- Here at Caravan Of Garbage industries there is one hard and fast rule. Zorro is the best. And arguably the pinnacle of Zorro (of which there are many) in the 1998 action adventure romance triumph The Mask Of Zorro starring Antonio Banderas, Anthony Hopkins and Catherine Zeta-Jones directed by Martin Campbell. Great movie. Good Zorro-ing

#Zorro
The passion and love that James talks about Zorro is only rivaled by the way he talks about the Souvlaki Hut Gorilla Commercial and being a father.
“As a father…”
@@Finamajig "I 'read' the book!"
@928 "Hey what book ya reading there?"
"50 Ways to Karate Chop Your Neck *brother*"
Or how he hates Radiohead.
*and ghostbusters 2
James famously had the reverse Batman origin of seeing a Zorro movie as a child and having a great time
This actually explains a lot.
That’s how he found his parents too
He had a great time!!
The mental image of young Robbat Battinbat watching this movie before his folks get shot is absolutely hilarious
We need Battinbat Batman Vs Banderas Zorro
Just imagining his little Bruce Wayne on a leash like that meme rriiiiiiiight before Crime Alley
This is legit one of my favourite action movies of all time. I think from the writing to the acting, the direction, the action sequences, the score, costumes, sound all of that are just fantastic
Mask of Zorro is not just my top Action movie, it is my favourite film of all time. Like you said, each time I watch it again, I'm mesmerized by how every element ( from the cast, to the production design) is working together like clockwork to perfection.
Very vigorous
Also CZJ, good lord...
Not enough people know how great this movie is! Easily one of the best action films ever and also helped lead to the Pirates of the Carribean series (even has some of the same writers).
@@jambler15That's a fun fact. I can kind of see the swashbuckling swordplay and snappy dialogue parallel to this movie.
This movie is responsible for me thinking that Catherine Zeta-Jones was latina for most of my youth
She has the fiery energy and the look in her eyes.
I… still thought that
Welsh people are easily the most Spanish looking Brits.
@@luckyspurs Genetically there's a link. During the last ice age there was a human outpost in what we now call Basque country, in the north of Spain, and as Europe warmed people started migrating north to England and Ireland. Subsequent invasions of England by Romans and Germans drove these people (the "Celts") to the western periphery, most notably Wales.
And Anthony Hopkins is Welsh too, so I'd say this movie is thoroughly covered as far as not offending twitter warriors.
@@ThreadBombthe Basques aren't Celtic. Or at least, their language isn't. There did used to be celts/gauls all over western Europe, don't remember off the top of my head how much they were in Iberia
I JUST need the editors to know how much I appreciated that sly spin on “Here’s the Thing”
I lost my shit when I saw that
Thought we wouldn't notice but we did
I understood that reference... @@Perfefernefer
help, i feel left out
@@doctaflo they showed Ebon Moss-Bachrach, who will be playing the Thing in the new Fantastic Four movie 4:18
I will listen to hours of James talking about Zorro
Same. It was much more entertaining than I would've thought beforehand.
It is now my workout motivation soundtrack.
Same but swap Zorro for 80's VFL
My favorite part is when Zorro was with my dad in the Amazon researching boot-wearing felines….
...right before he had a realistic depiction of a panic attack
Engagement!!
Wait. Does that make you Magic Baby Zorro?
...and then he shot him
And then he Zorroed all over those felines
“Should we start a riot?
Ya.
Let’s start a riot.
There’s no one here”
😂got me
that broke me too
In the seventies, we had toy swords with chalk on the tip to make the mark of Zorro.
In Portugal that "advanced technology" only arrived in the 90's 😅
The evolution of the "Here's the thing" visual gag into just showing Ebon Moss-Bachrach was brilliant.
Well done Ben and/or Lawrence great work as always
Surprised to hear how much James hated this film, glad good old Nick "I love Zorro" Mason was there to straighten him out
Should we riot?
. yes. and we shall.
Engagement!
Exactly as it should be
@@MichaelTrice-ratopsFOR LIBERTY
The horse stable scenes were shot in my uncle's candle-making factory in Mexico. When my parents told me this at 9 years old it was the coolest thing ever. At 23 it's still the coolest thing. I did grow up thinking Sir Anthony Hopkins and Catherine Zeta Jones were hispanic, but otherwise one of my favorite movies of all time. Anthony De La Hopkins had me rollin and Baby Zoro would make a fire kids show like baby looney tunes
So you were 9 in 1998 and just 23 years old 26 years later?
Something does not compute.
i didn't see it on release night i saw it on tv years later@@samuelperezgarcia
So James LOVES Zorro.
Zorro means Fox in Spanish.
James loves foxes.
James loves Maid Marion confirmed.
I mean, who doesn't love Maid Marion?
@@RobbieB2606 Definitely not Mason
I genuinely believed when i was younger that that was where the phrase "foxy" came from
I guess we all learned to love Zorro in today’s episode.
always did always will, although Robin Hood was first Zorro will forever have a place in my heart.
This is the purest and best definition of a perfect swashbuckling adventure film. Really underrated in modern pop culture in my opinion.
The two narratives of a new and old zorro work so well (and further the connections to batman through batman beyond imo)
It’s a shame the sequel wasn’t able to capture the same magic… but this one? Great action, comedy and levity
So if old Zorro is training young Zorro, and if Zorro is essentially batman, isn't this essentially Batman Beyond?
My favourite part was when zorro met rude zorro and rude zorro said "get on yer back"
This has to be the most Aussie episode I can remember lol. I had 0 clue what 40% of they were talking about, but man I loved it lol
I Loved the Replacing of the "Heres the Thing" joke with a close up of Ebon Moss-Bachrach who is now playing the Thing 😂
Mr. Zorro Movies over here, am I right? Legend of the game.
I found it funny at 15:36 seeing my hometown's Vue cinema depicted with 2 bodies on the floor and a random Zorro, as this is indeed a realistic vision of what Birkenhead is like and you do indeed find characters like this around people sleeping on the street.
James does love a bit of Zorro
What a fabulous film! They literally don't make them like this anymore. It's a BIG summer action tentpole with apparently not a lick of digital effects anywhere in there! All practical filmmaking with miniatures, physical stunts, and the best swordplay around! Also, you can almost look at The Mask of Zorro as a proto-Batman Beyond. The classic Zorro has aged out of the role, and trains a young, unruly successor to bring justice to an unjust land.
They somehow made Anthony Hopkins pretty damn hot in this movie.
That's some back handed compliment. Maybe it was just by bathing in the aura of Banderas and CZJ.
SOMEHOW!? MATE!
Somehow? Excuse me?
Yes “somehow” because he’s also Hannibal Lecter, overtly sexual cannibal
Anthony Hotkins, if you will.
I also briefly forgot when this came out and thought the evil gentleman was Wyatt Russell.
Saaame. Blew my mind when James said it was Thawne.
I literally read this comment & 5 seconds later he brought up that bit wth
Figured this is why Ben was asking about that guy going to subway on twitter lol.
Fun fact: Zorro, Batman, and many superhero/vigilante tropes are inspired by the story “The Scarlet Pimpernel” which was originally published in 1905.
Pimpernel isn't easy!
I have to get around to reading that.
And loosely based on the outlaw Joaquín Murrieta.
If anything, Zorro is an anti-Pimpernel. He fights for the people, not to rescue noblemen from the Revolution.
@@TacticusPrimeDefinitely a difference in politics but still a clear inspiration
Personally this is one of the greatest superhero movies ever made. The origin story is done well, the sword fighting is impeccable and Catherine zeta jones enhances the movie with her beauty.
Did you guys know that Antonio Banderas was the voice of Puss in Boots? Who, himself, was a sword-wielding rapscallion. What a coincidence!
TIL
Puss also carved “p” into a tree like Zorro did with the “z” when he showed up in Shrek. That HAD to be on purpose.
@@joshhale9355 We're through the looking glass, people.
It was probably one of the best Zorro movies ever.
@@joshhale9355 He really shreked them.
Mask of Zorro is almost a perfect film. I love it. The biggest downside is none of the Mexicans are played by Mexicans (I even IMDB'd the Mexican guard who Anthony Hopkins kills to escape prison and the dude is a white guy from Detroit). British people playing Spanish royalty and Mexicans...it's hilarious.
I'll tell you who's underrated in this flick and that's Matt Letscher. Captain Love was an awesome villain.
Never heard James be so relentlessly positive about a movie. Feel Mason missed a real opportunity for a "Why don't you marry him if you love him so much" style joke.
Fun fact - it's believed that the 'real' zoro was actually an Irish man named William Lamport who moved to Mexico as a child and went on to try form a rebellion against the Spanish crown. He was given the name Don Guillén de Lamport (or Lombardo) y Guzmán
Was not expecting a reference to Yahoo Serious in my Mask of Zorro review, but here we are.
I'm 41 and you brought back old forgotten memories of watching that zorro TV show as a kid. Thanks a lot. Now what am I supposed to do with my life?
I love how without this movie, we never would’ve gotten Puss in Boots: The Last Wish
I love this movie so much. I do find it funny that they have a Welshman playing a Spaniard and a Spaniard playing a Mexican lol. Also if original Zorro was proto Batman then this movie is Batman beyond
By American standards Spain and Wales are practically the same thing, aren't they just separated by like a couple hundred miles of water
“Gerudo Valley” starting as they go into trivia is such a wild meeting of two worlds
Round of applause to the editor for the “here’s the thing” gag.
No lie / bra-fucking-o
I genuinely love the enthusiasm James has on display whenever he talks about Zorro. c:
I love that after all the years podcasting of Jame's mentioning loving Zorro we're finally here to review it, brings tears to my eyes or maybe it's all the gun powder from the explosions one or the other..
I genuinely had a moment where I thought, "Wait, is that Wyatt Russell? No, this is about 25 years old, it physically can't be," so it was nice to know I'm not the only person to see the resemblance.
Also, you've reminded me I've not seen this movie for a decade or more and I need to rectify that.
Fake Fans: We want The Dark Knight!
Real fans: I FREAKIN LOVE ZORRO
If you love historical and grounded content then Zorro is for you but if you are fond of accelerated stuff then it probably is Batman but Zorro is a classic
The horse chase is just incredible and still one of my favorite action scenes in any movie
The Mask of Zorro is awesome. Saw it in theaters... and my parents didn't get murdered
I love the fact that even though this series is broadcast to the world, these two still manage to include a reference, and footage, of Saint's legend Plugger, and the absolute prick of bloke that is D. Brereton. I love picturing the conversation where you try to explain the reference of such enigmas to Ben and Lawrence haahhaha
Something, something Blue Harvest.
The mask of zorro soundtrack is easily one of my favorite movie soundtrack in movie history, top 8 to be exact. 💯
"I want to spend my lifetime, loving youuu."🥰
This might sound lame, but I think part of what makes this movie so good is it's got a lot of heart to it. Something most movies don't seem to have these days
This and Wild Wild West were (and still are) my favorite movies ! ❤
Wait was there meant to be a West in there
I remember a Wild Wild Wet & Wild, but that falls under a different genre entirely....

The new "here's the thing" joke just made snort!! Bravo Ben and/or Laurence!
as a mexican kid, i actually LOVED this movie, watched it lots of times.
I loved this movie when it came out its incredible and still holds up well today cant believe its been over 25 years since its release.
I love this movie! Watched it all the time as a kid. Still holds up. Shame the sequel was not as good.
Tom Cruise: “You need a latino lead”
Also Tom Cruise: “I’m the last samurai”
He was not the last Samurai in that movie. Moritsugu Katsumoto was
That’s literally the historical person TC played, a Civil War vet who trained Japanese soldiers in western-style military techniques.
@steve152 We're buddies I call him TC
That edit of EMB with the line “here’s the thing” was unexpected and I love it. Top notch editing
James’ love for Zorro makes me love Zorro
Catherine Zeta Zones was the pinnacle of beauty in Zorro.
This movie was a ton of fun. I remember watching this with my dad and having a great time. Caught the end of it on TV recently, and it still holds up pretty well.
This movie is sooooo good! I miss movies having iconic moments like the glinting sword!
Captain Love (Matt Letscher) was my dad’s college roommate. Lucy Liu would knock on his window all the time to ask where Matt was.
the sean connery bit was so fuckin funny "i dont trust her" killed me
I always find it funny how close this movie was released to Batman Beyond, considering how the two characters are linked and they're both stories about the torch being passed.
i love this zorro film as well. I saw it when it came out in the theater also. You were close on the Batman reference. You have it right that yes Don Diego De La Vega is the main Zorro. But because he is old after escaping prison and taught Alejandro this is the "Batman Beyond" version of Zorro,
Fun fact everyone, Zorro is super public domain. The original two novels are free as are many early movie serials starting Zorro
I love this movie so much. The second one isn't terrible but not great, just good. You don't ever need to see it if you don't want to (unlike the first), but you can watch it and be entertained.
Also favorite Antonio movie that NEVER GETS ENOUGH LOVE!!!
13TH WARRIOR!!! One of my personal favorites
I can’t believe how much Maso loves zorro
This movie was when I fell madly in love with Catherine Zeta-Jones, she is absolutely gorgeous in this, it was also the movie where I realised I liked men too, swashbuckling Antonio Banderas is... something else 😳
Pretty good movie too, I guess.
The Mummy and Zorro are the catalyst for many a bisexual awakening.
I really like the dual revenge stories too. When one story is really going and then they switch to the other one, it’s not like, “Oh man show the other antagonist!” it’s “All right let’s see where this story is going!”
The Mask of Zorro is just a great action film. Patrick Willems has a video about the movie as well.
eight year old me loved this movie more than anything else in the entire world
I live for those old VFL highlights!
I’m so happy for James to finally be able to talk about his favorite hero!
THESE VIDEOS ARE PLACE OF HONESTY AND HONOR...
LIKE ZORRO
cried laughing at the edit, just beautiful
The comedic duo along with excellent editing make this channel a great one to watch. Thanks for all the hardwork, I know you make my day a bit better everytime I see an upload.
The late 50s show with Guy Williams would be on tv every afternoon after school here in Argentina. Love that show, glad it's all on Disney+, I recommend it.
Unironically, my aunt looked exactly like Catherine Zeta-Jones (hell, even her name could be of spanish origing) so when I learned years later that she was from Wales it left me perplexed.
My love of Zorro came from watching The Wonderful World of Disney.
Disney's Zorro, starred Guy Williams (Also the father, John Robinson, on Lost in Space).
Dude NEVER stops smiling, and the guy was just oozing charisma.
I'm beginning to think James might love Zorro
Remember being a little kid and watching this movie it was super fun
Really enjoying the editors adding animation to the James breath inbetween points being made.
I love being in the very niche crossover of people who loves The Weekly Planet and understands all V/AFL references.
“And here’s the thing” edit was very clever!!! Well done!!
All right, Antonio Bandmareas legit got me.
This video will be remembered for the return of custom "trivia" titles ❤
4:44 that too big guy looks a lot like Giant Gonzalez, I looked it up and apparently it isn't him. Its some other guy called Oscar Zerafin Gonzalez... And I can't find any info on whether or not the two are related. They gave the same (admittedly quite common,) last name, are both giants, and look quite alike.
Ahh the quick Barnsey screaming cowboy clip.. Glorious.
Oh my god! I wish I never watched this video! I'm so emotionally crushed now! We could have had Raul Julia playing Don Diego?! That would have been amazing! Damn you, human mortality!
I legit think The Mask of Zorro is better than any individual MCU film.
It has a romantic subplot with actual heat and chemistry, it has proper stunt work instead of CGI, it has animal comedy, it successfully combines sequel and reboot into a single film, it has great iconography (not seen in the MCU since the original Spiderman trilogy), tearing up the dance floor, wideshot sword fights, sloppily incorporated real world events… it has everything!
Although I don’t understand how the entire continent doesn’t realise that Zorro and Don Vega are the same heavily-accented Welshman…
17:41 i just love how, after thirty years, the ONLY thing ANYONE knows about Entrapment is, "Catherine Zeta-Jones + lasers"
it's always a great surprise to watch dermott brereton highlights in my weekly caravan of garbage videos. two worlds that shouldn't collide but alas do.
Diego Luna would make an excellent modern day Zorro.
Fuck yeah! everyone loves Diego Luna, he would be a great Zorro.
He absolutely would, he's got the vibe
You know they love this movie at the moment they were going over Martin Campbell movies and didn’t mention Green Lantern
as a kid I loved zorro, they played the old show on tv every day after school and I watched it all the time, I even had a Zorro costume and used to play as him, I have to say I agree 100% with what maso said, while I know recognize this is in fact a good movie, when it came out I hated it, because it wasn't a movie about Zorro, it was a movie about some random guy pretending to be him. Saludos desde Argentina
Watched it yesterday for the first time (I think). Absolutely loved it! Amazing stuff! Double revenge?!! Where else would you see that?!
One thing I want to add are is the dynamic between Anthony Hopkins and the Governor. When the wife dies, they immediately stop fighting and the dude absolutely seriously says “I would never hurt her”. And later on when he’s like “You think I would kill my own daughter?” and you believe it!
gotta love Mason & his “My Fair Lady” reference constant
8:48 🤭Go onnn
Maso holding back his mocking and laughing knowing James is about to nerd out 😂 cute mate
13:57 he's had enough 😂
Absolutely love this film. It's a pure adventure film anchored by an incredible cast, and *still* some of the most mind blowing on-screen stunts. The horse chase where a Zorro (aka some super stunt guy) on the back of a speeding horse does some kind of physics defying backflip to swap himself around to sword fight people chasing him on other horses is just a perfect example of peak 90s adventure movie greatness.
Boy, did i love zorro as a kid. I watched that old black and white ones like they were brand new all through the 80s.
Then the movie came out, and i loved it. I need to rewatch. It's been at least 20 years, probably more.
One of my fav films of all time! 90s classic
