This particular song is THE GREATEST COUNTRY AND WESTERN SONG EVER PERFORMED!!!! And, there is NO ONE ELSE that can perform "He Stopped Loving Her Today" like George Jones!!!! NO ONE!!!
It is common in the South to place a wreath on the door of the deceased. it used to be tradition for the deceased to be in the home until the funeral until a church service - not as common now because of nicer funeral homes. The song is really summed up with 2 lines in the song itself: "He said I'll love you 'til I die" ; "He stopped loving her today." Love how you appreciate the song and George. One of the all-time greats.
This song is practically my life story too. My ex and I separated over 20 years ago. She loved the party life, I didn't so we separated. During all this time, even today, while she lived with different men over the years, I remained single and celibate. Well she passed away a few years ago. I remained faithful to her, and true to our marriage vows. Though I am still single and alone and life has been lonely, I have been alone, and lived alone all these years, and I will be okay.
Yep he died of a broken heart, he was not willing to give up his love for her. And it’s ok that you cried, so do I, every time I think of this song and what has happened in my life
I couldn't count the number of times I have heard this song and I believe I tear up every time I hear it. It's about a man who says "I'll love you till I die" and he did exactly that. Loves like that are not so common anymore so I think we all appreciate it even more when we actually hear of a case where it is true. Wedding vows that promised "till death do us part" used to mean precisely that a few decades ago but now they could more accurately be amended to say, "I promise to love you until I decide I could be happier without you and then I'm out of here." The thing is, I think it is an unfair burden to place on another person to make them responsible for your happiness. You make YOURSELF happy and then you don't have to change partners so often because your happiness is something you have inside of you. Pardon the rant but I'm old school and when I promised my husband I would love him till I die, I meant it and actually I have now loved him 15 years PAST the time of his death and I don't see any sign that I will be stopping anytime soon. EOR (End of rant!)
Congratulations, sister! You understood the story correctly. Yes, it's about a man's deep, unfailing love for a woman who sadly stopped loving him long ago. The song is both very beautiful (because true love is very beautiful) and very sad (because a broken heart is very painful, and it's truly human to experience both joy and pain in life. That you understood shows that you yourself have a tender heart. God bless you!
He said "I'll love you till I die.". She told him "you'll forget in time.' when she left him. He went half crazy thru it all. He would read her letters dated 1962 ( it had been years she wrote those letters) by his bed, underlining every single I love you that she wrote in red. He died and finally stopped loving her.
"He said, 'I'll love you 'til I die'. He stopped loving her today." He loved her to the very end, even though she left him years before. You're sorry you cried? Anyone who doesn't cry the first half dozen times hearing this song has a cold, cold heart.
Great Job!! You got it!! Completely! The spoken parts had to be “ spliced together” because of Jones Drinking and slurred speaking. However this song resurrected the career of quite possibly one of the greatest singers of all times and genres. This song is routinely put at the top of the country music songs of all time, along with Jones ex wife’s Tammy Wynette’s song “Stand by your Man”!
I loved your reaction when you realized why he was now smiling. I knew you got it even before George said "They placed a reef upon his door"". Even before you spoke about it. I was in my fifties before I found a love like this and though we are no longer together and I am now 70 I know this is when my love for her sill end. We are still great friends but she has moved on and I know I never can..
George Jones. Giving a master class in country singing. No one can touch his voice. I doubt anyone ever will. The pain that is so easy to hear in George's gifted voice comes from his horrible childhood. George Jones can plumb emotional depths that very few artists can touch with a voice that is timeless. Tip of the hat to Bobby Braddock, who wrote this song. God Bless George Jones.
Anointed: George Jones was married to and sang together with the beautiful Tammy Wynette. (The Love of His Life) She divorced him and even took his band when she left. He always put on a good face although you could see it in his eyes that he never got over her. He always said this song was not about her, but everyone knew it was.
I got to see George Jones Tammy Wynette, and the headliner, Loretta Lynn, in CT when I was a little kid! I loved country music, and I'm so happy my mom took me! (none of the other kids! Thanks Mom!!)
The meaning of this song as I understand it is that they were a couple and they parted and he said "I'll love you til I die" her response essentially was "you'll get over me" He never did. He never got over her. He kept her pictures and letters. I'm assuming he never had another Love. They only way he could stop loving her was to die. I have seen people get confused about the line "the first i'd seen him smile in years. I assume it was placed after his death. "All dressed up took away" is the give away. Also, she came to see him the for the last time and the singer comments that "This time he's over her for good" This song breaks my heart every time I hear it.
You wouldn't be human if you didn't cry after hearing this great song. The only one that affects me more than this one, is when another great singer named Alan Jackson did this song at George Jones funeral, in front of George's family and hundreds of friends. Have a box of tissues if you watch that one.
I've heard this song probably hundreds of times, and I was crying right along with you, baby. 😢 And you nailed the interpretation - spot-on! Thank you so much for your wonderful and heartfelt reaction. 💖 PS: We love your beautiful accent!
I think that you should consider listening to other songs performed by George Jones. They are as follows: 1) Walk Through This World With Me. And, 2) The Grand Tour
Don't apologize for crying to this song. If you don't, I really worry about your heart. I've heard this song dozens of times, and every single time, it brings tears to my eyes.
An apology for tears is not necessary, Dear; it shows you're human, have strong emotions, understand the message in the song, and the music and lyrics touch something positive in your soul, even if the topic is death. Here, the concept of love overcomes that of death.
This particular song is about a man who LOVED A WOMAN UNTIL THE DAY HE DIED!!! He was put in an institutional facility and LOVED HER WITH ALL OF HIS HEART!!!! HE WAS SADDENED BY NOT BEING ABLE TO BE WITH HER!! The last time that he smiled was when he had passed.
I think that when I first heard this particular song, I had a much older relative explain to me that laying a wreath upon someone's door was a common practice when someone had passed away when they were at a facility like a nursing home or some kind of institution like for people who were mentally challenged. I don't fully remember, but I think that is what I was told. I had a couple of relatives work in nursing homes and mental hospitals.
Shared your reaction. Enjoyed sharing with you. I would have appreciated a comment on the musical orchestration but everyone, even those who don't get the guy died, react to the first harmonica that comes in around the pictures on the wall.
They met and were in love, then she left him, he told her he would love her until he died, she told him he would forget her in time, he never did stop loving her or forget her.

@@knottreel1787 No, she told him to forget her because she was splitting up with him and wanted him to get over her. She was never dying in this song. Smh.
@@knottreel1787 Where did you come up with your way of hearing this song. She didn't die, she left him, but he would never stop loving her until he took his last breath. She was not worthy of his love, she up and left him, telling him you forget in time. He never forgot. He kept loving her to the day he died.

There is no way to listen to this without tearing up.

Hey kept his words to her. He loved her until the day he died. This song has made me weepy since I was a 9 year-old kid, in 1980.
