Thank you for this great tutorial - such clear instructions and presentation! I have a question: I accidentally bought the kind of dye that comes in the form of dry crystals. According to the instructions, I'm supposed to dissolve the dye in boiling water and submerge any fabric I wish to dye in the steaming-hot dye-water solution. I doubt that works for this technique, so I wonder if pouring that mixture on my prepared t-shirt will make any difference to the outcome? Or should I stick it into the water sideways? I don't have that type of pointed bottle and I don't know if keeping the water hot enough matters for this kind of dye. Both the dry and liquid versions come in a box and I forgot to shake it to see if it was the one I wanted. :/
Edit: PS: Another tip: Adding vinegar is supposed to lock the pigment in the fibres better. Just pointing that out in case anyone wants to add that step after the first rinse/soak in dish soap water. (:
Thank you so much - I'm glad you liked it! I'm not familiar with the type of dye that you purchased. However, if it was me - I would probably try sticking the shirt into the hot dye sideways. I've done that with a shirt into color remover before and it worked fairly well.
Vinegar is used during the dyeing process with some types of dye. However, it will not keep the shirt from bleeding dye with the type of dye that I've used (Procion Fiber Reactive Dye). The dye that is bleeding out is the excess dye that hasn't bonded with the fabric. Allowing the shirt to process at a high enough temperature for a long enough period of time is what properly bonds Procion Fiber Reactive Dye to the fibers. After the shirt is rinsed properly, the dye is permanent and won't fade. I have shirts that I made 10+ years ago and the dye still looks great. The fabric of shirt is wearing out, but the color looks bright.
Thanks you for your demontration
I'm glad you enjoyed it - thank you for watching!
I was thinking, as you were doing this that you could also make a smaller margin where you place dye.. so then when it creeps, as it will, you will be left with the right amount of white and color? I LOVE the idea of the thickened water! So that must just lock out the dye? I would love to see that done. Thank you for ALL your amazing videos. Ive learned SO much from you Angie!
Thanks! I usually just leave a larger white area than I really want and expect some of the color to creep over there. The dye likes to travel to an area that isn't already saturated with either dye or water. So, the thickened water will fill the fibers and hopefully deter the dye from creeping into that area as much. I'm glad you are enjoying the videos - thank you for watching!
I have one more question - its about the clear cake collars you used. I was looking at that as an alternative to cardboard for ice dyes. It seemed to hold up against a round ice dye.. have you ever used it for a longer one? Results? Im really curious about it. Thanks Angie!
@@pj3132 I have only used the clear cake collars with spirals. I actually prefer to use silicone cake molds most of the time. They are more expensive than the cake collars, but they are washable and reusable. They are also thicker and more easily molded to odd shapes like geodes. I will hold them in place around the shirt by clamping clothes pins next to them on the rack. Here is a link to the silicone cake molds so that you can see what I am talking about. I bought several sets and I use them constantly when I ice dye.

Thats a good tip. I had an idea to make a red/white/blue shirt. After the (not so good) rinse it was more like red/fuschia/blue. So I bleached it and ended up with purple/off-white/green LOL more like Xmas colors than the 4th of July.
Oh no! Those colors sound like they would look really cool together though. 😀
I will try to do thanks you for sharring your very good idea

Best instructions! Thanx a bunch!
Glad it was helpful!
Can you do these with the tulip dyes? Planning to do this for my boys birthday as THE activity of the day but have never done it. Want something simple and easy and fun, do you recommend the one step dyes like tulip dyes and do I need to wash the shirts first? Some say it needs to be wet before dying, is That necesario
You can use the Tulip dyes. I suggest washing the shirts before you dye to get out any chemicals that were used when the shirt was made. I think that Tulip adds the soda ash into the dye bottles, so I wouldn't mix the dyes until right before you are ready to use them. If you are interested, I've made a couple beginner videos for a tie dye party. Here are links to those. ua-cam.com/video/zcpHSYaDpiU/v-deo.html

I have boys and when they were young, they loved to make spider shirts (the 2nd link).
I used to tie dye outside with them so that they could be a bit messier. Make sure you wear old clothes and cover your work area if it is something you don't want covered in dye. I hope you have lots of fun!
Loved this tutorial!! So helpful and didn't skip anything
Thank you - I'm so glad you liked it!
You could also use Retayne ( 1 spoon ) to fix the colors ( instead of multiple rinse )
Thanks - I'll have to give that a try!
Love it!
Thank you so much! 🙂
I love your videos what have you found is the best dye to use ?
Thank you so much! I use Procion Fiber Reactive Dyes. It is a cold water dye that works on natural fibers like cotton, rayon, hemp, etc... The dye must be used with soda ash to raise the pH though. Once the shirts have been dyed and washed out properly the colors don't fade. I truly have shirts that are 10+ years old and they are still vibrant after numerous washings. They are sold by several suppliers. I purchase my dye from Dharma Trading Company, Custom Colours, Grateful Dyes or Prochemical and Dye. Here are there links:

Great video! Can you soak a few shirts at a time in the Dawn solution before washing in the machine?
Yes, you can. I usually try to soak shirts that are similar colors together.
Is it okay to dye it when the dress is wet? Or it should only be dry? Another question is does a black dye works for a faded violet dress? Thank youuu! Your video is very informative! ❤️
Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed it!
You can apply the dye when the shirt is damp - I wouldn't have it too wet though.
Black dye should show up well on a violet dress.
Fun. Thanks for that.

@@BelladonnaDyesCo Thank you! ❤

Great!
Thank you for this! I was looking for a design similar, is it better results if you dye on a dried shirt? I normally try it right after placing my rubber bands
I've gotten in the habit of dyeing most of my shirts dry. On thicker folds, it helps get the middle of the shirt well saturated. For example, on a mandala, if the fold is too damp when I begin applying the dye - the fibers are already saturated (kind of like a sponge full of water) and so the dye won't soak into them as easily. The outside area will be dyed, but the inside of the folds will most likely either be white or streaked white. You can get a thicker fold that is damp fully saturated, but it takes a bit more work. On a thinner fold like a spiral, it isn't necessary - it would work just fine to dye it damp. You can pull open a couple of the folds to make sure the dye is saturating the middle area really well.
If you use a rigid disc shape like a pie plate or plastic lid from a bucket container, etc., you can slowly let the water go behind the shirt by supporting it on the disc. If you are patient, and let the water pour off slowly by avoiding the white, there is little contamination of the white.
Yes, that works too! Thank you for sharing!
I love the video so relaxing I will try but with color blue, blue is a calm color the video was cool😁😁😁

Hi Angie is there anything else i can use instead of thickened water to prevent the color creeping on white areas?
Hi! You can either leave a much larger white area than what you would really like when the shirt is done, or you can just add plain water to the area that you would like to keep white.
That looks awesome

thank you for sharing you video for me to see, I never gotten the chance to do this when I was a child (1987 year born) so I have no clue how to different designs. Plus I never had the chance to see anyone do it or show me how to. So thank you, your videos are short enough but yet are very helpful and nice to watch with my daughter's.
Thank you - I'm glad you enjoyed the video. I hope you have fun tie dyeing!
Your explanations were clear and your demonstrations were better, I just want to say thank you for this amazing video and continue on.
But I still have a question. After the rinsing process, is it obligatory to put in the the blue soap and like soak it .....
Because I'm afraid it kind of lighten the colour of the dyed part and even get on the white parts .
Thank you - I'm glad you liked it!
It isn't necessary to use the Blue Dawn dish soap if you don't want to. The blue dawn helps to keep any of the excess dye that is being rinsed from re-depositing back onto the white areas of the shirt. It won't lighten the dye color though. The dye that is being soaked out of the shirt is excess dye that didn't bond with the fabric and that will eventually wash out of the shirt.

What exactly is “thickened water”? And can a similar method me used with liquid dye to make it stay in a certain dyed section with a less likely chance to bleed into other colors?
Thickened water is made by adding sodium alginate into the water to make it thicker. You can do that with dye as well. Thickened dye won't run as much, but it is also a little more difficult to get it down into thick folds. I use thickened dye when I paint on a shirt using fiber reactive dye. It's also great for outlining or making intricate designs.
Here's a link to the kind of sodium alginate that I buy: amzn.to/2EkHoZX
You will need an immersion blender or some other kind of blender to mix the sodium alginate into the water really well, otherwise it will clump. The mixture will also continue to thicken as it sits for awhile.
Does it work better if you let the shirt dry out a lot after soaking in soda ash or can u soak and hand wring really well and dye righr away?
You can hand wring the shirt and dye it right away.
Awesome tutorial thank you so much. My question is when you are using the washer and dryer do you have any issues with the dye being left in the washer and dryer?
No, not at all. By the time my shirt goes to the washer, most of the excess dye has been rinsed out. If you are concerned though, there is a product called "Color Catcher" by Shout or "Color Grabber" by Carbona that are sheets you add to the washing machine to help keep dye from staining your clothes.
@@FunEndeavors awesome thanks for the quick response. ❤

Is there any the dye methods that you don't have to rinse? And is soda ash the best method of dying? I'm thinking about getting into this and really could use some pointers, Thank you!😁
If you are using Procion Fiber Reactive dyes like I use, you must use soda ash to properly bond the dye with the fabric. There may be other types of dye available that don't require soda ash, but I am not familiar with those. I also don't know of a dye method that doesn't require rinsing.

Thank you so much for this helpful video! I am dying a pair of pants that are 100% cotton and I am worried that if I wash them in hot water, they will shrink. Is cold water ok? Or should I wash them in warm? Thank you!!
The hot water is really useful to flush out any of the excess dye that didn't bond with the fabric. You could try using cold or warm water - just keep rinsing until the water is almost clear.
beautiful
Thank you! 😊
Pls I would like to ask, apart from dye what other chemical do you mix because my teacher always use dye, sulphite and caustic soda together. Also what is the purpose of soda ash
I use Procion Fiber Reactive dye and I mix my dye by adding the dye powder and 1 Tablespoon of Urea for every 8 ounces of water. The Urea helps to keep the shirt from drying out during while it is processing and helps to get the dye into solution. The soda ash (sodium carbonate) is what I use to raise the pH so that the dye will bond properly with the fabric. From what I have read, the chemicals that you are using are mainly used to vat dye items and you may not be using the same kind of dye that I am either. I know that there are a lot of different types of dye available depending upon where you are located. I am not familiar with any other type other than Procion Fiber Reactive Dyes.
Thanks for your video.
Thank you for watching!
Thanks for sharing
Thank you for watching! 🙂
Very kewl!!!!!
Thank you!
Probably a dumb question but I’ve never dyed anything before, how and when do you use soda ash? And does any liquid dish soap work?
I use Procion Fiber Reactive dyes and soda ash is needed to raise the pH so that the dye bonds properly with the shirt. If you are using a different type of dye - you will need to read the instructions to see whether soda ash is a necessity.
I use Blue Dawn dish soap because it is a pH neutral dish soap. I haven't really ever tried any other kind of dish soap, but if it is pH neutral it should work.
@Breath Tomorrow The kind of dye that I use (Procion Fiber Reactive Dye) won't fade after the shirt has been processed long enough and rinsed out properly. I have shirts that are probably over 10 years old that are still beautiful and vibrant. Truthfully, I wear shirts out before they ever fade.
Waww😍😍😍♥️♥️
Hi, can you help me, I follow your video, but once I start washing the shirt, the white areas pick the color 8 usted, but lightly, how can I keep the white áreas?
This video shows the method that I use to try to keep the white area from staining using the Procion Fiber Reactive Dyes that I use. Is that the kind of dye that you are using? If it is, make sure to rinse the white area really well with cold water to get out all the soda ash before rinsing the colored area of your shirt.
