I'm so glad you like it, ice dyeing is one of my favorite techniques! Most dye powders are mixed from a variety of dye colors, and ice dyeing allows those component colors to split out of the dye color. Those color splits and the dye movement that happens with ice dyeing are some of my favorite things about it. 😀
What a wild and beautiful design! It looks like the shirt was printed with a photo of actual stones...so impressive that you achieved such a realistic appearance from tie dye!

I love Black Cherry! I just used it on a dress along with Dances with Raisins and Shiitake and I think it turned out looking really pretty - I love the color splits!
Two things so amazing to see: Tie dying that isn't ROYGBIV, and that whole ice + sinew technique to get some seriously cool patterns. Thanks for this! Now, I want to make a few...
Well today is the first day I am trying to make a single ice dye geode. I am making it for my son. I am gonna be using the earth tone colors. I know the one Angie made using the earth tone colors really turned out pretty. I'll let you know how mine turns out. 😊
I agree. I finally figured out I had to mark the center point of the geode or I kept losing my place. I had to restart 3 times. Next run should be way smoother.
Love it! I am going to try this on a sleeveless farmer's dress (Dharma). The idea of just one geode, brilliant. I've been making several items with lots of little geodes. I already learned so much from your channel. Looking forward to try this one (today)!
I loved this pattern so much! Im new to tie dying (summer activity with my son and occasionally a friend or two) so Im used to Tulip dies, have never used soda ash in my life or sinew! Im curious about the sinew and would probably try that but dont know much about using powdered dyes. Could you even get an effect like this using the Tulip dyes? I get the impression that theyre clearly not on the same level as the powdered dyes! Again, the colors were amazing and your shirt turned out beautifully! Fantastic job!
Thank you! I started out liquid tie dyeing with my kids too, and we would have fun with it every summer. I started by buying Tulip kits as well, but after a couple summers of going through a ton of those kits, I started purchasing from Dharma Trading Company. I started by purchasing a few 2 ounce jars of dye at a time. I was amazed how many shirts I could dye with just a few jars. It's been over 20 years since I've used them, but I believe that the Tulip dyes are the same type of dyes that I use now (Fiber Reactive Dyes), but just not quite as concentrated. In the past, they used to add the soda ash into the dry dye powder, but I'm not sure if they do that anymore. When the soda ash is mixed with the dye and water, it starts reacting immediately and should be used fairly quickly otherwise it won't be as vibrant. So, when you add water to your containers make sure and use the dyes within 24 hours if possible to get the brightest colors. Using powdered dyes isn't difficult. The powder is ultra-fine, so it is important when working with powdered dyes to wear a respirator or a mask to avoid breathing in any of the dye powder. You can try using the Tulip dye powder on a shirt, or you can order a tie dye kit from one of the dye suppliers I use. Dharma Trading Company sells various sizes of tie dye kits. In the past I've had people tell me that the price isn't much if any more expensive to use a Dharma kit than a Tulip one, but I don't know if that's true. I'll add a link to the Dharma dye that I use. If you scroll down to the bottom part of the page, there are several different sizes of tie dye kits you can purchase that come with almost everything you need to tie dye, or you can buy the items individually. www.dharmatrading.com/dyes/dharma-fiber-reactive-procion-dyes.html?lnav=dyes.html You will have to mix your own soda ash solution to soak your shirts in, but that isn't difficult - and it is reusable. Sinew is a wax coated thick string that sticks to itself. When you wrap a couple of layers of sinew on top of each other around the shirt and pull really tightly, the sinew will tighten down on itself where you can't pull it anymore. At that point, the wax coating helps to form a waterproof or dye-proof barrier where the fabric underneath remains white. Dharma also sells sinew, or I have a link below this video in the description to Amazon where I purchase my artificial deer sinew.

Side note, I just bought these spoons and a sugar writer. I haven’t tried them yet because I’ve been doing a lot of liquid dye. The friends on FB say the tools work best when the dye is mixed with soda ash... I watch all of your commercials in their entirety. I hope that’s helps a little. 😉
I agree - I think that they would work great for HWI where you mix the dye with soda ash. They were OK, but since the dye is so fine it stuck to the culinary spoon too much to flow smoothly. I feel like the soda ash would help break that up and make it work really well.
@@FunEndeavors agreed. I’m not able to try HWI until our weather warms up and can go outside. I dye in someone else’s sun porch during the week and dyeing in her bathtub is not an option. Until I know what I’m doing I fear it could be rather messy. 😬
Great tutorial! I just want to know what is the purpose of ice? Is the dye needed to be applied in a cold temperature? What is the advantage of ice dyeing to traditional tie dye? Why need need to soak first into soda ash solution?
Thank you - I'm glad you liked it! Ice is what is used to get the dye powder down through the shirt. When it melts the water blends with the dye and carries it into the middle folds of the shirt. This dye doesn't need the cold temperature, but it does need water or ice. Ice dyeing gives a different effect to a tie dye than liquid dyeing does. When the dye powder is mixed as a liquid it is a solid color. For example a purple dye would be a solid purple color when mixed as a liquid and applied to a shirt. However when you take that same powdered dye and put it on a shirt with ice either over the top or underneath the dye, the component dye colors used to blend or mix the purple dye will split out and you will see some red, blue, purple, and other colors on the shirt. Since a lot of the Procion MX Fiber Reactive dye colors are mixed colors and not pure colors, ice dyeing yields a lot of cool color splits on a shirt which makes it look very unique. Here is a link to a video I made that shows the different outcome of a liquid vs. an ice dyed shirt: ua-cam.com/video/vqG5saLQFP4/v-deo.html Soda ash is what raises the pH and allows the dye to bond with the fabric. If you would like some more information about this topic, I have a blog post on my website that goes into more detail. Here is a link to my blog: www.funendeavors.com/tie-dye-blog
Wow! I have been binge-watcing your videos for the last hour or so watching on top of watching several other people's tye dye videos and that definitely the most beautiful design I have seen in my journey. You are an amazing artist!
Awesome! These are all Dharma Trading Company colors on this one. Sunrise red is the only color that isn't available anymore. I would just add a little more Fire Red in place of the Sunrise Red. I have all the colors listed below in the description for this video.
Your geode patterning is wonderful, reminds me of shirts one of my sisters made. Do you know about the lost wax method of dieing? It makes a shattered ice or glass pattern.
*Batik* is pouring melted wax through a "tjanting tool" in a design on fabrics, & then dying the fabric, & then removing the melted wax to reveal the white/non-dyed areas. It can be repeated, oh course, to have different colors & designs. *It's not tie-dyeing,* though it could be combined with tie-dye, I suppose, once the wax is removed, or if one used a very pliable wax. Though...I'm not sure that a pliable wax would be REMOVABLE. Scrap that... I THINK you may be NEED a stiff wax, in order to be able to REMOVE IT from your fabric. You don't want a wax which becomes a PERMANENT part of your fabric! 😉 So, on second thought...I'm not sure that you actually COULD tie-dye at the same time as batik. I'm pretty sure that batiking & tie-dye are _VERY SEPARATE_ processes only. You could tie-dye _THEN_ batik. Or, you could batik & _THEN_ tie-dye...though you would want to be careful about tie-dyeing THROUGH your batiked design. _They are_ *two separate processes,* _anyway, is my point. 🤣_
I think that shirt looks awesome. What is the purpose of you soaking it in the dawn is that just to keep you from having to sit there and rinsing it and rinsing it?
Since the Dawn is pH neutral, it will help keep any of the excess dye that is soaked out of the shirt from re-bonding somewhere else. Soaking in the hot water is an great way to get the excess dye out of the shirt without rinsing for a really long time.
@@FunEndeavorsthank you very much for your answer that always seems to be my problem especially when I'm doing hoodies takes forever to rinse the dye out of them before I put them in the washing machine I'm going to try this cuz I'm making some hoodies now and have to rinse them out today
@@jamieottino You're welcome! I have some hoodies soaking right now too. They seem to take forever to get rinsed properly - they really soak up the dye!
My sister and I have been wanting to try ice tie dye for some time now. So happy I came across your videos as they are so explanatory ! I was wondering if we only have access to rubber bands, will this stuff up the process?
That's great - I hope you love ice dyeing as much as I do. For this design the sinew is what gives the white lines between the colors. It is tough to get those lines with rubber bands because it is really hard to get them tight enough on the shirt. Your design will turn out with rubber bands, but you probably won't have the white definition lines between the colors.
i am in fact still intimidated by geodes and wonder how so many people do them perfectly yet i can do so many other tiedye patterns great lol... i will come back and tell yall if i was successful tying one at a time is a very good idea letsss goooo >>>
i just did one of these on a bleach reverse. my ice wouldn't stay put so i ended up going hot water irrigation. the color saturation is soooo deep when you put powder directly on the shirt. i love it
That's great - I'm really glad your shirt turned out awesome! It is tough to keep the ice on the shirt without some kind of an ice barrier. Hot water irrigation is a great alternative though.
Hi im very new to tie dying and i have got some inks and soda ask but didn't know you can get powder dose it work in the same way as with the ink you do both sides any help would be great thank you your shirt is amazing ❤ Bernadette
Hi! The powdered dye doesn't work quite the same way as liquid dye. Powdered dye will split and add a different level of color depth. I'm in the United States and I use fiber reactive dyes for my tie dye. They come in a powder and can be mixed into a liquid.
You are right - the yellow must be coming from the red. I've used chamois on ice dye and the split was subdued, very soft. Thanks for the video, I really enjoy your channel.
Thank you - I appreciate you watching! That's good to know - I bought the chamois to use as a neutral, but I don't remember if I've ever used it for ice dyeing before. I overlook the Sunrise Red because it is more of an orange red. I find myself always reaching for Fire Red or another similar red. I think the yellow that it split on this shirt looks really good though with the darker colors.
Dharma Trading Company has FANTASTIC customer service. I was dyeing fabric for a quilt. I was trying to match a portion of a panel I was using, so I sent them a link to a photo of the panel and asked "what dye do I want to match this area? Navy? Teal? Something else?" I expected to hear back in a few days. Dharma got back to me the _same day!_ And the teal dye they suggested was perfect!
This is on a whole other level than what I knew tie dye to be.

I think that shirt is awesome!! I will most definitely subscribe and can't wait to see what other treats you have for us!
Awesome - Thank you!
Good color choices I love it
Thank you so much! 😊
New subscriber to your channel. I love this shirt! I really want to I try an ice dyed geode design.
Thank you! I love ice dyed geodes, and I have quite a few tutorials on my channel.
@@BelladonnaDyesCo It'll be warm soon. You have a very nice friend to let you use their house to tie dye.
Thank you. This is one if the best I've seen...so easy to follow. Well done.
Thank you so much! I'm glad you like it.
Very nice ,please tell me what colour do you used, prousin colour?
Thank you! I have a list of all the colors that I used below the video in the description. I also have links to the supplier that I used.
this is the prettiest tie dye shirt ive seen :3
Thank you so much!
Here is a link to a video I made that shows the different outcome of a liquid vs. an ice dyed shirt: ua-cam.com/video/vqG5saLQFP4/v-deo.html
Soda ash is what raises the pH and allows the dye to bond with the fabric.
Thank you so much - I'm glad you like it! 😊
This is kool nice colors n design.love it
Thanks so much 😊
I think this is a great tie dye, I'm going to try this one with Darma Trading colors. Although I don't any of these colors. Wish me luck!! ☮️
Thank you so much! Is lost wax like Batik? If so, I am familiar with Batik but I haven't ever tried it. I love the results though.
@@FunEndeavors yes, I think batik is pretty much the same thing without clamping shaped blocks on the cloth used to keep the dye out of your pattern.
@@gordondeitz7838 That sounds cool!
So, on second thought...I'm not sure that you actually COULD tie-dye at the same time as batik.
Beautiful!! Your set up is very nice and clever.
Thank you so much!
Unreal , so gorgeous! Thanks for your beautiful video
Thank you so much! 🙂
@@FunEndeavors how long do you leave it soak in the dawn in between each time you rinsed it
@@jamieottino You're welcome! I have some hoodies soaking right now too. They seem to take forever to get rinsed properly - they really soak up the dye!
@@FunEndeavors yeah I just did a red and black one and it takes forever for that black to get out of there
Insanely talented and wonderfully filmed and narrated. Thank you for sharing your beautiful art with us! 🥰💜
Thank you - I'm glad that you like it! 😊
You can do it! 😀
This is absolutely stunning!! (And I fell for the stupid spoons too! LOL)
Thank you so much! 🙂
i just did one of these on a bleach reverse. my ice wouldn't stay put so i ended up going hot water irrigation. the color saturation is soooo deep when you put powder directly on the shirt. i love it
That's great - I'm really glad your shirt turned out awesome!
@@FunEndeavors thank you so much 👍😁
You are right - the yellow must be coming from the red.
I love Dharma Trading Company! They have spectacular customer service and their products are great!
If you can make one and two XL with a v-neck I will be happy to buy one
that turns out really really great!!! *.*
Thank you so much! 🙂
WOW!!!
THAT IS INCREDIBLY GORGEOUS!!!
Thank you so much! 🙂
I don't recall doing a single, always multiples. I'll give it a try.
You should give it a try. I love a single geode shirt.
