Thank you so much for this Dave. We can't get enough of this education and that is no joke either. You have been extremely helpful with so many mysteries around instrument repair and mods.

Thanks Dave you are still the Champion! Great explanation of how a guitar or Bass should work. You always helped me over the years. Big Thanks!

    Both lookers!
Just goes to show, as Dave’s said many times before, once it’s been setup properly, the only thing that may need to be adjusted is the truss rod. (Unless you have guitar gnomes %#@$*&+ with you.😁) Nothing else changes except the neck relief due to temperature and humidity changes. He has plenty of videos that show how to make the truss rod adjustments.✌️😊

The GOOCH shirt plus the NASA jacket makes me nervous. Please do not gooch NASA--space flight is difficult enough already.
Loved that natural wood body bass, just would have preferred a tortoiseshell pickguard.

I have wanted one of those really bad since the late 2019 early 2020 time period. The quality is exceptional. It seems most people don't like the color from what I have heard so many times though. Guitar Center appears to have a surplus of this model along with its red counterpart.

TBX from 0-5 is like a normal tone control. There's a detent on 5. Above 5, it disconnects the tone cap and progressively unloads the pickup, increasing output and raising the resonant frequency of the pickup. Neat trick. Doesn't need batteries. Not everyone loves it, but it is interesting.

I like it with hum buckers. All the way up is a 1000k pot. TY you can hear the difference. Not useful in the bridge with a single coil so the other pot is a 250k.. stacked. There is no downside to the tbx..

Heya Dave, watching you and a few other techs...I decided to re fret my 30 yr old Fender HM IV neck thru with stainless steel, after replacing the old floyd rose and fixing the 30 yr old emg's. It went great, I didn't even need to level the frets. 2 spots a little high but not buzzing (the spots where I fixed the two small chip out btw). HOLY that jumbo stainless makes ya flex. =D

    Thanks for the specs, Dave.
Just got an Aerodyne P-J and the !setup! from the shop was the same high strings and angled pickups laziness. They said that this new instrument did not come with hex keys because only Authorized Fender shops could make adjustments under Warranty. Gee.

Love it when people in stores have to make stuff up. Squier don't give a crap, here have some tools - truss rod gonna need a tweak after the boat ride. I do feel like all these hex keys handed out are mostly waste, though.

From what I see every workday hex keys specific to that guitar are packed in every manufacturers boxes.
Between receiving the shipment and a satisfied customer walking hopefully into their dreams outside that shop door however is a trail of hex keys and somebody preferring to make up some kind of Authorised Repair story rather than say “We lost ‘em and don’t bother me now I might miss my next sale”.

A normal pot cuts treble - these ganged pots cut treble or bass, depending on which way you turn it.

Those strings looked high to me from the start even from here via UA-camVision. The G string/high side at 7/64" is wildly high compared to my setups.

I’ve had a few Japanese fender and I really like them. The last half dozen years, I’ve been lucky with Fernandes and Burny (also part of fernandes)and they are a great choice because they are “probably” made or make fender japan.
Hey there Dave, have you ever worked on a Burny Rickenbacker copy? They seem to have ironed out the problems with certain aspects that we are aware of. I too bought a Rick brand new in ‘77 with hard earned money and got the same speech about round wound strings. I finally put a badass bridge on it but unfortunately having that bass as the only bass when we were doing 4 1/2 hours a night 5 days a week the versatility lacked and l swapped it for a P Bass and never looked back for sometime. The last ten years I’ve been looking for a deal for a Rick so if you know anyone who isn’t happy with theirs, let me know.
    hint, hint

My issue with P/J basses (I have one - a Fender Mustang) is that the single coil hums like crazy.

Hey Dave, new sub here, from Stirling, ON.
I have started doing my own setups now after 20+ years of paying someone else to do it - Thanks to a few of your videos beforehand, I started with my AM P-bass. Was curious about this angling of the pickup as well, I put in some passive EMG. The old pickup had the uneven poles and were angled when I got the bass.
What is the name of that tool you're using to measure the pickup height?
Thanks for teaching us simps a thing or two 👍

You should check out the new Fender MIJ Maui blue precision bass, as a fellow aficionado I bet you'd love it. BTW I can get mine down to 4/64" if it has a good fret-job.
