A small barb on the end of your spear tip would help keep the fish and crabs from sliding off. It would make retrieving them from under stone overhangs easier. You have created yet another useful item to add to your tool kit. Very nice.🙂👍

As a blacksmith. I must offer my thoughts on your forging technique. I notice that you are always rolling the steel around to keep it round, presumably. The proper way to elongate steel is to forge it close to the final dimension square, rotating the steel 90° per turn. Then knock the corners off, making it an octagon. Then finally, round. This will drastically improve the speed of your forgings.

Is the rubber prepared just by pressing, drying, and sometimes smoking? I'm surprised it is so stretchy without vulcanization. (mixing raw rubber with sulfur and cooking) Enjoy living your dream, and good luck in the new solar year!

My wife suggest Marigolds (Calendula Officinalis) for your insect problem. There are about 50 different kinds of the flower, they are commonly referred to as Tagetes. You plant them along with your retables and it helps to keep the insects away. At least it has helped her a lot over here in the states and it is a common practice to plant them in the vetoable beds in a lot pf places.

Also @PrimitiveSkillsnet 2 rods, steel, one at each end of a plant bed, and wrap one rod with the copper wire, run it underground to the other steel rod and wrap it around it. It keeps bugs away and helps with growth, didn't believe it till I tried it.

  • @dorsk84

Once the plants have established themselves. Release a few chickens to eat the bugs. They will also scratch the dirt and poop helong keep the soil lose and fertilized.
Also, fix your water wheel. So you dont have to hand pump your billows.

it's cool how you have some form of farming opportunity all year round. over by me, the winters strip leaves off the trees and leave everything green to die (save for the tree trunks, some evergreens, and some dormant tubers) under grey skies and frozen snow
also, nice quality rubber! i am surprised how (relatively) little processing is needed to get the final product from raw latex sap
and, maybe putting a barb on the end of the spear will help keep the fish still once speared

@@PrimitiveSkillsnet have you thought about making a pump drill? It will be very useful when you repair the water wheel.
The design for the drill is very simple, and it would not take very long to build.
I was also thinking of how to improve your saw. You should sharpen the teeth, which you can do using the corner edge of a stone to get between the teeth sharpening the edges. You could also try setting the teeth on the saw. This involves individually bending the teeth slightly to alternating sides. This will mean the saw cuts a wider path through the wood which means the blade will get stuck less often.
I wish good health for you and your family!

  • @STONEDay
    @STONEDay 10 місяців тому +2

Thanks for sharing. I suggest put fat inside the gun to grease it and reduce friction...it will have more power that way (less friction/power loss)..careful not to get the grease on the rubber or it will make the rubber weak. Also good to stop rust on the iron. Maybe a forked end on the spear to help you hunt? Happy new year to you!

Duong, you could also use the rubber to make a slingshot for hunting birds and other small animals?
You can also combine the rubber with fabric and make a water skin, or water proof hat? You can also make moulds that you dip into the liquid latex, and then peel off the rubber when it dries. This is how they manufacture balloons and condoms.

During these cold months, it would be the ideal time to begin preparing for warmer weather. Things that take a lot of time to perform such as making rope, ash fertilizer and soap should be prioritized in anticipation of the warmer season. If you are able, I suggest starting the process of making rope. Brinkman Crafts has a video about medieval rope making with bast, that uses nothing more than a homemade wooden reel and stick, which can be quickly and simply made, and should provide great help to you in your future builds.

It is difficult to find fish during the day, but at night, when the fish comes out of shelters, by the light of a torch, fishing will be more successful. In one hand is a torch, in the other a long spear with a trident. In the beginning, it will be difficult to hit the fish with a spear, but you learn quickly. Fishing turns out to be gambling. In Russia, we fish like this at night with a spear.

Duong, I have been thinking about the issue with the chickens getting into your garden. Perhaps if you weaved a netting of some sort or weaved a bamboo "net" , put it up just high enough off the ground to allow growth height of the cabbages and put up sides up too, this might stop the chickens from destroying your crop. You might try building a few "cages" to try this out first.

i was distracted looking at the grindstone while you where working the fordge... maybe you could build a small foot powered thing to spin it so you can use it again... that is if the water and stone method dosen't do it better...
