are unable to form adequate footballers and which are also very costly. Managers of youth teams from all around Italy prefer deploying more physical players so they can win youth tournaments, but likewise, they sacrify the development of new footballers.
how do you explain the recent excellent results of younger teams like under 20, 19 and 17 then? U19 has deservedly just won the Euro cup, showing enormous talent and a higher level than any other opponent

That's not the problem imo Italy is full of great young talents, but they hardly find place in big clubs when they are still very young, not making much important experience in their first years as pros. Not because they are not good enough, but because of the mentality that relies heavily on more experienced players

Scamacca maybe had a good season in atalanta, but he can't play as good for the National team as he plays in Atalanta, and Retegui by number of scored goals is at the same level as lucca and worse than Pinamonti, but he is very unpredictable. Beside a lack of international-level players (we've got some) the real issue was the tactics. Spalletti choose players who played a 352 or 3 center back defense and put them out of role in 433. He was not able to read the characteristics of players, and used them like in fut.
I think Brazil have got a copyright on that sort of stuff. I can see them finishing 6th in COMNEBOL qualifiers and still FIFA will find a way to rank them as top seeds for the draw.

They have a good squad but out dated tactics and easy to read , just look at Spain with no more tiki-taka style and crushing posession , they stay back when it's needed and score on counter atack Spain use to have playmakers on wings and false 9 just to control the game and with the modern aproach they have a more electric style of play with Williams and Yamal and most likely will win the Euro

@@FAMA-18 Yes, that is indeed the style that always worked best for Italy against Spain. But Mancini tried possession, and failed. Spalletti went even harder, and failed even harder. A lot of Italy's issues in recent years have come from the unsuccessful attempts at adopting tiki taka. Conte on the other hand had the most typically Italian tactics in 2016 and he did brilliantly.

This was the worst Italian team I've seen in my lifetime which I began watching regularly in the 1982 World Cup. Even though other Italian teams had some bad failures, most of that failure came from an inability to score even when controlling a game, losses in Penalty Kick shootouts, bad luck, bad groups, etc. I have never seen them be this outclassed. They definitively looked inferior to second tier squads like Switzerland and Croatia. Again, I've seen them lose to countries like this many times but never in a manner in which they looked decidedly inferior the way that they did in this tournament (after the first game). You never got the feeling that they were better than a typical third tier team.
Nah, this team was very talented, just zero chemistry and heart. Antonio Conte had the worst team at Euro 2016 due to Verratti and Marchisio being injured. And yet, Conte was a couple spot kicks away against Germany to taking an average team to the semis.
If there's one thing that has been similar in ALL italy's competitions run (even the shittiest ones, like 2010 WC or 2014 WC) is the heart and the passion mixed with toughness our italian players has played with. This is the first time in my life, after also rewatching games of oldest WC or EC, I've seen a bunch of guys just givin up. The majority of the issues come from Spalletti's bad recruiting and lack of putting players in their natural positions; but the cause fo this disaster is also associated to players clearly not wanting the win neither battling for their nation - not all of them, but some people like Scamacca casually walking around the field and couple of days later via IG story on Ibiza doing party and laughing like nothing happened. Serie A managers NEED to develop italian players within their clubs and not relying on foreign players, and players NEED to calm down their ego and start thinking that their 5-6-7 mln € salary is neither granted nor free from duties. Meanwhile, Spalletti has to think about what the actual fucking scheme he wanna run, because he's been horrible to see on the sideline with that attitude and then hearing him on press conference saying a lot of fancy words to hide his total failure in all of aspect of coaching - recruiting, positioning, managing ecc ecc.

Also, in 2006 and 2021 Italy had a group of players being a solid “locker room” and it was perceived through interviews, videos, etc. Spalletti banned PlayStation, smartphones, jokes so the players were united and confident (most of them spoke like 3/4 times before this tournament). Since there was no experience he should have let them being friends. Spalletti is very good at clubs but not as good as C.T.
Personally I think Spalletti was burned out from coaching Napoli, Montella did pretty well with Turkey maybe FIDGC should have thought outside the box. To me not having Sandro Tonali was a huge loss for this team. Just a matter of time until Allegri takes over.
The main reason we suck so bad is because Spalletti and the FIGC didn't pick players from lower categories , like Serie B, who are more concentrated, with "eyes on the prize", and generally fresher and with more energy at summer because they have a shorter championship (Serie B ends on the first days of May), and instead they rely on these "primadonnas" in Serie A, most of whom are "one foot in the grave", since they are already too old, except for Donnarumma who is one of the best goalkeepers we have (and still can do great things for years to come). Other than that, it's true that our Serie A is one of the longest competitions (we start around mid-August), but even so, if the players are tired after so many competitions (such as Champions League, Europa League, Coppa Italia) that interrupts Serie A and tires them, it's no wonder the teams won't ggive you their best players.
I didn't think that DiLorenzo played very well at all and was almost a liability in defense. What happened to Leonardo Spinazzola? He was incredibly dynamic in the midfield at the 2021 Euros, until he unfortunately ruptured his Achilles tendon. Maybe he just hasn't been the same, which is truly unfortunate for the Azzurri.
I'm an as Roma supporter. Leo recovered in a long time after the injury. Then he helped Roma to reach the Europa League final, but this year he wasn't so decisive, Now he has been transfered to Napoli were Antonio Conte Is the new coach. Maybe a rebirth for Spinazzola.
The Youth squads have been very successful, thus i have hope that there will be players coming up through their system. The fact that the SerieA is just not as competitive as the other european leagues is troubling though, but as a fan i/we can not despair, we need to support our players. If we look at the other countries ultras and fan following, we have a lot of work to do, which honestly is the only thing we can actually contribute.

Listen. Spalletti was told to sabotage the team, simple. You cannot notice that every team would consistently and almost exclusively press Di Lorenzo and that he was the problem on the Spain and Croatia goal, and then keep him in for Switzerland when their coach said "If they play with 4 in the back, we will attack them hard!" Everyone saw it. At one point, when Di Lorenzo almost broke his own ankle I thought that maybe even God was telling Spalletti to remove him. Not only this, but you punish your hero Zaccagni for saving you against Croatia and put in a Roma bench warmer that hasn't played once? Who does this? Who changes key elements of a team that performed better to one that is unknown? I'll tell you who, a coach that was told to ensure Italy was eliminated. This was for England's benefit.
Spalletti can’t not stay on, and I don’t think he will. Spalletti is a mediocre coach that had a miracle with Napoli before that he hasn’t won nothing ever he is not capable for an international coach and I hope coming November he gets out along with Gravina no reason for these two to stay on.

Don't get triggered, but the downfall has not yet ended. The Azzurri won't make the next 2 World Cup's unless the Italian Football Association cleans up Seria A and young Italian players are given game time in the National Team. Italy has good youth teams but their guidance into senior teams is pathetic to non existant. There are NO strikers. There are NO midfielders. Fix that & Italy is back.

I think the absence of Verratti isn’t discussed enough. He was Italy’s best player at the last Euro. He controlled almost every game, except against Spain. And in all of those games that tournament, Italy would noticeably lose control of the game when Verratti was substituted off.
I think that it's a series of factors. 1. Italy indeed is lacking of pure talents now. Surely they have an issue on their child schools. 2. Mancini leave the Team midways the Euro route, that didn't helped. 3. More time is passing by and more i'm convinced that the team didn't liked the new coach attitude. See the face of the Italian players when they was eliminated, they have an expression more like a pain liberation than pain for the elimination. I think that the team want Spalletti to resign and for that they played s""it. 4. The Italian U18 and U20 are winning and playing finals all over around, but that young players don't play in Serie A or B but rather Serie D...so we can fairly say that Clubs don't give any thrust to youngs, except maybe Atalanta that is the exception.
I am a supporter of Greece, but Italy is my 2nd favorite team, as I grew up watching the great Italian players of the 80s and 90s. Baggio, Donadoni, Cabrini, Maldini, Cannavaro, Delpiero, Baresi, Conti, Vialli, etc .. This was the worst, least talented Italian team I have ever seen.

"The players are not good enough" is a non-starter of an argument. Austria, Switzerland, Turkey, Georgia or Romania haven't got better players than Italy yet they at least tried to play in a coherent manner. When your players are not that good technically you lead them with instructions that are simple to execute. Prandelli, Conte and Mancini also worked with a squad that had much less talent than those of the 1980s-1990s-2000s but they made it work. Conte's Italy beat Spain with De Sciglio at LWB and Giaccherini and Parolo in midfield! Spalletti instead wanted to show that his ideologies and dogmas were the right way. Ah, and to make matters worse: he said even before the tournament that he was relying on Inter's players more than the rest AND he delivered on that promise. Frattesi and Darmian kept starting matches even though they were dismal; Darmian had been kicked off the team for many years because of bad performances, Spalletti brought him back. He sidelined all of Juve's players and insisted on relying on players from his past teams (Roma, Inter, Napoli). Even Allegri would have done a better job with this squad.
Talented players? Nope. Donnarumma is the only player with genuine talent in this arse of a squad. Di Lorenzo was criminally bad. Fagioli should never have been picked. Spalletti made enormous errors of judgement. Managing the team with utter arrogance. Time for several players to lose the jersey and for an injection of youth.

Italy tecnical skill has been going lower and lower year by year, the 2021 team that won the Euro wasnt that good but definitely better than now, if you lack skill it means you have to play at 110% and give all your heart, these guys didnt do that either and this is the result...

The funny thing is that this Italy team was also the only team in the tournament that didn't concede a single goal from Spain. All the other teams that faced Spain conceded at least 2 goals from the Spaniards (except for Albania, which conceded only 1 goal, but by then Spain was already qualified and it would have been pointless to risk injuries)

He was just walking almost the entire game not running and when he did get the ball he did fuck all with it. The team underperformed as a whole, but what’s more important than gow good the players played is their attitude while playing. You could see what it meant to Donnaruma, Califiori, and Raspadori to represent the national team and wear the blue jersey. I felt like Scamacca gave the appearance that he could give a fuck less, that it’s a right for him to be playing not a privilege and hate that attitude, it’s toxic.

Great video. This is everything I’ve been saying. No way we were ever gonna win, but going out at the round of 16 and the way we did is inexcusable. A lot of the blame lies with Spalletti, but as you highlighted there was a whole host of other issues, some deep rooted and systemic, some coming down to favoritism/basically nepotism. This was a sad sad showing at the Euros, especially when we could’ve taken advantage of being on the “weaker” side of the bracket. Last time, we were of the harder side and look how we did. There is just no excuse for the circus act this team displayed. Absolutely pathetic and disgraceful.
Almost every World Cup team typically has players that play club football together in some fashion or at least go in the same. These teams are players that plays sporadically throughout the world in Europe South America whatever is not good for the team.

As an half Italian and my family being from Italy watching this euros was hard for me and my family we knew our team was good (except Scammaca he is the laziest player i have ever seen) but the managing was for sure poor. Terrible tactics not bringing on players that won you games (Zaccagni) changing/testing formations so many times for sure pissed me aswell as many Italians off. I still don't understand why Ancelotti is NOT manager after showing he is one of the best out there. I think our team/Italy's biggest failure as an Italian fan was for sure the manager and 2nd lack of preparation.
2010-2024 has been a disaster. The one good moment came in 2020-2021, but besides that 1 year stretch it’s been embarrassing to watch these guys. No competent striker, weak midfield, scared players, and a lack of development. They lacked talent at many key positions. Very few (if any) world class players where it matters. But that was known going into the tournament. What was more alarming was how the team showed a complete lack of leadership. They had no champions in the lineup and no reaction to anything bad that happened. It was clear from the first minute of the first game. Teams of the past wouldn’t have let something like that happen and would have responded much better.
Spain demoralized Italy. They didn't want to participate anymore after that physiological beatdown. THAT IS WHAT HAPPENED TO ITALY. they are much better than what people think. I am sure of it. They just couldn't recouperate after that loss.
Great video but you failed to mention why the key players Insigne and Verrati were left off Italy. I don't know why he called Cristante again.(He didn't call him in March) I know Locatelli is not the best Dm in the world but he's best than Cristante. The players who didn't should be called again are Mancini,Cristante and Raspadori.
The main factor seems to have been the lack in fitness. I've never seen an Italian squad like this. It seemed like the players were always three steps behind, second to every ball. When you put such a team against young players from Switzerland or Spain who run around like battery rabbits then desaster is programmed. The sheer clearness by which the Swiss defeated Italy without even breaking into sweat was shocking but hardly surprising after you had seen the frist three matches.
For next worldcup, I would play Fagioli, Lucatelli, Tonali, and Zaniolo in the middel field at thesame time. If I play three of them, I will push Zaniolo to forward. And I will put Camarda at #9. Plus Bastoni, Calafiori and Donnarumma. Barella is a liability in keep procession due to his size. Pellegrini is alway fit but he is alway lack of creativity as #10.

But they just did not turn up at this tournament. They turn up at last tournament though and they were very entertaining in last euro tournament.

I think it needs to be understood that there was going to be a step back with this team. Spalletti deserves very little blame if any. This team lost Chiellini, Bonucci, Belotti due to age & no Immobile or Insigne because they weren’t the strikers they once were. The defense & ESPECIALLY their attack were noticeably worse off. That being said, there was the talent to replace them & most performed like 💩. Donnarumma, Calafiori, Di Lorenzo, Bastoni, Barella & obviously Chiesa were the only starters who had a positive impact. Some of the bench guys were more deserving of starting. I’m hopeful Pellegrini can try to improve in the near future at the national level. Cut all other starters; Darmian, DiMarco & Scamacca especially. I will say Spalletti made some questionable selections going with alot of Inter buddies, but his tactics are successful when the squad actually plays like they’re confident. Reports i’ve heard about players being upset over lack of fun & banning of video games, if I told my nonno about that, he’d call every single player soft & say the team is a disgrace. And the effort we saw against Spain, Croatia & Switzerland matches that description 10000%. Keep Spalletti, keep the defense mostly like it was, and build the midfield & attacking front around Chiesa. He’s gotta be the focus of a strong attack (not alone upfront however, either with 1 or 2 attackers in formation) because we all know Euro 2020 wouldn’t have been won without him

There’s also a very apparent lack of good leadership as you say. Unfortunately, Donnarumma is NOT suited to be captain like the fiery, passionate characters of Chiellini and Bonucci. Recently, Italy gave me confidence when they wiped the floor with the French scum last month, but I say that Mancini, Acerbi (if he is called up), or Jorginho would be excellent candidates for the captaincy.
Of all the older world class players that were at the Euros, ….Kroos, Muller, Ronaldo, the host of Switzerland players with experience that still can really ball, guys like Rabiot on France, of all Those players (at their current physical state / age etcetera) I’d take Marco Verrati over all of them for except maybe Kroos, but personally I like the way Verrati distributes and is generally a little wiz in midfield. He must have been injured because, as we seen, country’s that advanced further than Italy, in the tournament brought their very best skill players at vital positions, if anything some Of them are way more “past it” than a player of the caliber of Verrati, anyways I know he’s not very well liked in Italy, but for not good enough reasons. Why did Dimarco (Spaletti’s key to the left side) at least not have Spinazola to back him up in case of injured, which of course occurred? The list of questions I have is endless, and I almost don’t even want to know the answers, go out there, chins up and either move quick to replace the coach (my preference) or get help selecting the best you have to choose from, with no bias towards anyone of any age, even if very young. The very best athletes Italy has will need to be selected.
The way Italy settled into that Final after going down a goal was special. I'm Greek and love to reflect on 2004 all day but I will say I don't think Greece wins that Final if portugal scored first.
The truth is that in italy soccer is no longer played on the streets. Kids go to the Gym to train their bodies and the ones who play soccer are the well-off or recommended kids because not everyone can afford to pay for their kids to play in soccer schools. The result is players who don't know how to dribble and jump over an opponent like Domenghini, Conti or Donadoni did from their school days...then if a cocky coach like Spalletti who the only ones who he did not let play out of position were the goalkeeper and the center forward, is arrives the catastrophe is served!
A lot of stuff went wrong. Poor squad selection, poor tactics by Spalletti, too many switches to the lineup which led to absolutely 0 cohesion, and a lack of development of youth which has resulted in very underwhelming performances from a squad of mostly mediocre players…

It's hard for me to say. People have to remember he took this job after Mancini abruptly left. He's never coached a national team before and he hasn't had a lot of time with them.
I don't know what he was doing during training sessions, I know by mouth he wanted to press to high and have ball possession. We know he can do it, did it with Napoli. The problem is, he doesn't get to have these players around much to implement what he did at Napoli.
Player selection wise. Cristante, Jorginho, Di Lorenzo, Mancini have got to go. I'm not throwing Retegui and Scamacca in there cause when you're not getting any service whatsoever, you're not gonna get a chance to score as your teammates can't string passes together and turn the ball over constantly.
Spalletti did say he will lower the age of the group. That's a good thing. Fagioli has the ability to take players 1v1 something Jorginho can't do and I believe as he gets his confidence back after being out, Fagioli can be a valuable piece in that midfield.
From what I remember 2 of the younger national teams won their Euros. One of them being U17 beat Portugal 3-0. And another youth national team got to the Euro finals.
Let's see what Spalletti can do. The wrong answer is to get rid of him because what then if the next manager has the same result as Spalletti? Do you throw him out fast too?

Lack of player quality is not an excuse. We won the 2021 tournament with a squad of similar level, even slightly inferior (certainly so after Spinazzola's injury). Moreover Italy's players may not be superstars but they are still very good and there are individuals who are to be considered top players, namely Chiesa and Donnarumma; also watch out for Calafiori in the future because we may have a colossus in the making there. Yes, injuries and unavailabilities screwed us over big time, as Tonali and Udogie in particular could have been a saving grace, but the lack of mentality and organization were the real problem and also what made all the difference 3 years ago. This failure is largely on the manager

In 2010 the team tried really hard but could not break down New Zealand. It also had serious injuries to key players Buffon and Pirlo.

Italy have won 2 Euros, not 3. Also, for most of Italy’s football history the majority of the national team players ply their trade in the Italian league. In 2006 every player played in the Serie A. They won the world cup. I don’t think it’s necessary for Italians to go abroad in order to “level up”. On the contrary, it’s Italian coaches and club presidents who need to have the balls (pun intended) to let young Italians play in the Serie A and stop waiting for them to be approaching 30 before they are considered mature enough.
One more thing, on the topic of coaches. This is something that many ex-managers and players have already stated, and that is that today all across the world but especially evident in Italy, so many youth coaches want to follow the Guardiola model. They want to develop “complex” styles of play which the players must adhere to and leave THEIR mark in order to advance THEIR career, rather than teaching the fundamental skills to the youth and letting them develop and express their creative skills.
I mean....back then Serie A was the best league in the world, so the level of competition in Serie A alone was plenty...like, even just talking about Balon D'Or winners...in the 2005/2006 season alone, to my memory, off the top of my head, there were 5 Balon D'or winners playing in the league at the same time, by comparison the Premier lewgue right now seems like a playground, and i am not even going to to talk about all of the insane level of players that never won that but that won plenty of UCL titles, or League titles, Euro titles, WC titles, like Ibrahimovic, Buffon, Pirlo, Maldini, Del Piero, Trezeguet etc etc, plus the fact that even smaller teams played regularly in UCL and Uefa/Europa league cups.

Italy's national team is struggling because of stupid coaches. Ventura played a 4-2-4 vs Spain in Sept 2017 and lost, then he tried Insigne at regista for Verratti in the first game when Sweden fluked a deflected shot on net then packed 10 men in the box. The answer? To keep going up the wings and cross it in. Insigne was played out of position. When he came in, Ventura gave him no instructions on what tactics to change. Parolo asked him and he shrugged his shoulders. Then in the 2nd leg he tried putting DDR in, instead of the best attacker they had again? That's why we were out.
In 2022 Jorginho missed two penalties vs Switzerland in subsequent games. They went to playoffs again. Had he hit one of those, they're in. Macedonia had 30 shots towards goal and 11 or so on net. Post. Crossbar, and Berrardi missed a complete open net. Then their goal was off a handball.

Obviously clubs are not doing their part. How is the FIGC going to force them? There's a lot of fodder in the league in the primavera, and calciopoli didn't help as TV deals dried up and they were forced to develop and sell players to make money. It's still one of the best leagues in the world at developing talent, it's just doing so for EVERYONE else. Helping to make other national teams competitive and the small guy catching up. 6 Swiss players on their national team play in Italy. 9 Albanians. 5 Slovenians, 4 Slovakians. 32 French. 22 Argentinian, 20 Brazilian. Why are they training everyone else's players and then not able to find spaces for their own.
Had Bosman NOT happened and we were still at 8, that means 8 spots for Italians to continue to develop. Those players that we prodiuce for the youth competitions that have been winning a lot in recent years have spaces to continue to develop instead of foreign crap. Then when you don't have coaches that play lineups to fail, like Ventura, Prandelli vs Spain in 2012 final, and Spalletti in this Euro, and rather play a true pragmatic Italian style, with flair, like Lippi, Capello, Zoff, even Conte (Inzaghi and Gasperini in league for example), we'd be fine.

Absolutely. The first thing I said when Spalletti was appointed Italy's manager was "he isn't suitable" and I stand by it. He's a good coach, but not for a national squad. Di Lorenzo was not only terrible in this tournament but also in the previous one. All of the major problem for Italy, aside from stupid one-time mistakes, came from his side in 2021 as well as 2024; it's mind boggling how he can still be an option for the team selection.

The biggest issue Calafiori should have been starting at 18 at one of the Serie A clubs instead of being sent to Switzerland. Now he will go to England where defense goes to die. The youth level is loaded with world class talent, but it lies on the big clubs to keep Italian kids on their roster and if they loan them loan them to a serie A team that will finish middle bottom of table.
Spaletti was brutal with his selections and lineups. After the albania game he should have thought more pragmatic but instead they were 11 individuals running around a pitch with no cohesive approach. In my opinion, Italy's downfall was a mixture of bad coaching and selection, with a touch of bad luck.
Mancini's Italy of 2021 was a well-crafted machine, with a good balance of offense and defense, slightly better in the second. Mancini, trying to bring the best features of his players up, went for a 4-3-3: Donnarumma as a goalie, Bonucci and Chiellini as centre backs, Di Lorenzo on the right and Spinazzola on the left, Jorginho as playmaker, followes by Barella and Locatelli/Pessina in the middle, with Berardi or Chiesa as rifht wing, Immobile as the main striker and Insigne on the left. Every single player of this team played in the same position for both the national team and their clubs: they perfectly knew what they need to do and how to do it.
Spalletti had to face many problem from the beginning. Most of the previous team players were too old (Bonucci), retired (Chiellini), out of shape (Insigne and Immobile) or injured (Berardi). Also, Tonali's absence was a very heavy blow, since he would have been clearly a starter and would have added a lot of balance in the transition phase between attack and defense.
Unlike Mancini, who doesn't have a standard line-up, Spalletti always uses a 4-2-3-1 and that was a problem: most of Italy top defenders (Bastoni, Dimarco, Mancini, Buongiorno, Gatti just to name a few) right now play with a back 3 sistem with their clubs and are not familiar with the tactics of a back 4 formation. Forcing them into his module was a mistake. Also, Italy's best wingers were kinda avarage (I mean, they're not bad by any means, it just happens we had better ones last time), yet he insisted on having them, which leads us to the last problem: both Retegui and Scamacca used to have a partner striker in their clubs (Gudmunson and Lookman, both very skilled in dribbling) and team up in order to score. With a couple of wingers, they were completely uneffective.
Spalletti, imo, should have adopted a 3-5-2 solution: defenders would have fit better, both strikers would have a partner and the wingers could be swapped forna couple of offensive fullbacks, like Dimarco, Spinazzola or Bellanova.
Lastly, we should also consider that Mancini's strongest point was the midfield: most of Italy's goal in the Euro 2021 came directly from a midfielder or were assisted by one, with wingers having a pivotal role in bringing the team forward. Immobile was more a decoy than an effective striker.
Spalletti's Italy lacked immensely in build-up and struggled to reach the strikers (0 goals by Scamacca and Retegui in 4 matches). Jorginho was not the same playmaker and, frankly, I cannot understand why he was called. Pellegrini and Fagioli were awful. Barella did kinda well though, still not enough. In general, they lacked creativity.
Players like Bonaventura, Orsolini, Colpani or Pessina, very goal-oriented, would have solved the problem, but they were left out.
It must be said that Italian footballers right now are not top notch, with a couple of exceptions. Still, I personally think that, with just a couple of corrections, our selection could have done better. Maybe not winning back to back the tournament, but at least putting up a decent fight for the semis. Feels like they didn't even wanna try. And that is very sad.

Euro 2020 was great and Mancini’s offensive minded 3-2-5 was insane to watch. But that team was never going to play together again as Chiellini and Bonucci were older.

The honest gist of it is that in Italian clubs they prefer foreigners that are experienced at the club level than betting on their youth. ALSO it's cheaper for them to bring youth players from other countries and building them up to then sell them than to develop actual talent. It is OUTRAGEOUS that italian teams barely have italians in their squads. AND THEY ARE OK WITH IT. Look at Milan, Napoli, Juventus or basically any team like Torino and Atalanta. Not even their "primavera" have Italinas. How do you expect to select Italians for a national team when there are none?. They better start developing and betting on local talent again, or they will be like this for a long time. Sacchi has been very adamant about this for the last decade.
I was just listening to Fàbregas talk with Rio Ferdinand about this very thing. That Spain invests in their own youth. Priming them for a success at the national level.

Great analysis. I’ve been an Italy fan all my life and it was sorely disappointing to watch this Euro. I noticed the problems right at the outset when they played Albania. Even though they won, it was not a convincing win and knew that when they would go against Spain, it would not be the same. I can’t help but think that Italian soccer is entering a dark age. Seeing the trends with upcoming talent, the declining status of Seria A as a league, and attitudes of players themselves I think it will be a long while before Italian soccer turns it around. I hope I’m wrong, but I’m not optimistic for the near future. I’m even doubtful they will make the next World Cup! 😢

Managers of youth teams from all around Italy prefer deploying more physical players so they can win youth tournaments, but likewise, they sacrify the development of new footballers.

Beside a lack of international-level players (we've got some) the real issue was the tactics. Spalletti choose players who played a 352 or 3 center back defense and put them out of role in 433. He was not able to read the characteristics of players, and used them like in fut.

A lot of Italy's issues in recent years have come from the unsuccessful attempts at adopting tiki taka. Conte on the other hand had the most typically Italian tactics in 2016 and he did brilliantly.

This was the worst Italian team I've seen in my lifetime which I began watching regularly in the 1982 World Cup. Even though other Italian teams had some bad failures, most of that failure came from an inability to score even when controlling a game, losses in Penalty Kick shootouts, bad luck, bad groups, etc. I have never seen them be this outclassed. They definitively looked inferior to second tier squads like Switzerland and Croatia. Again, I've seen them lose to countries like this many times but never in a manner in which they looked decidedly inferior the way that they did in this tournament (after the first game). You never got the feeling that they were better than a typical third tier team.

Nah, this team was very talented, just zero chemistry and heart. Antonio Conte had the worst team at Euro 2016 due to Verratti and Marchisio being injured. And yet, Conte was a couple spot kicks away against Germany to taking an average team to the semis.

If there's one thing that has been similar in ALL italy's competitions run (even the shittiest ones, like 2010 WC or 2014 WC) is the heart and the passion mixed with toughness our italian players has played with. This is the first time in my life, after also rewatching games of oldest WC or EC, I've seen a bunch of guys just givin up. The majority of the issues come from Spalletti's bad recruiting and lack of putting players in their natural positions; but the cause fo this disaster is also associated to players clearly not wanting the win neither battling for their nation - not all of them, but some people like Scamacca casually walking around the field and couple of days later via IG story on Ibiza doing party and laughing like nothing happened. Serie A managers NEED to develop italian players within their clubs and not relying on foreign players, and players NEED to calm down their ego and start thinking that their 5-6-7 mln € salary is neither granted nor free from duties. Meanwhile, Spalletti has to think about what the actual fucking scheme he wanna run, because he's been horrible to see on the sideline with that attitude and then hearing him on press conference saying a lot of fancy words to hide his total failure in all of aspect of coaching - recruiting, positioning, managing ecc ecc.

Also, in 2006 and 2021 Italy had a group of players being a solid “locker room” and it was perceived through interviews, videos, etc. Spalletti banned PlayStation, smartphones, jokes so the players were united and confident (most of them spoke like 3/4 times before this tournament). Since there was no experience he should have let them being friends. Spalletti is very good at clubs but not as good as C.T.

Personally I think Spalletti was burned out from coaching Napoli, Montella did pretty well with Turkey maybe FIDGC should have thought outside the box. To me not having Sandro Tonali was a huge loss for this team. Just a matter of time until Allegri takes over.
Donnaruma is the only Toplayer. The others are average, maybe less. The problem is that Italy doesn't have 20-goal-strikers.

The main reason we suck so bad is because Spalletti and the FIGC didn't pick players from lower categories , like Serie B, who are more concentrated, with "eyes on the prize", and generally fresher and with more energy at summer because they have a shorter championship (Serie B ends on the first days of May), and instead they rely on these "primadonnas" in Serie A, most of whom are "one foot in the grave", since they are already too old, except for Donnarumma who is one of the best goalkeepers we have (and still can do great things for years to come).
Other than that, it's true that our Serie A is one of the longest competitions (we start around mid-August), but even so, if the players are tired after so many competitions (such as Champions League, Europa League, Coppa Italia) that interrupts Serie A and tires them, it's no wonder the teams won't ggive you their best players.

I didn't think that DiLorenzo played very well at all and was almost a liability in defense. What happened to Leonardo Spinazzola? He was incredibly dynamic in the midfield at the 2021 Euros, until he unfortunately ruptured his Achilles tendon. Maybe he just hasn't been the same, which is truly unfortunate for the Azzurri.
I'm an as Roma supporter. Leo recovered in a long time after the injury. Then he helped Roma to reach the Europa League final, but this year he wasn't so decisive, Now he has been transfered to Napoli were Antonio Conte Is the new coach. Maybe a rebirth for Spinazzola.
The Youth squads have been very successful, thus i have hope that there will be players coming up through their system. The fact that the SerieA is just not as competitive as the other european leagues is troubling though, but as a fan i/we can not despair, we need to support our players. If we look at the other countries ultras and fan following, we have a lot of work to do, which honestly is the only thing we can actually contribute.

I think the absence of Verratti isn’t discussed enough. He was Italy’s best player at the last Euro. He controlled almost every game, except against Spain. And in all of those games that tournament, Italy would noticeably lose control of the game when Verratti was substituted off.
I think that it's a series of factors.
1. Italy indeed is lacking of pure talents now. Surely they have an issue on their child schools.

"The players are not good enough" is a non-starter of an argument. Austria, Switzerland, Turkey, Georgia or Romania haven't got better players than Italy yet they at least tried to play in a coherent manner.
When your players are not that good technically you lead them with instructions that are simple to execute. Prandelli, Conte and Mancini also worked with a squad that had much less talent than those of the 1980s-1990s-2000s but they made it work. Conte's Italy beat Spain with De Sciglio at LWB and Giaccherini and Parolo in midfield! Spalletti instead wanted to show that his ideologies and dogmas were the right way.
Ah, and to make matters worse: he said even before the tournament that he was relying on Inter's players more than the rest AND he delivered on that promise. Frattesi and Darmian kept starting matches even though they were dismal; Darmian had been kicked off the team for many years because of bad performances, Spalletti brought him back. He sidelined all of Juve's players and insisted on relying on players from his past teams (Roma, Inter, Napoli). Even Allegri would have done a better job with this squad.
Talented players? Nope. Donnarumma is the only player with genuine talent in this arse of a squad. Di Lorenzo was criminally bad. Fagioli should never have been picked. Spalletti made enormous errors of judgement. Managing the team with utter arrogance. Time for several players to lose the jersey and for an injection of youth.
Italian football is on the up. Despite recent setbacks. i love Serie A i think it will end up being on par with the German Bundesliga. sadly Serie A will never go back to the good old days of being the best league in the world

Team selection was trash. U17 had 5 guys playing at top level, and the only youngster he played was Califiori.
The funny thing is that this Italy team was also the only team in the tournament that didn't concede a single goal from Spain. All the other teams that faced Spain conceded at least 2 goals from the Spaniards (except for Albania, which conceded only 1 goal, but by then Spain was already qualified and it would have been pointless to risk injuries)

He was just walking almost the entire game not running and when he did get the ball he did fuck all with it. The team underperformed as a whole, but what’s more important than gow good the players played is their attitude while playing. You could see what it meant to Donnaruma, Califiori, and Raspadori to represent the national team and wear the blue jersey. I felt like Scamacca gave the appearance that he could give a fuck less, that it’s a right for him to be playing not a privilege and hate that attitude, it’s toxic.

Great video. This is everything I’ve been saying. No way we were ever gonna win, but going out at the round of 16 and the way we did is inexcusable. A lot of the blame lies with Spalletti, but as you highlighted there was a whole host of other issues, some deep rooted and systemic, some coming down to favoritism/basically nepotism. This was a sad sad showing at the Euros, especially when we could’ve taken advantage of being on the “weaker” side of the bracket. Last time, we were of the harder side and look how we did. There is just no excuse for the circus act this team displayed. Absolutely pathetic and disgraceful.

Almost every World Cup team typically has players that play club football together in some fashion or at least go in the same. These teams are players that plays sporadically throughout the world in Europe South America whatever is not good for the team.
Maybe they didn't do it well this time. I think that Italy is a team which is still under a deep reconstruction. However, I have a huge respect for them in every sport. They are competitive AF. I'm sure that they will make a comeback at some stage. Forza Italia!!! (from a Spanish guy).
As an half Italian and my family being from Italy watching this euros was hard for me and my family we knew our team was good (except Scammaca he is the laziest player i have ever seen) but the managing was for sure poor. Terrible tactics not bringing on players that won you games (Zaccagni) changing/testing formations so many times for sure pissed me aswell as many Italians off. I still don't understand why Ancelotti is NOT manager after showing he is one of the best out there. I think our team/Italy's biggest failure as an Italian fan was for sure the manager and 2nd lack of preparation.

2010-2024 has been a disaster. The one good moment came in 2020-2021, but besides that 1 year stretch it’s been embarrassing to watch these guys. No competent striker, weak midfield, scared players, and a lack of development. Also, I said before the start of the tournament that Di Lorenzo, Jorginho, and Cristante still being called up should send shivers down ppl’s spines… I was ridiculed for it but I was absolutely right, these guys were horrible

They lacked talent at many key positions. Very few (if any) world class players where it matters. But that was known going into the tournament. What was more alarming was how the team showed a complete lack of leadership. They had no champions in the lineup and no reaction to anything bad that happened. It was clear from the first minute of the first game. Teams of the past wouldn’t have let something like that happen and would have responded much better.
Spain demoralized Italy. They didn't want to participate anymore after that physiological beatdown. THAT IS WHAT HAPPENED TO ITALY.

Great video but you failed to mention why the key players Insigne and Verrati were left off Italy. Because of them joining MLS and SA leagues which imo is stupid, this clearly didn’t stop other countries from still selecting those players like Kante or obviously not on the same level but Messi and Ronaldo.

I don't know why he called Cristante again.(He didn't call him in March) I know Locatelli is not the best Dm in the world but he's best than Cristante. The players who didn't should be called again are Mancini,Cristante and Raspadori.

The main factor seems to have been the lack in fitness. I've never seen an Italian squad like this. It seemed like the players were always three steps behind, second to every ball. When you put such a team against young players from Switzerland or Spain who run around like battery rabbits then desaster is programmed. The sheer clearness by which the Swiss defeated Italy without even breaking into sweat was shocking but hardly surprising after you had seen the frist three matches.
For next worldcup, I would play Fagioli, Lucatelli, Tonali, and Zaniolo in the middel field at thesame time. If I play three of them, I will push Zaniolo to forward. And I will put Camarda at #9. Plus Bastoni, Calafiori and Donnarumma. Barella is a liability in keep procession due to his size. Pellegrini is alway fit but he is alway lack of creativity as #10.

2/ Spalletti didn't have much experience in the job and took Italy too late! Not so much to prepare!

Italy can be the one if not the most entertaining teams in world football to watch for a neutral when it comes together for them and they play well as a team. But they just did not turn up at this tournament. They turn up at last tournament though and they were very entertaining in last euro tournament.

I think it needs to be understood that there was going to be a step back with this team. Spalletti deserves very little blame if any. This team lost Chiellini, Bonucci, Belotti due to age & no Immobile or Insigne because they weren’t the strikers they once were. The defense & ESPECIALLY their attack were noticeably worse off. That being said, there was the talent to replace them & most performed like 💩. Donnarumma, Calafiori, Di Lorenzo, Bastoni, Barella & obviously Chiesa were the only starters who had a positive impact. Some of the bench guys were more deserving of starting. I’m hopeful Pellegrini can try to improve in the near future at the national level. Cut all other starters; Darmian, DiMarco & Scamacca especially. I will say Spalletti made some questionable selections going with alot of Inter buddies, but his tactics are successful when the squad actually plays like they’re confident. Reports i’ve heard about players being upset over lack of fun & banning of video games, if I told my nonno about that, he’d call every single player soft & say the team is a disgrace. And the effort we saw against Spain, Croatia & Switzerland matches that description 10000%. Keep Spalletti, keep the defense mostly like it was, and build the midfield & attacking front around Chiesa. He’s gotta be the focus of a strong attack (not alone upfront however, either with 1 or 2 attackers in formation) because we all know Euro 2020 wouldn’t have been won without him

There’s also a very apparent lack of good leadership as you say. Unfortunately, Donnarumma is NOT suited to be captain like the fiery, passionate characters of Chiellini and Bonucci. Recently, Italy gave me confidence when they wiped the floor with the French scum last month, but I say that Mancini, Acerbi (if he is called up), or Jorginho would be excellent candidates for the captaincy.

The way Italy settled into that Final after going down a goal was special. I'm Greek and love to reflect on 2004 all day but I will say I don't think Greece wins that Final if portugal scored first.

International football requires a different approach from a manager. Being a good club manager doesn't mean anything.
They need to do what Canada did with hockey when Canada was losing at the world stage.
The truth is that in italy soccer is no longer played on the streets. Kids go to the Gym to train their bodies and the ones who play soccer are the well-off or recommended kids because not everyone can afford to pay for their kids to play in soccer schools. The result is players who don't know how to dribble and jump over an opponent like Domenghini, Conti or Donadoni did from their school days...then if a cocky coach like Spalletti who the only ones who he did not let play out of position were the goalkeeper and the center forward, is arrives the catastrophe is served!
A lot of stuff went wrong. Poor squad selection, poor tactics by Spalletti, too many switches to the lineup which led to absolutely 0 cohesion, and a lack of development of youth which has resulted in very underwhelming performances from a squad of mostly mediocre players…

The image cover on the video is not fair, chiesa played all the two euros but in this he sucked, Pellegrini is a good player for sure but he had a heart problem 10 years ago and he can't go too fast, but he's not lazy, he was just cooked after a hard season. For justice you should have put chiesa then and chiesa now.
