Next time you are bogged in the sand like you showed on the beach if you have a bucket get water from the ocean pore it on your tyre tracks and walk along them to compact them don’t forget the sand next to your tyres it doesn’t take much water then just drive out .simple. You don’t need to let your tyres down and you will not need to be pulled out. All you need is access to water . Once you have compacted the tyre tracks you don’t need 4d4 so long as you don’t spin your tyres it doesn’t matter how dry or deep the sand you don’t need as much water as you thing then just walk up and down your tracks . Try it
Traction boards are also a good item to have on the sand. I bought a pair and just two days later I was using them to help a young family that was stuck, worked great!
Another valuable tip is when going down a steep dune trying to go slow and your truck starts to get sideways do to limiting your speed is to give it some gas scary or not and your truck will get straight. Fighting it getting sideways limiting your speed will get worse and you will roll your truck in the sand sideways on the steep sand. To make it up dunes you need to start up the dune with speed and floor it. With lockers your tires aired down some and a good engine that pushes you into the seat hitting the gas you might make it. When you are reaching the top do not let off the gas peddle or you will almost make it or high center on a sharp peak. Keeping some speed up and not stopping where you are not facing a downward direction is the best. Starting from a stop on a uphill direction is rolling the dice. Don't go for any steeper stuff until you know what your truck can do and get some experience. Sand can surprise you quick and harshly.
Killer video man, thank you for making this! Wife and I just got our first 4WD beach vehicle and we plan to take it all over the coast to surf spots. Already knew some of the basics, but this video really helped fill in the gaps of knowledge needed to safely drive on the beach. Thanks legend! 🤙🏽
Just had my first bad sand experience today. Was not prepared at all. Thankfully some good samaritans helped me out big time. Definitely coming prepared next time thanks to their tips and this video.
Hi Brenno looks like you and 4WD Supercentre should get it own TV show. would be like the old days when the shows used to teach people good stuff, after over 50 years of 4WDing I like to help young ones onto the right path and you are doing a good job here mate. I have had all number of 4WD vehicles over the years all the good ones, I am now 75 and have downsize to a 2012 Nissan X Trail 4WD it is a great little vehicle, not many sensible places it won't go, have set up a dual battery behind drivers seat all with Super Centre gear, and we are back into camping. I have never been a fan of letting tires down to much and have never been bogged due to sensible driving and looking before you commit no matter what the track. Everything you said was great info for young beginners and all those rich people with LANDROVER and Autobahn tires who think they can do Fraser :-) Just one really good tip you missed was keep your thumbs out on the rim of the wheel when driving avoids possible breakages to them. Also if your bogged at the back wheels and have no diff lock a small amount of handbrake will get you out most times even two wheel drive ute on a muddy building site Old bloke over and out.
Its all a myth, full tyre psi, red lining throttle, sideways down the dunes just like a surfer shooting the curl. Guaranteed to produce a memorable 4x4 adventure.
things i have learnt from doing remote beaches is burring a wheel in the sand will make a winch point and if you winch dies, you can taking turns over your wheel with a snatch/tow rope will work too
Great vid! All beginners should watch this, it was very well presented. I've seen my fair share of mistakes out there including not locking the centre diff (overheated). I wish it was around when I owned my MK SWB SD33T Patrol (in late 90s). Well done.
Amazing video mate. I’m getting ready to do some beach camping and I don’t have a lot of sand driving experience under my belt. This is gonna help a bunch.
Thank you so much. I've always wanted to drive on my local beach, but never had a vehicle to do so. Now that I do, this is a big help as a starter. I'm still going to be going with someone who is much more experienced first, but this was such a big help. Thank you again!
Crazy how much the sand changes location to location or even season to season. I live in the north west USA and used to do beach recoveries for fun in a stock silverado. It was easy, 4hi and dont think we had a front locker. No digging or anything just hook up and pull. It was hard to even get that truck to bog down in 2wd. Drove my lowered open diff rwd bmw out a few times and only got stuck once, got out without help. Driver was the difference, my buddies in awd SUVs needed help.
Great info video. The only thing that I would add is, for very low power vehicles like my 86 kw io pajero, 4wd low range is always a must in power sucking soft sand and always select a low gear and keep it in the torque band
Excellent video, very helpful, however -You didn’t mention airing right down to 5 psi when bogged in sand and after digging drive out real slow but then as soon as possible air back up to 15 psi or more depending on your vehicle’s weight. I guess you cover it in your video on tyre pressures but it should have had a mention here because if you’re on your own it’s your last option before a long walk for help only to return to your vehicle surrounded by water as the tide has come in! Also, if going it alone you really want sand tracks of some sort in your kit.
Thanks for the vid mate I got savagely bogged on the beach first weekend of having my 4x4 with a rising tide very lucky someone came along and I have a winch but I have to get back on the horse and I’ll go get the snatch strap 👍
Great vid, my first time out as a kid in my new 1989 wrangler,i sunk right down, didnt know i was suppose to deflate! Than ,on the beach in a suzuki SJ-410 so lite i didnt have to deflate. Im gonna assume that the pass on the left is a UK thing, here in thr states ,we keep to thr right.Great vid
4hi doesn't work for every single 4x4 as not all 4bes have the same gearing ratios or tyre sizes, power etc these all make a difference. In low powered 4x4s low range works so much better
Another rule to follow when in groups, leave plenty of space between vehicles, dont sit up each others arse. If the front vehicle has to stop and you're close you have no room to move and the track gets chewed, space out you vehicles and let the front vehicle go through the obstical first.
The vehicle pulling you should be offset to either side to give you a little added safety. The strap will thank you! Doing a straight pull is hard on your strap!
I park at beach access roads in Texas. Put out a surf rod and wait for rich folks to get stuck. I pull them out and never ask for anything in return. 9 times out of ten they'll want to give you something....... My favorites are the Cadillac Escalades' and the huge desil 4x4's. It's a GREAT way to spend the day. I love tha Salt Life.........
The best piece of advice here is confidence in the man's voice... what's the worst thing that could happen ! wait for hours before someone more knowledgeable shows up. No shame in bogging. Shame in not trying enough for the fear of bogging. !
Nice one mate. Thank for taking the time out for this. Good point about rated recovery points. I've been using the hook under my 4x4 bumper for recovery
I did that. It turned out it was some wheel rod that looked like a hook. I’m glad it wasn’t my car and the guy wasn’t around. He wasn’t stuck either. I just wanted to pull something. The car didn’t move but that rod came off.
Awesome video, what beach is this on and what state? I know some beaches north and south of Perth it's risky driving close to the water as it's just way to soft
I learnt to park at the high tide line And never drive on a beach 60km walk back to town overnight after snapping an axle .. taught me that I have more endurance than my dog did, I rescued the vehicle Camping is fun ...beach driving isnt camping
Often wondered about leaving the gearbox in drive vs manually selecting the gear, which is better for the longevity of the transmission when travelling on soft sand?
I can only speak for my old 4 gear automatic Prado. I NEVER drive on the beach in 'D'. Always in 2nd, with just occasionally knocking it into 3rd at dead low tide and the beach wide and flat like a motorway. There is absolutely nothing wrong with manually selecting an appropriate gear in an automatic gearbox and just leaving it there. It's exactly why the function is there, to be used.
Great vid, thanks I do have a question about snorkels do you rate them for beach driving I notice you are not using one in your vid? I am not sure if I need one if I have know intention of getting my car in that deep water but I do want to get down the beach every Chang. I get

Don't forget your Truck Claws that you can put on your tires and it'll practically get you out of everywhere. Good stuff thanks for posting. I'm in Arizona and we do have sand dirt and rocks here LOL Merry Christmas to all and to all a good-night
Biggest tip in sand is dont go down a big hill.. especially if no other way of getting back up..and seaweed that you can’t see under a sand drift will get you bogged worse than soft sand
U forgot something that’s why u stuck more in sand. When u stuck in sand just remove sands from around all the tires and turn to low4x4 vdc off then then don’t rush the acceleration just 1000/rmp if ur going up then ur reverse gear or if u going down use forward gear just give a small pressure on acceleration and turn the staring fully to right left slow by slow in just two minutes u will be out. Try it n let me know
Good stuff, two things I would like to add. After you've stopped in sand, back up about a meter. This gives you packed track in front of your vehicle to get started again. My second point is doing a snatch recovery using only one strap, make sure the vehicle being recovered is in a lower gear than the tow vehicle. Can save a lot of damage with inexperienced people. O and one more thing don't do snatch recovery driving backwards. (Look out cv joints).
