just orderd one of these. i hope it will do the job pulling a 105. cheap as. how come you dont show how to tension it when putting it back in?

correct the cable needs to be wound in with about 100kg of tension so that any pull on the wraps does not dig into the layers below.

So the first layer of rope doesnt require tension? Under the impression if i pre tension the first layer wont it rip the rope straight off the drum? Any advice would be greatly appreciated as finding accurate information for respooling seems to be hard to find, cheers

Just noticed nobody answered your question, you need about 5-8 turns on the drum before you load it up (don't need the full first layer), and any time you take it off to clean it like in the vid, you should pre-tension it again (surprised he didn't mention that).

Hey mate hopefully you find this comment. Where did your winch cradle plate come from for the factory Toyota 70 series bar? I have some car and winch and unfortunately don’t have the heavy duty plate

As a rule of thumb, 1.5x the weight of your vehicle. So, on say, a patrol, they weight about 2.5t (factory weight), or 5500lbs. Bare minimum to look for would then be 8500lbs, but you'd be really pushing it. Safer rule is about double. So a 3 ton vehicle (6600lbs) should get a 12k winch as a safe estimate.

never mount a winch to a bullbar. if you do, upgrade the mount bolts to grade 10.9 or higher. The bolts can break, and the bullbar can become a projectile.

The winch was bolted to the Toyota winch cradle which was bolted to the chassis brackets, the bull bar bolts to the same brackets

@@ilove2explore we run the same bullbars at work and they don't bolt to the chassis at all, they bolt to a mounting frame on the underside of the bar. They tear the mounts quite often, I'm always repairing them, never seen any manufacturer in the 20 years I've been a mechanic mount them to chassis rails, as I believe they aren't actually allowed to make them like that, due to prevention of the crush zones the vehicles are made with, from working properly.
