It is true I highlighted some of the best examples of Atmos. My point in doing so was to point out how good Atmos can be when done right. The original poster (who I am responding to in this video) watched one movie and concluded the entire Atmos format is worthless. My position is that Atmos is not worthless because here are some amazing examples of how good Atmos can be when done correctly. Hopefully this clarification is helpful. Thanks for watching!

Yes many movies claim to have ATMOS but the mix is terrible. That's when Auro3d can help with bad known poor mixes. If its good then use the ATMOS setting but for poor ATMOS it's good to use AURO3D (Denon/Marantz models)

Your selections are more the exceptions that the rule so I agree with the AVS Forum member. I've been a member of AVS since 2000. I also have a dedicated front projection home theater with a 7.2.4 Atmos set up and stadium seating. Its not the technology, its the application. I have an Atmos demo disc and it really demonstrates what a properly mixed Atmos system can do. I just feel studios don't do much past 5.1 for non-blockbuster movies. Even for Blockbusters, there is rarely anything in the Atmos heights. Its a real shame!

Exactly my thought. The main point here is that most Atmos mixes have very little active time throughout the movie. Showcasing the good mixes is obviously not a reply to the question raised. More interesting would be to compare for example the active time for the atmos channels compared to the bedlayer channels (excluding the center channel) for all the atmos mixes on a selection of streaming services. Or maybe just Disney+ or your streaming service of choice. (obviously it would be even better to compare blurays but I figured a streaming service like Disney+ would be better because it would set some sort of "scope" to the tests.

@@Olofberglund I'm not sure Atmos was meant to have 100% output over the whole of every scene. All three examples were good sounding Atmos.
Wonder if this issue (lack of sound) carries over into music audio Atmos. I couldn't guess if all surround sound is evenly applied, all engineers don't think alike. Betting there is no consistency (or standard) movie to movie audio and music to music audio for Atmos either.

  • @HoobtheNoob
    @HoobtheNoob 11 місяців тому +3

I found it really informative reading your comment section. I'm a mixing engineer who has had some mixing experience in Atmos - in an extremely well set up mixing theatre.
Some people are saying well you only get a tiny portion of the film in Atmos or using those speakers - and I'd say yes that's true but your mixing decisions are based on a huge number of factors one of the most important being contrast.
If everything is loud - nothing is loud. Equally if everything is everywhere all the time not only do you not have the wow factor for the big moments but it's actively distracting when you are watching simple dialogue scenes. There's no need to stick a ton of sound everywhere unless it's justified so naturally some films will have more Atmos than others.
Having said that if there is any justification - any atall - to put immersive sound in I would absolutely take it. It's a hell of a lot of fun to mix.
A lot of cinemas which have Atmos have it set up extremely poorly as well. I've never heard an Atmos mix in a cinema that does the system justice and I'm pretty sure that's down to cost saving and rooms that are too large for the mix to translate.
I'd love to setup an Atmos home theatre and get into the nitty gritty of that to see what's the most effective in that listening environment. That would be really informative for me on what are the best mix decisions to make, and what to prioritise when delivering home Atmos.
I'm willing to bet a lot of Atmos mixers have not heard an Atmos home theatre.

The entire video was to debunk a comment that was "too rash and short to conclusion" by countering with the opposite opinion that was also too rash and short to conclusion.
Nothing is wrong with the equipment like the decoding, wiring, levels, etc if the person is getting repeatable output for testing.
The comment being tested here is not that Atmos is not working, but that there is not enough content "to be worth it". This is a very well known issue that so many mixes have very small amounts of Atmos content. In this video to counter, you used some of the BEST known mixes that everybody plays and recommends in the "What is the best Atmos movies to show off my system" threads.
For any testing first and foremost you should have included the exact same content that was being previously discussed. That particular movie is actually supposed to be good for Atmos, though I have not watched it myself. But trust me, there are so so so many movies that are "Atmos" with minimal to no content on the height channels, missing scenes to capitalize on it, just using basic sound effects or some music.
Its been thoroughly tested by several and this fact remains true, there are multiple lazy mixes and terrible mixes and they in large outnumber the good mixes, that is why often for a bad mix movie some people actually upmix with DTS, Auro3D, etc to bring more content to the height channels than the default Atmos mix.
I appreciate your time to make a video, but as a reviewer, IT Guy, etc. It was more upsetting to me to see someone try to debase a truthful topic in the position of an "expert" with bad testing and false understanding of the issue than it would have been to get a rash and short conclusion" from a viewer or writer. If we want to be the ones to share valid opinions and testing with the world, we need to do better than this.

    • @GeorgeTheaterAtHome

I’m just a casual viewer and was curious what sound comes from my atmos speakers. I didn’t “debunk” the guy who wrote the post. I fully believe he’s not getting any sound from his speakers. I’m merely offering that his results are not indicative of everyone else’s results and there may be other factors at play. The conclusion I drew was that Atmos results can vary from system to system.
As with any new content format or upgrade, it takes time for the available content to catch up to hardware adoption. As more people implement Atmos setups, the more incentivized the studios will be to create stellar Atmos mixes. I’m hoping that’s what happens.
      Thanks for watching!!

I also agree with Vicious, and felt that way the entire video. I kept thinking, I hope he doesn't demo the top 3 reference tracks, and then you did exactly that. I know your intention wasn't to debunk that avs user but your counter was done in bad faith, if not, very bad optics.
That would be like me arguing room treatment is an absolute must for good sound then proceeding to do my recordings in a shower to demonstrate my point.
I applaud your efforts to make the video, but it is short sighted not to present the big picture. It would be really great and useful to do the same tests with poorly mixed atmos tracks. One that instantly comes to mind is Bumblebee. Remember that intro? Should sound amazing right? Not so much, it's mainly just the music score you hear up there.

I agree with this video. I also ran this test with movies, where i turn off my bed layer amp and just let the heights play (i.e. the only information playing is height channel signals), and some movies play a ton of audible height. But the distance between heights and bed layer can impact how audible the direction of the sound. I also agree with that uncompressed physical media is going to sound better. I think users also need to be mindful that some movies simply dont have a lot of height channel mixing (sometimes only 7.1) despite being labeled dolby atmos (i.e. they use atmos mixing, but no height mixing). Some netflix movies (black crab or encanto) have a ton of atmos and height movies now, totally immersive.

I had this exact same problem too. I found out that placing the 2 Atmos speakers in front, like he has, does not help the situation. All this does is give you a wall of sound. Place the 2 speakers to the sides of your seating position. After doing that go to: Amp Assign, Assign Mode, Top Middle. This will support Dolby Atmos and give you the bubble of sound you are looking for.

A fair demonstration would’ve been to showcase the same movie the plaintiff was complaining about.
At the end of the day, it all comes down to how the movie was mixed back at the studio. If it’s a poor mix, then that’s when switching to upmixers come in to play.

Thanks for this video while watching it I did a sound check on Vizio M5.1.2 soundbar and found it wasn't producing any audio so I had to check that the input was in the correct mode setting.
I have Vizio 5.1.2 I keep my height speakers at the maximum setting. I love Dolby Atmos with a passion when watching UHD 4K movies. Yes it works as designed. However there is so much more about the commenter not getting Atmos. For TV owners the TV has to support Dolby Digital+ or Dolby TrueHD. It has to do with the audio pass through as well so it can send the signals to all the speakers.
The worst thing about Dolby Atmos is the name and it's so over used that everyone now thinks it is its very own codex and can work just because every manufacturer has it on the label.
It only works from the source from what the content is mastered on to the service or type of disk to your own audio equipment right down to the audio equipment settings. Only Dolby Digital, DD+, Dolby True HD are only real Audio Codexs.

I have a Marantz AVR running a 5.1.4 set up. I have no eyesight. when I 1st started testing Atmos titles I was really confused I couldn't hear anything going up there. IN the end I turned down the ear level speakers. Honestly, even for the "good" titles, very little acgtually goes up there to make a difference. usually I find it's flybys, whipping overhead special effects, a bit of music. It's surprisingly silent.
What makes it more confusing is that so many reviews tell you x y z titles have all this atmos going on. I think your eyes trick you into thinking things are over head when they're not. Of course because I'm blind, this doesn't happen to me, it either is or it is not.
I will say that some AVs, depending what mode you have them set to, may send more of the 5.1 channels up to the atmos speakers as well, not sure what it was you were playing there, what you had your AV set to or what the input source was. Even if it was all true atmos though, I can confidently say that what you found there was the exception not the norm. I have well over 100 titles which I have tested and tuned my set up on extensively.
All that being said, I remember 15 or 20 years ago when 5.1 was really starting to come into its own for the home user and you'd get reviews saying how mind blowing the sound was when in reality, not much happened behind you. So maybe it will just take another 10y or so for things to actually get good :)

Unless he had it setup in his menus as front heights instead of top middle. Then they may have only got Atmos objects that are positioned in the front height area. Whereas top middle would likely receive a LOT more content since there would be more objects placed directly overhead than up and forward. Also. Soundtrack specific. There are some surprisingly quiet heights on some Atmos content. American Sniper dust storm sequence comes to mind. There is much of the dust storm coming from the bed layer vs the heights. If you turn off The bed layer and listen to the ceiling alone in that scene - surprisingly they are mostly quiet. However. I agree with your general conclusion. Atmos and ceiling speakers placed ideally add soooo much to the experience!

The Disk needs to be configured to output audio "Bitstream". Using your "display info" on your AVR change modes until you see "Atmos" if it is supported.
Had to jump through these hoops when trying to enable sound on my front wides. That channel only works on a few disks like Dune 2021, Blade Runner 2049. Higher end receivers can decode some sound for it using other disks, but currently the RMC-1 does not YET. I was thinking that this user may have his channel mis-configured to "reflective" atmos or front presence which works only with voices to spread them across screen. So many options to screw things up.

It appears to me that is speaker he tested maybe out of phase with the rest of the system. A easy way to test the phase is to remove the speaker covers where you can see the cone and place a 9-volt battery across the speaker terminal and watch which way the cone moves with reference to the polarity of the battery. Check each speaker in his system this way to see if the speaker cones move in the same direction with the + on the positive terminal. Maybe that speaker he tested was wired incorrectly at the factory.

If I heard that right that the two Atmos speakers were placed “behind” the TV and six feet up, that makes me question if during the test tone calibration the processor knew they were there and assumed little to no sound would go there since it’s technically out of range of where people would be sitting.
In other words, if the mix was meant to hover above the audience in a particular place, I would assume the processor knows the Atmos speakers are not in an ideal location and decided I won’t send much sound to that area as it makes no sense to do so.
Anyway, if I were to do an Atmos set-up (currently I run 7.1), I would attempt a 7.1.4 and those four Atmos speakers would all be hovering above the viewing area and not in the areas behind my mains and surrounds.

I haven't actually experienced Atmos yet and have always been a bit skeptical as to whether it really adds much. Based on your video and a few others however, maybe it offers more than I imagine.
I do plan to build something for Atmos, I just haven't decided what. I'm probably going to start with something simple, maybe a simple 2-way sealed box. I have three seating rows but the back row is against the back wall so I think four Atmos will be plenty. The rear speakers are going to be right over the back row's head anyway. I recently cut the parts to build the rear speakers and hopefully will have them built and installed by the end of the year.
I'm really not sure what the best approach is for the Atmos. Something with controlled dispersion making them more of a direct sound source or something making them more ambient. Any opinion on this? I need to figure out what I want to build so I can at least get started while I have some time off work. Starting Dec 4, 2023 I'm going to have about six weeks, after that it's a few days here, gone for weeks or months, a few days again, gone for weeks or months again...

I have experimented with Atmos music from Tidal and that can be very light in the overheads, to the point you can literally pull the 5.1 out and it sounds so similar, the Atmos in it really isn't doing much, but that's music where often the idea is to keep it faithful to the original stereo and so there is very minimal heights included, sometimes none at all.

What this person needs to understand is Dolby Atmos Dolby Atmos is not an audio format. The content needs Dolby True HD or DTS:X. If he first doesn't have this first you never get Atmos. The streaming provider had to deliver audio in this format. A standard DVD isn't going to provide it either. If your A/V hardware is so old you need one that says Dolby Digital Plus or Dolby TrueHD. Your audio settings must be enabled to have these all turned on.

I agree with what the person on reddit or whichever forum he was on, have been watching videos of the people who calls themselves audiophiles for last 2 years now who has spend like half a million dollar on their systems, to show us the atmos content they have to goto just some 2 minutes of the content in the entire movie. The problem is not with the system but the people who mixes the sound in a movie, you buy a blueray discs worth couple of hundreds of dollar which have a tag saying atmos and what you get in the entire movie is a 2 to 5 minutes of atmos mixing, even you showed the clip of a movie for 2 minutes, where that was the only scene where you get atmos, rest of the movie there is nothing for atmos. So as of this date, dont spend money on atmos, its useless.

+@heavenlyxtacy my Atmos and surround speakers are producing sound thru almost the entirety of most Atmos movies I watch. It’s an immersive sound experience that is a major leap forward from what we’ve had previously (5.1, 7.1 etc)

Atmos in movies just keeps getting better. Dune 1 and 2, Bladerunner 2049, Furiosa, are all more recent examples. Twister in Atmos is a great remaster of the original. I think movie audio engineers are getting better and better at mixing in Atmos. I’m feeling very optimistic for the future of the format.

@@GeorgeTheaterAtHome thats good to hear. For me I don't really into action movies but I love movies with great scores like The Crown etc. Do you mind if I ask if I should get a 5.2.4 like you? I will have a cinema 40 as the received? sorry to bother

      A 5.2.4 would be a great setup.

When you say “my setup is 7.2.4, so I have 4 atmos speakers”,
it is not “correct”, because all the speakers are atmos.
At least 11 speakers are playing your atmos. I just don’t know if the subs are a part of atmos or not.
What I have understood is that atmos doesn’t send “pcm” sound to the speakers but sounds’ object to the atmos decoder/interpreter, which is your atmos AV amp (or integrated in it),
and then your AV amp sends sound “pcm” waves accordingly to the right speakers in order to make you feel the 3D sound.
So, regarding these explanations from Dolby themselves, it seems that all the speakers are in use.

You are technically correct. Atmos is an audio format, not a speaker or channel. However, in colloquial terms, people use the terms “Atmos” or “height channels” to describe the channels on the ceiling or above the bed layer. So while it’s not technically correct to call them Atmos speakers, everyone pretty well understands what is meant when that description is used. Thanks for watching!

I think this has nothing to do with cables, speakers, processors or almost even placement. Instead I think his problem stems from initial setup. That’s the most likely reason he’s not getting sound from his Atmos.

to be fair, and this is from personal experience ...it really depends on the TYPE of movie that is being played.. ive had a few movies that where marked as ATMOS while streaming but i barely ever heard my height channels because of the genre of movie... however action movies they are very audible. i am going to assume this person was watching something like a drama or certain animated movies with atmos where you rarely hear the height channels..

I was able to build out a 5.1.2 Atmos setup for under $700 total and I was blown away by the sound. We are so lucky to have these formats and equipment available. Thanks for watching!

ATMOS depends so much on the placement of the height channels, if you don't have them at that 45 degree angle, you'll have a very meh experience, people with them up on the wall above the LCR at 30 or even 25 degrees aren't experiencing ATMOS.

There's loads of people like this in atmos forums, they just don't understand how it works, I've got a 5.1.2 but I use middle heights and it sounds good but it's not atmos, you need a minimum of 4 heights for it to work properly and to get "the bubble" 6ft above the front speakers as well 😂 deffo set up wrong

Why didn't you use the movie he mentioned? besides that he the writer is right atmos is some what not worth it if they are not using the height speakers enough in all movies with Atmos to justify the setup, I have the setup and barley turn it on when I watch content with the Atmos label on it because I already know it's a let down.
