On Monday, Nov 30 (8-9pm), Los Angeles College of Music (LACM) welcomed legendary guitar player and solo artist Joe Walsh to their ongoing “Let’s Talk Music” series to share his outlook on the modern music industry and offer wisdom from his accomplished career to students, alumni and fans.
Best known for his powerful guitar licks, Joe Walsh has entertained the masses and captivated his peers for more than four decades with such classics as “Funk #49,” “Walk Away,” “Life’s Been Good,” and “Ordinary Average Guy.” In 1969 Walsh found success with The James Gang, followed by a stint with Barnstorm, a trio he founded. In 1973 Joe released his first solo album, which proved him a legitimate solo act with a limitless career on the horizon. By 1975 he joined The Eagles, bringing a harder rock sound to the group with the acclaimed Hotel California, The Long Run and Eagles Live.
In 1994, after a 14-year hiatus and several solo albums, The Eagles released Hell Freezes Over, which reached #1 on the Billboard charts and sparked one of the most successful tours in music history. And in 1998 The Eagles were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the first year they were nominated. In 2001 Walsh received an Honorary Doctorate from Kent State University and in 2012 the Berklee School of Music gave each of the Eagles Honorary Doctors of Music degrees. Walsh performed at the 2012 Grammy’s with Paul McCartney, Bruce Springsteen and Dave Grohl and at the 2012 MusiCares event honoring Paul McCartney. That June Walsh released Analog Man, his first solo album in 20 years, performing solo shows around the world to support it throughout that year. In 2013 the award winning The History of The Eagles showcased at Sundance, the two part authorized documentary, and in February it aired on Showtime. In conjunction with the April release onto DVD the Eagles began their extensive The History of The Eagles World Tour. On February 9 2014 Walsh was featured in several songs on the CBS Special The Night That Changed America: A Grammy Salute to The Beatles. In 2014 Walsh played select solo shows as well as with the Eagles on The History of The Eagles World Tour, which continued through July of 2015. September will see the launch of Walsh Toor 2015, kicking off with a record setting sellout for the first two shows in Warren, OH and continuing with dates throughout the East Coast. On October 4, 2015 Joe will be joined by friends including Steven Tyler, Sheryl Crow and Jason Isbell when he performs at the UNITE to Face Addiction rally in Washington DC. December 2015 will see him return to the nations capitol, this time to join his Eagle band mates when they receive the 38th Annual Kennedy Honors.
LACM’s “Let’s Talk Music” series is an event hosted regularly for students and alumni of LACM, and for the music community. Other musicians previously featured in the series include producer Glen Ballard, Taboo of the Black Eyed Peas, Ziggy Marley, Moby, Dave Wakeling, Gavin Rossdale, Linda Perry, Stewart Copeland and more.

I sometimes feel like Joe doesn't realize just how much he is appreciated and loved for first for the person he is and how great he is for the music he plays. One of the greatest guitar players of all time.
Joe is one reason I picked up the guitar way back in 1978. Joe, Jimmy, and Edward were my inspirations. Jimmy because of his go for broke style and songwriting, Joe because of his unique riffs, and his quirky and fun attitude, and Ed because he came from another planet.
For a kid from Munroe Falls, Ohio, this fine musician rubbed shoulders with us for a moment, and we are forever grateful. While i appreciate Mr. Walsh's humility, the world needs to know what a great songwriter, guitarist and singer he is. The James Gang was so good that Pete Townsend 'asked' them to come tour with them, and there were always stories of local guys that played with Hendrix and the WHO while in England. One fellow at Underwood's music store has a Rickenbacker that Pete gave to....to....
I was even picked up hitchhiking once by James Gang's original guitarist, Glenn Schwartz, and castigated for my teenage sins, but that's another story. All this BS is just to say that, having lived through maybe the greatest time for music in history, having Joe Walsh try out Kent State for a semester was a never-ending stroke of luck for many of us.

I chuckled when he mentioned that he figured out that if you pretend you know what you're doing, everyone will think you know what you're doing... It was one time a while back when another band was scheduled to play this gig and there bass player was really sick and they asked me to sit in for him. I play 6 string guitar, I've messed around on a bass but that's about it. Well they talked me into it and I just used what I knew. I don't think anyone even realized that I wasn't a bass player and the evening went great... So yeah! I pretended I knew what I was doing and faked it with confidence and pulled it off... So true Joe...

Legendary - never been truly recognised as the musical genius that he is. Technically and intuitively one of the most talented guitarists in the world. So human, so humble. The Real Deal.
Joe Walsh .. singer, songwriter & guitarist .. super group member, successful solo artist, this, kiddies is what we had to describe the term legend, thanks for the great times Joe .. you helped me through the very dark days in the troubled times in N.Ireland along with the other fantastic musicians of your era,. So true, but he's such a good guitar player, his voice comes second. I remember him fondly from James Gang fame. I was hooked from then on. You took his voice for granted, I guess. But, you are correct. His voice is unique and special. He can rock it out, yet he can sing a soft ballad and he can make you cry.
There's pain in that voice. And there's the life of a rocker in that voice. But, there's joy and humor, too. He's done it all and lived it all and is still around to tell the stories through his music. And he does it quite well.
Seriously, he's still got it too somehow. He did While My Guitar Gently Weeps with Gary Clark Jr. at some awards show and his vocals were *amazing*
I remember what Glen Frey said about him in that Netflix EAGLES documentary when they hired him to replace Bernie.... " Vocals will suffer a little" Pause....."But we're gonna kick some serious ass!!" He definitely was right about the "serious ass" part lol

Joe Walsh is one that I have ALWAYS wanted to see in concert!!! That man is a true legend!!!! It’d be a dream come true if I could just meet him!!!! He is AMAZING!!!
For years I played guitar by myself and didn't sing. A friend coaxed me into street performing. I was extremely nervous at first. This is a great way to test the water whether you suck or if you are great. The positive feedback came sometimes surprise you. This is the motivation needed to continue playing. Nowadays I use the fact that I have invested in a nice guitar collection and am obligated to play these guitars. This is a Joe Walsh strength playing different guitars every performance.
An interviewer that doesn't try and make it about them. What a concept to actually let the person your interviewing talk. Most of the talk show hosts today need to learn that lesson. That's what made Johnny Carson so great.

Joe is a class act. He always has been. Back in the days when he was on coke and vodka, he was still a class act. He has always liked to have fun and he likes it when others have fun, too. He's had his troubles outside of drugs and alcohol, too, such as the death of his daughter.
When the Eagles decided to get back together, they went to Joe and said they would never think of doing it without him, but he had to be sober. Joe said he had been thinking he needed a change, but until then, he didn't have a good reason.
He said that gave him a really good reason to get sober. He said it came at just the right time, too, as he knew in his head that a change was necessary. He felt the second chance with the Eagles gave him a second chance, too.
He said it was scary getting on stage sober, but he figured it out. Just like he says in this interview, he said as long as you act like you know what you're doing, people will think you do. I really think he was being modest Joe, as he often is. I think Joe has always had a pretty good idea of what he was doing, even if he might not have known it at the time.
Joe is perfection in a musician. He started out young and had his ups and downs. Then he got big breaks here and there and once he got sober, he he got his biggest break of all. He found out that he could still have fun playing music...while sober. And the rest, as they say, is history. This is why Joe is a class act.
@ Justin Oldmusician Great comment. I think you summed up Joe in a very honest way. As a guitarist myself,Joe was (and still is )my biggest influence along with Jimmy Page and Ed VanHalenand Billy Gibbons (early ZZ Top) and I am not a shredder, per se,I am more laid back. So, Joe and Billy are what I really strove to sound like. I also think Joe has an amazing voice. He also harmonizes with Eagles so well, they all sound so good together singing. I have seen him only one time, but it was at a small club in N.Y.C. called "The Ritz", and the original spot is gone to freakin condo`s or some crap! So I was literally 5 feet directly in front of him. He is such a down to earth guy, that he even goofed with me throughout the show. Needless to say, we were both pretty drunk and high that night. We are both sober now as well. I found that show so dear to my heart,that I remember almost everything that happened even though I was loaded. All of my hero`s are so old now,and I am no youngster either!! I will always be greatfull to Joe for how he helped me in so many ways in my life. Bless you Joe!!

I'll never forget being in grade school and hearing funk 49 and walk away. Magical days. Joe is very soulful, and he is an original. So happy to see people showing him the respect he deserves.
One of the best interviews on the internet today - so much insight into the world of a real musician. Truly a national treasure - his intellect has survived the rigors of Rock & Roll and now he can articulate so much common sense wisdom.

This guy was an amazing interviewer. He asked a good question and then sat back and let the interviewee answer the question. He didn't try to interrupt; he didn't try to jump in and be the center of attention like you see a lot of times. Joe has a lot to say about the music business, because he has "been there done that" for SO many years.
I enjoy Joe Walsh interviews, he's down to earth, its like sitting down with a friend.

@ Julie Coble There is really NOTHING you can say about Joe that is negative. I absolutely LOVE Joe Walsh. He is one of my top 3 main influences as a guitarist, and he speaks the truth. He says what is on his mind, every time he speaks in an interview, but you never hear him talk crap about anyone but politicians and the fall of the music industry due to computers.

What a great guy. I have watched him in "History of the Eagles" numerous times. He is just the nice guy, seems to go with the flow. Has a little too much fun, but that is what makes Joe, JOE! Hope he's around for a good long time. I'm still so dumbstruck about Glenn Frey passing. So many from my/our era, the 60's and 70's are going, and it is a real shot or mortality, hit me like a ROCK. You always knew we were gonna get older, but now that it's here, it seems like it's all gone by too fast. Very bittersweet. Thank God for the music and how it can snap you back to a time or place. It really is the soundtrack to you life. Thank God, for Joe Walsh, Glenn Frey, the Eagles and the memories. I don't know where I'd be without them. Tucson, the desert, the music, the 70's. I never think for a moment I wish I'd grown up in a different time, I was right where I was supposed to be, at exactly the right time!
Saw James Gang in concert in St. Louis, early 70's, it was great, the headliner was Foghat and the starting band was Spirit. Crazy good rock concert, every band just came out and blew us all away. Been a fan of Joe for many years I think it's great that he supports the Veterans, just makes me look up to him even more. Want to hear more!

Digital processing had thwarted the muse in studio. Music became a commodity and lost its spontenaety. I think Joe was talking about performance magic, not the music itself. Music shouldn't be so purified that it loses the humanity. Today's industry is different but there are artists that are going back to analog roots, incorporating digital influence, and leaving good enough alone.
So grateful for Joe Walsh and his influence. He's a national treasure.
That voice!!!! I have so much respect for Joe on so many levels. He has more talent in his pinky than most people have in their whole body. The thing that I revere him for most is overcoming drug addiction and alcoholism. YOU MADE IT JOE. You look great too!
I was born in 1953 in the late 60s & 70s i fell into the Hippie movement along with it came drug's & and alcohol l thought I had found heaven never knowing it would almost kill me & killed many of my friends it took decades to stop i can't begin to tell you what I've been through. I'm clean & sober now but what a ride ☮️
Joe Walsh - one of the greatest talents in music today. Heard him for the first time in college (1975) and his music always lifts me up - 40 years later. Not often you find such a talent as well as a great guy.

Don Felder composed the melody and leads for the song, but both he and Joe Walsh performed them on the album.

yeah kind of he's extremely intelligent that's why he sound sometimes the way he does cuz he has to think out what he wants to say through the years.
of course yes the booze and the drugs they did fog him for quite a few years but there's always been a very intellectual person still..
people don't realize his goofiness a how you doing and all that fun stuffthere was someone whole lot smarter than what people ever thought as he kind of played off the goofiness having fun.

2016, Single, by myself on Thanksgiving, excellent health, no arguments, no broken heart, one cat and two happy, underachieving single female friends in my life, no social media, working on a big oil painting of a pretty girl and building a brick walkway in the backyard, no kids, no divorce, no court proceedings, no alimony, bison eggs and spinach for breakfast, cup of hot coffee, and a great Joe Walsh interview in which I learned that the oboe tunes the orchestra, and I heard "How High the Moon" for the first time. You can appreciate from this interview that his parents' influence on him in music was the beacon of light for HIS music career, and undoubtedly a major reason for his success. Also, his level-headedness in a music world full of hard-partying, booze and drugs was a contributing factor to him making it to the big time I'd bet... An interesting personality and very talented musician and song-writer no doubt.

Well it has been 5 years since you wrote that comment Steve, and thank God Joe is still with us. I do not like to think of a world without Joe. We are losing so many now. Jeff just died, Dusty Hill died. David Crosby, and a few others just in the past few years.
Joe is responsible for the guitar sound on Who's Next. He turned Pete Townshend on to a combination of a Gretsch Chet Atkins guitar and a Fender Bandmaster in 1970. He told Pete that you can only get that particular sound with that specific guitar and amp combination. He also sold Jimmy Page his '59 Les Paul in 1969. In 1969 Joe was 22 years old. What an influence and a genius. Criminally underrated.
he also gave Pete that synthesizer that he used on who's next that was a gift from Joe😊🎹
So, so good! Joe was and always will be the real deal. No canned responses to the questions either; just a lot of tough love based on his real-world experience, and the current state of the industry from his perspective. Not to get into one of those UA-cam diatribes, but if these "kids" had the slightest clue (the unwritten p.r. stuff) what this guy has gone through, survived, and conquered, their jaws would drop. Kudos to the young man who addressed him as "Mr. Walsh", and prefaced his two-part "Eagles" question by offering a gracious exit strategy at Joe's sole discretion - that's respect. In response, an elaborate and candid answer that Rolling Stone and the others could only dream about. There are so many "rock legends" not even worthy beyond the days of their prime; but in true form, Joe remains the long-shot who always manages to finish first. Hats off Joe!
Love that this came around on my feed again. Joe is the salt of the earth. He's his own man. Nothing contrived or manipulative. Always behind a good cause. Cuts through all the crap. On the pulse of what really matters most.
To quote Shakespeare, "To thine ownself be true." Always respected him as a muso, but here we see a thoughtful, introspective, self-depricating man being just that. Hard for me to say, but he seems a beautiful man.

Basically the Eagles were a band that became famous for the song Hotel California which was a ripoff of Jethro Tulls 1969 song “We used to Know.”
As far as rock guitarists there are Hendrix, Page, and a smattering of others. Ad nauseum.
In the rock jazz crossover we have steely Dans guitarist Becker and Randal. Listen....As far as I’m concerned you must go back along time and appreciate the incredible bands and musicians that recorded.

Remember and I agree, the most important thing you can do is play in front of people. Why? Because musicians make magic that needs to be shared. And once the nervousness subsides thru your playing your healing gifts ( the magic and synergy) shine through it all. Share your gift and be humble like Joe about it. But, do share and grow this way. You will be forever blessed if you do so!
Joe has always been one of my favorite guitarists, I saw him at a free concert at the Ohio State Fair in the early 70's and was still a big fan afterward. lol...
What a fascinating guy Joe is! So glad, he has given up drinking and is still making very good music. I discovered bis music only in 1978, when I was 15 and listening to a song on a dutch radio station called "Life's, been good". I was blown away by the intro riff and the whole song, so I wanted to know more about Joe's music. Thanks to my discovery I experienced bis collaboration with the Eagles and came to know about his earlier stuff in the James Gang. Just great American Classic hard rock from a time when handmade music was highly appreciated! Joe is one of those living musical "dinosaurs" proving that this kind of music is still exciting and worth not only to be remembered but to be listened to by future generations!
My dad was a guitarist, locally famous. Miss ya pa. He once challenged me to come up with a dictionary definition for the word music. If you set out to define it, the quest never ends.Note progression, harmony cadence, timbre, rhythm etc etc, on and on. It is undefinable. Beauty is in the ear of the listener. We took a TRS-80 and wrote a program to calculate the distance from one fret to the next in an effort to etch and plate a piece of circuit board material to make a guitar fret board. In that process we took that calculation and used it to play the notes that theoretically would be produced from a physical fret board with those dimensions. Turns out that perfect sucks. BAD! My dad ultimately proclaimed that is the imperfection, the irony, the surprising wrongness that makes it music and not some mechanical noise. Pure, perfectly timed, mathematically perfect frequency, sounds like shit, nobody wants to listen very long to pure midi soundtrack. It is the crap in a guitar that gives it character and interest, It is the flaws in an amp circuit that make it interesting to hear. It is the mistakes that make a musician unique and adorable. Keep on doing it wrong your own way, and someone will love it and to them it will be music. Thanks for all these years of joy Joe. Hardly a day goes by that I dont sing Life's been good.

Are we related?? That was one of the best summaries I have ever heard in the term music that I have ever read. You wrote down what I have been saying, in small snatches for years. I will never play a song more than 2 or 3 times in rehearsal, because it loses heart and groove and fire. A guitarist can plug in to any rig, and he will sound like himself. The way you pick, your attack, your bends and vibrato, your grip on the neck, and the way you fret every note comes from your soul. No rig will change that. Mistakes can end up being the best part of a song, but you must let that happen and let it flow. A wonderful statement, and more people need to heed your words my musical brother!!!

He is very intelligent and smart. Really enjoyed this interview. He is doing /did music for a documentary for the veterans. I am so impressed with him and his efforts. I am a retired ICU nurse at a veterans hospital. He jokingly says he has to go on the road to pay the bills.... :) He wanted to play guitar for Ray Charles......Bless him.

I knew Joe Walsh was special from the first time I heard Funk 49. And this interview bears out that Joe is without a doubt, not just an amazing musician and songwriter, but a real true genius. He is so "Aware of Life" and what's important that it's almost scary.

It all makes sense now. Joe’s exquisite intonation while playing slide guitar comes from trying to navigate that stubborn double reed oboe, one of the toughest instruments to play in tune.

Joe is the one (and only)guy I can honestly say that I agree with entirely. Everything he says is simple but brilliant wisdom.

One of the greatest humans that also plays guitar, sings, and writes amazing and timeless music...I was born in 1951 and remember a very similar childhood, raised in South Central Los Angeles...possibly one of the best tomes to be alive and experience youth...thank you Joe, for the music and the awesome memories! Jamming to Rocky Mountain Way is still one of my favorite songs to break the windows in my studio!
My Dad met Joe in the early 70's. Joe heard my Dad play in a studio session near where he was and got to BS ing with him. Joe asked my Dad "So who do you like as a guitar player?" My Dad had some thoughts but was afraid to tell Joe the truth cause he didn't know him yet. He said "well, I guess Hendrix is ok", Joe said, "Hendrix?" "Really?" Joe said, "You remind me of Roy Buchanan" My Dad said, "wow, you heard of Roy Buchanan?" Joe said "hell yeah!" I not only heard of him, I think he makes Hendrix look like a rookie!" My Dad said "I agree!" He's been doing what he does since the late 50's" (which is very true!!) Anyway Joe invited my Dad to go party with him and Dad said that when they sobered up, 4 days had passed!!! My Dad just passed away a few months ago but hearing Joe talk reminds me of my Dad and the stories he told which are pretty much the same! Glad Joe is still kickin cause by all rights, they both should have died years ago!!

I'm not saying Hendrix was bad, but if you watch some of the Documentaries of Roy, you'll see that what I said was true. 2, Jeff Beck was quoted as saying that Roy is probably the greatest guitar player ever! And If Jeff says it, there's got to be some weight behind it because Beck can play any style and is the king (today) of making sounds and tones that others would be hard pressed to do!
Another interesting tid bit is on the "behind the music" of Chicago, they were talking about Terry Kath and how he accidentally shot himself ( who was another awesome player that was ahead of his time) and the Sax player said that when they got done playing a "festival"( don't remember which one it was) Hendrix said to him " hey man, people say I'm great but that cat runs circles around me"!!
It's kind of like Columbus being credited for discovering America and our society being told this for so long but when we run into other evidence, it becomes clear that he didn't but for most, it's a hard pill to swallow!
Again, I like Hendrix and do think he was good, and yes, that show with Billy Cox was great!! He was experimenting and evolving! He was rising to his peak for sure! I just wish he didn't O.D. It would have been nice to see and hear things that he would have accomplished just like Jeff Beck did!

You know, another great unknown that killed himself was Danny Gatton. He was just starting to become known then I guess he ended it! He's known for teaching Joe Bonnemasa some stuff but Joe never adapted Dannys finger picking style.
Of course we can go on and on, but ultimately it started with Classical, Jazz, and then, Blues players. Those are the 3 formats that started it all!
I think music, overall has gotten too "simplified" and now, it's gotten to where you just push buttons on a machine at the right time and now that means you are "talented"? HA! What a joke music has turned into in this generation!
