    turning GL into Friday Night Lights was the single stupidest decision in the history of daytime. And yes, I am counting Erica's unabortion on AMC in that equation.

    This is horrible. For one thing Reva and Cassie had the best connection as sisters and I’m not sure who’s idea it was to destroy their closeness. Looking back when the character of Cassie came on to the show, she would’ve never been with Josh and would’ve always had her sisters back. Also the new way of filming is laughable. Hated the show had to come to this point. Smh

      I stopped watching before the new Cassie took over. I think that they probably changed the Cassie character because they had a different writer and actress. Paul Rauch was writing when Laura Wright was Cassie and rumor had it that she was one, of his favorites, and that's why she got things her way (a lot of screen time, good story lines where she was always the heroine). I heard that the Cassie character changed after both left. I stopped watching because I was tired, of her, and Reva hogging the screen.

    This new production model (this really killed the show) for GL was horrible. This was a very bad idea, I mean, what were they thinking or smoking for that matter? I know they were trying to go for that so-called "reality show" or realistic feel, but this just didn't work, an epic fail on all levels. You can't change a soap opera format that was successful over the past 35 years to this cam recorder low budget stuff. This doesn't even feel or look like a soap opera anymore, there's nothing dramatic such as the instrumental back ground music, the up close shots of the actors and the emotion that comes with the drama of daytime storytelling. This entire format looks cheap, very empty and forces the actors to be stiff, to the point the entire cast looks like they're constantly reading cue cards from the director.

      @Oakdalian 9 років тому +9

      You're right about not changing too drastically, though I think the only glaring issue is how cheap everything looks. The sets are claustrophobic and location scouts didn't exactly choose the most scenic outdoor spots in Peapack. So the camera work is jittery and has a reality feel to it, let alone with a lesser visual quality. It's a shame but the budget was probably gutted at this point. Lisa Brown gave an interview for the finale and stated that actors were wearing their own clothes. The idea of trying to make Springfield a relatable community is great, but the production needs way more resources to pull that off.

      I agree 100% with you, MrJuly1990ish and I will never forget how upset and shocked I was when this format began. After 15 years of being the most hardcore, madly in love with GL superfan and never missing an episode if I could help it, I could barely hang on during it's final year-plus. I mean, I was so in love and devoted to GL that I recall when I was in my early 20s back in the early 2000s and I'd go on Spring Break or with my BFF to Chicago from where I was living then (in Nashville) and this was before DVRs (I never had a Tivo)...I vividly remember making certain that I still stopped everything to watch Guiding Light! In Chicago for a Thanksgiving holiday, I was staying in a ritzy downtown hotel and I actually called the local CBS affiliate to learn what time GL aired there (it's time slot was rather early in the morning hours in Chicago, vs. the 2pm time slot it had long been down South). No other show has been as important to me. No other show has felt like family to me...not like GL. I loved this show and the actors meant the world to me (they still do). Many would call me a bit "extreme" for being such a fan, but I feel that my fellow GL fans will understand what I'm expressing. So, when the show went to shreds in the last couple of years, it was more than heartbreaking for me. I felt as though I'd lost something so precious in my life and yet, I also felt as though I was being disloyal when I started watching General Hospital and I'd catch an episode here and there of GL. The show also lost so many of it's best cast members. It was SO hard to see go Laura Wright, Beth Ehlers, Ricky Paull Goldin, Tom Pelphrey (to name a few).
      Wow...I could just go on and on about GL...about the "good 'ole days" and about the bad ones, too. Even now, I miss the show and I wish that I could see every episode from the mid 90s onward. I'd actually pay money to see those episodes in order and organized in a way that's not so confusing as trying to watch bits and pieces of GL here on youtube (though I am very grateful to the many who've taken the time and effort to upload the scenes and episodes that are available here).

      My issue was that they then started covering up bad audio with extended music video montages. (Similar to how almost ALL drama series's have been done since Friday Night Lights started this stupid and lazy trope.) Took you right out of the show. That and turning Springfield into a small hick town after decades of it being a decent sized city with skyscrapers and a healthy corporate sector. Turning it into Gilmore Girls/Friday Night Lights was a massive continuity screw up and destroyed the show.

    I think the show eventually found its footing with the new shooting model. The shaky camera and awkward closeups were gone and the writing was decent. I thought the show was good toward the end....with what limited resources they had to work with.

      I would have preferred for GL to be cancelled before they had a chance to switch to this stupid “shaky cam” production style. I couldn’t watch the show again after the switch because they constant shaking made me nauseous. GL didn’t look like a soap opera anymore at this point. It looked more like a cheesy parody of an obscure reality show.

    This format change was terrible! It sucked the life out of the show. The pacing and mood and the interactions are completely different. This doesn't feel like a soap opera at all. They should've just ended the show instead of doing this.

      I completely agree. This was too much of a low-budget reality show feel. Also, it is a shame that the last decade of the show focused too much on the mob and San Cristobel along with unbelievably hokey stories. GL should have first and foremost focused on multi-generational stories involving the Bauers, Spauldings, Marlers, and Thorpes. Even if recasts were needed, GL should have brought back characters like Phillip, Mindy, Hope, and MIke.

    The last episode I watched was when Cassie "sleeps" Jonathan so that Reva would see how horrible he was!!!!! Not only that they turned Philip into a crazy nut case, had him shot by his own father. If that wasn't enough, Alan then steals Olivia's daughter Emma by having Olivia committed. It's like Alan took over where Philip left off!!!! I know that Philip does come back, but still they completely ruined his character. I was watching episodes from another UA-cam channel but I just couldn't stomach anymore after the whole Jonathan fiasco. Also they killed off a beloved character Richard then bring him back as a completely different character but had him impersonate Richard with Dinah!!!!!

    This was the beginning of the end of Guiding Light. Just terrible. I am glad ATWT did not go that route and just ended. GL should have done the same. Could these shows no come back as reboot now on CBS all Access or Hulu, etc..?

      It would have to be up to Procter & Gamble to revive either ATWT or GL, and I’m sure if they saw any value in bringing them back they would have done it by now.

      Yes. Hurt sara because she was hurt. She was unstable too. She lost custody of sara when Tammy was still alive because she left her in a car that then got stolen because she put wanting jonathan above her daughter's safety.
