    How many times do we have to feed them in a day? I found a lil helpless one about between 1 to 2 weeks old.

      It’s great that you’re helping the little dove! At 1 to 2 weeks old, baby doves need to be fed every 2-3 hours during the day. Make sure to provide a suitable diet, like a commercial baby bird formula. If you’re unsure, contacting a local wildlife rehabilitator for detailed advice is always a good idea.

    How long does it take for them to be able to fly? I saved one. They’re about the size of the one with the mother keeping it warm.

      Thank you for saving the baby dove! 🕊️ Baby doves, also known as squabs, typically start to learn how to fly at around 11 to 15 days old. However, it might take a few more days for them to become fully confident and strong enough to fly longer distances. During this time, they’ll practice flapping their wings and making short flights. It’s great that you’re helping this little one out-just keep an eye on it as it develops its flying skills! If you have any more questions, feel free to ask. 😊

      Thanks for reaching out! For newborn baby doves, it's best to use a commercial baby bird formula, which you can find at a pet store. If you can't get that right away, you can use moistened bread or cereal, finely mashed hard-boiled eggs, and mashed vegetables. Make sure the food is very soft and easy to swallow. Feed them every 2-3 hours to ensure they get enough nutrition.

      It’s great that you’re taking such good care of the baby dove! 😊 Since it’s only 3 days old, it’s crucial to be very careful with what you feed it. If you don’t have access to commercial dove formula, you can try a temporary alternative, but I strongly recommend consulting with a vet or a wildlife rehabilitator for the best advice.
      In the meantime, you can create a soft, warm mixture using soaked, mashed grains like oats or rice, combined with finely ground seeds. You can also add a small amount of mashed, boiled egg yolk for extra nutrition. Be sure the food is very soft and warmed to body temperature, but not too hot, to mimic the consistency and temperature of regurgitated food.
      Use a small syringe or clean dropper to feed the mixture very gently, placing the food at the tip of its beak to encourage it to swallow naturally. It’s important to feed the dove frequently, about every 2-3 hours, but avoid overfeeding.
      Remember, this is just a temporary solution, and it’s crucial to seek professional guidance as soon as possible to ensure the dove gets the right care and nutrition at this critical stage.

    They eat rice

    • @zoooloogist
      @zoooloogist  5 місяців тому

      Actually, they primarily eat a substance called "crop milk" produced by their parents in the first few weeks of life. As they grow older, they gradually transition to a diet of seeds and grains, but rice isn't typically a staple in their diet. It's always important to feed wildlife the appropriate food to ensure they stay healthy! 😊

      @@Arthur_morgan_Official You're welcome! It's awesome that you were able to help the baby dove when it was scared. Hi!! I’m looking for some advice. I found a young “collared” dove. It’s obviously injured its wing, I’ve put water nearby but it doesn’t seem to be drinking. The nearest wild bird sanctuary is over 13miles away. Is there anything I can do in way of feeding & watering him/her in the meantime. Thanks

    • @zoooloogist
      @zoooloogist  22 дні тому

      Hi there! Thanks for reaching out and for caring for the young dove. Here are a few tips to help in the meantime:
      Try offering water in a shallow dish. You can gently dip the tip of the dove’s beak (not its nostrils) into the water to encourage drinking. Avoid forcing it.
      Young collared doves usually eat small seeds, grains, or crushed bird pellets. You can also try finely crushed sunflower seeds, millet, or oats. If you have birdseed mix, that’s ideal. Avoid bread or milk, as these can be harmful.
      If its wing is visibly injured, keeping it calm is crucial. Place it in a ventilated box lined with a soft cloth or towel to reduce stress and prevent further injury.
      Even though the nearest sanctuary is 13 miles away, it’s worth contacting them for advice, they may know of someone closer who can help. Alternatively, many local vets treat wild birds or can provide guidance.
      Let me know if you need more advice. You’re doing a great job taking care of the little one! 🕊️
