Back in 1980, I got my first P-bass--it was Olympic/arctic white and I loved it. This takes me back. Thanks for the fond memory, Dave. Merry Christmas to all.
i got one of these as my first "real" bass after cutting my teeth on a squier bronco. popped in some emg geezer butler pickups and now she rips. merry christmas, dave.
Hi Dave hope you don't mind but this just popped in my head out here in my shop.Like a song that you have to write down or you forget it.Here goes... T'was the night before Christmas and Dave in his shop, working his magic, only finished would stop. Upon the wall, files, tools, hammers and all, placed neatly, when summoned would meet the call. To a PJ, Strat,Tele,Acoustic in need, our bespeckled friend applied the creed, "It comes in broken and lies on the bench, to see where we are and where to go hence." Lights, cameras, t-shirts and beer make him jolly and help fix that sneer. For now the job's done and with a gleam in his eye he say's "Be good to each other and thanks for stopping by."
I use a Hosco TL-FE2 (for 2 mm width frets) which I use for crowning and fret end dressing. It also has a safe edge for rounding the fret bevels. I also use it with the safe edge to take the sharpness off nut with cutting a new bone nut.
Merry Christmas, Dave. You've helped me with tricks of the trade for many years and choice of tools that I did not know existed. May 2023 be a great year for you, your patrons and all your viewers. Peace be with you all.
Dr Dave's 'ere again... ;) Top channel ....and helped me out loads in my first year of doing me own servicing and setups. All the best for '23 in advance from England (2023... really!!!?? Jeeeeez!) and keep 'em coming dude :)
Dave, thanks for all the videos - chances are you don't know how much they're appreciated. Merry Christmas and when it comes a hapoy and healthy new year to you and yours.
Nadolig Llawen from Wales. Thanks for all the videos Dave. I hope your ear heals quickly, and everything is OK. Have a happy, healthy new year, and we all look forward to seeing you again in 2023
I had this same bass layout only it was a "Stinger" by Martin in 1986 (Jackson knockoff)...Loved the sound I got from it. Wish I still had it but, 15 "pro" basses later and collected, just a memory now! :) Thnx Dave! Merry Christmas all!!! 🎄
I have this exact same bass.Recently changed out the pickups, pots, bridge, jack, and nut and gave it a fret job. Fun project and plays great. Traded an old squier jazz bass for it.
Hi Dave, I use nothing but 3 fret erasers for all my fret polishing/dressing. I use a thick rough cloth with a little windex sprayed on it to clean the erasers after each use by rubbing the dirty sides/ends/edges/grooves till erasers are clean as they were new. To get the grooves that appear over time on sides that appear with lots of use, i hang same cloth over edge of my workstation and drag erasers along the sharp edge cleaning the inside of the grooves in eraser. Thanks for all the tips and hope that helps your followers as well who use fret erasers.
Im with you Dave on the wording setup! As a part time repair/setup guy ( almost 30 years now ) I price a setup between £75 to £200 depending on if its a simple everything works setup to cutting down saddles or re slotting nuts to full neck jobs! Most of my work is for gigging musicians so I get guitars that a beat up lol. Happy Christmas and all the best for the new year,!
I got a new Fender Mexican p-bass in 2017 and the fret ends were like razors, the first fret height was something crazy like 25 thou and there was dried glue the entire length of the neck where they didn’t wipe off the excess when they glued on the finger board. This was a FENDER, not a squire. It took a lot of work to get it to play comfortably. Not sure if all the Mexican basses are like that or if I just got a lemon.
I’ve always been a Fender guy. I now own two Squires, both are 40th anniversary models, a P and a J, both are excellent quality and as good as any MIM models and some entry level US ones. Just amazed! Your videos have taught me so much and truly funny sometimes.
I have the same issue with the volume knobs on my G&L SB-2T: when I run the treble pot full up, the volume decreases- while I have the bridge pickup full on. I can get some real good blends as long as I don't torque up that bridge pickup all the way. And the tone knob is a must! I can go from an upright sound to an aggressive heavy rock tone with a spin.
I have some nice guitars n basses,Fenders and even a Gibson. I really like my Squires they are cheap, sound good and you can really get them nice with a little work. Its less stressful to bring a squire than a Fender to a rowdy jam lol
HAHA @ 1 LAST TIME and I am sorry to hear about a squeal due to your ear. I am no stranger to painful bodily repairs. Hope you are 100% from here on out.
Dave. I hope you read this. Try after try, I finally got through the GGBO firewall and got my raffle tickets. I did find when I got in that I already had 4 tickets in my "basket". I made it 8 and placed the order. Hope I win. I love the Tele.
Take care of that ear and yourself there buddy! Have a fantastic holiday with friends and family! Cheers! See you when you return! Thank you for another incredible year of videos ❤️
Hey Dave I watched one of your videos where you were putting a small block in the back of a Stratocaster guitar with a tremolo. What is the size of the block. You we’re doing the string height & intonation first then you were adjusting the springs & removing the block.
Happy holidays Dave and to all the low enders out there ✌🏻 I'm a sucker for a Squier PJ but always move them on after remembering the output drops with both Vs cranked. Perhaps one day I'll find a 'nice' one and switch in superior electronics.
Very nice, I found a Starcaster P bass by Fender at a pawn shop that needed strings, the A string will not stay in the nut it rids above it. Is nut too shallow or is the string too high? I like the action it has the Telecaster "barrel" type bridge. Ideas and to all a good night.
@@DavesWorldofFunStuff If you sir are not a politician you should be. I have a real Luther in my town 2nd generation, a Martin official repairwoman might help. Merry achristmas
Happy holidays, I was searching for good tech in Toronto and heard alot of good things about you, i would like to set up my bass, how can I contwct you?
I'm curious why you set bass strings all to the same height? I have never seen a factory spec for a bass written that way nor have I seen a bass builder do it that way. You don't set up guitars like that. I'm not saying you're wrong, just curious as to why you set them up that way.
They should have frozen it with spray before poking a needle in your ear. As my surgeon always says "This is going to hurt you a lot more than it will hurt me"
I have a MIJ Squier precision bass I bought in 1988 in Olympic white which has turned a lovely shade of yellow. I wouldn't take a gold monkey for it.
I know what you mean! I have a ‘85 MIJ Squier Strat that’s now yella. Love it!!!
Merry Christmas Dave! Thanks for everything throughout the year! We're lucky to have you

I have one of these and did some mods. New high mass bridge, new pots and cap and two of my own pickups.

Is that the Mike Tyson ear job, like Evander Holyfield received. Well it makes a good story.
