  • A teardown and crossover analysis of the Klipsch R-14M bookshelf speaker. Although the R-14M is the baby of the range, it is still my favorite from this generation of products from Klipsch.

    I loved the video. As an engineer, I love seeing schematics drawn and modifying parts. However, making a new crossover on this speaker is like giving your grandma a boob job. Look at the rp-600m, It seems like it has the same sound signature but had great reviews. I own these speakers, and will definitely be adding the acoustic treatments. But upgrading the crossover is.......

      You make a fair point. Cost-wise, it may it be worth it when there are other speakers on the market that can do better for not a lot more money. For those who like to tinker around with stuff and aren’t as concerned with the money, I don’t see the harm in it. One my favorite parts of the audio hobby is that the options of what to do are endless; even if not always practical.

    Nice video. Very detailed teardown and explanation. I never expect Klipsch to have these cheap crossover.

      @kas31 - Thank you! Crossovers with the cheap circuit boards and components are par for the course for almost all speakers; even costing into the thousands of dollars. There is absolutely nothing wrong with leaving speakers stock, but there’s also nothing stopping technical people from upgrading them!

    You can also use small strips of sound damping material like Dynamat on the woofers to help with ringing.

    Great informative video. I have a pair of b-10's that I would like to upgrade for something to do, but I am unable to figure out the inductor values. The b-10 uses the same circuit board as the R-14M and has same crossover of 2250hz. The b-10 low pass circuit has a 25uF cap and ? Inductor. (I assume it is the same as the R-14 though not sure) The high pass circuit appears to have different values to R-14, with resistor 9.1Ohms and cap 2.2uF and inductor unknown. I was wondering if you could provide me with inductor values for both circuits or how to calculate these values? Cheers

      If you watch my three-part series on upgrading the Paradigm Mini Monitors, you’ll see a more step by step approach. Purchase an LCR meter to measure all of the component values.
      Two speakers having the same crossover point does not mean the have the same components values. The values will depend entirely on the T/S parameters of the two drivers and the enclosure type/shape/size. That is why it is important that you measure the component values for each set of speakers before changing anything. Good luck!!

    Hello, many thanks for your video.
    If not upgrade crossover, does tough damping significally improve/change sound?
    Going to damp mine with wool felt. Should I expect wow effect after that?)
    Or.. damping is just half-measure?

    • @Casey_Schmidt
      @Casey_Schmidt  3 роки тому

      @Piano Forte - When it comes to upgrading speakers, it usually comes down to the simple philosophy of 'lots of small changes make a big difference'. The two purposes of the adhesive foam that I added was 1) to dampen internal reflections/resonances and 2) to dampen vibrations in the MDF. Adding felt, as you mention, may only help to dampen the the internal reflections. The acrylic stuffing that's already in the speaker does a decent job that. All of that said, the main source of fun with upgrades and modifications are the experiments with different ideas and approaches so don't let anyone discourage your experiments. Thanks for watching!

    My pair, one blew,¿no repair? I think it was due to excessive bass

    • @Casey_Schmidt
      @Casey_Schmidt  2 роки тому +1

      @Daniel Ramírez - If you send too much power or have the drivers exceed their excursion limit, they will fail. The only way to repair it would be to replace the driver that has failed.

    What thickness of the wire for the inductor is optimal in your opinion?

    • @Casey_Schmidt
      @Casey_Schmidt  2 роки тому +1

      There are two things to consider; price and size. The inductors with higher gauge wire are more expensive and larger. If you are working with a small speaker, you may not have room inside. You may also not want to pay the higher price. The best size is the one fits your build the best. Nearly anything is better than the original and inductors.

    Any idea why my left speaker is not coming in with a clear sound? The closest description I can come up with is that it sounds like a radio station that’s not quite tuned in. The speakers are only a few months old and have not been used a whole. Thanks so much! Nice video!!

    • @Casey_Schmidt
      @Casey_Schmidt  4 роки тому

      It is most likely to be a bad connection somewhere. Check your audio cables/speaker wire and make sure everything is connectedly as solidly as possible. If that isn't the problem, it maybe that one of the drives has failed or was faulty from the factory.
      Alternatively, you could be experiencing RF interference. Look into that if you can't find anything wrong with the hardware.

    Why not hot glue rather than blue tac?

    • @Casey_Schmidt
      @Casey_Schmidt  3 роки тому

      @Brian Dill - I'm not sure that hot glue would absorb the energy as effectively as blue tac or Dynamat. After hot glue cools, it becomes harder and more elastic than blue tac; which are the opposite characteristics that you'd want for absorbing energy. That is a good question, however.
