Texas to Chicago (Almost) | De-ice Failure and Diversion

- After departing Gladewater, TX, we encounter moderate ice as we reach our cruise altitude and discover that the de-ice boots aren’t working. Although we’re in the clear, more ice is expected during the descent into O’Hare so we make an unscheduled trip to Olathe to see Kevin Mead and have the boots checked out.
As someone who is around very large equipment for work... I can tell you.. It never ceases to amaze me... that a 15 cent part, or at least a very small one, can stop million dollar equipment. Our mothers were right... little things matter.
hawkdsl FACTS!!
Example , a 6.00 bearing killed the turbine car at Indy costing it an easy win .
@@onfin3al6 I remember that.
My grandfather and great uncle were the first to ever pick up a Malibu from the factory! Always loved these.
Loved the line...”I’ve done dumb and I’ve learned”
Kory ~ super video demonstrating sound decision making, not only to divert, but in not telling Kerry about the boots right away. No need to concern her at that point - I'm afraid that I would have blurted it out when the boots did not deploy! Well done, and nice tie.
I'm a guy in my mid-thirties obsessed with general aviation. We make okay money but right now spend it on the little ones. Thank you so much for sharing every little bit that you have shared. Maybe in two years or maybe in 12 years I will be pursuing my pilot's license, and videos like this give me valuable insight into minutiae that can be easily overlooked another videos. Thank you for taking the time to create this content, it is truly awesome.
Thank you Seth! Your priorities are well in order and I commend you for that. I hope that you do earn your PPL someday and are able to enjoy it with your family.
As always, a great example on how to handle an adverse situation with calm and poise.
Hi guys, hope you are all healthy and happy. I really miss your videos and keeping up with Katie and your wife's flying. If this shows up on notifications, I think all your followers would love to know how you are doing. Thanks, Jim Sherrow. Lake Pomme de Terre in Missouri.
Hi Jim and thanks for the comment. We're all doing well although not flying quite as much anymore. We wish you and your family a Happy New Year!
@@MalibuFlyer So glad to hear you are all doing well. I never had the funds to obtain a ppl but did get some instructor time back in the 80's and had a good friend that owned a Piper Cherokee. I owned sailboats through the years and had to give it up when my back gave it up. I had a 25' Catalina for many years. Inland lake sailing keeps you real busy. I am curious how your Bahamas sailing vacation went and are you still sailing?
Happy New Year and God Bless you.
Glad to see very responsible decision-making, gotta set a good example!
Long but awesome video. You are a very good pilot and you also do great with your camera work. This was a nice lesson for me. I am a VFR private pilot aiming for my IFR certification. This video is pure motivation to start IFR training ASAP.
Good decision on the icing problem. "I have done dumb and learned from it", well don't we all, the survivors that is.
Kory, I love your precise thinking on diverting early. It sure does beat the hurry up get there syndrome where you are a statistic on flight accident investigation. Love the videos. Congratulations to your daughter on a great accomplishment. Good luck to her in all she does.
Lucky you had the flexibility to change your plans. Love your videos - especially getting to see the challenges and complex ATC situations.
Well Done! Your camera angle from the wing just incredible.
Great ADM. I've been following this channel for a while and I've always been impressed with the professionalism, the radio communication and the ADM. The Malibu or the TBM would be a dream to fly. Blue skies and happy flying.
I subscribed many months ago. First comment. Love the channel. Live in Phoenix area and fully rated pilot for 40 years. Great family and educational content. Maybe our paths will cross one day on the ramp.
Excellent decision, no hesitation, when you are dealing with ice never wait jut get down
Wow, Kory. Another great video. I look forward to your channel. Please keep it up. On this one, seeing how you manage your decision to divert and then watching your IMC penetration to land is very instructive.
Yet another awesome video ... sharing your decision process help many other pilots.
Thank you for sharing! New instrument pilot here. Great to observe your decision making process and diagnosis of the problem.
Congratulations on getting your IR!
@@MalibuFlyer what headset is your wife wearing at 1:30? Would like to check that out for my wife.
@@marcocarlos7788 She has the Flex by Clarity Aloft and loves them
Thanks for that video! I’m a 63 year old student pilot going for my PPL, and videos like this are great inspiration to me, specially how you showed (I think) exceptional situational awareness, made excellent decisions. I didn’t see if there was a checklist, but you tried all the logical and possible checks while in the air for troubleshooting the deicing boots, and then just calmly accepted that they weren’t going to work and worked the problem, all with calm and even enthusiasm.
Also, your video editing was great. I’m used to steam gauges, so I learned a little about glass panels because you showed it so well when appropriate, and had a lot of different camera cuts.
Mainly though, I’m not schooled on IFR, and was wondering if, in the beginning before problems were you flying IFR and on a flight plan? I ask because I’m not sure how that works and before I realized you were IFR rated, was shocked at how casually you were flying in the clouds. We VFR students and pilots get that “you have about 90 seconds before you spin” etc. but I wasn’t sure if when IFR rated but flying VFR then hit clouds if you just hold course, etc or declare to ATC that you are switching to IFR?
Anyway, great job! Going to watch more of your videos now. Thanks!
shader26 good observation. Yes, if there is an emergency checklist covering this, it absolutely should be used. And yes, he was on an IFR flight plan. That sequence on the ground at the very beginning was picking up his IFR clearance.
Great Video,s and I love it how you talk through your set up and apr . thanks so much and God Bless
OJC is my home base. Enjoyed watching you land there. Great decision making. Enjoy watching your videos!
We fly out of KAAO, been to OJC a couple times, once to meet up with Kory during his engine replacement!
Thoroughly enjoyed the video. Thanks for sharing. From an expat in Ireland. Safe travels my friend.
Really awesome that Kevin had you fixed in just a few minutes, or at least diagnosed and found the problem. As to your decision making, spot on. Better safe than sorry, and there's nothing that requires that much attention that you get yourself killed doing it.
great video. could not stop watching until last second. awesome !
Great job keeping your cool! Also good decision making too! Im glad your fix was free and quick.
Very amusing to spot my car in the parking lot at KOJC there. Stumbled across your video in my recommended videos section. I shall be listening for your tail number in the future at work!
Hey Malibu Flyer & co pilot! What a great video. You really kept your cool through it all. Your decision to land at KOJC was a smart move. Your Malibu with all the latest avionics may be a expensive move, but another smart move. I used to live just to the east of the airport 10 years ago or so. I obtained my private, instrument & commercial at that airport. I had a A36 Bonanza when I obtained my commercial certificate. I learned so much about that Bonanza when in training. I appreciate you & your wife sharing your Malibu experiences. Stay safe & keep the videos coming!
Great decision making and staying calm while trouble shooting!
First time viewing your channel nice airplane love the avionics. Congratulations to your daughter on her first solo.
Thank you Andy. Welcome!
First time watching your videos, I am a private pilot and really enjoyed it. Great, sensible decision making without any fuss. I loved it. Also time to get your wife a pair of in ear headphone lol - subscribed.
Superb video.
Makes my own IFR antics seem pathetic!
Love the “done dumb and learnt from that” - me too.
Wow, after reviewing your De-Ice failure it brought back memories of me flying a P-210 over PHX from Concord, CA to Tucson one April day and I did not like not having deice boots not working for sure! Good call on your turn around to Kansas where the air was warmer. LOVE your videos and I learn a lot from them. Keep up the great work and be safe out there flying as I know you are. Love the Malibu!
Excellent educational video . Another reminder of staying ahead of the airplane or "projecting ahead". It's amusing how teamwork and rhythm works with ATC. There is symmetry there between pilots and ATC. Funny. Couple of times ATC missed that queue to come up and assist, but they were just a nanosecond behind. Great video. Kudos to your daughter.
Great video. My wife and I used to live about 2 miles north of Jo. Co. Executive and you overflew our old house. Cool to see the perspective from the air, as I've watched hundreds of planes approaching the airport from the ground. Glad you made it safely.
GREAT video, perfect ADM, and solid airmanship. well done. thanks for sharing.
Good call on diverting. I have been watching airplane accidents on youtube to learn from others and decision making delay in taking action during icing conditions seems to be a problem.
Excellent video, thank you! So glad that you and your family made it safely.
Thanks for sharing
Beautiful journey. I felt as if I was on the plane with you. Good share and generous. Thank you both!
You two clean up well. Safe travels.
Very important to test on the ground all equipment, especially all your ice protection ones flying in bad weather.Great learning experience for you mate.
While working at the hospital this evening during down time watching your videos, I switched over to flightaware and noticed you flying to 18TE on a late Sunday evening....
You make great use/work of that aircraft.
Bill
"I've done dumb, I've learned from dumb" That should be on a tee shirt :)
Great video! Kerry seemed to stay really calm through the entire incident. Sometimes hardest for the one who isn’t in control of anything to remain relaxed!
Thank you. I opted to deal with the situation rather than discuss it if you know what I mean... She wasn’t aware of the boots not working until after I made the decision to divert.
@@MalibuFlyer I enjoyed the video and apologize in advance, I didn't see where you commented as to what did you find wrong with the boots? Always trying to learn, even though I only fly my recliner!
@@warrenpierce8526 No problem at all. You had to wait till the very end 32:04. It was a broken wire.
You since of urgency and decision making was superb! I've never flown GA and the horror stories (i.e. icing, VFR to IMC, single enginge failure, stalls, etc.) keep me away from GA. Thanks for the content!
I missed seeing the vídeo of your daugther's solo. Congrats from Brazil, South América.!!
Nicely done 👍🏻✈️🙏
Another great video!
I love your channel. I dream to be able to do this with my family on a M350 and travel together.
Great flight many thanks for sharing cheers
Great video. You're beyond blessed!
Congrats on future pilot on First Solo. This presentation is outstanding. i have learned from this video.
Excellent video with good sound judgment. Keep them coming!
Great video. Awesome ADM. One point that may have kept you clear of the wx. You took a heading of 010 to keep you clear which looking at the map and the HSI should've been just good enough. However it looks like you had a pretty stiff left quartering tailwind from the SW pushing you into the wx. A 360 or even 355 would likely have worked better imho. Unless I misread something. All in a rock solid job.
Great video. Very well put together. You gave me some ideas on how to make my videos better.
Great ADM!!!!! and Looking SHARP!!!!
Good job, keeping your cool (no pun intended)...
I knew the outcome and I was still on the edge of my seat!!
I don't think I would have been that calm!
The Good Lord had HIS hand on this flight...
Excellent teamwork. Thanks for top IFR lesson for free!
WE NEED MORE VIDEOS!!!!!!! (of couse not in this pandemic but I was scrolling through your channel wanting more and I already watched all of your videos) 😂 😂 😂 Keep up the GREAT work!
Thanks for sharing and explaining or vocalizing your thought process as you got into ice and what you did to get out as well as your procedures with the new avionics. Congratulations to your daughter, and she had 95% wow. When should we expect the PIC on the Malibu Flyer?
Thank you Steve. Her check ride is this Saturday!
I literally live next to (and fly out of) KOJC. In fact, I could see my house on your approach. What a small aviation world. Beautiful airplane.
Great cockpit work, aviate, navigate, communicate. Subscribed & following.
Great flight lots of learning this video
Yup, the controller dropped you. Great management of the ice situation. God bless.
Absolutely excellent video and decision making. I hate click bait titles but I feel like you may have undersold this title, anyone who flies should watch this.
Great video. I watched it all, and I have a short attention span. I hope you realize how lucky you are, on a few levels. Fly safe!
Congrats on unsupervised flight! You two make one heck of a team!
Greeting from KCRP and South Texas Flying Club as well as your newest Subscriber. I informed my husband this evening that I found my newest airplane. He asked what is it? I said a Piper Malibu. He said, is that a twin? I said no. He said Okay. haha.. Guess what I'm in the market for!? Thanks for all the great content. I've been watching your videos for some hours now straight through.
Can't wait to see the video of her passing her checkride
Great decision - better safe then sorry. Ice isn't anything to mess with. Hope the family and yourself are doing fine during these trying times. God Bless and be safe. 'Spin'
"I've done dumb and I've learned from dumb" at about 20:50. I love it... Great video showing timely decision making. Thanks.
I love taking off when it’s humid. The vortices off the prop look cool.
I love you videos. Wish they were posted more often.
You are always such a Pro! Really enjoy your videos!
Used a lot of available runway on the initial takeoff .
Every bit of it. Given the weather on both ends, I opted for max gross fuel to give us plenty of margin.
@@MalibuFlyer I started to get nervous . . . from the safety of my office chair. :)
So did my wife. She jumped up to make sure we cleared the trees. I’ve made that departure from 14 at max gross many times but will never do it in the summer...
Malibu Flyer ha! I had to pause the video and look up runway length on ForeFlight. Then came back to see your wife get light in the seat, so I had to check comments before watching the rest of it! My couch got a little uneasy as well! You should tell your wife you have to upgrade to a turboprop.😄😄. Finished it now. Nice break from honey-do’s in the yard and thinking about quarantine. Another great video. I always learn a lot, and very entertaining. Thanks
Was that the stall horn on rotation? Probably not but def heard a faint “horn” sound. Great video as always!
Very good ADM . At 29:29 The side view show no nose gear out. 😀
Whoops! Looks like my sync is a bit off :)
Malibu Flyer no problem, Great video.
I'm more impressed you did a pre-flight in that weather and kept your white shirt and tie in pristine condition.
Great video as usual. I really like your airplane. My base is Gladewater 07F. Cheap gas. You seem to come through 07F every so often. Maybe the gas! Anyway, I have panel envy. I have flown the Malibu a couple of times a few years ago. I remember it being a little tight to get into the cockpit, but once settled in very comfortable and a great airplane to fly. I would like to lose 30 pounds, not contract COVID 19, keep my business afloat, and then buy me a PA-46!
Sounds like a great plan to me! I need to lose at least 40 though. You’ll never see me getting in/out in one of these videos. It isn’t pretty.
Thanks, Looking Quite Snazzy There Mr M Flyer.
I spent many thousands chasing the same problem, replaced both Vacuum pumps and the pressure valve($$$). Turns out a ground wire had not been connected when my engine was replaced after my engine failure. I am sure Kevin could have figured it out in 10 minutes but he had not opened his shop yet. My plane is there in annual now.
Hi Eric. It was the same wire that broke on mine... On my last annual, he found about 10 things within the first 5 minutes of looking at it. He knows right where to look that's for sure.
mike from iowa--i have been riding in the malibu with you and i expect i will get a bill for av gas from you--from a bonanza junkie and cessna 310 i must say i am very impressed with the malibu and your pilotage seems flawless
great video, well done. Looking forward to seeing the video into the Phoenix valley!
Another great video, and not doing dumb!!
Good thing Kevin Mead is around, he has provided excellent service to innumerable PA 46 owners. Good decision to not press on to ORD but get the issue fixed.
One thing that concerns me...... at 15:38, you show a shot of the deice panel. Everything is turned off, this includes pitot heat and stall warning heat. That is a potentially dangerous configuration, particularly when you have just flown thru icing conditions. As you are undoubtedly aware there were a number of in-flight Malibu and Mirage breakups in the 1989-1990 time frame, I think a total of six fatal accidents, and one common theme among them were people flying around in IMC with their pitot heat off, losing airspeed indications, and getting themselves into spiral dives [or allowing their autopilot to do the favor for them], overstressing the aircraft, and suffering an in-flight breakup. End of story. And....if you have ice on the leading edges you can easily have ice on the stall warning vane......
I realize that at the time you shot the image of the deice group you were in clear air but at the very least I strongly encourage you to do what many seasoned PA46 instructors teach and that is turn on pitot heat when you enter the runway environment and turn it off after you land. Yes, even in clear air, and yes on every flight. Good habit to get into.
This is standard in the pressurized turbine world and the pressurized pistons should be treated the same way, they operate in the same flight environment.
Lastly...full flaps with any possibility of ice remaining on the wings/horizontal stabilizer can also result in a nasty surprise of the unrecoverable kind...check you PA46 POH for recommended flap settings if landing with contaminated flying surfaces......
Great flight Kory!
Thank you sir! Let’s head to breakfast at CGZ when this is all over
Love all your videos, thank you so much !
A prop filter? How cool! Great video.
Heard ya on the radio yesterday at Coolidge! I was on my instrument stage check or else I would have said hi!
Thanks for the comment. I hope your stage check went well!
Guess I'll add that to the before departure checklist too!
Nice flight. Thanks for the ride along!
Good job, Kory.
Excellent video. You're an excellent pilot.
Gladewater is a nice little airport. Flew out of there a couple times and visit whenever I'm in town.
I am not a pilot only enthusiast but I thought that the take off run was long. plenty of excitement with the icing problem and with your experience it was handled great.
Be safe in these challenging times.
At about 29:00 you tell us you are gear down, then at about 29:30, we see your airplane in a clean configuration. You had me worried. Nice video.
Good eye! My wing camera was out of sync.
Crossing Texas from west to east I was IFR on top . After requesting radar vectors to the localizer I was dropped in the clouds , about 30 minutes later I lined up on the outer marker and was covered in ice . As I approached the inner marker I was clear of clouds at about 600 FT. and on center . There was no flare , just a plant . The 172 was covered nose to tail in ice .
Really enjoy your videos. I got my Pvt at Falcon back in 1985. The Red Mtn scenery brings back memories.
I live in Phoenix and currently not active. Im considering re entering the GA world. Was looking at A36 but you have gotten my interest up on the PA46! Love to have coffee sometime if ever able?
Glad you got down safely. Good diversion.
Really enjoy watching your videos. I have long considered the PA-46 550 or a Vitatoe P210. Currently fly a 210 with a IO550p upgrade. I had some fun with the AOPA comparing the Bonanza vs Centurion a few years back. I would love to see a flyoff between the PA-46 550 and the Vitatoe P210.
Loved this flight leg
