Best team ever (1987-1990 49ers) playing in the greatest SuperBowl ever. I'll always get chills watching. Jerry Rice's catches keep the entire game interesting, and then we get that legendary final drive.
Joe Montana is so clinical in the clutch, SB's are team accomplishments, but the fact that he was 4-4, had 1142 yards, 13 total touchdowns and didn't throw an interception in any of them is kind of insane. What's even crazier about this game in particular is that he had 357 yards and 2 touchdowns, yet this was the only Super Bowl he didn't win MVP, because 215 of those and a touchdown also belonged to Jerry haha.
One of the greatest super bowl performances ever by a qb . Joe Montana carved up the Bengals defense on that last drive and also broke Doug Williams super bowl yardage record with 357 yards passing.
CHAD I HAD THE PRIVELEDGE TO BE IN A BACK VEGAS ROOM WITH PRO HANDICAPPERS SAYING THIS SB WAS A TOSS UP UNTIL KRUMRIE GOT HURT MANY STAYED AWAY FROM BETTING THEY SAID JUST ENJOY THE GAME
I remember watching this game as a local Bay Area resident. I don’t recall ever doubting Montana’s last drive during the moment. It was kind of magical then.
I love the shot of Ronnie Lott making his real identity know half way through the 3rd quarter, flying from left to right across the screen. Showing he's really Superman in disguise.
I was told that during that last timeout call of the 49ers, Montana pointed to his teammates that he spotted John Candy somewhere not too far. That was a genius way to relax everyone for just a little bit. Right after that timeout came the catch made by John Taylor to win the game. What a great Field General/QB Montana was!
This game was my introduction to football. I remember in gym class, my coach always wore these cool looking, black Bengals sweat pants with orange tiger stripes, and was so hyped for the Super Bowl, I had to check it out. At the start of the game, I was rooting for the Bengals. Then, Jerry Rice changed my mind. At my friend's house the day after, I agreed to finally play this game called "Tecmo Bowl" with him, one of his favorites. After that day, he never played against me again, and became a lifetime 49'ers rival. Truth be told, if "fan stats" were somehow recordable (from video gaming, school games, neighborhood pick-up games, holiday season games with family & friends, etc...), it would equate to a "Hall of Fame" fan career, lol. And now in 2024, the 49ers are back in the Super Bowl! Gooooooo niiiiiiiii nerrrrrrrs! 🌉🏟🏆🎆💪🏾.....🤲🏾🏈🏃🏾♂️💨
@@jackinwestchester4455 That's true!!! Bart Starr is!!! 5 NFL Championships and the first 2 Superbowl wins makes him tied with Tom Brady for the most championship wins in NFL History, but won during a time when the game was a lot more rough and difficult...
I got to meet Ronnie Lott. He's not a very big man. Amazing how he was blasting these huge running backs all over. They don't make'em like him anymore!
Ickey was never the same after Lott smacked him in the first quarter. He neutralized the running game that was already hurt by Stanley Wilsons super bowl eve OD. Holman had to block primarily. No catches the whole game.
I did some work for former Vikings great and hall of famer Carl Eller. I was surprised that he wasn’t as big as I thought he would be. Basically seemed to have a average build and was a little tall (6’-6” I’m 6-4”)but I couldn’t imagine how strong and fast he’d have to be to become the NFL player he was.
@@paulmarrujo5551 Well seeing a player in his playing days is different than retirement. Ive seen guys first hand be about a 3rd of the size they were playing.
CURT I WAS IN VEGAS W SERIOUS GA types (gamblers anonymous) said game was a toss up most had Bengals or stayed away these are pro gamblers not the fans cause Krumrie was too favorable a mismatch we all won Bengals covered
I was born in early 2000s and man I wish I got to witness this era live. Whole different, and better game. I'm even reminiscing the late 2000s and early 10s. Those games feel the exact opposite compared to watching today's football. I still am just as obsessed and in love with the game. But it's not the same.
Yup, rather be undefeated with no INTs any day. Shady became a choker and a loser forever with those two Giant losses. As Coach Gordon Bombay was told in the Mighty Ducks, "it's not worth playing if you can't win!"
Interesting Walsh beat the Bengals twice. The same organization that blackballed him through Paul Brown. It was also the Bengals where as an offensive coordinator he started developing his West Coast offense.
John Taylor was as important and equal to Rice. I bet Jerry would easily say that his success had much to do with Taylor as a threat to any teams defense.
Jerry T. Seeman was an American football official in the National Football League from 1975 to 1990 and was the NFL's Senior Director of Officiating from 1991 to 2001,
The Final drive after Cincinnati went ahead with just over 3 minutes to play I ABSOLUTELY KNEW Joe was going to pull out a miracle. When he hit Taylor in the endzone my cousin's apartment in San Francisco went berserk. We headed downtown and the whole city was partying. I high fived so many people riding limos up and down Columbus Street. I got punched in the gut by a young man. We almost got hit by a baton wielding riot cop. It was one of the greatest nights of my young life. I could not talk for a week my voice was so sore. That was just over 30 years ago. I"all never forget it.😀
It was eerily similar to what happened to the Cardinals 20 years later. They scored too quickly, and let the opposing team (Steelers) march down the field over 80 yards in the final minutes and somehow got in the end zone.
Remember recording all 22 of Super Bowl Highlights on ESPN the night before and morning of this game. I was 13. Loved the a super bowl so much. Was always excited about how the field would be painted. I was on no sleep for this game so I could pause out all the commercials fir the highlight shows. Remember Krumrie injury and being sad for him. Remember thinking I couldn't figure out how Bengals were in this game. Their defense was underrated. Remember the middle of the field being all torn up by game's end. What a finish. The genius of Bill Walsh and Mike Holmgren, putting John TAYLOR at tight end on the final play. Bengals lost track of him while focusing on Rice.
In other words, ESPN and NFL Network airings of Super Bowl Highlights before 1988 and 2003, respectively, were edited for time without opening and closing credits, while the ESPN Classic airings and Warner 🏡 Video-released DVDs included the opening and closing credits and original 🎶 intact.
You and me both! My dad used to let me stay up that one night because I was such a sports kid. I'd make it to around five or six lol...I was only 9. But this one was special because my uncle Ickey Woods was going to play and I just knew the Bengals were gonna pull it off. We all watched at my grandma's...1/2 my family are 49ers fans and it didn't matter if Jesus played for the Bengals, they would've rooted for San Francisco. So once Montana and Rice and Taylor snatched that ring away from my uncle, I have HATED them ever since. Absolute hatred. Still loathe the 49ers.
IMO, maybe this team will be back within year’s time. They just clinched the division. But they definitely should’ve won both this and maybe even 16. Both were lost due to turnovers, and defensive collapses. I wasn’t even alive when this game happened (born 1995) but even I felt immense pain watching them come so close this time to closing it out.
the first play i ever watched was a touchdown pass to Mr. Jerry Rice.diving over the orange cone.coolest man.just walking by Levi stadium in 2017,on my birthday..thanks happy birthday acorn
R.i p to the legendary coach Bill Walsh he was the beat coach the 49ers have ever had. He gave us the G.o.a.t Montana the best WR in Rice and he also gave us the amazing Young. He will never be forgotten.
A couple of notes about this game. First, given that the Bengals were the highest scoring team in the NFL in 1988 and had the NFL's MVP in QB Boomer Esiason, the mere fact that they did not score an offensive TD shows just how good and underrated the defense on those 49ers teams really were. In fact, in their four Super Bowl wins in the 80s (XVI, XIX, XXIII, and XIV), the 49ers' defense gave up only five offensive TDs, and two of those were when the games were in hand. Also, it was almost universally believed that John Unitas was the greatest QB in the history of the NFL up to this point, but what Joe Montana did, bringing the 49ers back, combined with what he had accomplished in previous seasons and the '88 post-season, which included two blowout wins leading up to Super Bowl XXIII, changed my mind, and eventually, most people's minds changed regarding who's the greatest QB ever, and to me, Joe Montana now holds that distinction, though if he wins a fifth Super Bowl, Tom Brady may surpass him, given that he already holds the records for most Championship Game and Super Bowl appearances at 9 and 6, respectively, and also shares the record with Ken Stabler (1973-'77) for leading his team into five consecutive conference championship games.
cjs83172 another thing about this Super Bowl is this game had no business even coming down to a last second touchdown by the 49ers. The 49ers offense move the ball against Cincinnati at will but everytime they got in Cincinnati's territory they kept screwing up. This easily should have been a blowout.
If you remember the Bengals were not allowed to run there hi powered offence with the no huddel for this game. The commish forbid it,Iloved the 49ers but if they could be beat this was the time and team.
As a Bengals' fan, I've always felt like Fulcher never gets the credit he deserves for his individual performance this game. He was tremendous...too bad injuries cut his career short, because he was a real force when he was healthy.
Quick observations from this video: 1. Amazing open field tackling 2. Running the ball on 3rd & 3 (and getting the 1st down) 3. Unbridled intensity (and the refs let it happen) 4. Montana= G.O.A.T 5. Ronnie Lott was a human sledgehammer!!! I wish they let the game be played like this today!!
@@wanyelewis9667 also stanley wilson coke binge night before pretty much compromised Boomer's best strength, the playaction. Stanley wilson would have stood up to Ronnie Lott and the bad turf. Rodney holman was forced to be the blocker in his place, why he had zero catches.
Just to your first point, I've noticed the steady decline in that over the last couple decades. Ironically, the next year, the 49ers took advantage of the Broncos not making those tackles and they paid dearly for it.
Even with the mostly thrilling Super Bowls of the last 15 or so years, this one still belongs in anyone's Top 10 for Best Super Bowls. Bengals D kept them in it by holding the Niners out the end zone for such a long period in the game. Niner D kept the Ickey Shuffle in check, preventing them from utilizing their play-action game that put them in the SB to begin with. And no guarantee the outcome is different if Billups holds on to the pick in the end zone; there was still a lot of time left in the game.
In the year, 2022 the Cincinnati Bengals are in the AFC Championship game and the San Francisco 49ers are in the NFC Championship game. I want to see another Super Bowl matchup between these teams. This game was exceptional. Cincinnati played a great game.
The NFC was dominant in super bowls back then with redskins giants bears cowboys & 49ers. The AFC didn't win a super bowl until Denver won in 97 or 98.
There's something really wrong with how Craig wasn't inducted in his final year of eligibility as a modern-era candidate or even in the years leading up to it. He can still go into the HOF later on as a Senior and I am wagering he will, but I am still shaking my head as to WTH happened. www.nbcsports.com/bayarea/49ers/49ers-great-roger-craig-shrugs-hall-fame-snub
Wow...I remembered this game in my younger days watching this with bunches of family. I long since moved out of the Bay Area. The 80’s and 90’s were the good years
The interception drop by Billups is really the only ball I remember Montana putting in harm's way in 4 Super Bowls. Boy that was a big one. I almost forgot about it. Funny how we only remember the great plays our heroes made...
Leon Müßle if Steve Largent had stick em and used gloves pretty sure he would have doubled maybe tripled so please learn before you talk there's alot of wr who are extremely good
MrQ000000 no. Goat qb. This guy didn't have to spy on the other team or deflate balls to get his superbowls. Also, he did it in much shorter time than Brady (9 years as opposed to 14)
@anthony compoccia• Then you must be from another country or new to football. The AFC dominated the super bowl games the first decade of the game only Dallas won one until the 80's.
I'm not a Bengals fan, but that dropped interception, and ending (aka massive defensive collapse) was painful AF. They literally let this game slip away. They still haven't recovered from it over 30 years later and has played a role in keeping them from going back IMO
@@tobiasblack1749 Well, talk about dropping an interception, what about the 49er defensive back in the 2022 Championship game? He catches that ball and the 49ers score again instead of the Rams. But he choked and the 49ers lost. He won't be on the team next year. Trust me on that.
I was 10 years old an a Bengals fan then as all Ohio kids were then. We all loved Ickey Woods. This game, was my first chance in life WATCHING A A COUPLE TRUE LEGENDS, break my heart, lol. MONTANA WAS MAGICAL AS HE WAS SO MANY TIMES. I was bummed, but at same time thrilled i seen this masterpiece.
Teams have good years, and bad years...but GOOD fans.....loyal no matter what. Been a 49er, SF Giants, GS Warrior fan all my life....and yeah, I lived through some BAD seasons in my 55 years.......but it was a great time to be young
Man, I thought the Bengals had this one. . .Then Montana comes marching down the field for a touchdown. I might be a Bengals fan, but Montana is definitely the G.O.A.T. When Joe went in to the big game, you just knew the 49ers would win. Unlike Brady who has lost two Super Bowls, Montana never lost the big game. Not to mention, didn't have all the new rules that protect the QB now days, and also never cheated!
@@MrDugfresh420 He just won his 6th, on 9 appearances. I understand why people still make the argument that Joe Montana is the G.O.A.T, but this is a while new generation of athletes that has taken over. Sometimes it's best to pass down the torch and let the newer athletes take over.
After growing up in MN and watching the Vikings go to the Superbowl and LOSE 4 times...I moved to the Bay Area (CA). I was thrilled to watch my new team go to the SB and WIN 5 times. I will never forget Joe Montana, Jerry Rice, Steve Young and the rest of the 49ers. Many of their records still stand to this day. NFL players should study those old games to learn how to play football. Brock Purdy is one of the few QB's that might become another Joe Montana or Steve Young if he keeps playing like he is doing now. I wish them luck to go again to the SB and WIN again. GO NINERS !
How do you run an ad, right when the guy scores a touchdown? You are destroying the viewing experience, by sucking the energy of that initial crowd reaction. If you run the ad, run it after the extra point, would you please?
This 1988 Super Bowl was only one of a measly two NFL title games of the decade to be competitive..the other in '81, between the same two teams, 49ers and Bengals..
VinnyXwolf Yeah yeah..so 2 and a half then..literally every other one that I remember was a one-sided thrashing..culminating in the biggest ass waxing in Super Bowl history in 1989 with these same Niners nuking the Broncos, 55-10.
Cat Mario to be honest this game had no business being competitive either. The 49ers moved the ball up and down the field against Cincinnati in this Super Bowl at will, but kept shooting themselves in the foot every time they got Cincinnati territory. This game should have been a blowout
Super Game Jerks is that seriously the biggest argument you. Stickum didn't give rice 197 touchdowns, his feet and literally hands did. A study was conducted and showed that modern day NFL grip'em gloves, which is standard NFL equipment, makes Stickum obsolete.
Epical game, greatest legends on the field, Montana-Taylor-Rice, excellent players of american football on the end of the years 1980´s of the 20th. century, mine respects, San Francisco 49ers for the sixth title of super bowl, drawing with New England of Nueva Inglaterra and Pittsburgh, THANK´S JOE MONTANA, REMEMBER TO YOU!!!!
To GT:Cris was a All Pro receiver during his career up amongst the leaders in the AFC in receptions and receiving yards. He had the bad luck appearing in the two Super Bowl losses against the 49'ers.
I remember how back in those days we all felt the game was over as soon as Taylor caught the ball. Today, it's like...over 30 seconds and all 3 timeouts? Plenty of time! 😅
I am so glad we no longer have to watch almost an entire quarter before they show us the score or the time on the clock! They literally only show the score when a team scores!
I was 10 and watched this on VHS before going to school on the Monday morning here in the UK. The first Super Bpwl I saw and I was hooked - amazing finish. Rice was just on a completely different level.

Bengals defense simply choked, letting Montana hold the ball for minutes and dropping a potential interception earlier on.
true. but that final drive orchestrated by Stafford this last SB was legendary too
I remember watching this game as a local Bay Area resident. I don’t recall ever doubting Montana’s last drive during the moment. It was kind of magical then.
@Mr. No Weapon (The Prince Of The Talkbox) point well taken. Apparently that Rice guy made a key play or two. Something about some MVP award?
I love the shot of Ronnie Lott making his real identity know half way through the 3rd quarter, flying from left to right across the screen. Showing he's really Superman in disguise.
I was told that during that last timeout call of the 49ers, Montana pointed to his teammates that he spotted John Candy somewhere not too far. That was a genius way to relax everyone for just a little bit. Right after that timeout came the catch made by John Taylor to win the game. What a great Field General/QB Montana was!
I like the way they celebrate in this game. No special effects sounds, no graphic crap all over the screen. Ahhh.
I love watching a football game and not knowing what down it is or how much time is left
This was my first time seeing them play, I’ve been a faithful Niners fan since.. 30 plus years, I lived n will die as faithful Niners fan

Oh man! You ain't lyin'!!
Wish they would just let them play today like they did back then
It's mostly the same brand of football. Today's game also makes it easier to see what's happening on screen
John Taylor was so underrated. If he wasnt playing on the same team as Rice he could have been a number one receiver on another team.
You got that right! They don't make em like that anymore, not even close.
I think Lott was on the juice.

True. But the 49ers also lost future HOF OT Steve Wallace early in the game.

I was born in early 2000s and man I wish I got to witness this era live. Whole different, and better game. I'm even reminiscing the late 2000s and early 10s. Those games feel the exact opposite compared to watching today's football. I still am just as obsessed and in love with the game. But it's not the same.

One if the best memories of my life..Montana to Taylor....TOUCHDOWN 49ERS!!!
Montana was always at his best when the game was on the line.

@@RYMAN1321 luv those nail-biting superbowl I won 5OO$ on the numbers on that last second to in the corner d endzone
That hit Montana took at 12:45 would have a 2023 QB sent off on a stretcher. The defender ejected - fined - suspended.
Giants made sure he got put out in 1990.
“John Taylor, who sells cars in the off season...” Geez, I’d say professional athletes have done a little better in the last 30yrs.
Sells cars for "Reggie Jackson".
Haha right, that's hilarious to hear
At the time, Taylor was better known as "that other guy Montana threw to"...
That's hard to believe, especially for the 80's.
As a new Bengals fan I look back at this game as the past, hope we can reach this height again
IMO, maybe this team will be back within year’s time. They just clinched the division.
But they definitely should’ve won both this and maybe even 16.
Both were lost due to turnovers, and defensive collapses.

MICOLE WHYTE because bengals played their hearts out, they missed a key player from defense and their main rb.
Brady couldn't hold Montana's jockstrap
If you remember the Bengals were not allowed to run there hi powered offence with the no huddel for this game. The commish forbid it,Iloved the 49ers but if they could be beat this was the time and team.
The Cawd Squad not far. You are overreacting
For the Bengals, one of my college buddies growing up was #33 David Fulcher, who went to Arizona State University back in the early 80's.
As a Bengals' fan, I've always felt like Fulcher never gets the credit he deserves for his individual performance this game. He was tremendous...too bad injuries cut his career short, because he was a real force when he was healthy.
Quick observations from this video:
1. Amazing open field tackling
2. Running the ball on 3rd & 3 (and getting the 1st down)
3. Unbridled intensity (and the refs let it happen)
4. Montana= G.O.A.T
5. Ronnie Lott was a human sledgehammer!!! I wish they let the game be played like this today!!
