To everyone who's loved and lost a dog, I'm crying with you.......
Thanks John
5 years ago this past month. Ask any of my family and friends and they’ll tell you the person they used to know died that day as well...
Thank you, I just lost my pup and I can relate deeply to this. I know I have a long path ahead that will be hard as hell without her, but she was so loving and such a great companion that I'll do my best. Rest in peace Pacha ❤️
Been through it three times now. But I would not change a thing about it. They have given us so many positive memories.
♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
Anyone who writes a poem about their beloved dog has to be a wonderful person.
Chris Chan wrote a poem about his dog...
I wrote a long one years ago.
Setter in the snow
It’s in German though.
So true...I think he was a wonderful person...
Jimmy Stewart: more class in his little finger than most of Hollywood combined.
Yup
Yes!
He might be my favorite all time
...all of Hollywood (modern) combined.
During the war they wanted to keep him safe, but no he wanted to join 445th Bombardment Group to pilot a B-24 Liberator...He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for actions as deputy commander of the 2d Bombardment Wing, He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for actions as deputy commander of the 2d Bombardment Wing and the French Croix de Guerre with palm and the Air Medal with three oak leaf clusters. Stewart was promoted to full colonel on March 29, 1945
It’s the moment the audience realise where it’s going. The silence. He has them in his thrall. I lost my best friend 3 weeks ago. I’ll play this when I feel sad.
This helped me through when I lost my 18 yr old cat years ago. I watched it over and over and cried my eyes out. Hugs to you. P.S. I still cry when I watch it.
@@bethanybass7620 it’s quite beautiful. Leads to heaving sobs for me. I’m watching it once a week to help me with the aching emptiness. Still can’t believe he’s not here anymore
@@gy4023Im so sorry. I hope youre feeling a bit better. Im certainly dreading the day that i have to go thru it. Hang in there! XO
Sorry for your loss. It’s the worst.
Sorry friend. Hope you're doing well.
This is why he was one of the most beloved actors ever. He had a good soul and you can't fake that
+cjrrun
He was a war hero, republican and real American unlike those self hating Hollywood liberals today.
+bighands69
*sigh*
Someone makes a beautiful comment and all you think about is your little insignificant political bullshit war, not wasting a chance to let everyone know about them "libfags".
God I despise people like you who know nothing but hatred and their political extremes!
+Sunshine It's good you hate the haters. Because they hated first.. Yeah. Lovely.
Slaughtz
I said I despise these people, that is something VERY different than hate.
But pointing out how "hateful" I am was probably more important than thinking about my core message for just a second, eh?
Sunshine plz, disgust or repugnance is constantly equated with hatred on the political left in order to justify calling people haters :D if you're one of the few consistent ones, good for you
Sometimes, when I need a "reset," required by the inundation of our modern media, I look at this video. The decency and humanity that Mr. Stewart shares reminds me of the the better people we can and should be.
Beautifully said! ❤️
I agree
Couldn't had said it any better
You are not alone! I return for the same.
Me too.
When you hear such a giant's voice crack, like Jimmy's does in his recitation, your know something solemn and very precious is being talked about. Thank you, Mr. Stewart, for sharing this from the great beyond. We sure do hope you were reunited with your Beau again.
Beautifully said, James!
Yes indeed! Beautifully said James
Yes, .they're together again. Going for walks and playing, forever.
Thanks James. You sure got that right. And I heard from a prophet, that I respect, that our pets go to heaven, and they also talk. But I don't think that Beau & Jimmy need words. Looks like they communicated perfectly without them.💖
I too had tears come down. I also pray that Jimmy made it to Heave. I am so looking forward to meeting him and Beau.
I used to deliver groceries to the Stewart house 6 days a week back when and I'm the guy who Mr. Stewart writes about being Beau's favorite prey.
We used to use a platform cart we would put the boxes on and Beau hated it. He bit me twice in a couple of years and the second time he really got me. One of Mr. Stewart's housekeepers looked at the back of my pants leg and there was blood all down the back of it. Nothing serious but it hurt like hell.
Anyway a couple of days later when I made my delivery the housekeeper said Mr. Stewart wanted to see me. He walked into the kitchen and asked how I was and apologized for Beau. Needless to say there was a pretty big Xmas tip that year. Beau passed on about a year later and Mr. Stewart wrote the poem he read.
Only met him a couple of times passing through the kitchen but he always stopped and shook my hand and asked how I was, a genuine, humble, class guy.
Thank you so much for sharing this! What a cool story.
Thank you for your contribution to this thread Mr Miller it brings even greater context to this most beautiful moment in television history.
Thanks for the comment, adds a great dimension to the poem, and of course to Mr. Stewart, one of my favorite actors of all time. Bloddy pants notwithstanding, you're a lucky man to have shared those moments.
You sir are also a class act. In today's world there would be lawsuits tv shows and frothing fake news expounding the carelessness of it all. A controlled world of snowflakes and safe places will have no warm and edgy stories to tell... Indeed you had a level of courage knowing Beau was looking for you. You sir give respect in reference to "Mr. Stewart" and have your talent in the way you share of a memory to us. Thank you Paul for the best post script!
Awesome..
Anyone who ever have had a dog can relate to this poem so very well articulated
Amen to that. I can never watch this without tears pressing on. At least so far. For years I have frequently re-watched this clip, to remind me. About life, my dog and that there are good people in the world.
I miss you so much.. Thanks Mr. Stewart for reminding me its okay..
dogs are some of the best people I know
well, you don't know my dog then.
The first couple nights are the roughest. I know what he went through.
I lost one of my dog 2 nights ago, and I really miss her. She was so lovely... I adopted her when she was 6 years old. We spent 8 years together. I'll miss her every day of my life.
So sorry for your loss. We only get our dogs from the animal shelter. Always giving unconditional love
Jimmy’s voice cracked. He spoke haltingly. Johnny was quiet. A falling pin could have been heard in that audience. And for three minutes, a Norman Rockwell slice of life was clear enough to reach out and touch - and experience - with all of one’s senses…
Well said.
So true. Those last few lines he read and the entire studio fell completely silent as the audience there and all over the country watching, as well as Johnny himself, felt the raw emotion of what Jimmy was saying.
I love your sentiment 😊
3:12 that was my childhood dog. Got her when I was 6. She passed when I was 23. I leaned on her so much through the tough times. The last couple of years of her life, she developed dementia and got confused alot. But it was still my Emily. I went from a little boy relying on her to being her rock. And that I was. I took it very seriously to always be her safe place. I would've fought a million man army for her. RIP Emily. I cannot wait to see you again and tell you all about my life
Wow!!! You're comment made me tear up😢 what a wonderful doggie daddy you are!!!❤
Give her a hug from me. God Bless.
Oh man. I love how in the beginning the audience is laughing and chuckling thinking this to be some funny story, but by the end you could hear a pin drop. Amazing. Sure dont make em like Jimmy anymore.
Morgan Freeman comes close.
Jimmy Stewart is one of my Forever Favs!
How precious Jimmy! Thank you ☺️ for sharing your delightful poem❣️🙏🏻☺️🇺🇸
I had a dog named Beau too. He lived 17 yrs. 8 mo. & 12 days. I will forever miss him. He's been dead 40 years now, but I'll see him soon again.
You could hear a pin drop in that audience. Jimmy was a treasure
We lost our beloved friend 3 days ago. Somehow it makes me feel better to know that the love and mourning for a dog is universal.
I am so sorry for your loss. I remember the day while in college and my dad called to tell me about our miniature collie, named Dolly. She was struck by a car out where they lived, after retiring. The tears fell so long, and I realized my dad was crying too. This big man, an ex firefighter. He wrote me a letter or a note, I guess, to read when I graduated from college. It simply said that you haven't known real loss until you had to say good bye to a pet. Sorry this is so long.
He also gave me some advice. Do not listen to people who wonder why you are not "over it". You are not supposed to ever get over it. Find a place in your heart to keep the memory alive. That and love are the only things worth dying for.
@@dkcol6796 Thank you so much for your kind words. My husband and I have both lost our fathers whom we loved with all our hearts. But somehow this was worse. Maybe because they can’t talk to you at the end? I don’t know. But true dog lovers understand.
Dogs are the only friend I know that love unconditionally and they seem to know when you need a friend. Our dog Beauregard always did 🙂🙂
You are so right about the pain of losing a dog …..I can remember thinking that it hurt as much as when my mother died.
It is truly like losing a family member. Not just an animal. RIP. Dusty and Toby Dog loved forever. ❤
One of the greatest moments of American television.
Charles B probably not a dry eye in the house! How wonderful for you!
I remember this like yesterday......God BLESS Jimmy Stewart.
It certainly was....😢
This and Norm's last Letterman
WELL SAID. I AGREE 100%
On December 30, 2022, I lost my dog named Beau. He was such a good boy. I’ll always love him.
Jimmy Stewart captured how a true dog lover feels about their best friend.
His description of beau shows that he has empathy for the dog and it's psychology. I love this poem. It makes me think of all good relationships between dogs and their people.
Jimmy sums it up for anyone who ever had a dog. No matter how long they've been gone, you still miss them every day, and wish you could just pet them one more time.
I couldn’t agree with you anymore, well said
The audience was laughing at first, but those laughs turned into tears after Mr. Stewart finished his poem. Watching this was very touching
"He lived in my eyes, died in my lap, and is buried in my heart.",
unknown author.
That's beautiful xo
Read the rest. You bad !!
'unknown' it was Shakespeare you dunce.
Oh wow that is beautiful
@Private Account asshole
Johnny, reaching over, touching that great man, the beloved actor, on the back, as he wiped his tears, is a beautiful moment.
This was very touching. Thank you for sharing this wonderful clip. :-)
This is The sentence with the most commas I've ever seen while still being able to make sense of it.
@@user-ht5ce2it3z Sadly, punctuation is lacking in todays literary world... both amateur and professional. I particularly find it frustrating, when there are no commas, causing words to run into each other. In some instances, paragraphs take on another meaning entirely.
@@user-ht5ce2it3z I would have restructured the sentence to eliminate some of those commas, but they are correctly placed. It's nice to know there are still people who practice proper English and punctuation. 👍
A dog is the purest love you will ever have. Without need, response or strings. Always happy to see you no matter what. This poem is beautiful and hits home to anyone who's ever owned a dog.
Hi Sean,
There are things in life that we just take for granted at the time then that goes as James says.
I still have Amy's car restraint that I can't part with oh man the places we went and Her Head out the window and the smiles from others passing.
I watch alot of pet things and if I could sum it up it would be The Hand Of Love

The dog owns us, forever.
I can never get through this video without crying. I've lost so many wonderful "Beaus" in my life and it is always devastating and heartbreaking . From Jimmy's poem I can see Beau doing all the things he writes about, the good and the somewhat bad, but he was always loved, as all dogs should be. Thank you Jimmy and Beau, together forever.
The only thing worse than losing our fur-babies would be not having them in the first place. I think we put ourselves through such an excruciating loss because, frankly, they’re worth it.
Absolutely.
This is why the Johnny Carson show was the best and can never be repeated. The guests he had were from the old era and brought in such insight, humor and or sadness. Jimmy Stewart's heart showed in this poem and Johnnys response was so honest. An Iron man like Johnny even got teary eyed. Miss these guys and the great programming.
shows these days are more political related instead of fun
So very true. There will never be another show like it. You are right. And this moment with Jimmy was one of its shining moments.
You dont like hearing about how Paris Hilton thinks something is hot, or the no personality celebrities? Neither do I. Johnny was really before my time, but I enjoy these reruns very much. Especially Jimmy Stewart.
Watch this ua-cam.com/video/0sMIFWsIdG8/v-deo.html
Heartfelt and so touching. This is before Hollywood went mean and bitter.
My Moosie would come into my room when I went to bed . He'd put his chin on the bed and I'd give him hugs and tell him he was the best dog in the world. Then he'd go to his spot to sleep. Soon after I lost him and had gone to bed I swear I felt him put his chin on my bed. God, how I miss him. He was my baby. It's been about 25 years.
Moosie came to say goodbye and to let you know that he never left you -- he's always there with you in spirit. 💞
Jimmy Stewart....the definition of class
I just put my dog down five days ago.... she was a Yorkshire Terrier and her name was Beau as well.... God I miss and love her.... tell her... she’s in peace now and isn’t in pain....
I’m sorry for your loss Yorkies are the absolute best
I'll always love an actor named Jimmy Stewart.
Almost forty-two years have passed since that night in the man still brings tears to my eyes.
Same. My neighbors had to bury their dog yesterday. I thought of this and sent to them.
I have a dog named Beau... I can't make it through this poem without balling my eyes out.. Dogs are family...
JIMMY STEWART WAS SUCH A GREAT GUY. AN AMERICAN HERO. A REAL FINE DECENT HUMAN BEING. HE REMINDS ME OF MY CHILDHOOD WHEN YOU COUD GO OUT FOR A WALK AND NOT THINK YOU MIGHT GET MUGGED. THE WORLD IS SO DIFFERENT NOW.
I lost my beautiful girl yesterday. No living being loved me the way she did, and vice versa. I'm devastated beyond the ability to explain, but I had the rare privilege of being caretaker, best friend, confidant and purveyor of pure love. I'll never, ever get past the loss. Sophie, please be there when I go. I miss you.
HUGS!!
Michael Duvic I am sorry for the loss of your friend. Peace to you, and to her.
+Michael Duvic very well said!

I come here to re-watch this every few months. Very beautiful, moving and wonderful.
Robert Machulla me too
Me too but now I’m a blubbering mess
Robert Machulla. I just found this..and I've saved it..
I still choke up and cry and watch Jimmy read this poem several times a year.
RIP Jimmy and Beau.
Robert Machulla I came back to see this again, too, because I lost my beautiful Golden Retriever just last week and Jimmy's heart felt poem gave me some comfort that other people lose their pets, too, and there's no escaping the loss when the capacity for love is also for a dog.
Nothing makes me cry more than this video
I had no idea I had so many tears in me. This stuff just kicks my ass. Jimmy, I hope you and Beau are taking long walks in heaven.
When his voice starts getting weak, my heart just breaks... the feels
What a class act this man was, he was from the greatest generation, this poem about his dog was so touching, sensitive and emotional for any pet owner. R.I.P. James Stewart.
Greatest generation BAH !
Jimmy was an American man. A great man.
"Beau"
by Jimmy Stewart
He never came to me when I would call
Unless I had a tennis ball,
Or he felt like it,
But mostly he didn't come at all.
When he was young
He never learned to heel
Or sit or stay,
He did things his way.
Discipline was not his bag
But when you were with him things sure didn't drag.
He'd dig up a rosebush just to spite me,
And when I'd grab him, he'd turn and bite me.
He bit lots of folks from day to day,
The delivery boy was his favorite prey.
The gas man wouldn't read our meter,
He said we owned a real man-eater.
He set the house on fire
But the story's long to tell.
Suffice it to say that he survived
And the house survived as well.
On the evening walks, and Gloria took him,
He was always first out the door.
The Old One and I brought up the rear
Because our bones were sore.
He would charge up the street with Mom hanging on,
What a beautiful pair they were!
And if it was still light and the tourists were out,
They created a bit of a stir.
But every once in a while, he would stop in his tracks
And with a frown on his face look around.
It was just to make sure that the Old One was there
And would follow him where he was bound.
We are early-to-bedders at our house--
I guess I'm the first to retire.
And as I'd leave the room he'd look at me
And get up from his place by the fire.
He knew where the tennis balls were upstairs,
And I'd give him one for a while.
He would push it under the bed with his nose
And I'd fish it out with a smile.
And before very long
He'd tire of the ball
And be asleep in his corner
In no time at all.
And there were nights when I'd feel him
Climb upon our bed
And lie between us,
And I'd pat his head.
And there were nights when I'd feel this stare
And I'd wake up and he'd be sitting there
And I reach out my hand and stroke his hair.
And sometimes I'd feel him sigh
and I think I know the reason why.
He would wake up at night
And he would have this fear
Of the dark, of life, of lots of things,
And he'd be glad to have me near.
And now he's dead.
And there are nights when I think I feel him
Climb upon our bed and lie between us,
And I pat his head.
And there are nights when I think
I feel that stare
And I reach out my hand to stroke his hair,
But he's not there.
Oh, how I wish that wasn't so,
I'll always love a dog named Beau.
leonel thank you.
leonel blessings to you! 🙏🏼♥️
💔Hope Jimmy and Beau found each other.
We just heard him say this!!
Thank you my friend!
Back in the day when going on a talk show meant something. When it wasn't just about plugging a movie, back in the day where people had something to say to each other. This. Is. Art.
+Kyle Rokeh
He as a devout republican and that is the man in a nut shell.
Even democrats back then were not loony liberals.
Yes he was but that was a different GOP back then. Today he'd be a democrat.
Yes, his war record needs more exposure and circulation and generally being broadcast. Such as his flying into combat zones while being ordered to avoid them. And his comment after his aircraft broke in two on landing " Someone could get hurt in one of these damn things"
Are you referring to the poem as art? I'm not sure from the comment. If you're referring to the 'back in the day' when people had something to say I guess you missed that. Life was different. People talked to each other. I don't know that life itself was better because life was often hard but generally I think people were better. There are still many good people in the world but percentage-wise perhaps just less of them today.
Very well said. I completely agree. A very poignant and moving tribute from an iconic American actor.
Now I'm sure he is heaven with Beau.
Ary M and gloria
Can't you picture them all out for their evening strolls now.
so touching
All Dogs Go to Heaven.
@@dwh0221 Always believed that dogs live much shorter lives than humans because they learn to give unconditional love in a very short time--humans on the other hand need far more time and even then most often don't get it right or not at all

So classy, he was a rare breed. See what I did there? ;-)
Wonderul Buffalo --------- and "extremely coincidentally" my wife and 9yr-old son call me buffalo. Go figure. Very funny comment....thanks! :)
Imagine the loss if the Germans had managed to get him on any of those B-24 missions he flew over occupied Europe. Carson, McMahon and Stewart all served in that biggest of wars. It makes one wonder, out of all those millions of men and women who perished in the war, how much greater the world could have been had they not been extinguished.
You never know...

Tears streaming down my cheeks as I'm petting my cat and saying to her, "I'll always love a cat named Stella."

General James Stewart was one of the Greatest Americans who ever lived.
When he came to the part "and now he's dead" while his voice trembled, I melted. What an incredible soul.
I lost two dogs this past year (one last night) and this clip has helped me immensely. People always talk about wanting to find goodness in this world, and I believe that the one place where true goodness lies is in our pets, who give us so much love and truly show us how to be better people.

I think ol' Jimmy brought tears to everyone's eyes.
He Did Mine!!!
I just had to come & listen to Mr. Stewart read this again. Tomorrow is my birthday & it is also 3 years since my sweet boy Milo had a heart attack & passed away. He was born with a bad heart & I was told he would not live past the age of 5, but he did. He gave me 7 beautiful years of unconditional love & devotion. He died almost exactly a month after his newest brother, Sid, who had been abandoned to the streets died. One night I got out of my car to pump gas & Sid just climbed in. I don't know how long he lived on the streets, but I knew from that moment he would not die on them. He was so sick after that hard life. I had him 6 short months before the illness took him. They both died in my arms. There are times I think I see them run out of the woods after one of their adventures & then I realize, it is love's memory that makes me see that. I miss them so much. Mr. Stewart's poem says it all & the emotion in his voice expresses it.
Your comment made me shed hot tears. Rest in peace for your friends. I hope we will reunite them.
I miss my best friend, 18 years you were a good pup bullet forever and always.
I remember seeing this many years ago, when it first aired. I was a kid then. Now, I'm 52, and my husband and I just lost the only dog we've had together. His name was Charlot (the French name for Charlie Chaplin). He was a beautiful, sweet chocolate lab. He died last week, at the age of 14.
One if the greatest videos on the internet. I love how Johnny Carson began to cry. This made me cry.
Wait, what? The actor acts like he's crying, and Johnny decides the right thing to do is act like he was touched, and that made YOU cry? I don't understand.
+greg55666 First let me do this - 0100110001011011011101100011 - if you are a robot void of human emotion then that code of binary should enhance your capacity towards human understanding. Regardless of whether it's acting or genuine (it's genuine) it's still very touching and can bring emotions and memories of past pets to the viewers mind. People cry and get emotional while watching movies, that is acting and not at all genuine. It's not hard to see why this would make a lot of people cry.
Well said, but amazing it needs to be said. It is not acting by Jimmy or by Johnny. It made me cry too, and hug my two border collies Terra and Calvin. Love the binary response. Again, it is no act by Jimmy or by Johnny. Anyone who has ever had a dog that is part of the family would understand.
greg55666 Jimmy is real. Sorry u don't feel

My wife and I had two GSDs- father and daughter. We lost Ross aged 16 in 1987 and his daughter, Kim at the same age in 1994. They both come into my dreams from time to time and my heart flips. Jimmy Stewart is a class above all others with his acting skills but there's no acting here. What he says comes straight from his heart and his words reach out to all dog-lovers.
It wasn't just the story of his beloved dog that made it special. It was the man delivering the poem as only Mr. Stewart could.
Very rarely do I cry. A poem about love. A poem about the very thing that makes us human. Without love all we have is distraction.
@Private Account "Pretentious"- showing or betraying an attitude of superiority. That's rich coming from you.
Class... Websters definition see Jimmy Stewart. If you have ever owned and loved a dog there is no way you are making thru this video without shedding a tear. Jimmy loved his Beau as all of us blessed to have owned a dog loved ours; no acting from the actor on this one straight from the heart!

Jimmy Stewart was one of Hollywood's greats... they don't make 'em like that anymore.
Once the audience realized where the poem was going you could hear a pin drop. And justifiably so. Such a class. Such a character. Such as like might not come our way again
This really helped me process my grief after my dog died.
It's been 2 years now since our beloved family member passed away. Kidney disease had started ravaging her body several months earlier until it was just too much to bear. As the injection coursed her veins, those last 20 seconds of life were made very special for her while she felt us stroke her head and she heard my wife say, "You're such a good dog." That's all she ever wanted to hear. She always tried to be good and she always was. She was everything to us. We will always miss you. You are such a good dog.
Yes, Phil I feel your pain! My Maggie is waiting for me at the Rainbow Bridge too. Went about 2 years, without her,( had her for 14 years) then went and rescued another from the Humane Society, She is such a joy, not nearly the dog Maggie was, but I think she knows I saved her, somehow...just think about it when you are ready....
Sincerest condolences on your loss.
you just made a man cry
I remember every one I had and when I find a old photo the memories rush in.
Phil Margolies Phil, we went through the same experience with our 14 year old Lab two months ago. She had kidney disease that we had treated and battled to keep her alive until she looked at me in a way that I knew, this was it. My daughter and I took her to the vet to put her down. We wrapped her in a fleece doggie blanket and I told her over and over that she was a good dog and how much we loved her. I think loving an animal that makes us more human, like having children, gives us more capacity to love.
We'll all be with our Beau's, one day...after we pick them up at Rainbow Bridge.
😭💔🐕
My best friend, a loyal Doberman named Beau, passed late last night. Rest in piece Bubs! Dad will always love you!
Brigadier General with a soft heart. Respect.
I read about this clip, knew what was coming and the contents, yet around minute 3:00 and onward the tears just started on their own.
I Miss my Prince...
This video reminds me what a gift Jimmy Stewart was. A terrific man with a beautiful heart. Brings me to tears.
Johnny Carson never to be replaced 😢😢😢😢😢
This makes me cry every time
Awwww ... my god. How sweet. How softly powerful. James Stewart ... wow. Amazing actor, kind man. RIP Beau. I hope they're together again.
If you are a dog lover-and aren't we all--this is one beautiful moment, although tissue is a must. I had my Max for 13 years and he loved and protected us for all 13 years. I see this brilliant, emotional tribute to Jimmy Stewart's Beau and think of my Max. Thanks so much Jimmy and pass the Kleenex.😪😪😪
My best memory of Jimmy Stewart. I’ve had that “heart” dog. Her name was Bandit. 🥰🥰🥰
We named a dog Harvey, a big ol yellow lab. We picked him up the day Jimmy Stewart died. This just reminds me so much of why I loved that dog
