  • Hello everyone, my name is Duong.
    I am 32 years old.
I live in a poor mountainous area of Vietnam.
From a young age, I had to work hard to help my parents.
Difficult life is always around, I work and learn everything from my grandparents and the old people in the village.
    Gradually, I mastered the skills.
5 years ago, I decided to live the challenge.
Determined to learn about the primitive way of life, I chose to live in the wilderness, alone.
Where there's no technology and forcing yourself to pass, it feels great!
How about you? Your life is definitely different from mine.
    Have fun watching the video!

As a woodworker, I am forever amazed at your carpentry skills. I don’t think many people understand how precise your mortise & tenon joins need to be when you have multiple intersections. One tiny mistake can throw the alignment off. And the boards being planed with just a knife! This is hard to pull off even with a fully equipped work shop. You are truly, what we would call in the USA, a wood crafting badass. 👍💪🏼👏

That is quite possibly some of the most satisfying woodworking I have seen in the last 50 years. You have a very good "eye" Duong. This is a good choice of project for your back too, first of all, not lifting heavy rocks all day, the wood appears well seasoned, so is drier and therefore not so heavy. Not all the work is sitting low down and bent double, the standing for longer pieces, affords your spine better comfort and a break from crouching down. The detailed work takes some time, so you are not moving about too quickly, yet not staying still. The work does not require huge force from you so that helps ease shock loads on your skeleton and it's supporting sinews. You are doing something useful so that is good for the mind and there is some problem solving, which is even better. I love what you did and I love that you found something to do that does not use pain to remind you about the injury that is still mending, as that is so wearing on both mind and body. You do great work with wood and your bare hands, I certainly could not match it, but I can aspire to that level of quality in what I do. I'm excited for the next videos, no rush as I know rushing is not good for your health, but when you are ready I'll still be here looking forward to to seeing what you did next. The loom looks beautiful so far. I hope it goes smoothly for you. Thank you for sharing, Be well. 😉

The rice field soil may be lacking in nitrates to fully nourish the seedlings. During your next planting phase, it will be a good idea to fertilize the soil. Try using compost made with the oils and remains of fish. Turn the inedible parts of fish into a fine paste, and mix into the paddy water. It will provide nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. This will attract insects and pests, but your rice yield should improve significantly.
Your loom is well crafted! Your carpentry skills continue to amaze me. Will you treat the wood? It will protect your loom and keep it from warping due to heat and humidity changes. It's a fine machine, don't you think? Sealing the wood will ensure your loom lasts for many years. It will be amazing to see what you'll weave with your own cotton. I'm eager to see how the loom works so that I can learn by watching your videos.
Have a good weekend with your family, and thank you for all of your hard work!

A dream long time in the making that is now coming true! Your building skills are amazing, and its so good to see you now being able to come full circle with this project! : ) Once you do spin a cloth into something useful, please don’t stop there with this wonderful craft. Continue to grow cotton, explore flax and other organic fibers that can be spun into thread and woven into cloth! A wonderful primitive skill! Congratulations! : )

PLEASE make a bamboo wind chime!! It will add a beautiful background sound to your environment!
Also maybe you could forge some metal hooks to hang some of your baskets on the walls instead of the attic? That can help you keep your space more organized and comfortable.
Could also make some hanging shelves attached to the walls to also help with storage and organization. Less things on the floor, more cleaner space.
You could have some shelves that stand on the floor and some that are hanging on the walls. Just helps keep the baskets with baskets, cages with cages, bowls with bowls and cups with cups.
Similarly, try to make a shelf on the window! There's plenty of space there, just have a spot to put clean dishes to dry after being washed. Or, to keep kitchen utensils like kitchen knives, forks, chop sticks, spatula, wooden spoon, tongs...
Also, maybe forge some metal spoons? A metal spatula? Metal tongs, metal chop sticks, KITCHEN knives (use these knives only in the kitchen, keep your knives separated), metal forks.
    Keep upgrading your space!!!
And remember, use your legs when lifting heavy things!!!

You never disappoint us, What you do is constantly amazing to us, your followers. I personally thank you for staying true to the promise you made at the beginning of your channel. To teach us the skills you learned from your forefathers. It hasn't been easy to stay on this path both mentally and physically, but you continue to do so, which makes you a true hero in my eyes. I know eventually your back may force you to stop, because of the hard physical side of doing everything in the old ways. But I hope you will always be able to show us these ways in part. Take care my friend, wishing you and your family the best possible future.

You need to build a maggot farm. Place animal remains and plant life in a bucket and keep it full of water. As the flys land and lay eggs you will end up with a bunch of maggots that the chickens will love and it's great protein for them.

The three things I figured that you could make that would have the biggest impact on the farm all seem trivial, but I think they will help. You could make a tablecloth, which will make mealtimes nicer. You could make some curtains for your hut's big window. Finally, you could make a long strip of hem to attach to a big piece of mosquito netting to drape over your bed for when you sleep there.
Also if the soil in the rice fields is poor this year, there are things you can do to make it better. If you can grow something like clover over the winter and till it in, it will help. You can also try growing peanuts somewhere nearby - they lock nitrogen in the soil - and moving some of that dirt into the paddy afterwards. Peanuts are also just good food for people and animals. You can also try taking a scythe and cutting a lot of random plants down and laying them in the bottom of the paddy along with wood ash, wood chips, and maybe some pig shit. Letting that sit over winter before tilling it in and flooding the paddys may help. Of course, you probably knew all this anyway, but I figured it couldn't hurt to suggest.

The trick Duong uses at 19:45 or thereabouts is actually super clever. He's using momentum and the weight of the blade & the wood to act as a very accurate chopping tool. It's like using an axe in triangle formation to split a branch: you place the bit/ blade of the axe against an upper edge of the firewood, the base of the handle against the wood, and then you lift both together and bring them down together, so that wood and axe both hit the ground...and the impact itself drives the blade into the wood. It allows for absolute accuracy on where the cut will take place, because the blade is already pressed against that spot, and increases safety at the same time.

I watched the video 3 times before writing a comment.
I can't count the number of times I've seen videos of people refining iron and making tools, but I think this weaving project will be the same.
I would like to respect and praise the fact that a single person possesses such outstanding knowledge and skills.
    it is really amazing!
Your weaving project will be a great achievement in promoting the knowledge of traditional Vietnamese weaving.
    Cloth has endless possibilities.
From now on, we recommend that you involve your wife in the dyeing and processing.
Women are very sensitive to fashion 😊
I never imagined that it would be possible to make such a full-fledged weaving machine.

    Dear Duong,
A junior farmer here, may I not know anything about Rice. I do know something about soils. I have a feeling you are depleting your farmland faster then you think. Your live in a tropical area, where plant live short quick lives, the natural cycle uses then even faster after death. By weeding and growing crops to feed yourself and the animals. You are move nutrients, food for your plants, for the fields to the animal pens. However, you don't move manure from the animals back to the farm. This in combination with the local biology in the soil will cause fast loss of productivity in your corps. My suggestion is to make a lot of compost with dead trees, leaves, dried grass, old vegetables, or anything else organic to feed the plants. Consider collecting pig and chicken manure to feed the soils some nutrients back.
Hope this helps, remember agriculture is the base of our existence
    Best of luck
    Blue from Belgium

You know you end up working twice as hard when you throw stuff down, just to have to bend over and pick it back up. It is hard on your back and wastes time. Plan ahead handle things once and set them down where they belong or will be used next.

So good to see all your projects, such as the loom. Might it be possible to use the chicken droppings with dried grass and leaves to make compost for the rice?
