      They have TINY blaters as puppies and can't hold it so as soon as they wake up make sure you run them out IMMEDIATELY otherwise if sitting with you they probably will pee in chair couch or on you had that happen few times and really sucks and every half hour take them out yhey pee non stop good luck!!

    I'm currently doing something similar with my new Chihuahua currently. First, I purchased a 24 by 18 dog crate that I then threw a dog bed, dog toys, and a dog blanket on the inside.
    I also purchased a 24 by 18 high sided solid plastic container that using a hack saw, I cut out an opening large enough for a chihuahua to ingress and egress on one side of it easily. Then I filled the bottom of this new customized doggy litter box with one inch of pine pellets. Next, I butted the customized doggy litter box to the door opening of the doggy crate.
    Lastly I put the puppy inside. As the idea is the puppy sleeps and plays on the crate side without soiling it and then when it eliminates it goes in the customized doggy litter box side.
    Meanwhile, I only let the puppy out for bonding after it has recently eliminated itself. So for in five days, everything seems to be working like a charm.
    The plan is to continue the process for approximately three weeks, then when I deem it is time, I will slide the customized doggy liter box about a foot away from the doggy crate, which, of course, will give the puppy the ability to ingress and egress the doggy crate at will.
    Meanwhile, I will monitor the puppy closely throughout the day and if the puppy returns 100 percent of the time to the customized doggy litter box to eliminate, I will move the litter box further away from the doggy crate in the direction of my desired permanent location.
    Each day the puppy is flawless in eliminating in the customized doggy litter box, I will continue moving it closer and closer to my desired permanent location, and when I finally reach my permanent location with flawless elimination inside the customized doggy litter box, then I will consider my puppy completely litter box trained.
    However, if the puppy does make a mistake during the process of moving the customized doggy litter box to its permanent location, then I will butt up the customized litter box to the doggy crate and continue the routine for one more week before attempting the process again.
    Meanwhile, pine pellets are dirt cheap. As I bought a 40 pound bag of the stuff at Tractor Supply Company for $7.50 including tax and that amount should last me about six months.
    Pine Pellets also virtually eliminates all odors and it is very easy to work with. As when puppies, dogs, or cats urinate on them, the pellets disintegrate into sawdust.
    The way I'm doing it, is anytime I see dog poop in the customized doggy litter box, I scoop it out immediately with a litter box scoop and flush it down the toilet.
    I also bought a cheap sifting cat litter box that I use only as a cleaning aid.
    So what I will do to clean out the customized doggy litter box is after I make sure there is no remaining poo, I will then empty the contents of the customized litter box into the cat litter box sifter. Then after returning the customized doggy liter box to its permanent location, I will sift out all the sawdust to the bottom cat litter box.
    When all that remains in the sifter is unused pine pellets, I will empty the sifter contents back inside the customized doggy liter box and then dump the sawdust in the bottom cat litter box into the trash, as it is odorless. Then I will replenish the customized doggy litter box with one or two scoops of pine pellets to replenish the customized doggy litter box.
    After that, I'm finished; it's cleaned. So all told the process start to finish will take me about two to three minutes a week.
    Meanwhile, the advantage of litter training your chihuahua is that you don't have to worry about making a time schedule to take your dog outside. You won't have to worry about rain or snow or if it is hot or cold outside.
    The chihuahua always stays inside the home, so it's never exposed to fleas and ticks.
    Moreover, you can also leave the chihuahua alone for extended periods of time and not have to worry about puppy mistakes. All in all, I think it works over all better than having to take your dog out on a leash everyday for multiple times a day or if you have a fenced in back yard, having to let your dog out the door every day for multiple times a day.
    So far, everything is going according to plan without even the first puppy mishap yet.

    • @bullfrog5037
      @bullfrog5037 Рік тому

      @@BowChika00 When I was still potty training her, that's what I did. I put the food bowl on one side near the door and the water bowl on the other side near the door. That way, I could easily reach them to replenish them
      As I have a 24 x 18 wire doggy crate and she loves her doggy crate.

    I just took my puppy chihuahua outside every hour. Every week I would decrease outside time until she would be at the door on her own to let me know she wanted to go potty. She never peed or pooed inside and it took less than a month to trained her, she was 4 months old. Now she associates outside with potty and playtime.

    I have to be honest here… when I clicked on this video I didn’t expect much, not because anything personal just because the tips on YT mainly have been about outside potty training and people with large gardens and houses or just using plain pads, which my Chi destroys. BUT I HAVE NEVER BEEN SO GRATEFUL for this video. This might have changed me and my doggies life forever. I got so anxious trying to potty train him. But this has worked miracles. I’m working on this method right now. So far so good! I’ve actually been a little amazed. My babies are only 7 weeks old and everyone told me I would have no luck so early. If I’m diligent and stay on it they do perfectly. We have a few accidents if they are playing away from the crates. I try to watch and get them to the potty crate while they are out...and now I leave the potty crate OFF while they play (so they can get to it...but I replace it if I can’t watch them constantly and need to put them in containment).
    They will totally stop playing and go to the pad now
    :) I’ve literally only had them a week!
    I watched this video and found you the day after I brought them home :) thank you so much. You have been such a big help.

    I took in a shichi. A chihuahua and shiztu mix breed. Previous owner would just yell at her and kept her in her crate all day everyday except for when she would let her outside or take her a bath. And occasionally come out to play when grandkids would go over. But when I got her she was well behaved and knows how to alert me when it's time to go outside. Pretty much the only time she will bark is if she has to go and I'm asleep. If I'm awake, she'll make me follow her to the door. Point is apparently keeping her in her crate taught her not to potty inside. Although I do not like for dogs to be in cages all day witch is why I agreed to take her in.

    I would love to have one of these little fur babies. I had my Chihuahua house broke Within 2 weeks. Like you said you don't scold them by having an accident. I got some of this stuff that comes like squirt cheese but it's made for puppies and that is what I used as a treat when she'd go potty. Plus every time she would go potty I would say that word I would praise her

    What do you do when your chihuahuas are at least a year old, and go outside when we walk them, and sometimes will go to the door to go out- but quite often won’t. Instead they find a carpet in a remote area of the house and go there? It’s driving us crazy. We take them out regularly, but they’ll come back in a go on the area rug. We have four chihuahuas, aged 10, 3, 2 and 1. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    • @SweetiePiePets
      @SweetiePiePets  5 років тому +2

      Phan Nguyen I made a video about the intelligence of chihuahuas and unfortunately they don’t rank too high. I definitely do not recommend hitting him because right now the goal is to teach him to trust you as his top pack member. I also don’t recommend putting his nose in it because they often don’t know what that means. I would try the crate method with him. Let the other dog roam freely around the house but your little guy needs to be restricted until he leans where he’s allowed to go.

    • @SweetiePiePets
      @SweetiePiePets  5 років тому +5

      tee dee they have to be confined to a smaller area until they learn where to go. If they have full roam of the house, they will just go wherever they feel like and pick up bad habits. Start early and confine them to their pee pad area and a den crate and only enlarge their roaming area very very slowly as they prove capable of making it to the pee pad. Any time they make a mistake, reduce the size if their roaming area again until they always make it to the pad. Don’t Let them roam freely around the house until they always make it to the pad 100% of the time.

    Our chihuahua puppy was somewhat quick to house break, but the first 3 weeks was constant taking him out, especially after eating or waking from sleep, had to get him out fast! Now he won't go in the house no matter what! The problem is the marking, that's been our biggest problem. We rescued a chiweenie puppy same age as the chihuahua and the chiweenie has been tougher to house break!

      Jeff k hey there, thanks so much for sharing about your sweetie pies. The marking can definitely be an issue. Did you get both your boys fixed before puberty? I’ve discovered that generally prevents them from getting into the marking habit. But it’s not 100% because those instincts are hard to overcome. Even my girls make their territory sometimes 😖

    My baby doll is house trained but in winter especially with snow she refuses to do anything outside . She will just sit there and shiver until you bring her back in . But the second your not watching her you will find a wet spot and a soft pretzel by the door. I think we need to go south !

    Question… I just adopted a 6 month old boy, great idea but, I live in an apartment and he hates to be in his crate? He screams and cry’s the neighbors can hear him all the way out side?
    Now what??

    • @SweetiePiePets
      @SweetiePiePets  Рік тому

      The crying is a normal part of his adjustment. Keep in mind it won’t last forever. With consistency and reassurance, he should adjust within just a week or two. Maintain a very strict schedule with him always having his out of crate playtimes at the same times every day. He needs to come out of the crate and have exercise/playtime for at least 3 hours a day. He also should have scheduled cuddle time for another 2 to 3 hours a day. Chihuahuas sleep for 18 hours a day but of course it needs to be broken up into consistent blocks of time. If you keep him on that regimented schedule, he will know what to expect, and will stop being so upset when it’s time to go into his crate. I would make his meal be in the crate, so he associates his crate with good things. Keep in mind he will likely need to go potty right after eating, so create your schedule accordingly.

    if the weather is really warm. if you have cold drafts please cover the bed area with a heavy, thick comforter. have one inside the crate as well so they can burrow. chihuahuas are very sensitive and get cold quickly. i put my trained dog (doxle) in with my new chihuahua inside the crate. the older dog taught the younger where to go potty. they need training 24/7/ my chi was still hardheaded and peed on the kids bed because they left the door open. it took 3 years to get her to realize and lots of outdoor activity. get the chi to empty her bladder outside as much as you can. leave a puppy pad by the back door just in case. it draws them to that spot and can be cleaned easier than yr expensive furniture. last of all, cover your furniture with heavy blanket comforters. the claws of digging and peeing can be minimalized if you protect the couch. i have worn out a few blankets. good luck with yr new puppy!

    • @OzarkRose
      @OzarkRose 2 роки тому

      That would depend on whether it’s a double coat, or a single coat. If it is a double coat, don’t. The dog has its own built-in cooling system because of the way that it’s hair works, and the coat will be really badly damaged and will not grow back the same if you cut it. However, if it’s a single coat long hair, then you can safely give it a summer haircut, and it will not affect how the coat grows back in the fall.
      If you have a long-haired Chihuahua, and you want to know whether or not to go ahead and give it a summer haircut, I would recommend having a groomer determine if your dog is single or double coated.

      One of my viewers who was having similar issues said, “it’s a good thing they’re cute” 😂 Hard to stay mad at them for too long.
      Chihuahuas can be very stubborn though so just be prepared for a long kitchen confinement and try to keep them in their den/potty crate consistently except when you’re RIGHT there interacting with them. Even then I recommend to block the kitchen so they can’t run around the corner when you’re not looking.
      Good luck to you and your sweetie pies! 🤗 and let me know how it goes.

    Good video and helpful info. However, it is my understanding that just as dogs don't like to go to the bathroom on their beds they also don't like to eat in the same location as where they go to the bathroom. Your video shows you putting food and water onto the potty mat which seems incorrect and possibly unhygienic. Also, some dogs especially male, non fixed ones, will pee on their beds to mark territory and assert dominance.

    • @SweetiePiePets
      @SweetiePiePets  6 років тому +6

      Shannon Jamieson thanks for your input. 👍🏻 you can definitely put the food and water on their den/bed side if you prefer. Though I’ve never had an issue with my chi not wanting to eat or drink from the bowls on the potty crate side. Regarding hygiene, the pee pads need to be changed out often so they aren’t walking on top of their pee. When they poo, it’s the size of a tootsie roll so I usually just pick it up with a paper towel. The pads I use are large enough that for a tiny chihuahua, they have plenty of room to avoid their mess by waking around it. But I like to change it often so it stays nice and clean in their crate.

    • @SweetiePiePets
      @SweetiePiePets  6 років тому

      Lucy Navarro oh no! Sorry to hear about your the struggles. I’ve heard of some people litter box training their chihuahuas! But I’ve never tried it so I don’t know if it’s any easier than pad training. But I do know that if they have too much space to roam it’s often confusing to them to atry and make it back to one specific spot to go potty. It’s less confusing when they’re in a smaller area and can easily find their potty spot. it’s easier for them to find their potty spot if they’re in a smaller area temporarily until he she learns where the bathroom is. If I didn’t have crates I would probably try just using a small room (maybe kitchen or bathroom - temporarily block her in so she can’t escape) and keep her in there with the pad or a litter box or whatever you want to train her on. If you have a kitchen area or bathroom area that has tile floor that would be easiest to clean up if she makes a mistake.

    • @miawallace7697
      @miawallace7697 6 років тому

      Lucy Navarro so if you can’t put the dog outside do you at least walk it? If you were to walk your dog 30mins after feeding it and not go back inside until it goes then it will become accustomed to going outside over time. The thing is that you have to commit to walking it at least three times a day or if you let it outside then why don’t you just supervise it and not leave it alone out there? Honestly not to be rude but it’s pretty lazy to want to train the dog to go inside and that you’re not willing to watch it when you put it outside, you should be walking and exercising it regularly anyway.

    • @SweetiePiePets
      @SweetiePiePets  6 років тому +8

      @@miawallace7697 I don't mean to discredit you, Marla but your dog training background must not be with Chihuahuas. Mine poop about 5 times a day and I don't know many people who have time to go on that many walks. I'm sure there are some Chis who are in fact trained to go just outside. But I like to pee pad train mine and there are many other people who do as well. I would appreciate you to stop calling people lazy simply because they want to keep their Chihuahuas inside where they are safe. Last warning before I block you from my channel. This forum exists to be supportive, not so that Marla Singer can be the Chihuahua police to the entire world.

      @The_Salty_Siren 4 роки тому +1

      Yes you can, I saw where she replied on another comment that you can use one big crate & to put food & water on opposite end of where you put their bed. I just got a puppy & idk if he is just a randomly smart chihuahua or likes to sleep everywhere bc he’s already fully puppy pad trained & knows how to sit, beg & give me a 5 on command with treats & he will be 10 weeks this week. I couldn’t bear to do her method after he’s already been trained bc it hurts my whole heart when he whines. I’ve let him be free since day one & it took about 2 full weeks to puppy pad train. I basically followed him (rather he follows me lol) & would reward him with praise & treats) I just made sure to put at least one pad in each room he can go in. It works! Now, to start removing the pads one by one & get him on take out potty schedule.

  • @onefeather2

    I have two chihuahua's and have never used a crate, i trained them with just puppy pads, when I started the training I gave them very small treat did not take long for them to learn, mine are never in a crate, dogs are not to be crated, that is not natural and they learn to go on the puppy pad so if you take them anywhere they do not have a problem.

    • @SweetiePiePets
      @SweetiePiePets  6 років тому +5

      Thanks for your input. I'm glad your Chis are happy. Mine are happy too even when they're safe in their crate which they view as their den. Some people refuse to crate or kennel-train their dogs because they feel the confinement is cruel. However most dog trainers understand the psychology behind crate training and know that a crate or kennel can give dogs a sense of security. This tendency to view the crate as a clean place is a huge benefit house training a new rescue dog or puppy, of course! After years and years working with Chihuahuas, I have found crate training to be the easiest, most effective technique with the least amount of stress on the dog. As long as they get plenty of social and play time outside of the crate, a dog generally views their crate is their den. That being said, I do appreciate feedback so thank you much. 😊

      Hello Roger, thank you so much for your comment. I loved reading about Tuffy living in your RV with you. I’m fascinated with van life and have often thought chihuahuas are the perfect companion for this lifestyle since they don’t require a lot of room. We take our chihuahuas camping in our little trailer and I’ve recently been working on ideas for a better potty system for them. I would never send them out on their own to go potty since there are often coyotes and large birds of prey. I’d love to know more about your cupboard potty system 🙏🏻❤️

    We have a hard situation, and I'd prefer no backlash please.
    Do you have a method for a 1 year old chihuahua who has never been consistent with going outside? We got her at 8 weeks and it's been a bit of a nightmare with her... We thought she'd just grow out of it, but it kept getting worse, no matter what I did. crate training, managing food, taking out every 2 hours... long walks. Our bedroom floor has been totally ruined too.
    Take into note:
    We are in the midwest and it's often more cold than not, which really affected her going outside. If it's breezy, windy, raining, or snowing, even with her clothing on, she will refuse to go. I will still make her go out, but the chances of her doing anything is slim to none.
    During normal spring/summer days, she will get put outside (every 2 hours), we have even knocked it down to every 1 hour, she goes to the bathroom outside maybe 2 out of 10.. Now i know, taking her out every 2 hours as an adult, she may not need to go that often but I just mean in general she will maybe go in the morning, and then despite taking her out multiple times through the day, still goes in the house. When we put her outside more often than not she will stand 30 minutes, doing nothing. We do have the go potty command, and we did the treats after potty as well.
    She does do territorial peeing a lot, peeing on bed and furniture. Not just my bed either, which she does not sleep in. She pees on our couch, and she's peed on others furniture while we visited. I have no idea how to prevent this either.
    She used to be crated at night and anytime we left, but since she's older, we felt like the crate was doing more harm than good since we have left the house more lately than we are home.
    I have no idea how to go about fixing this, and if it's even possible since her potty scent is basically everywhere now.
    I thought about a litterbox, but, we have cats... and I'm almost certain the cats would try to use the box and she will eat the cat poo.
    I also wanted to add, she has seen a vet, and doesn't have anything medical going on, when it comes to the urination. It's also pooping too, she pees and poops inside, basically everywhere. It's not just one spot, wherever she's at, in that current time.

      Hello, thanks for leaving your comment. It sounds like you have a very frustrating situation. Chihuahuas are extremely stubborn so it’s going to take a lot of effort to work through this problem.
      Chihuahuas are warm weather dogs so they absolutely DO NOT like going out in the cold. That’s why I train mine to use a potty pad and I think in your case, you might have the best chance of success by allowing her to go potty inside.
      And so I recommend to put her into a crate set up with an attached potty crate on top of a potty pad.
      For a while (many months, maybe even up to a year) she will need to stay in the crate 100% of the time, except for while you or a family member are interacting with her. Obviously, the interactions need to be often because no dog should be in a crate all of the time. But keep in mind that Chihuahua sleep for up to 18 hours a day. So it’s perfectly fine for her to be in a crate for up to 18 hours a day. Make sure she has a soft bed, plenty of toys and water available at all times and then schedule your day so that she gets at least six hours out of the crate. But all 6 of those hours need to be spent with a human, keeping a close eye on her.. in fact, I recommend to keep her on a leash while you are walking around in the house with her. They are quick, and sometimes when you look away for just a second they run over and pee on something so keeping her on a leash, right with you at all times means she will not be able to sneak off and piddle.
      If you have a safe spot for her to go outside, you can leave her out there without human interaction for some of those six hours. But just know that while she is in the house, she is absolutely not allowed to walk around freely. It’s going to take a very long time to break up this bad habit, especially since the smell is all over the house now. Use Nature’s Miracle Urine (available on my Amazon store www.amazon.com/shop/sweetiepiepets) all over the house, including on any carpet or furniture she has peed on.
      I also recommend to get her spayed as soon as possible to cut down on her marking urges.
      Those are my recommendations, but just know it will take a lot of consistency on your part to break her of those bad habits. She can do it, you can do it, just be patient and consistent.
      Best of luck to you and to her ❤️

    Am currently waiting for a rescue chi puppy to be born. Have my pick of a male or female or both. I would like to know which is easier to potty train and if it's a good idea to get 2 at one time. I am just a person who believes in saving dogs so that's why I would even consider rescuing 2. Also, at what age can I get them spayed /neutered as I believe in being a responsible pet owner. It's been 4 yrs. since I lost my 18/yo little doxie and I think I am ready after 30 yrs of doxies to try another breed.

      Hello Harley, thank you so much for offering a loving home for rescues. That is very admirable. I wish you the best of luck. So regarding potty training, as long as you start early on the training (I start at 4 weeks -- but they're still nursing at that time so if you don't have the mamma, you won't be able to start until older). There are pros and cons of getting 2 at once. Pros are, they get lonely when they're alone. If you work outside the home or would need to leave the house without your sweetie pie for any length of time I definitely recommend getting 2 of them. Cons are that it is a little more difficult to potty train 2 at once. If one of them starts developing a bad habit, the other usually picks up on it and follows suit. That being said, you can train them both at once if you use the crate method I describe in my video. You just have to be consistent and can't let them run around the house unattended until they are PERFECT making it to the pad. If they have any accidents at all, lovingly put them back into the crate (don't make it seem like punishment, it's not meant as a time out - just a reminder where they're supposed to go). When I use this method, mine are 99% trained by 8 weeks old! Good luck to you and your new sweetie pie(s)? 🥰

I try to wait to interact until she stops whining not to reinforce the behavior. Tried to make it as cozy as possible in the bed half of the crate, and she used the correct pee pad side to potty. Any other suggestions or does she just need to cry for a few days/weeks?

      In that case, only let her out right after she has gone pee. Make a huge deal out of it. As soon as you see her go potty in the potty crate, immediately praise her with all the excitement you can muster and give her back scratches and let her out to run around for 10 minutes or so. Then back in the crate until she potty’s again

    Haha, my dog was trained like this. We have a super big crate, for a little dog. He's got lots of beds everywhere tho. We used to keep him in a cage with some food and water during the day while we're at school and work, but now we leave a pee pad in the bathroom for him and he's allowed loose on the top floor. He's been taught well, so he always uses the pee pads unless there's too much on them.

      Sorry to hear about the struggles you and your sweetie are having. I'd try this method to see if she figures out what the pad's for. I am bringing home my tiny little chihuahua next week. He is 9 weeks old but only weighs 1lb. I so want to start off right with him. I want him to learn to "go" outside eventually so would putting fake grass under the crate be ok. Also since he is so little should I not at this time try to get him to go outside to potty but work more on him using the fake grass for now?

    • @SweetiePiePets
      @SweetiePiePets  4 роки тому

      Liz Wright congratulations on getting your little sweetie pie 😍 Yes absolutely you can use the turf under the potty crate rather than potty pads. In fact, the turf is so heavy that you may not need to put a crate on top of it at all. I like to put the metal crate on top of the pads because sometimes the puppies play with the pads and shred them. But he will not be able to shred the turf. You could put your baby into a six panel habitat with the turf on one end and the bed on the opposite end and he will instinctually go as far away from his bed ad possible to go potty. If that’s where the tuft is, voila! Potty on the turf! And yes I do think that would make an easy transition once he’s older and has had all of the shots and is better suited to learn to go potty outside. I would keep them inside for now. Here’s the link to the little habitat I recommend for your little guy: amzn.to/2QeFygZ

      Antoine Gautreau I would recommend to start in a smaller space and slowly enlarge her area as she masters making it to the pad. Great tips!! I am a firm believer in puppy pads and not making my fur babies wait to go to the potty. I also read you can train your chihuahua to use the litter box as they grow and are able to get into it comfortably with a puppy pad in the litter box. I just lost my second senior shihtzu in May. Still grieving.... When I am ready for another fur baby I definitely want a long haired chihuahua. Do you have any advice as to whether to get one or two? And are the females or males more cuddly and affectionate? I have two dog loving boy rescue cats. One of them has been really grieving over the loss of our sweet shihtzus, especially our sweet boy who we lost in May. They passed away almost exactly a year apart. I know he will especially be happy to have a new dog to love. I would prefer to have one dog, but if two are going to make for a happier family then I would absolutely consider two. What do you recommend? Thank you so much for your great tips! I just subscribed to your page. Heidi Lynn

      Generally it only takes a couple weeks of this crate method before they learn to go to the potty pad. The trick is expanding their free roaming area very slowly and immediately restricting their free roaming space again if they begin going in the wrong spot. If you're home to take them outside (and you prefer to train them to hold it until outside rather than pee pad training), I recommend sticking with that method rather than the pee pad crate. However, keeping them closed in their "den/bed" crate in between potty breaks generally reduces the number of accidents. One last thing to keep in mind, it's not safe to let them go outside until they're completely vaccinated and have had time to build up immunity to Parvovirus. Generally that's around 14 weeks old.
