    I am not a pilot just a 50-year-old aviation enthusiast- I am always so impressed when pilots get to minimums and out of the heavens the runway shows up right in front of you I love it.

      Yes, it's impressive. What's more impressive is a GCA (ground-controlled approach).
      I used to practice those in a helicopter in the military. You have the glidescope on the panel but you basically follow the controller's talkdown. I was always impressed at the end and you look out of the cockpit and you're right over the numbers. Great work on the controller's part.
      By the way, you would normally not take it down that far without a co-pilot.

    Really helpful and interesting video as a fellow pilot who flies on instruments but is out of practice. One question: Considering the cloud base took you right to minimums, how long would a missed approach have taken and would you have come around and tried again, or flown to an alternate>? I ask because it looks as though you were way low on fuel, but I'm not certain.

    Not sure how much fuel you had for the quick trip for cheap fuel, but with the wide swath of low IFR conditions, was that a smart decision for a few bucks of savings? If it were me, I would have paid the extra at the departure airport, saved some extra time on the long trip, and perhaps enjoyed a bit of extra safety. We are flying expensive PA-46s to begin with, so trying to save on fuel seems counter-intuitive.

    • @rdawgz866
      @rdawgz866 3 роки тому +2

      I agree, in those conditions (though safe for his plane) no reason to do an extra landing to save $75

    • @malibujack4852
      @malibujack4852 3 роки тому +4

      @@rdawgz866, yes, Malibu’s are safe (I own one myself). But, assuming he didn’t have a lot of fuel (hence the trip to buy cheaper fuel to fill the tanks for a long trip home), the safety aspect would entail not having a lot of options if he had to go missed considering the widespread low IFR conditions. Seems to be unnecessary risk for a savings of a few dollars which would have been further offset by the extra fuel burn (Malibu’s burn 35-38 gph in the climb). All of that extra time and effort combined with the increased risk for a few dollars would not be worth it to me (especially with my family on board).

    • @rdawgz866
      @rdawgz866 3 роки тому +3

      @@malibujack4852 he is obviously a proficient pilot but its just the unnecessary extra risk thsts an issue. I fly a Cirrus SR22, also very capable cross country aircraft. I would have no problem shooting an approach to 200 or so over minimums with my family on board. But I would not take off into 400ovc with less than 30 gallons of fuel, then approach to minimums to save $75 or to support a local business. Had he gone missed I am not even sure if he had a close enough adequate alternate.

    • @malibujack4852
      @malibujack4852 3 роки тому +2

      @@rdawgz866 that’s my point exactly. I have no issue shooting low approaches either. But I have had to go missed on more than one occasion after shooting an approach to 200 and a half mile vis, and having enough fuel to get me to a place to make it in is of great importance. Under those conditions, I always flight plan for having more than 2 hours of fuel at destination. I do love his videos and he appears to be a safe pilot, so I’m sure he had considered the risks. Btw, love the Cirrus also. I remember how they started in the experimental ranks. I built and own a composite Velocity; another great airplane. Cheers!
