I watched this movie again for the first time in over 15 years. I went through something similar when I was nine years old and had to testify before a grand jury(horrific abuse by a relative )I wasn’t autistic, but I was delayed to where I wasn’t believed. It wasn’t until a doctor found out I was telling the truth getting a check up,and she reported it. I really felt for this child. It’s sad how these monsters take advantage of the child not being able to communicate. I had a very compassionate judge whom I spoke directly to, and I never forgot that! I’m in my 40s now. my heart goes out to all who has suffered through such ugly things!😢
I can really relate to you. I am not delayed but needed support with my learning. At school I was put in with the delayed because I was dyslexic. They didn't pick up on my autism and ADHD until I was an adult. My mum living at home always made me feel delayed, yet at the same time did not support me and I was excluded from being treated equally among my siblings. It was a horrific nightmare living at home always being gaslit by a narcissistic parent in turn siblings also treated me that way. I tried to confide in my mum always getting given the cold shoulder. When I told her once I thought I may be autistic she said 'stop giving yourself things' 😢. And after seeing my psychiatrist who diagnosed me with ADHD she kept trying to normalise me by saying she thought the psychiatrist was wrong... 😢. Yet she abused what I was trying to confide in her with, with my ADHD and autism, telling her I struggle to find my words sometimes... And she did the unthinkable she committed a heinous crime against me 😢... So I relate to this story in so many sad ways. And this now man who plays an autistic boy is a truly gifted actor. ❤

I have an autistic grandson who is 22yrs old now. Treatment for Austism has come along way in the last 20 years!!! He is very smart, loves to swing, great on the computer, can cook certain items. He will never be able to live on his own, but he has made great progress with the help of great teachers!!!! How low can someone get to take advantage of a disabled person!! Thank God for justice!!!! Bradely Pierce was excellent!!!
Great movie!! In the last year I took a job that involves working with autistic adults of varying degrees on the spectrum. Some are non verbal. One has a computer device like the one depicted in this movie. They are incredible people. Capable of much more than folks give them credit for.
its been proven many times through the years that FC is pseudo science, aka snake oil, it is never the client typing, its the facilitator, and yet people still promote it, there is even a movie on the netflix online called tell me you love me, or such with a similar case, that the teacher and updated testing, still proves that its the facilitator, of course the guy in the movie is manipulated by his mother as well, because she just projects whats he likes on to him and does not give him other choices, like in music and such, but, the main focus is the fact that he was not the one who was typing, it was the facilitator.
Being late diagnosed with asd and seeing movies with examples of the levels of asd is a little comforting even though not everyone w asd acts like Michael. Basically thid is a good movie
it's a good movie if I cry once. When I started to see the Michael character's progress, I couldn't stop! So two thumbs and two big toes up for this winner! Patty Duke Astin and Melissa Gilbert are like bread and butter when acting together, each complementing the other. Just great.
yet facilitated communication has zero evidence of being legit and has resulted in multiple false accusations. If a facilitator is in another room when questions are asked... and comes back. Not even the most simple question can be answered correctly. . . The average cost of training someone in facilitated communication is 30k usd per student. . . and the continued research into this pseudoscience is millions of dollars that could be better spent on evidence-based interventions that might actually improve independent communication skills
I am so glad Michael got justice. This is why you should never trust anyone with your children. This was very upsetting for me to watch as a mother of an autistic child. Beautiful sad movie but I’m glad Michael was able to raise his voice. The little actor has wonderful acting skills

Most kids with special needs are, but particularly kids with Downs Syndrome are susceptible to sexual abuse cos of their flair for displays of affection. That need is easily exploited and preyed upon.

Patty Duke and Melissa Gilbert in the same movie. What a treat. Both so talented. Does anyone remember them together in Helen Keller. They were both astounding together then too

he is disabled but he still has the righto some autonomy and to do things away from you and have his own interests and likes. to have different experiences and exposures, that is how he will grow.

I've got a grandson is artistic he can do things on his own and very smart young man as that young man is keep up the good work with him every one will make things better
I have watched Patty Duke in two versions of the story of Helen Keller and Anne Sullivan. First as the young child who couldn’t see, speak or hear. Then as the teacher who taught the child to remember words she spoke as a baby and gave her back her voice. The young child she taught was Melissa Gilbert. I love these two together and both movies are brilliant. I have them both on VCR tapes but all of our VCR machines went home with my special needs granddaughter who partly speaks and partly signs. She loved them all to death. This movie was really good too. I think they must have always cared for each other.
This was based on a true story and it is sad and good at the same time.. It is very sad what children goes through with Normal person sometimes they don't believe and it is more hurtful when a special need's person isn't believed or anything else.. God bless all children of this world we live in and their families and friend's.. Happy New Year to one and all in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord King and Savior..
I was not sure if it happened. I am a Christian woman, raised by Christian parents. Beautifully done movie. I was molested by my brother at age ,9. I was molested by a female classmate; at a Girl Scout outing. Piano lessons. I was molested in our church basement by a brother and sister. Forgot their names. I never told anyone about it until I read the book " The Courage To Heal'. Also " Secret Survivors". I had no words to describe what happened to me in the 1960's. Very long story: my dad was diagnosed with PTSD and on meds. In my day, and being Black; were raised to keep certain subjects in the family. Especially mental illness. Sexual issues would bring shame to our family. Especially with my paternal grandfather, important minister in my mom's city. Raised in the south. Told go to the ministry for help. My dad went to a psychiatric clinic for his meds. Told never to tell outside the family. It took flashback to remember incest. Trusted no man really sexually. I wound up writing in a diary at 13. Any sexual situations I was in. Sex was always a shameful subject in our household. At 66 I look back glad I wrote to express myself since I was a child. It took writing, books. Seeking professional help after a breakdowns. I wasn't safe with my own brother. So it took faith in God to keep living without support for many years. God s Word and leaving sexual abuse can destroy the real image of God. I thank God for bring my Heavenly Father and Jesus as Lord and Savior. Thankful I met many women in church who won't discuss childhood sexual abuse in our church. We talked by phone. Not sure if they told our pastor. Sex is a subject matter that my church struggles to face. Only by faith do so learn trusting in the Lord is the best one to trust Must learn who to trust, teach children about sexual abuse early. Prevention is important. Leaving it can happen in any setting, trusting sick people. Those who take advantage of the vulnerable. God bless the good teachers and people in my life who have helped me heal for years. Still healing with Gods grace and mercy. 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
very well acted out. The roles of people striving for the best for an autistic child. America is growing up. In my grandmother's day, the disabled were sent to institutions. Born in 1955 I have epilepsy. No one acknowledged my disorders in the family, due to the shame of admitting it. Angels from outside of the family saved me from traumas.
29 years ago? I'm terrible at math! I think I was 11 when this came out. I never even heard of Autism. I'm now, shall I say it? Peeking upon 40! I have been working with preschoolers of this population for the past 6 years. Little beastie angels haha If you know, you know haha LOve them!! It's absolutely amazing how far avenues for communication methods, of the way we now teach and even the acceptance! There is still a ways to go, but never give up!! Keep working with the child. The human brain is magnificent and always surprising! Although tough content, I'm grateful to come across this movie.

Despite the disclaimer at the ned... I know in my heart that so many kids who have Autism can be elevated to a place where they can communicate , Patty Duke made such good choices in the movies that she made as an adult. The Miracle Worker started her career but if you know the back story of her own childhood..... she had no control, choice or opinion in her childhood. This film makes it ever so clear that as she came to adulthood she exercised control of what project she undertook and that became the legacy she has left behind.
So true.. Although my children are not autistic i worry about this happening because they are young. I try to ask them questions and let them know what bad touch is and to tell if anything like that happens to tell.. Tell someone..
Patty Duke was amazing in this! I can't believe the technology exists to give these kids a voice if they have the intelligence to grasp the concept. It gave me a new insight into the mind of severely autistic children and what the parents go through in their despair in trying to reach them.

As an Early Intervention Specialist working with the Special needs community here in Nigeria for 10 years now, this hits home... I find the characters very relatable from the Parents individually, to the therapist and finally , to Michael. Sadly, I've had a couple of parents plead that I live with their children while they relocate to other countries. Because they are 'unable to cope' with the children. Two of them where single moms and the kids involved were children on the spectrum. I've found this work emotionally tasking, myself. Touched on so many topics, its just unbelievable! This film brings back stark memories of these past 10 years.
So how many years did that friggin creep get for hurting that boy??!!?!!!!!??? I was molested and raped from an infant still in diapers ( yes babies can remember, and I do in details, but will never speak them) until I was 12 years old. My grandma saved my life, she gave me love and support.. she is greatly missed. I want justice for ALL CHILDREN!!! It's not far that my abuser was my uncle from age 6-12 and he's still alive! And still walks free .!!! I told my aunt about him when I was an adult ... She believed me. I should have said something when I was a kid, but didn't think anyone would believe me. I'm not sure if my aunt told my grandma, I think that would have broken my grandma's heart. She trusted my aunt and uncle to take care of me Sunday - Friday afternoon, she worked and didn't want a stranger to babysit me. Family.... Right?😟😣 I'm now 60 years old and have been dealing with this all my life, I'm so proud if that boy"Michael" for having a voice and using it. He was a very BRAVE boy. Blessings and prayers to everyone ✨🙏🕊️🙏✨
yeah i was trying to look up info about this and laws vary state to state but i saw it say only a year of jail time if something like this is done to a 14-15 yr old
Despite this being a movie, there's so much that goes undiagnosed every day because people limit research and dismiss certain facts which are common for misdiagnoses as well. I know from my experience that I was definitely misdiagnosed in my childhood.
This is definitely a sad and good movie. I cried and it's sad that he couldn't talk but thanks to his teacher he was able to tell what happen to him and got justice. It's a shame how certain people try to knock the boy down and his teacher and Jeff lawyer even tried to manipulate the juries to thinking that the boy wasn't speaking for his self but the teacher talking for him but that wasn't the case they saw for themselves that he was able to speak for self and he's going to continue to get help so maybe one day he will able to speak who knows but it was a great movie and I wonder how he doing today. Most live💯🥰👏👏👏 Love & Light 💜
My little sister is autistic, she's 18 years old and can speak but I'm scared of a sick creep hurting her, j try my best to protect her. I feel bad for all the kids, autistic or not who get abused by sick and disgusting monsters 💔😢
why they so easily trust young men seeking to work with children who have problems?they should be checked and tested a lot and been supervised ,this sort of abuse is too often
Because I’m the US a child’s value is less as they cannot contribute to society. I believe anyone who can hurt a child should get life. No second chances do hurt another child again.
No matter how much times I watch this movie am going to cry I will never understand how can a person moles a child how can you enjoy yourself while their hurting and not understanding why 😭😭😭

I only know from personal experience in my own childhood what was happening to Michael and what Jeff did to him because of the signs and the behavior that he was exhibiting when he was with Jeff who was touching on him and Michael didn’t want to be touched by him and than immediately leaving his sight when the social worker left. As an adult survivor I am in recovery and work as a Mental Health Peer Specialist and some of my clients are sometimes children who share similar lived experiences and stories of what happened to me in my own childhood and I am striving to continue to be an advocate and help people and children the best way that I can ❤
A must watch movie that moved one to tears of the trauma an autistic ,child or for that matter any child could go through due to being mishandled or abused The shame and guilt of being unable to speak the truth of their trauma and pain effects them psychologically and mars their life forever In this case Michael had an inner intelligence to communicate which is not understood by many .and so are many like him .The victim's extraordinary talent was unique that helped in winning the case . A lesson for parents and teaching faculty to be aware in educating their children what is good and bad .ln the present day many little babies are at the mercy of such predators . Wolves in sheep's clothing . Please God save our children from such evil.. Whoever uploaded this is a blest person.
I looked after a little girl at a special school and she had drowned and had been in the water for more than 5 minute and she never spoke. I spent heaps of time with her and finally she made her 1st sound more of a scream and I was so happy for her. But they whisked her away and I left and I have always wondered what happened with Annie.
This made me cry because their are so many children going true this and does not know who to tell or who to confide in and this is why we need to pay more attention to our kids
I thought it was strange that he was living alone with a strange man and had one-on-one lessons with Terry. Who was paying for this? Did every child at the school live in an “apartment” alone with a adult and have private lessons?? I would NEVER let my child live alone with a stranger, school or not! There are day schools for autistic and handicapped children.
Well look what happened in the residential schools with nuns for the poor native girls...or what happened in the boys orphanage in Newfoundland with catholic brothers, which were kind of like priests...this happens everywhere, unfortunately...but not everyone is like them...
What a very touching and hopeful movie!! I've always loved patty Duke and Melissa gilbert! And I must say the little boy did an amazing job!!! I also.loved h on "Indian in the Cupboard" 😊😊

My son is 25-year-old is low functioning, autism, thank you for making this movie years before he was ever born!
its been proven many times through the years that FC is pseudo science, aka snake oil, it is never the client typing, its the facilitator, and yet people still promote it, there is even a movie on the netflix online called tell me you love me, or such with a similar case, that the teacher and updated testing, still proves that its the facilitator, of course the guy in the movie is manipulated by his mother as well, because she just projects whats he likes on to him and does not give him other choices, like in music and such, but, the main focus is the fact that he was not the one who was typing, it was the facilitator.
But they knew nothing about autism back then
Being late diagnosed with asd and seeing movies with examples of the levels of asd is a little comforting even though not everyone w asd acts like Michael.

Just great.
I'm so glad Michael got the justice he deserves and finally had a voice to communicate with people he trusted.
yet facilitated communication has zero evidence of being legit and has resulted in multiple false accusations.

Very touching. Am in tears. I just imagine that anyone can sexually abuse a helpless voiceless child or adult!!!! It's very cruel & heinous!!! 😭😭😭😭
Most kids with special needs are, but particularly kids with Downs Syndrome are susceptible to sexual abuse cos of their flair for displays of affection. That need is easily exploited and preyed upon.

Unfortunately bad people without empathy specially take advantage of the most innocent and vulnerable.

Patty Duke and Melissa Gilbert in the same movie. What a treat. Both so talented. Does anyone remember them together in Helen Keller. They were both astounding together then too

Where is God when innocent little children are abused??
As soon as “jeff” sees “Michael” come in the courtroom, he knows he’s “done for.”

29 years ago? I'm terrible at math! I think I was 11 when this came out. I never even heard of Autism. I'm now, shall I say it? Peeking upon 40!

A terrible subject but portrayed beautifully. Thank you for helping him find his voice then listening to him.
This is the scary thing for all us mothers with autistic children who are non verbal. Scary. Mothers do know best.😪

But there are also very big challenges when they’re adults …

That's really amazing
Family.... Right?😟😣
I'm now 60 years old and have been dealing with this all my life, I'm so proud if that boy"Michael" for having a voice and using it. He was a very BRAVE boy.

yeah i was trying to look up info about this and laws vary state to state but i saw it say only a year of jail time if something like this is done to a 14-15 yr old
I enjoyed watching the movie. What a great teacher Micheal has and loving parents
It's TERRIFYING how often all types of abuse occur with vulnerable people!😡
Some people r just SICK!
why they so easily trust young men seeking to work with children who have problems?they should be checked and tested a lot and been supervised ,this sort of abuse is too often
In America drug users go in prison longer than child abusers . Sometimes justice system sucks . This is one of the reasons child abusing never stop
Because I’m the US a child’s value is less as they cannot contribute to society. I believe anyone who can hurt a child should get life. No second chances do hurt another child again.
wife and girlfriend abusers too are laughed off by the mostly male cops
Great story line there should be more shows dealing with options for kids with special needs

A must watch movie that moved one to tears of the trauma an autistic ,child or for that matter any child could go through due to being mishandled or abused The shame and guilt of being unable to speak the truth of their trauma and pain effects them psychologically and mars their life forever
In this case Michael had an inner intelligence to communicate which is not understood by many .and so are many like him .The victim's extraordinary talent was unique that helped in winning the case .
