I saw the exact moment you realized that the reason he stopped loving her was because he died. Your face told the story and I immediately thought, "Aha! He gets it!". I'm glad you understood the symbolism of the wreath on the door. Also, in spite of that wreath on the door and "soon they'll carry him away " (pallbearers), "first time I've seen him smile in years" (undertakers usually put a slight smile on the face of the deceased), "I didn't see a tear" (no, because he's dead!), etc. etc. many reactors totally miss the fact that he died. The most bizarre reaction to this song I ever saw was the person who was grinning from ear to ear as he rejoiced in the fact that the man finally put her behind him and moved on to another relationship. NO NO NO NO NO! He said "I'll love you till I die" and he did just that. He loved her until he died. Country music is not primarily about the beat or the instruments or even the tune. It is about the story and those reactors who missed the story missed the whole point of the song! No wonder so many people don't like country music. THEY DON'T LISTEN! Great reaction! FYI, when they pitched this song to George he did not want to record it. He reportedly said, "It's too damn sad and no one will want to listen to it." He was slightly wrong because actually this turned out to be his biggest hit! Another Jones song that I would love to see you react to is 50,000 Names.
Thank you, great analysis! George Jones touched so many hearts during his legendary career. Another George you may appreciate is George Strait (another legend, although younger than George Jones). He also has many heartfelt songs that you may like.
George was my dad's favorite singer. I didn't appreciate him when I was young but I do now. I like some of his earlier songs which are more upbeat, like White Lightnin' and The Race is On. But he can tear your heart out with songs like this, as well as The Grand Tour and The Door.
you are one of few reactors who understand this song and that he died. if you get the chance, check out some of George Jones with Tammy Wynette, which was his wife for a brief period. also, another couple of songs by George Jones that are great - The Grand Tour and I Don't Need No Rocking Chair. glad you did this one...thanks
There is a reason it has been voted the #1 country song of all times repeatedly. It became George Jones’s signature song (he did not want to record it he said “It’s too damn sad”). I remember seeing the special 100 greatest country music songs, they would announce the song, talk to the artist, talk to the songwriter talk to other artists who were influenced by that song. When it came to “He Stopped Loving Her Today” they cut to Maya Angelou (not exactly the first name when you think of country music) she said, “This song tells the story of unrequited love in less than four minutes better and more beautifully than some thousand page novels”. This was 10-15 years ago I have not heard anyone sum it up better than that.
One reason I love to watch your reactions is that you interpret the lyrics so well. You truly listen to the words and you show your emotions on your face. I look forward to every new reaction. You're my #1 favorite. Blessings 🙏
At first George didn't want to release this song. He thought it was to morbid. No one likes song's about death. It's now one of the greatest song's ever
"He Stopped Loving Her Today" us ABSOLUTELY AND POSITIVELY THE GREATEST COUNTRY AND WESTERN SONG OF ALL TIME!!!! NO ONE can sing this particular song quite like "THE POSSUM!!!" WOW!!! George is such an amazing Country singer. One of the best ever. You should check out him singing "The Grand Tour". He loved Tammy Wynette, and never got over losing her. It was a true love/hate relationship. Tammy has a great catalog of her own iconic Country music. She and George are Country music royalty. George was notoriously known for getting drunk and not being able to perform. His nickname was "No Show Jones ", and was also known as "Possum " due to his small, close set eyes. I got to see him in person twice .He was completely wasted both times, but he DID show up! Bless him and may he RIP.
He said, "I'll love you 'til I die." She said, "Aww you'll forget in time." He was right, she was wrong. He loved her until he died then finally stopped.
A lot of country music lists rate this as the best country song of all time. If you're interested in classic country groups, check out the Statler Brothers, who were very popular in the 60s and 70s. I'd recommend starting with 'Bed Of Rose's' to get the full feel of their harmony and storytelling.
You did good ! Not all reactors get "it" on the first playthrough. Another sad song that's far more obvious is Mac Davis - "Whoever Finds This, I Love You"
I've seen quite a few reactions where they never get that he died. I can understand that in some areas they may not pick up on the meaning of the wreath but they should pick up on "soon they'll carry him away." Any southerner my age would get it very quickly.
You are one of the very few who actually listen to the songs. Thank you Bubba. If that generator thingy ever spits out another Brooks & Dunn, I hope it’s Boot scootin’ boogie. You’ll love it.
This song is very close to a trues story! George Jones is one of the greatest Country Legend! He was married to Country singer Tammy Wynette. They done several duets together! Their relationship was very tumultuous! He was a several alcoholic! That why they named him "No Show" Jones or possum. He would get to drunk & not show up to his own shows. He would tear up Hotels, fight with Tammy. She hung in there as long as she could, which is way longer than I would've!! She had a solo career too. Later on in life he finally married Nancy and Tammy died before George, but he still loved her til then!! You should try a song of his called If Drinking Don't Kill Me!!
This song will always have a special place in my heart. Not only is it the best country song ever written, but it was my dad's most favorite song of all time, and he could sing it beautifully. Thanks for the reaction.
You got it right away, I'm impressed! That means you paid attention! George Jones has the perfect voice for this kind of song! I saw the exact moment you realized it was him that died, your face is very expressive! Most people don't get it at all, because they aren't really paying attention! Thank you for your thoughtful and intelligent reaction!
You got it right! Saddest country music song ever. I remember Geroge saying in an interview that initially he didn't want to record the song because it was so depressing....but he did and people loved it.
I watch a lot of these reaction videos, and so far , you're the only one that got it . I can't tell you how many people said he looks like Jim Carrey .
I love the reaction to this song. Because eveyone says what the heck you mean he died loving her. Yes, he died loving her the wreath on the door and carried him away. He did die loving her.
This was my Daddys song. Him and Momma was Married 23 Years then they divorced. He never remarried so when he passed in 2001 He stopped loving her. I got to see George in concert when he did this song I shed tears for my Dad. Today is his Birthday. Happy BD Daddy R.I.P. I know U R chaseing her around up there. Lol
George Jones has the finest country voice ever. Everyone else can fight it out for second place. George's horrible childhood combined with his gifted voice gives you this brilliant, immortal song. How deep is the pain that George feels while singing this song? Many fans feel it too. Tears flowing for George and his dead friend. God Bless George Jones. RIP George.
Martina McBride "I'm Gonna Love You Through It" pleeeez! Wouldn't it be amazing to use your platform to save just one life...October is BREAST CANCER AWARENESS and early detection can be lifesaving. It was for me. Thanks y'all. ❤❤❤❤❤

Of course. Will you stop loving your wife if she passes before you??? Think it through. You won't stop loving her until YOU'RE dead. Lol. Yes, beautiful indeed.
Rarely can I hear a Possum song without hearing my father's voice. As well as Merle Haggard, Vern Gosdin, Johnny Rodriguez, and so many more. I grew up surrounded by this music, being sung by family and friends, around the picnic table, kitchen table, and just standing under a tree picking the guitar. I appreciate it now so much more than I did then.

BTW, here's one that has a bigger story .... called Choices. George recorded it, but come the ACM Awards, the big bosses didn't want George to sing it, saying they were short on time. Really? One of the greats and he wasn't given the time? So George didn't go but his good friend Alan Jackson had a plan up his sleeve. He was told to shorten his song but that he could do two if he wanted. Well, he started with Pop A Top but then merged into Choices and then walked off the stage, leaving the big bosses' mouths open I'm sure, but the audience went nuts. Here's the video. #2 song I've heard from you today. By the way Hank Williams SR was a very famous country music singer as well as Hank Williams JR (HWJR) Hank Sr was famous before WW2 I believe and died in the 50's.
Please check out a song that isn't played on main stream radio. It's a song not many people know but it's beautiful. The song is called MAUREEN and it's was written for and sung by Jim Reeves. Earphones a must to hear his incredible voice. Best wishes from the Emerald Isle 👍🍀😁
1) What they unfortunately call "country music" today...isn't! It is no more real country music than rap or hip-hop is Rhythm and Blues, or 70s Soul. The so-called country music of today simply does not have any heart, soul or message to it. It's an inch deep at best, and usually less. While the real stuff from the 60s and 70s, and even into the 80s, and occasionally the 90s (Keith Whitley, for example), is miles deep. 2) While there are many kinds of country, including some really funny songs, or otherwise not serious subject matter, a lot of it is fairly serious and deep. Not always as "deep and final" as this especially morose song, but still some good messages. Often laid deep between the lines, and not always front and center. 3) Lots of the 60s and 70s country music not only are story songs, but often they have surprise endings, and conclusions, like this one, that are not immediately obvious. But which cause one to have to back up and think about what was already said...and HOW it was said. So the listener can reevaluate what they originally thought was happening, and understand how the surprise ending of the story was built up to. These stories are often more cleverly told than one will realize at the first or second listen. Because often there are little details that you might not notice for years or, in my case, certainly decades in some cases. 4) Often, the clues are in what is NOT said. Things that are conspicuous...by their absence. I can't think of an example in this particular song, but there are lots of these types of conspicuously absent clues in many country songs. Think of them as the verbal equivalent of a clean, bare spot on the wall...where a painting once hung. The only example that comes immediately to mind, is in a George Jones & Tammy Wynette song, "My Elusive Dreams". In this song, about a wife who follows her husband's somewhat unfocused and wild dreams around the country, trying to make their fortune, and not finding their dreams in every place they go, there is one line which references a child, "I had your child in Memphis, then you heard of work in Nashville, we didn't find it there...so we moved on." "From a small farm in Nebraska. To a gold mine in Alaska. We didn't find it there, so we moved on. And now we've left Alaska, because there was no gold mine. But this time...only TWO of us, moved on. And now all we have...is each other. And just a 𝑙𝑖𝑡𝑡𝑙𝑒 𝑚𝑒𝑚𝑜𝑟𝑦...to cling to. And still, I won't let you go on alone...." Although it is not stated directly, because it hurts too much for the couple inside the story to say it out loud, they lost their only child to the bitter cold of Alaska, living rough on the edge, trying to make money out of a gold mine that they'd been sold that turned out to be nothing but a hoax. A, place that they found out too late, something that the listener to the song has intuited already, which is that they should never have taken their baby to such a dangerous place, to search for gold in the rural wilds of Alaska. Some times in such story songs, things that are too painful, are not said, but instead left conspicuously blank in the song, and many times are far less obvious than this tragedy, but they're there, if you listen carefully. Sometimes it takes decades of listening to a song to figure them out, or figure out what the song might have been saying. The "blank spot on the wall" can sometimes be filled by more than one possible answer, in some cases. So sometimes the answer to a song question is subjective. But quite often it is something that shouldn't have had to happen. "My Elusive Dreams" George Jones & Tammy Wynette ua-cam.com/video/P8hElLJAuOI/v-deo.html
You should dive in to his enormous catalogue of songs spanning 60 years. He was nick named The Possum. And he was also called The Rolls-Royce of Country Music. Even a certain Sinatra said he had the second best voice in the world... He struggled a lot with booze and cocain, but eventually shook the habits. He was certainly one of the ultimatum bests. Sadly we lost him in 2013. RIP, Possum. Never to be forgotten!
You might like the George Jones video, “Who’s Gonna Fill Their Shoes”. It’s touching to those who have followed country music & the stars who are no longer around.
Yes, you got it. Horrible rendition. Listen to studio version. All dressed up to go away. 1st time I'd seen him smile in years( courtesy of the mortician). Soon they'll carry him away...
They, unfortunately, are kinda rare, but if you are, or you know someone like the guy in this song(someone who says what they mean, and means what they say),all the rest of it is 'details'. The first line of the song, and the first line of the chorus are the ENTIRE story: He said I'll love til I die. He stopped loving her today. The end.
I saw the exact moment you realized that the reason he stopped loving her was because he died. Your face told the story and I immediately thought, "Aha! He gets it!". I'm glad you understood the symbolism of the wreath on the door. Thank you, great analysis! George Jones touched so many hearts during his legendary career. Another George you may appreciate is George Strait (another legend, although younger than George Jones). He also has many heartfelt songs that you may like.
I love watching reactions to this song for that very reason! This guy was a little later than most!
His exact words were, “Here! You’ve got your song, but nobody’s gonna buy THAT morbid son of a bitch.” Ended up being his best selling record.
@Maryann Anderson: I always like reading your posts---good job!! 🙂

It has been voted the greatest country song of all time.
You are exactly right! He said “ill love her til I die” and he did. True country, right there my friend! Keep going!! You get it!!!
George is a legend. You need to do his 'Whose gonna fill their shoes'. A deep song to the country music genre.
He stopped loving her today is my favorite song of his but who's gonna fill their shoes is a close second
Yes!
The Grand Tour is quite a tear-jerker too.
I am fortunate enough to have seen him sing this song in person. Tore my heart out.
George was my dad's favorite singer. I didn't appreciate him when I was young but I do now. I like some of his earlier songs which are more upbeat, like White Lightnin' and The Race is On. But he can tear your heart out with songs like this, as well as The Grand Tour and The Door.
React to his Who's Going to Fill Their Shoes please. Thanks. ❤❤❤❤❤
George had stopped drinking finally after years of alcohol abuse and this was his last number one and became his signature song.
yes, ...'who's gonna fill their shoes'...a great TRIBUTE song...you should enjoy it(now that you are familiar with Elvis, Johnny Cash, etc.
Maybe the greatest country song of all time!!
you are one of few reactors who understand this song and that he died. if you get the chance, check out some of George Jones with Tammy Wynette, which was his wife for a brief period. also, another couple of songs by George Jones that are great - The Grand Tour and I Don't Need No Rocking Chair. glad you did this one...thanks
Yes. One of the most beautifully written, tragic songs. For more upbeat by him, the Corvette Song makes my smile every time.
Agreed - The Race is On is a favorite fun one too.
This song brought George's career out of the ashes. This was voted the greatest country song ever written. The great Bobby Braddock wrote this
You got it right away! Most reactors don't get it until they read the comments section after uploading.

He loved her till his last breath. One of my favorite country songs. Beautiful but so very very sad.
Best country song ever written
George had a lot of songs out. I like his song. Who's gonna fill their shoes.
Legendary
Nobody. This is some of the best music ever performed but nobody plays it like this anymore.
58 year career and 130 studio Albums. He had tons of songs out lol
Wonderful reaction! George Jones is an Icon of Country Music! One of my favorites!
He said he'd love her till he died.
And he died.
Quite a sad song.
I think it's both sad and beautiful because I don't think the two have to be mutually exclusive
Old George what amazing singer grew listening to now for 40 year's and still day .
You’re the first reaction I’ve seen that understands the song the first time.
Yes. So many don't get it. Love his voice. Great reaction yet again.
This song still sends chills up & down my spine and I tear up. It came out the year I graduated high school, 1980, forty-two years ago.
Even George Jones said it was the sadest song ever written.
For a real tear jerker, GRAND TOUR is a must. Aaron Neville did a cover of this song and it’s just as touching as George’s version.
Congrats....1 in 50 actually "get it"....And you did...
You did good ! Not all reactors get "it" on the first playthrough.
Another sad song that's far more obvious is Mac Davis - "Whoever Finds This, I Love You"
YES!!!!!!!! someone finally got it. You are the only one to pick up on the "wreath upon his door"...
I've seen quite a few reactions where they never get that he died.
I can understand that in some areas they may not pick up on the meaning of the wreath but they should pick up on "soon they'll carry him away."
Any southerner my age would get it very quickly.
First line of the song is the ENTIRE MEANING OF THE SONG! But so many people miss it until the end of the song.
You are one of the very few who actually listen to the songs. Thank you Bubba. If that generator thingy ever spits out another Brooks & Dunn, I hope it’s Boot scootin’ boogie. You’ll love it.

You need to check out Barbara Mandrell.
Yes you got it right
Check out grand tour by george jones
Believe it or not - the album version is much better!
At start of the song when she walked away she said he would forget her. She came to see him one more time before he died he died that day.
This song has always made me cry! So very touching. I can't imagine having someone love me to that extent. So sad.
If Drinking Don't Kill Me.
Thank you for sharing this with me
This is the greatest country music song ever written. The only reason he stopped is he’s dead. Great story.
❤️ George Jones. Great artist amazing singer. Pure country music!! Yes he died, and they carried him to the cemetery.
Another one for your reaction from George Jones: "The One I Loved Back Then".
Great one!
"He said I'll love her 'til I die."
He tells you in the very first line.
This song will always have a special place in my heart. Not only is it the best country song ever written, but it was my dad's most favorite song of all time, and he could sing it beautifully. Thanks for the reaction.
One of the saddest songs ever

Watch the official video of The Gospel According to Jones..
He definitely looked like Jim in those clips..
I love the reaction to this song. Because eveyone says what the heck you mean he died loving her. Yes, he died loving her the wreath on the door and carried him away. He did die loving her.
You need to do "The Grand Tour"
Played this for my dad's funeral! They divorced when I was less than a year. We took care of him in his final years but he always loved her!
This was my Daddys song. Him and Momma was Married 23 Years then they divorced. He never remarried so when he passed in 2001 He stopped loving her. Such a sad song by the great George Jones. First time I head this, I broke down and cried. great reaction!

So, so many great George Jones songs.
If you love country songs with a story, listen to "Nobody Answers When I Call Your Name" by Vince Gill. Thanks for sharing George's song.
React to Tammy Wynette singing Stand by your Man plz, she was married to George Jones
In this song, about a wife who follows her husband's somewhat unfocused and wild dreams around the country, trying to make their fortune, and not finding their dreams in every place they go, there is one line which references a child, "I had your child in Memphis, then you heard of work in Nashville, we didn't find it there...so we moved on."
"From a small farm in Nebraska.
And still, I won't let you go on alone...."
Although it is not stated directly, because it hurts too much for the couple inside the story to say it out loud, they lost their only child to the bitter cold of Alaska, living rough on the edge, trying to make money out of a gold mine that they'd been sold that turned out to be nothing but a hoax.

George Jones I don't need your rocking chair is an amazing up beat and fun song

That Just About Does It..
Another great song from Johnny Paycheck is Months and 29 Days
Her diing wouldn't gave stopped him loving her in fact could gave made things worse
You’re exactly right my friend.
The end.
