The title is accurate. But I'll it more specific. JOHN STOCKTON IS THE EPITOME, THE DEFINITION of being a TRUE PG. I don't care what names you can give. Whether it's Magic 'height advantage' Johnson, Steve 'no defense' Nash or Jason 'no shot' Kidd. When you look at the description of a PG in a basketball dictionary, you look at the description of John Stockton right in yo' face. Mad respect for this man who defied all odds throughout his career in an era where 'Bad Boys' prevail and putting up seeming unbreakable records with no outstanding physical attributes whatsoever. This man is just PLAIN BASKETBALL IQ and GENIUS. Missing 23 games in 19 years? And Jazz reaching the playoffs in all 19? TELL EM'!
+P Raj He also played for twenty years. Kidd is one of the greatest PGs of all-time, but it's mostly because his rebound, assist and steal numbers were out of this world. He was NOT a terrific shooter. The league average true shooting % for PGs was 52.7% during his career and he shot 50.7%. That's a large difference. Put it this way: if you play 100 hands of blackjack and win a total of $200, and I play a total of 10 hands and win $100, who had the better outcome?
+P Raj It doesn't matter whether you agree. For his career, he was a below-average efficiency scorer. That means that he produced fewer points per shot than the AVERAGE point guard, much less someone with the 10th best TS% of all-time (Stockton). Stockton was SEVERAL standard deviations better than Kidd at scoring. The fact that you're using FG% like it means something -- that indicates that you don't know what you're talking about when it comes to the opportunity cost of taking a field goal attempt. Jason Kidd is in the 2nd tier of great PGs, and it's because he was excellent at everything EXCEPT scoring. He's one of the best rebounding PGs ever.
John Stockton was way better than kidd just look at the assists stats steals stats and 3 point stats and stockton was a 100 times better than kidd. p Raji is a dumbass Nets fan probably man
I have to say is one of the greats. I have never seen a pg take Jordan to the hole multiple times, hit a game winner over Jordan and block Jordan. He could break down any offense in the NBA and dish to the mailman even when they knew it was coming. He could hit the big shot or just did whatever was needed. Not to mention one of the best defensive players in NBA history.
@Domini478 Yes he did, I watched several games where he did. Jordan secretly obsessed over Stockton getting the best of him. He won't say a bad word about him.
The greatest! Next is Nash, no I didn't forget about magic but he was just labeled a pg he never played like a true pg, not to say he wasn't the greatest laker ever because he was sorry Kobe fans
+Pakistani Gangster This guy is widely acknowledge across all the NBA glories and experts. He has not much media coverage, becaus ehe never sold himself as a product like many others but it is a far different issue then "being underrated". You can hardly get more "unanimous consensus" then the one that Stockton gets. Best PG of all time, he's, relative to its role in the court, the MJ of PGs. Insane game prowess.
+Pakistani Gangster yeah, if you know basketball you know hes one of the greatest true pg's ever. If your a sports center basketball fan, probably not so much
@@straightlead8 in a sense. But if you look at the numbers, Stockton assisted on over 50% of the Jazz's field goals in his years. Over 50%! That's ALL field goals, not just the ones that used an assist. Most of those were to players not named Malone.

I'm going to be real with you... Ervin Magic Johnson was the best athlete at the point guard ever. But when you look up point guard... there will be a picture of Stockton and he will be passing the ball. He's the best.
Zack Rouse they say magic is best because of 5 rings they always over emphasize rings there are a few power forwards who have better stats than tim duncan but he has 5 rings and that takes over everything in their eyes

Grew up watching the Lakers and just remembering how the Stockton, Malone and the Jazz would give them fits. Stockton was such a solid PG and I'm so glad that I was grew up watching one of the golden ages of pro basketball.
John Stockton is the definition of a Point Guard. This is a great compilation. Coupled with one of the greatest movie soundtracks, Last of the Mohicans. Great choice, and thank you to whoever made this video!
Two unbreakable records by the unbreakable man. And still underrated. PGs shooting so much these days is why defenses get away with being so lazy. If Stockton appeared now, he'd look like the goat
I don't get how people always emphasize Stockton just being smart but not athletic - just look at the quickness and speed in a lot of these clips! He may not have been the fastest or quickest but he was up there man.
In 1990 John Stockton averaged 14.5 assists per game and 17.2 ppg which translate into a game average of 47 combined points, that's better than anything Michael Jordan reached and 5 points short of Wilt Chamberlain's 50 ppg and 1 ast total.
Hoang Nguyen Stockton put up these numbers while playing less minutes than Jordan and a lot less minutes than Chamberlain. In these minutes on the floor, Stockton also had the ball 19% of the time, compared to Jordan's close to 35% of the time. I don't know about Chamberlain because they didn't keep records, but I wouldn't be surprised if more than 50% of his team plays were through him. You do the math who is more effective. Not even counting Jordan's two weak last years with the Wizards, Stockton still has a higher Offensive Rating AND a higher Defensive Rating than Jordan.
Ah okay. So Jordan's assist's don't count then. Why the fuck would you even compare Stockton to Jordan? Are you telling us he was better than him? Great analysis...
Jonathan Hunt Yes, Jordan had one or two seasons where he got close to Stockton or beat him by an inch even, but Stockton had a large number of such seasons and overall Stockton is just better both offensively and defensively and most importantly, he is much more efficient. So if you factor in efficiency too, Jordan never was better than Stockton.
My favorite point guard of all time and probably the most fundamentally sound point guards of all time in terms of running an offense. Steve Nash and Bob Cousy and maybe Jason Kidd are the only ones who compare in terms of being a fundamentally sound past first point guard. There needs to be more point guards like this instead of scoring guards like we have today.
I Don't know if you Count The Big-O oscar robertson as a PG or a SG. But him aside. I think the only PG that are really in the conversation as better than John Stockton would be Magic and maybe Isiah. Nash & Kidd are great. Maybe you could argue they were as good. Maybe Rondo, Westbrook, Rose and Chris Paul, Kyrie Irving when it's all said and done will be in the same conversation at the end of their careers.
Ever since the Rockets changed their uniform to that silly one with the cartoon-ish rocket, they were never the same. As much as it hurt, Stockton killed us in in Game 6 in 1997 but I have to admit, he did it with excellence. He is definitely one of the NBA's all time greatest players.
Probably not a popular opinion but, John is not only the best PG, but the best player of all time. His stats are ridiculous. He could score almost at will and made everyone around him better. His all-time assists and steals records will most likely never be broken. He was the most fundamentally sound player to ever step on a court.
David Hert Magic, Stockton, Chris Paul. Three best PG of all-time. Best player of all-time is Dennis Rodman. Look up "The Case for Dennis Rodman" and read the essay. The guy defied the laws of nature with his rebounding.
john stockton is very humble person yet very hard working...he is the best point guard for me..ill miss johny years hope someday he will coach a team...
It just dawned on me that this music is absolutely perfect and sync's seamlessly to the highlights. The Great Mr. John Houston Stockton is indeed "The Last (of the old school ballers)" so I definitely see why this track is so spot-on.
Tireless work ethic, impeccable intelligence and vision, great technique and athleticism, and most importantly, zero ego and selfishness. He knew exactly when to go for the basket himself and when to pass. My favourite basketball player of all time.
Kids today have no idea what basketball is all about. Stockton would show them. At 50 years old he could still play in the NBA.. because his game isn't about just being athletic like the Derrick Roses, and CP3s.... who just barrel into the lane as fast as they can, and go one on one. In every single game that Stockton ever played, he was the best shooter, best passer, and smartest player on the court.
Yeah, Coach never really showed emotion, other than anger... But, it was his attitude the team took onto the floor. Determination was what Sloan was all about. A good man, a great coach. May he RIP.
Maan listen John Stockton was a killer! ANYBODY could get it from Stock, they just ain't respect him cause he was ahead of his time with the hoochie-daddy shorts. Crown this man
Stockton was always my favorite player up until the day he retired. I was only 3 when he started in the NBA in 1984. In the early to mid 90's I started getting into basketball and the closest team to me was the Bullets, I mean err Wizards. They were horrible every year and still are. So my favorite team was the Jazz. I liked that after most players in the NBA went with longer shorts, Stockton stayed with the short shorts, lol.
He was the most shifty.. His Basketball IQ was impeccable... apply this mindset in Life and your moves will be elite and unpredictable to your adversary.. #BasketballisLife
Its insane how dangerous he was. The way he weaves through everything and draws every defender and then just effortlessly dumps it off for the assist. He makes it look easy.
That pass vs the Bulls in the Finals at 2:23 is just as good if not better than anything Aaron Rodgers has ever thrown. He put it in a spot even MJ couldn't get to!
Player Efficiency Rating in the 1991-92 season: John Stockton = 22.8, Isiah Thomas = 16.0 They chose the right PG for the Dream Team, especially if the All-NBA Team selections for the first three years of the 90s are taken into account.
Stockton is underrated. He played in the toughest era of the NBA. Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, Gary Payton and many greats so I don't see how Rondo can be better than that.
Its too bad they only remember Stockton on his clutch against rockets in 1997 playoffs. I know at least 11 other times he was clutch and its rare to have some this on youtube. I have at least 50 games from Jazz and he was clutch in many other times. And to think this guy was 17-14-3 for a whole season and barely voted for mvp. nash did less with no defense and got 2 awards
Actually no. Kobe didnt make playoffs and barely made 3rd NBA team in 2005. Shaq on the other hand was #2 in mvp voting behind Nash and put Heat on Conf Finals. But the other MVP maybe. The logic on this award is always how the player impact the team and the wins. Nash`s Suns was always great in regular season.
Stockton is a legend to me and a hero, I watched him play, along with Jordan and a few orther greats. If Lebron or Kobe were on the same court with John in his prime they would not stand a chance. To this date, this is the only player to ever truly challenge Jordan in his prime. I am a fan of both.
When you watch these highlights, you realize that he is much better than he is given credit for. It's disrespectful when he gets tossed out of the Top 5 all time point guards just because he's 6'1" and white. In his prime, he was dropping 16 points, 13 asts, and 2.5 steals per game for a 10 year stretch.
"In his first 13 seasons, he missed only four games (all in the 1989-90 season) until he missed the first 18 games of the 1997-98 season due to an injured MCL in his left knee sustained in the preseason. That was the only major injury in his career, and he never missed another game after returning from that injury." INSANE
I love this video because it shows the other side of Stockton. Everyone knows him for his assists and steals records, but he was a lethal scorer. He could have easily scored more than 20k points in his career, if he had felt like taking more shots and not involving his team as much as he did.
stockton, jordan, bird, duncan, chamberlain. Clutch? 3 pt? Heart? Defense? High IQ? Durability? You can't argue with this team. Best in their positions. Best Team. This is my Rushmore. For years debated on malone/hakeem/duncan as pf, stockton/magic as pg, and lebron/bird. After the last championship duncan became my pf and bird my sf. As far as pg... Magic was one of the greatest players all round, but stockton was better at just being a point guard.
My favorite point guard of all time.. I'm a rockets fan. This man will rip your heart out.. Every.Single.Time. When Gary says you're the man.. you are that dude.
There are few joys in sports as watching a great point guard do what he does best. With his blue collar, hustling work ethic, John did it better than almost anyone, and longer and at a consistently high level as well. Could have gone for huge money but stayed loyal and displayed integrity. He's a model I wish pros today would strive to emulate!
Stockton is that unassuming guy you play at the YMCA who gets picked last and when the game starts nobody can stop him and he doesn't say a word lol
until he's finished beating your ass, then the look he has on his face right after he wins says it all.
Ryan C he was actually well known for shit talking lol

Never understood why Karl Malone was the "Mailman" when it was Stockton who always delivered to ball to people. And he actually looked like a mailman.
Good point
+Myk Ford maybe it had something to do with a MALone being close to MAIL but that is just a guess

There needs to be more point guards like this instead of scoring guards like we have today.
There is john wall
Arent you forgetting CP3?
you guys are retarded if you think Wall or CP3 are anything close to as good fundamentally as Stockton.
I Don't know if you Count The Big-O oscar robertson as a PG or a SG. But him aside.
I think the only PG that are really in the conversation as better than John Stockton would be Magic and maybe Isiah.
Nash & Kidd are great. Maybe you could argue they were as good.
Maybe
Rondo, Westbrook, Rose and Chris Paul, Kyrie Irving when it's all said and done will be in the same conversation at the end of their careers.
***** Excuse the noob question (fairly recent NBA fan from the UK), but what exactly do you mean by "fundamentally sound"?
Ever since the Rockets changed their uniform to that silly one with the cartoon-ish rocket, they were never the same. As much as it hurt, Stockton killed us in in Game 6 in 1997 but I have to admit, he did it with excellence. He is definitely one of the NBA's all time greatest players.
Warrior fan here since the mid 90's...Nothing but respect. I consider myself lucky watching him carve my team up time and time again lol.
This little white boy was a beast!!!! NBA legend

Him and the Mailman deserved a championship together
Probably not a popular opinion but, John is not only the best PG, but the best player of all time. His stats are ridiculous. He could score almost at will and made everyone around him better. His all-time assists and steals records will most likely never be broken. He was the most fundamentally sound player to ever step on a court.
Totally agree couldnt have said it better myself
No f***ing question
Unfortunately getting beat by jordan in the finals won't help that argument.
David Hert imagine Stockton on a Popovich team with Tim Duncan in his prime.
David Hert Magic, Stockton, Chris Paul. Three best PG of all-time. Best player of all-time is Dennis Rodman. Look up "The Case for Dennis Rodman" and read the essay. The guy defied the laws of nature with his rebounding.
I have slept on Stockton my whole life, why am I just now understanding his greatness
I hate myself
john stockton is very humble person yet very hard working...he is the best point guard for me..ill miss johny years hope someday he will coach a team...
This music makes me want to go into battle
me too.....i bite my computer
last of the mohicans
I get a, fight to the bitter end kind of feeling.
always like the old classic basketball
Amazing player, simple and effective with a great heart. And yes, i think he deserved a ring. I'm a Lakers Fun.
Legend! One of the Best ever World Wide, the NBA/Basketball Fans love him!
2:50 shows you how good he was. Sneaks the ball up over Hakeem. No small task.
that and he switched to the left doing it. stockton was unreal.
Best point guard of all time
Magic Johnson
John Stockton
Rondo
Magic Johnson
hold up boi. let not fuxk with magic
was it just me or could mj not guard him at all.
My favorite player of all time. I lived in SLC area at the time and saw John and Karl play many times.
That shot against the Rockets is what turned me into a die hard fan of Stockton, The Jazz, and basketball in general when I was a kid.
Kids today have no idea what basketball is all about. Stockton would show them. At 50 years old he could still play in the NBA.. because his game isn't about just being athletic like the Derrick Roses, and CP3s.... who just barrel into the lane as fast as they can, and go one on one. In every single game that Stockton ever played, he was the best shooter, best passer, and smartest player on the court.
cp3 best represents stockton. assists and steals is what they both cared about after winning or trying to
Man, seeing Jerry Sloan so happy after Stockton hit that three is one of my favorite moments. Almost brings a tear to my eye
Yeah, Coach never really showed emotion, other than anger... But, it was his attitude the team took onto the floor. Determination was what Sloan was all about. A good man, a great coach. May he RIP.
music choice was perfect
One of my favorite players growing up
Maan listen John Stockton was a killer! ANYBODY could get it from Stock, they just ain't respect him cause he was ahead of his time with the hoochie-daddy shorts. Crown this man
In his prime he used to be guarded and even to guard Michael Jordan, that's how great he was.
I have mad respect for stockton, but man did I hate seeing him tear up my spurs!
He was the most shifty.. His Basketball IQ was impeccable... apply this mindset in Life and your moves will be elite and unpredictable to your adversary.. #BasketballisLife
Absolutely the best point guard ever.
Its insane how dangerous he was. The way he weaves through everything and draws every defender and then just effortlessly dumps it off for the assist. He makes it look easy.
Best PG of the 90"s.
Luiz Gustavo *All Time*
Luiz Gustavo and Don't tell me Magic Johnson Is Better I Got 1000 Reasons Why Stockton is 💯 percent better Than Magic
Stock was one quick little motha wasn't he?
That pass vs the Bulls in the Finals at 2:23 is just as good if not better than anything Aaron Rodgers has ever thrown. He put it in a spot even MJ couldn't get to!
Imagine the chemistry between Malone & Stockton! Superb!
i would trade a family member for Stockton
Lmao
***** lol go for it
best choice you ever had
😂😂🤣🤣🤣🤣
betabyfar87 LOL. Which one?
Player Efficiency Rating in the 1991-92 season: John Stockton = 22.8, Isiah Thomas = 16.0
They chose the right PG for the Dream Team, especially if the All-NBA Team selections for the first three years of the 90s are taken into account.
People forget Stockton used to give the bulls that work
What does "that work" mean?
@@holdingtonfarley4444 a hard time
Stockton is underrated. He played in the toughest era of the NBA. Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, Gary Payton and many greats so I don't see how Rondo can be better than that.
john stockton oh my goodness is my favorite point guard of all time!
thanks for uploading. God bless.
He's one of the players that makes me wish I was alive to watch 90s NBA.
I can't remember even one time Stockton got ripped while he was dribbling, such sick handle
+Mr. Entringer You have no idea of what you are talking about sir just shut up and go home you are drunk.
All I put were facts kid. get lost. you post nothing here.
Nash's MVPs are trash. Kobe probably should've won it both times instead of Nash. Lol.
+Mr. Entringer shaq being 2nd in mvp wit d
wade is trash lls d.wade was the man on that team
Greatest PG in the history of the NBA. Stats don’t lie. All time leader in Steals and Assists. Insert biased argument here👇
Let's all agree John Stockton is the best point guard ever
RKOJ ason03 he is the 2nd best behind Magic
I agree 100%
+Kelly Divine Uncontested first to me.
The best no doubt. Magic couldn't touch him, people just say that magic is better because he has aids
RKOJason03 nah magic is better
John Stockton schooled everybody. Even Michael Jordan!!
10 time all star, leading assist in history, precision passer, precision shooter. Never sleep on Stockton.
"In his first 13 seasons, he missed only four games (all in the 1989-90 season) until he missed the first 18 games of the 1997-98 season due to an injured MCL in his left knee sustained in the preseason. That was the only major injury in his career, and he never missed another game after returning from that injury."
INSANE
3:26 pure gold
These are plays we have all done on the playground. Simple basketball moves. Only Stockton did them against professional athletes.
O
But he has master the fundamental
Team player defined.
I love this video because it shows the other side of Stockton. Everyone knows him for his assists and steals records, but he was a lethal scorer. He could have easily scored more than 20k points in his career, if he had felt like taking more shots and not involving his team as much as he did.
The Best PG. Zdecydowanie najlepszy rozgrywający.
Stockton was last of his kind and last of the mohicans apparently.
stockton, jordan, bird, duncan, chamberlain.
Clutch? 3 pt? Heart? Defense? High IQ?
TheAngryCanary yeah because lebron has disapointed a lot of people and duncan has had more success i agree with you on that TheAngryCanary
TheAngryCanary take Duncan off that
steph curry... whew. might have to change my lineup again. cant believe someone can shoot like that. hawkeye
Wilt is trash
TheAngryCanary
Gary Payton
Joe Dumars
Scottie Pippen
Dennis Rodman
Shaquille O'Neal
would absolutely shit on that team.
PG - John Stockton
SG - Jerry West
SF - Larry Bird
PF - Dirk Nowitzki
C - Bill Walton
Hopefully someone gets it =)
They're all white
+Niczer0 They are all great 3 point shooters?
Really dirk over Mchale?
+Niczer0 The best possible nba team? Because it is.
Hahah, probably the smartest lineup in NBA history! Add either Rick Barry or Kevin McHale off the bench and you've got a team FOR THE AGES!!!
;-D
My favorite point guard of all time.. I'm a rockets fan. This man will rip your heart out.. Every.Single.Time. When Gary says you're the man.. you are that dude.
There are few joys in sports as watching a great point guard do what he does best. With his blue collar, hustling work ethic, John did it better than almost anyone, and longer and at a consistently high level as well. Could have gone for huge money but stayed loyal and displayed integrity. He's a model I wish pros today would strive to emulate!
