I am in the shot at 1:50:47, the white guy behind Barry's dad. Was working for the NBC broadcast that day. What a thrill to be on the sideline for this game.
1997 was an amazing year for Barry Sanders. It was an amazing year for me as a fan as well. There are many reasons Barry achieved that milestone, most of which are Barry's talent and determination. Now many have given credit to the Offensive Line which is very much deserved, but there is a group of players that I think were forgotten...the defense. I just watched the game again and realized some things possibly went unnoticed because it was overshadowed by Barry's accomplishment as well as the devastating injury to Reggie Brown. Sanders needed 2 yards and the Lions punted with a little over 3 minutes left in the game. The Jets needed a win and with the playoffs on the line that could have easily been the last time Barry touched the ball. But the defense did some very impressive things to get the ball back into Sanders hands. If not for them, the quest for 2000 yards may never have happened. Of course it took Barry Sanders and the Lions team an entire season to cross the 2000 yard barrier, i just had to give the defense some much deserved love.
That last 53 yard run was classic Sanders, I was at that game and had tears in my eyes over that second half performance! Barry was the best ever. What a class act!
One of the most memorable games of my childhood. This was my real, true introduction to what the NFL means. If there can be room for an NFL game being compared to grand opera, this is it.
My twin and I were at this game. Screaming as loud as we could so the defense could get the ball back so Barry could get his 2000 yards.the greatest reason in nfl history to scream and the ref told us to be quiet so the jets can make a play. The 1997 Jets-Lions game was the LOUDEST game I’ve ever been to. I had to put my fingers in my ears at one point, because it was painfully loud.
Even though Emmitt is the all time leading rusher, Barry Sanders did something with what was probably a porous offensive line. The only time you hoped to slow Sanders down on defense was being disciplined like the Jets were in the first half. Most teams tried so hard to stop Sanders. You don't stop elusive backs like that, you can only hope to control them.
When Barry let's loose late in the third quarter, you know history is gonna happen. Watching him run shot me out my chair. He's so fun to watch and cheer for. Even against my Cowboys back in the day, I could not but admire Barry. I'm also glad Reggie Brown was not permanently hurt by his serious injury.
From 1991-97 the Silverdome was one of the toughest venues in the NFL. The Lions lost that atmosphere when they moved to quiet, tepid Ford Field (plus the team has normally sucked) but there was a time that Detroit was one of the toughest road trips in the league, as you can see here.
Yea the crowd thing was strange. I've seen a ton of football games and have never seen them yell at the crowd like that. That is the entire point of HOME FIELD. People pay big money to cheer so that was total BS by that old fart ref. Every Seattle Seahawk game is that loud and its normal, I don't see them penalizing the Seahawks each home game. Totally strange for the refs to do that.
I don't remember any pro games having that issue back then until that game. So you are saying they changed the rule to allow for extra loud crowds? When was this?
PurpleRain SKOLyfe their o line wasn't that bad lmao, when you have a running back like that you surround him with a good line any front office knows that
LOL you don't know how bad Detroits Front Office was. They put 0 dollars into the line because they knew they could get away with it with Barry. Matt Millen admitted he had no idea what he was doing as the GM but he took Fords money and screwed the team with his stupidity. He must have had some dirt on the Fords for them to keep him, he was TERRIBLE and a MORON, still is.
I took my three sons to their first NFL game on this date. We were hoping for a game that would see Barry pass the 2,000 yard mark, but honestly, at halftime it didn't look like it would happen. During the second half, the Silverdome was the lowest of lows with the injury to Reggie Brown, then become the loudest experience of our lives when Barry was marching toward 2,000. A game and experience we shared that we will never forget.
Outside of Barry being the best ever and remembering watching him hit 2000, I'll never forget the "crowd is so loud that the refs call penalties" around 1:25:00 Yes, the refs made the Lions home crowd stay quiet while the opposing team had the ball. I don't care about what draconian rule may exist, that's a rarely brought-up example of how The NFL has a long history of treating The Lions differently. I can't believe a Raider or Packer or Steeler crowd would ever be told to not make noise by the league/refs.
I had the privilege of being able to go to this game. It was at the old Pontiac Silverdome where on any given Sunday the Lions no matter how bad could beat anyone in this stadium. This particular game had the highest of highs and the lowest of lows! The Lions won and made the playoffs by doing so, and Barry got his 2000 yards but Reggie Brown broke his neck in this game and never walked again, heartbreaking.
Didn't help the lions offense scheme/gameplan was predictable and basic and the lions coach looks like he has no idea how to call plays best suited for a QB.
1:27:14 Reggie brown apparently suffered a spinal cord contusion on this play. This, the 2000 yards by Barry Sanders, and the ref telling the crowd to quiet down, are what make this game memorable.
I wasn't born yet when Jim Brown retired but in my life being a Lions fan it was Billy Sims then Barry came along and he was electric ⚡ He's greatest RB ever just my opinion 😁
I was there. It was insanely loud and the officials had to tell the crowd to quiet down numerous times. The one guy got injured and Sanders hit that record. I was 11 years old.
Barry is such a legend…. And what a ridiculous rule that the home crowd couldn’t be “too loud”, as the ref warned the Detroit crowd in the 4th quarter. Thank God that rule went away
Watching Barry run the ball was poetry in motion.

This is the game where Parcells had the referee tell the crowd to quiet down, threatening a penalty if they didn't.
Totally strange for the refs to do that.
amlnet49 back then the rule was offense has to be able to call a play
I don't remember any pro games having that issue back then until that game. So you are saying they changed the rule to allow for extra loud crowds? When was this?
Bob Must've been a while ago because the 85 Bears vs Dolphins game they had the play stopped so the crowd was quiet.
Only against the Lions would this ever even be some BS that’s possible.
Vikings fan...watching this game because of Barry...the greatest running back ever...
One of the best wins in Lions history.

Who is here because of the MNF injury to Buffalo Bills Damar Hamlin. I'll never forget this
I think we're all ignoring the real All-time Lions MVP who also played in this game: Jason Hanson
Back when the Jets had sharp uniforms
Blue Skeptic it’s funny cuz I like both logos lol but as a graphic designer I feel like the 60s wordmark is timeless and has aged better
Barry Sanders is Greatest running of all time he took a trash Detroit Lions team to the playoffs. with a garbage oline
Barry was already gone by the time Matt Millen arrived.
@@Physics072 Bob the Moron? Matt Millen was never there, you're the problem idiot
Sweetness is the GOAT. Barry next
I get goose bumps on that last run
Good Lord, I forgot how easy he made it look. He was a gift from God! He was the team!
Legend. I can remember this game.
Thank you for uploading this
I took my three sons to their first NFL game on this date.
Last regular season game on NBC for 9 seasons till 2006
Sports Fan XFL was on NBC
Da Skillet lol XFL sucked 😂😂😂
Excellent picture quality and edited for a perfect pace.
CONGRATS to Barry Sanders! He earned the Season MVP. Shared the MVP season with Brett Favre.
This is the greatest nfl game I ever saw. The noise incident was crazy.
AHHHHH!!! SO MUCH BETTER THAN ANY SPORTS IN 2021......
+NFL thank you for this. Really, thank you.
Watched this live. There will never be another...
YEEEEEEEEEEEEEAH! Thanks for uploading!!!!
Last game the Jets ever wore those unis full-time…
…until now
Jets with the greatest uniforms of all time. Bring those babies back.
They brought the green helmets back at lest.
Man I miss the Silverdome!!! Such a great stadium to watch games.
Outside of Barry being the best ever and remembering watching him hit 2000, I'll never forget the "crowd is so loud that the refs call penalties" around 1:25:00
Yes, the refs made the Lions home crowd stay quiet while the opposing team had the ball.
I don't care about what draconian rule may exist, that's a rarely brought-up example of how The NFL has a long history of treating The Lions differently. I can't believe a Raider or Packer or Steeler crowd would ever be told to not make noise by the league/refs.
Seattle's stadium was actually designed to magnify the crowd noise. TImes change I guess.
1:23:58 is the best clip of all time Welcome to Detroit
I think everybody in America was rooting for Barry this game!! Greatest RB ever!!!!!
1:21:00- "Hey, how about that?"
Indeed Mr. Sanders. Barry made you proud on that run! 🙂
Actually, he made a full recovery, but that was the end of his football career.
Gosh, the Lion's QB was awful, hurt my eyes
O line wasn’t much better...but Barry was that good!
Scott Mitchell. I remember when he imitated Wayne Fontes in 96. That was his downfall.
Didn't help the lions offense scheme/gameplan was predictable and basic and the lions coach looks like he has no idea how to call plays best suited for a QB.
Thank you for video I recorded all of Barry’s games from 93’-98’ but tapes got Ruined at least I can see one now
The one and only the greatest
1:27:14 Reggie brown apparently suffered a spinal cord contusion on this play. This, the 2000 yards by Barry Sanders, and the ref telling the crowd to quiet down, are what make this game memorable.
my favorite runing backs are adrian peterson and barry sanders
1:27:13 - The play that ended Reggie Brown's career.
Barry was beast
I wasn't born yet when Jim Brown retired but in my life being a Lions fan it was Billy Sims then Barry came along and he was electric ⚡ He's greatest RB ever just my opinion 😁
I was there. It was insanely loud and the officials had to tell the crowd to quiet down numerous times. The one guy got injured and Sanders hit that record. I was 11 years old.
Every time I see Barry run I keep questioning why chip Kelly let McCoy go. Guy still is mini Barry
RODNEY KING MCLEOD 23Hunnit at least me have a good running back now but I do miss McCoy
Because Chip Kelly is a goddamned idiot who needed to stay at the college level.
RODNEY KING MCLEOD 23Hunnit this is the dumbest comment I've ever seen
Ben Dova how so
I'm a Bills and Lions fan and I agree with the similarities of the two.
Barry is such a legend….
And what a ridiculous rule that the home crowd couldn’t be “too loud”, as the ref warned the Detroit crowd in the 4th quarter. Thank God that rule went away
