My Dad worked with James Stewart many years ago and he told me that Jimmy used to like pulling up an apple box and talking to the crew; a real down to earth individual and a true gentleman. God rest them both.
As I watched this episode with Johnny and General Stewart, I was thinking how much he reminded me of my neighbor, who is in his mid-eighties and still farms about 900 acres with one of his sons. Jimmy Stewart comes across as a man entirely at home with himself and I felt I could just stand at the fence and talk with him about nearly anything. That kind of person is so hard to find these days, anywhere, let alone Hollywood.
One of the most famous people in American History. Yea sure, John Wayne, Marlon Brando, Paul Newman, Lawrence Olivier, Humphrey Bogart all sort of fit into that same category. But James Stewart may have been even more popular to the movie going audience during his peak than any actor ever.

The only one was Audie Murphy...but he gained stardom after the war. Jimmy Stewart had to jump through hoops just to be accepted as a 33yr old. Becoming a B-26 Liberator bomber pilot...a Captain that survived the minimum missions required...something less than 20$+% of crews survived to reach...but he continued flying being promoted to a full bird Colonel and as you referred to him, he retired as a Brigadier General and it wasn't some honorary rank...he earned it...
Jimmy Stewart was one of kind. I always wondered what it would be like to sit and talk with him a bit. A man to be greatly missed by those who don't even know him.
Jimmy Stewart was the kind of individual deserving of the Medal of Freedom. A true American original and a national treasure. I never tire of his movies and Johnny was brilliant in this interview.
Heather Marie : I grew up with Jimmy Stewart movies from the 1950’s on. Back in the day, there were Hollywood Stars, and they were bigger than life, actors like John Wayne, Gregory Peck, Heston, Stewart, and others, like Gable, Fonda, and George Scott. James Stewart was an American war hero, patriot, husband, father, and nice man. The “stars” of today don’t shine nearly as bright as Stewart!
@@konedog55 In the '70s I was a latchkey kid and every afternoon when I got home, the afternoon movie (when was the last time you ever heard of that?) was just coming on and featured great films like The Philadelphia Story, Casablanca and It Happened One Night. Every time the studios attempt to remake and update one of these films I get a little sick inside. What made these films great were not the stories--which were terrific themselves--but the great actors. Like James Stewart.
Nobody wonders why we all Love Jimmy Stewart. What's not to love? Poised, relaxed, humble, gracious, funny, A Real Man Of Substance, who could easily have sat out WWII because of his fame, but chose to fly Bombers in Combat....the Full Package
It's like sitting around the living room at a family reunion listening to a beloved grandfather tell stories of his life, with wry, dry humour. Quite enjoyable.
Jimmy Stewart has always reminded me of my grandpa from the first film I saw him in as a child (I was born in 1988 so this would be mid-90s). Seeing him in his later years, they even looked similar. This interview touched my heart, not only because he's one of my favourite classic actors but also it makes me feel connected to my grandpa who passed away in 2010.
So great that Johnny brought the stories out of Jimmy. I have always loved hearing the old folks stories and asking them questions. It is amazing that we have this footage now.
I admire this good heart of our late actor Jimmy Stewart. He was deacon of Beverly Hills Presbyterian Church where I became a member. His spirit and sense of class makes him incredibly reputable, remembered and very much so a role model. Best to his family always. Tyler Lord Hamilton

@@davidgibbs7232 You jumped a lot of hoops. Are you telling me, you got all of that, out of my simple question? Tell me again how you are not racist? You defended yourself from racism, when no accusation of racism was offered...why? That came from your internal thought process, that has been lying to your conscience for many years, and you nearly got the words to believe your lies, but your subconscious will not cover, and you are not smart enough to explain, so you defended where there wasn't an attack. Then how did the Tuskeegee Airmen come about? And black doctors, scientists, physicists, etc? America has provided more of these opportunities than anyother country!
Not only a famous actor, but an actor in some of the most famous movies of all time! Two of those movies have been on the ‘Best Movie Ever Made Lists! The first one, ‘It’s A Wonderful Life’ and my favorite movie of all time, ‘Vertigo’! An actor who didn’t safely stay in Hollywood, during WW 2 making ‘Buy Bonds’ commercials, but fought in WW 2, not just as a soldier but as a pilot, and recognized as an Air Force Hero! And then... A Brigadier General as well! He was in real life, everything that a normal world class actor would kill to play, and... was also in real life what every world class hero secretly dreamed they could do! Actor, musician, husband, father, an American citizen who didn’t shirk from his duty, soldier, war hero, pilot, officer, and not just a WW 2 heroic officer/pilot, but a Brigadier General to boot!!! He accomplished in one life time, what would have taken 10 famously extraordinary men to do!!! And in the end, his greatest accomplishment... Humility!!! Thanx, Jimmy, RIP...
Jimmy Stewart played an excellent starring role in "The Glen Miller Story", I saw the movie only once, when it was a new release and never forgot just what a good role he played after all these years.
@@BobbyTucker I've seen it at least a dozen times. Come to think of it, it's about time to watch it -- and "The Spirit of St. Louis" -- again. I would love to find "Strategic Air Command",too.
Jimmy Stewart was truly one of the greats. the stars of today can't hold a candle to him. look at Jimmy,s resume and you will find more then a handful of true classics. love you, and thanks for 60 years of class.
Flew combat in World War II. Pilot in the reserves. Flew B-52's. Flew a few missions in Vietnam. Lost a son in that war as well. A true American hero...
@@TheJer1963 Yes. And it was NOT honorary. He earned it! And Navy, you should know this one: Glenn Ford stayed in the Naval Reserves after the war and became a Captain.
I saw a documentary on Jimmy Stuart. It mentioned his last bombing mission and how it affected him. He paid a price during his service as did all WWII vets. Showed his picture upon entering service and at discharge. He aged quite a bit hair was thin. His family was shocked at his appearance. It's a wonderful life was his first movie after his service. It said he drew on his war experience to do that anger scheme at his kids in that movie. That was what made it so believable.
He's got to be my favorite actor. He was way before my time but I knew about him thanks to the ubiquitous broadcast of "It's A Wonderful Life," during the holidays, but also his other must see film "Rear Window." The more I learn about him the more I like him and the more impressed I am with him as an actor and as a human being.
Please watch the Hitchcock film Rope. Absolutely fantastic, based on a true story, and ahead of it's time. Its basically filmed in one continuous shot, as much as film would allow at the time. I think 7 minutes at a time was all they could do. Its absolutely amazing. One would be remiss to ignore The Philadelphia Story. Jimmy at his finest and hands down the best portrayal of someone drunk. Some of the greatest one liners as well
I clicked on this because I'd never seen Jimmy Stewart this old. Then when he said "Talkin' faster," I laughed out loud. That alone made this video worth it. :)
caomhan84 I’m old enough to have seen this when it aired. Still makes me lol. One of the best 🥰. Check to see if you can find the Carson interview he did reciting a poem about his dog Blue. You will love it.
Im 42 years old and I thank God I grew up with my grandparents,so I could know and appreciate all of these fine older actors and the movies they were in.
I adore James Stewart. I blub every year when I watch 'It's a wonderful life'. I have read about his war service, and loved how he motivated his men, taking dangerous missions. As an ordinary Brit, with many American cousins, he is one of the Americans I most admire. John
I meet Mr. Stewart when I was about 16 years old, he was filming Bend of the river and what a gentleman he was, and he had the prettiest blue eyes I have ever seen. Wish there were more actors like him.
Brig. General Jimmy Stewart never smoked in his life. One of my favourite actors from the golden years of Hollywood. A gentleman of great integrity. Something that is lost in Hollywood today.
Brigadier General, named the third-greatest male screen legend of the Golden Age of Hollywood by the American Film Institute, behind Humphrey Bogart and Cary Grant and a down to earth legend. They just don't make gentlemen like this anymore. So much respect for this man.
Strategic Air Command - one of my favorite movies. But this man was the real deal. As stated in another comment, he WAS a bomber pilot, and a commander in WW2. Flew combat missions as well as led the wing. Ended up as a general in the air force (reserve?). They don't come any better than this!
They cannot make a movie about this man and his life because none of the actors these days understand or appreciate what (Brigadier) General Stewart did for us.
JimmycStewart is such a legend and I remember him playing on westerns and could watch him every day of the week..sensational..Jimmy has been on so many shows..thank you Jimmy..awesome days of viewing the best that there ever was.

I saw Mr. Stewart in the Hollywood Christmas parade in 1992 and let me tell you what a thrill and honor it was for a 21 year old film student. Wonderful memory and incredible actor & human being.
He was a bomber wing commander WWII, B24s. I know a Veteran who was a bombardier under his command, he told us that the wing commander usually didn't fly the missions but Jimmy Stewart flew with them sometimes. I asked how he picked the missions to fly, he told me that he flew the hard ones...when they were unlikely to return. I've never Jimmy Stewart brag about his role in the war, typical of the greatest generation.
during the shooting of the famous movie "Flight Of The Phoenix" our German actor Hardy Krüger asked Stewart about his bombarding German cities during WW II and Stewart told him better not to speak about this issue! rgds from Germany
Johnny Carson was so good at just talking to people...he didn't need exaggeration, or to be crude, or to set one part of America against the other. He was just a nice guy to listen to. I have not watched or listened to late night tv since his retirement.
I remember seeing this originally aired on television. So blessed to have seen these two legends. I miss these types of people. Sincere. Talented. Clean humor.
Jimmy Stewart...as a boy this man was an idol. He was someone I wanted to be like....I miss watching all those movies for the very first time. Sure, you can watch them again, but an old man now, I watch for what "I may have missed." Nothing beats the first time...its a real memory.
He was way before my time but I love Jimmy Stewart. His work with Hitchcock was always outstanding, and I greatly admire the longevity of his marriage. Plus, he got married quite late so it still gives me hope for myself lol R.I.P Jimmy
about 1990 my friend Kelly did a "Tour of The Stars Homes" in Hollywood and she told me it was completely boring until the driver said "Jimmy Stewart's house is on the left" and she looked and saw him on a step ladder on his front porch changing the night light...when he was probably about 80 years old!!, (about the same time as this Tonight Show appearance)...the man had some SERIOUS fortitude and an incredible sense of humour!.
I met Jimmy Stewart in London in June 1975 when he was starring in Harvey. He was so kind so autograph my program and bid us a good night and walked by himself to his hotel.
Rick Jones I've heard Brits say he was adored when he was there playing Harvey, and every performance was sold out. Said he was approachable, kind and generous with his time and autographs. Just beloved - like here. Like everywhere.
@@TheAuntieBa That's not even the slightest bit surprising. On stage or on Johnny Carson's show, or nearly anywhere else he was seen, he was courteous, humble, showed no ego or flashy "I'm a star-ishnes!" ( I think that's a good word! ;^) ) My dad told me, in the early 1960's as we were being transferred to a US Army assignment in Germany, never lose sight of the fact that you are always an ambassador for the United States and everyone here will know you're an American at the first glance. Behave accordingly. Jimmy Stewart was one of those people who would always make the rest of us look just a bit better than we really were. A very admirable individual!!
Yes he was . In war he was a true hero . In peacetime a gentleman . A quiet man but a giant of a man . A man's man . They really don't make them like that anymore .
machia0705 - He had good traits, and his bad traits, just the same as anyone else. Not to diminish anything that he accomplished in his life, but movie stars are really just like anybody else, in that they have the same fears and worries that we all do. They have to make a living, they have to be able to put food on the table, they have to be able to pay their bills on time, they have to think about getting older and what that means for them, they have to think about their children; if they have any, and think about how they can ensure that their children will have the best future possible after they're gone, and etc. And they're subject to the same kinds of temptations that everyone else faces. The only thing that's really different about them, is the glory that is attached to what they do for a living, and the amount of money that they make in doing it.
I'm English. My parents used to record all the old black and white films at night and we would watch the following evening. I was introduced to Grainger, Bogart, Ed G Stewart, Cagney, Hudson etc, but Jimmy Stewart was always my favourite watch. A truly tremendous gentleman, war hero and unassuming man with great courage and humility. Feeling very nostalgic all of a sudden
Yes he was the last of his generation absolutely super actor. He mentioned his daughter being involved in mountain gorilla conservation, i can just imagine James Stewart owning a massive ranch in East Africa and running a wildlife conservation program.
What I love about this is the way Johnnie Carson interacts with him. Prompts him because he is older but does it so respectfully. I remember seeing Peter O'Toole on Jay Leno when Peter was this elderly, and Leno was so condescending and treating the great O'Toole like a little old man.
Too bad he's one in a million because the world needs a lot more people like Jimmy Stewart.

Me too
I am 84 y.old & how l miss all the gentlemen actors. William Holden , Gregory Peck ,and Jimmy Stewart etc . Good old days. Carole
Jimmy Stewart was the kind of individual deserving of the Medal of Freedom. A true American original and a national treasure. I never tire of his movies and Johnny was brilliant in this interview.
What a perfect example of class. Even came dressed in a suit. Respectful, funny, reverent. How i wish i lived back in his day.
Heather Marie a real great human

What you’re saying about John Dall?
@@konedog55 In the '70s I was a latchkey kid and every afternoon when I got home, the afternoon movie (when was the last time you ever heard of that?) was just coming on and featured great films like The Philadelphia Story, Casablanca and It Happened One Night. Every time the studios attempt to remake and update one of these films I get a little sick inside. What made these films great were not the stories--which were terrific themselves--but the great actors. Like James Stewart.

I have immense respect for this man.
He was a one of a kind, there well never be another like him. truly missed .
Jimmy Stewart is my all-time favorite actor. I loved the way he talked, and his style and grace is unsurpassed. A real class act. ♥️
Nobody wonders why we all Love Jimmy Stewart.
What's not to love?
Poised, relaxed, humble, gracious, funny, A Real Man Of Substance, who could easily have sat out WWII because of his fame, but chose to fly Bombers in Combat....the Full Package
One of the greatest of all time. Loved all his movies! A real gentleman.
I sure miss James Stewart, he represented the best of our country!
Jimmy Stewart was a true Classic. RIP Jimmy.
I wish these old days and people could come back. What a time to be alive.

Not all of us see this as an endorsement, but as simplified ridicule.
I could listen to him talk for hours....
It would take hours to listen.
The phrase "they don't make them like that anymore" was invented for this lovely guy.
Hollywood is extremely anti-whlTe now.
@@Student____2025__1 it is and that is sad. It should not be anti-any colour.
@@davidgibbs7232 Did you say that when it was 99% white?
@@justplainbrad7713 I don't know what that means. I do know my comment had no racist meaning what's ever. But everything now has to tarred with that brush doesn't it. Bollocks.
There is a proven scientific explanation, would you care to know what it means?
Glad I found this, so many memories. Thank you General Stewart, just for being you!
What a wonderful human being - I so miss the old days - boy the world has changed.

my child will never really understand what the America of my youth was like. I am 54 - he but 11.
The entire world has darkened. such a pity
The rest of us aka non-whites don't miss the "good ol days" when you could treat us like animals without consequence. Your good ol days was a nightmare for people of colour.
The Childfree Curly Girl
I have NEVER treated anyone with cruelty or judged them differently because their race/religion/sexuality was different from my own. I bet Jimmy Stewart was just like me. My advice is to judge white people by their character - not by the sins of people who are evil by any standard.
Great post.
Humility!!!
Thanx, Jimmy,
RIP...
Jimmy Stewart played an excellent starring role in "The Glen Miller Story", I saw the movie only once, when it was a new release and never forgot just what a good role he played after all these years.
Mr Smith, Philadelphia story. shop around the corner, Harvey, Winchester 73 rear window, vertigo, anatomy of a Murder,

Very well said!
I read he was racist
I never get tired of listening to Jimmy Stewart.
Jimmy Stewart is one of my all time favorite actors. It is always a pleasure to see him and hear him so nice and candid.
Served our country in WWII. Fine gentleman and person.
Not any actors can say that. They are too busy running down this country. Finding what is wrong. Listening to the squad.
And after the war he stayed in the reserves earning the rank of brigadier General.

I cried like a baby when Jimmy Stewart died. He was the last of the greats!
I read he was Racist.
No, I believe kirk Douglas was last of the greats dy'in at 103.
Me too....
caomhan84 I’m old enough to have seen this when it aired. Still makes me lol. One of the best 🥰. Check to see if you can find the Carson interview he did reciting a poem about his dog Blue. You will love it.
I really enjoy that Stewart spoke the same way even in the 90s, take you back to those old news reels from WWII and the 30s and 40s dialogue.
Used to sneak down silently and turn the TV down low and watch every time Jonny had Jimmy on. Class act doesn't do him justice. 👏
John
You can see the admiration and respect Johnny Carson has for Jimmy Stewart.
One of my favourite American men. Jimmy's work continues to delight me, and I often go back to watching him when I need the world straightened out.
Strategic Air Command - one of my favorite movies. But this man was the real deal. As stated in another comment, he WAS a bomber pilot, and a commander in WW2. Flew combat missions as well as led the wing. Ended up as a general in the air force (reserve?). They don't come any better than this!
Mine to. Have it recorded.
there will never be men like this again in Hollywood..a real gentleman...honorable...veteran...
+Kathleen Norris yes mam thats when men were men and women were women but they are all gone now its a shame what this world has become
There's some hope from gen Z. Their punk rock seems to be traditional family values
Kathleen Norris another time on Carson he stated his service to the country was so much more important than anything he did in Hollywood!!!
Kathleen there will never be men like this
They cannot make a movie about this man and his life because none of the actors these days understand or appreciate what (Brigadier) General Stewart did for us.
JimmycStewart is such a legend and I remember him playing on westerns and could watch him every day of the week..sensational..Jimmy has been on so many shows..thank you Jimmy..awesome days of viewing the best that there ever was.
A National Treasure, cultural icon, a hero, piece of living history, philanthropist, Favorite son, American nostalgia, classic old school gentleman, original Class act. What else do ya need. He was it. Amen.
Mr. Stewart Bless yer heart, you're Sorely missed. 💟❤

"That was after the first war..." I love listening to this, I feel like I'm listening to my grandpa (long deceased) tell stories.
I could listen to Jimmy Stewart for hours on end, he can tell such good stories. Very interesting man.

He flew 16 to 18 missions.
Author Og Mandino flew 6 missions with him. Og flew a total of 30 missions.
Russ Burkett - Most veterans don't talk about the war.
The Cowboy War was different back then compared to now.
during the shooting of the famous movie "Flight Of The Phoenix" our German actor Hardy Krüger asked Stewart about his bombarding German cities during WW II and Stewart told him better not to speak about this issue! rgds from Germany
Real heroes don't brag about their service.
Mr Carson was & is still the best interviewer ever!
Jimmy Stewart and James gagney two of my favorite actors of all time thanks for the download 👍
Jimmy Stewart...as a boy this man was an idol. He was someone I wanted to be like....I miss watching all those movies for the very first time. Sure, you can watch them again, but an old man now, I watch for what "I may have missed." Nothing beats the first time...its a real memory.
the man was class personified. i wish i could say that about anyone nowadays.
I love how Johnny interviewed. He give you spots and set you up perfectly. You don’t see this anymore.
God bless Jimmy, I just watched it's a wonderful life again, such a heartwarming film and performance.
James Stuart was and still is a great Hollywood Icon. I love so many of his movies.
All his movies no matter what role he played he was excellent
Jimmy Stewart was a national treasure. One of my favorite movies is It's a Wonderful Life.
Yeah it is a wonderful life Jimmy, and you're a wonderful human being.
jimmy is my favorite actor of all time. and his ww2 heroics cannot be understated
I love living in the past. It is where the entertainment lives!
- I spend all of my waking moments living in the past. I would cut my wrists if I lived in the present.
One thing that makes Jimmy Stuart so comical is the fact that he's always so serious!
Or maybe he had a sly why of not taking himself seriously.
Must watch is The Dean Martin Roast... Jimmy it was get.
Who the heck is Jimmy Stuart?
Princeton, Hollywood, Brigadier General....Jimmy has always had every ounce of my respect in every way.
One of the all time greats thank you Jimmy for all the memories you’ve given us .
He was way before my time but I love Jimmy Stewart. His work with Hitchcock was always outstanding, and I greatly admire the longevity of his marriage. Plus, he got married quite late so it still gives me hope for myself lol R.I.P Jimmy
I miss Jimmy Stewart....God Bless His Soul.
about 1990 my friend Kelly did a "Tour of The Stars Homes" in Hollywood and she told me it was completely boring until the driver said "Jimmy Stewart's house is on the left" and she looked and saw him on a step ladder on his front porch changing the night light...when he was probably about 80 years old!!, (about the same time as this Tonight Show appearance)...the man had some SERIOUS fortitude and an incredible sense of humour!.
I met Jimmy Stewart in London in June 1975 when he was starring in Harvey. He was so kind so autograph my program and bid us a good night and walked by himself to his hotel.
Rick Jones Nice story Rick...I played Doc Sanderson in a high school production of Harvey. Thanks for bringing that back to me....Cheers.
That had to be as cool as could be !
On stage or on Johnny Carson's show, or nearly anywhere else he was seen, he was courteous, humble, showed no ego or flashy "I'm a star-ishnes!" ( I think that's a good word! ;^) )
My dad told me, in the early 1960's as we were being transferred to a US Army assignment in Germany, never lose sight of the fact that you are always an ambassador for the United States and everyone here will know you're an American at the first glance. Behave accordingly. Jimmy Stewart was one of those people who would always make the rest of us look just a bit better than we really were. A very admirable individual!!
humble man. brave. war veteran. unassuming. talented. one of a kind. rip sir.
He was what a human being was all about.
I don't personally know anyone that can tell a story like this guy and has had such an interesting life.

Absolutely one of the best actors to ever grace Hollywood and one of my favorites as well.....

He seemed to have been such a nice man, so well loved, and such a great actor. Beloved.

Watching It’s a wonderful life and just thought I’d look up Jimmy Stewart and appreciate him for how great he was
My favorite actor. A true American hero. Cannot express my admiration for his accomplishments in film and on behalf of our nation. God bless you
Yes he was the last of his generation absolutely super actor.
I saw that and you are lying. Jay treated him with utmost respect.
