The Doctor and the Rock Star (Joe Walsh of the Eagles) West of the West
Вставка
- Опубліковано 9 січ 2022
- This is the story of an odd couple - Dr. Carey Stanton, who owned Santa Cruz Island, and rock star Joe Walsh. Meeting in the 1970s through Marla Daily, they struck up an unusual, and unusually strong, bond that led to Joe putting on an Eagle’s concert to help raise the money for the Nature Conservancy’s purchase of Santa Cruz Island… and ultimately its protection forever.
A tale from West of West, Tales of California's Channel Islands.

Joe Walsh of the Eagles
I am now 70 and I have been a Joe Walsh fan from the James Gang days. I, and I am sure so many people, are so thankful that he didn't let drugs destroy him and that he got clean. He has given us a wealth of music and talent and himself ever since. I have the highest respect and admiration for him.
“I’m getting closer to my home…”
@@joeblow1942 Yep.
@@williampaul8556 Great song, eh?
Love and look up to Joe so much!
I was born in 1953 in the late 60s & 70s I found the Hippie movement & Rock & Roll with that came Alcohol & Drugs , I've lost most of my friends & I'm very lucky they didn't kill me , it took decades to get clean & sober what a ride ☮️
Joe Walsh is pure class. Period.
Just when I thought I couldn’t love Joe Walsh any more! Aside from being a mind blowing musician, he just seems to be such a wonderful man. He (as well as the island) are national treasures. I hope joe writes a book one day.
Couldn't agree more!
Is Joe a Christian?
Joe Walsh messaged me on Twitter and invited me to video chat with him I sorta declined and didn't reply back to him always thought what might've been. He mentioned to me that it was a rare opportunity to speak to him usually he doesn't approach fans I think he was right I couldn't believe it was really him tho you never know
Yes indeed, I'd love a book also.
The world became a better place when Joe Walsh decided to be sober. What a guy!
"I come here a lot in my head....in times of mental turmoil and everything is OK"....how powerful is that from Joe? Man, we all need a place like that at times in our life.
Joe Walsh is a National Treasure.
Joe Walsh is the golden heart of rock ‘n’ roll.
We all Agree!
Principles over profit is the best example for all children! Thank you Joe
Couldn't agree more!
Joe is such a unique person and unique musician. It's nice to have him on the planet!
Agreed!
I usually find myself loving 4 legged creatures much more than 2 legged, however I find Joe Walsh as an exception to that rule! When you look into someone’s eyes (4 legged or 2) and you see a soul, it is one of Gods many miracles . Joe is one of those miracles. 💕🎶🐾
I love Joe, seen him with the James Gang, the Eagles, and solo tours. We here in Ohio are very proud of Joe. Dude turned out alright.👍✌💖
Boy I'll say Joe's a good dude . I don't even like the Eagles. I like the old Eagles before Joe. But he is a great guy.
I would love to hang out with Joe Walsh.
Me too! I hope I can shake his hand someday, I have a great appreciation for Joe.
I'd like to have him as my guitar teacher!!!
You and me Both.. would LOVE to hear his Stories ❤
My wife and I have been to Santa Cruz Island many times on our sailboat but the best trip was as guests of Island Packers when we stayed in a cabin overlooking Chinese Harbor that was saved by a Joe Walsh donation. He is one of my musical heros.
beautiful place to stay.
"Walsh is an interesting bunch of guys"
Glenn Frey
Joe Walsh is one my heroes as a musician, recovered alcoholic/drug addict, and now...WOW! This man! I love him for this!
An absolutely inspiring person. When you think how close he was to being another "rock'n'roll casualty" it's a nothing short of a miracle that he turned things around. I can't help but wonder if the island and the connections he made with it and the people on it were there in the back of his mind when he was at his lowest and it gave him reason to be a different person. Thanks for your comment, Lucas. We think alike. From Tom in Texas.
JOE WALSH IS SUCH A GOOD MAN.
ONE OF THE GREATEST GUITAR PLAYERS. NEVER LOSE YOUR FAITH IN GOD. HE NEVER LEAVES US.
I visited Santa Cruz Island several times in the early 70’s. It was truly like visiting heaven for me. I will always remember Dr. Stanton. He offered me a ride once in his old Jeep. He had his small dog with him and I recognized it as a silky terrier. He seemed impressed that I did so.
I was going to post a comment, but after reading the first few...it's like..."I couldn't have said it better myself." Thank you Mr. Walsh! 🎸🎶💞
I just love Joe Walsh even more now than before.
"For from the beauty and greatness of created things, their original author, by analogy, can be seen." Wisdom, Chapter 13.
God Bless you Joe.
Anyone that doesn’t Love Joe is just incapable of Love... God Bless Joe 😇
Agreeded!
Thank you Joe, GOD bless you. So beautiful 💞
Who freaking knew Joe Walsh was so sophisticated.
Love the trash story, way to go.
Such a beautiful documentary.
This is so cool. I had no idea. Thank you Joe and friends for being so protective of this treasure.
You bet!
I heard Joe say that he wondered if his father, who died when he was just 20 months old (I cannot remember the exact words) but paraphrasing - Would he be proud of me? Joe in my mind there can be no doubt. Not in your rock stardom but in the man you have become. The more I learn about you the more I respect and admire you.
It would be nice if the entire planet was treated with this respect.
The modern Environmental movement started in the Channel Islands region but gets
amplified by events like this- If you know this region, you will love and preserve it.
I cried by the end of this video.
Thanks to all who have worked to preserve Santa Cruz Island.
Thanks to all who produced this video.
Thanks to Joe Walsh ❤️
Such a wonderful story, and what an amazing thing Joe is doing! Beautiful!
We agree!
I absolutely adore Joe Walsh. He's just real, speaks truth, can't beat that. PLUS, he kills the guitar.
Beautiful. God certainly did make that special place and glad that Joe and others have taken great care & financial support to ensure it continues to remain unspoiled. Really interesting story
He tells stories the way he sings... Simple yet so emotional...
And How!
Hoping more Musicians see this…..
Here is a Musical Mentor to thousands of aspiring musicians, telling the world that there is more to this life than the gig and the after-party… much more !!!!
He may never know how he has impacted any individual, but I’m sure he knows now what an example he is for All of Us !!!!
Thank You for documenting this Relationship for Us to be inspired by.
a long ways from Fancy Music on State Street in Santa Barbara to singing in a chapel on Santa Cruz Island, One Day at a Time is how that happened
Jammin Joe is the uncle ive always wanted.

That is awesome!
Joe Walsh for President
There is so much in this world don't know about. Thanks to the internet we can stumble upon videos and readable knowledge of so many things we didn't know of before. Who would have thunk Joe did this.
I enjoyed this insight to the island, the doctor and the rockstar.
Would never have guessed about this connection in a million years. I've been a fan of Joe's since his James Gang, solo years, and especially with the Eagles, and learn something new about him all the time. What an amazing story and it lives on!
God bless Joe and the island family.
What a great story. Thanks for this
Glad you enjoyed it
Most of us seem to grow physically, mentally and if we're lucky, spiritually. I started to see a different side of Joe Walsh after watching his Gibson setup video's. He seemed to be a kind hearted soul. After watching this video, I seem to see a humbled man! We can all learn a little from each other if we keep our minds open and try to be humble and kind! I'm always learning, it's what keep life interesting! Well done Joe! Keep up the good work and I'll be looking forward to more about your work!
Thank you Joe, for helping keep Santa Cruz Island this way. And, thank you for recording "Meadows".
Any time!
Well said!
My first time seeing Joe was during the Hell freezes over tour. I was 22 at the time, and he was like a mythical character to people my age. I thought he really stole the show with how he played and conducted himself for that huge part of their history
Thanks for sharing!
Joe gave Jimmy Page his MAIN Les Paul #1, gave Pete Townsend a Tweed Bandmaster and Gretsch 6021, gave LA studios guitar recording techniques, BUT.....this story of Santa Cruz island I would never have believed had I not just watched this video. What a life!!. There was Joe in Cleveland and Phil Keaggy in Youngstown and Me in Edinboro, PA...HAHAHAHAHA
Mentor Hullabaloo in the late 1960’s. Epic!
Gr8 and heart-warming story. Important Message. Thank You!!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Synchronicity at play here. In 1944 Carey Stanton's older brother, Edwin Jr., was killed in Normandy. We celebrate the few remaining heroes this week. It is the 80th anniversary of D-Day.
So glad this remains as it was! Beautiful!
Hi I just wanted to thank you again for being so supportive and following me on my journey. I love inspiring and encouraging others. People like you help me to keep showing up! Hope you are having an amazing day❤❤
This is new to me, thot I knew a lot about these wonderful islands off the West Coast near Santa Barbara. I worked on the Breakwater, watched the cowboys getting off the boat Vaquero & back on the next day headed for Santa Cruz. I knew about Dr. Stanton but not much about his personal history.
The friends of mine who were commercial divers BRAVED the waters around these islands, it's not all paradise when the winds come up. They really are one of Americas last untouched wilderness treasures.
Bless you Joe,.....for doing right by the doctor, your friend & showing how it's done.
Damn, Joe found his own heaven.
This world could use a lot more Joe Walsh.
Saw Joe in Canton a long time ago. I’m a WV kid of 73. Loved Joe forever.
What a beautiful story. Thanks for sharing.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I am approaching 15 years since the death of my son. The night he passed away the next morning I listen to his iPod and life‘s been good to me so far was the last song he was listening to. we both just love Joe Walsh and I still to this day always want to thank him because the last song Jimmy listen to I know he was singing loud and smiling!
Thanks for sharing. That is a sweet memory, I will pass it on.

It’s so difficult to understand if you haven’t had a drink or a drug addiction to get just how subtle and insidious addiction can be in the way it gets you even when you think you’ll NEVER EVER take anything again!
So true, it's so powerful and cunning and deadly, coming up on 7 years in November and so grateful for a second chance at life, saw Joe twice with the Eagles and remembered every bit of it and that right there is a gift
Thank you (and the Nature Conservancy) for saving this island. So much of our natural heritage is gone.
What a beautiful story. I’m so glad I happened upon this. I have loved Joe’s work, and now I know so much more about him.
Wowed by this. I’ve just known Joe as the wild party animal. This impressed me a lot. I admire his dedication to the preservation of the island.
Love and look up to Joe so much and am so glad he does this.
my first time seeing this and I thought I knew everything about Joe that was ever published., you learn something every day . God bless Joe and keep up the tough battle no one said it was going to be easy, But healthy

My memories of Joe Walsh go back his last night playing at "the Jail" in Strongsville, Ohio, the night before his going to LA to record the first James Gang Album.
Joe went through hell and emerged to be a different man from the rocker of his early years. Something like this does not surprise me a bit. Unknown to us, there was a wonderful spirit living in side that "nut job" that we all thought he was.
Although Joe is not a Cleveland, Ohio native, all of us from there and from those rocker years, have a special place in our hearts for him. I would dearly love to meet Joe, relate my little "Strongsville" story and thank him for some great music memories, After all "Life's ben good so far". ;-)
Get yourself a ham radio and give him a shout. WB6ACU. He’ll answer you, like an ordinary average guy.
Not often that I am unable to find words to say...
THIS is one of those times!
Thanks Joe! You have been making me feel good since the late sixties! Thanks for the smiles!
Rock on!
I just love joe walsh. He is cool.and funny and a musical genius
What a story! Thanks.
Thanks for listening
had no idea, god bless you Joe Walsh
God bless us all!
Way to go Joe. You are a most virtuous man.
That was so heart warming God bless Mr Stanton Joe and that beautiful island.🙏🏼❤️

Used to see Joe at JB's in Kent, Ohio with The James Gang....$1. cover charge.....
Joe, thanks for leading us off. Have a blessed day.

I remember Joe Walsh from way before the Eagles.
This is such an awesome story a very unique place here on earth how lucky Joe Walsh is to be part of it . The cherry on top of the hot fudge sundae
The best. Joe Walsh.
Thank you!
Joe Walsh is one of a kind, along with his music & there are no words,I will say, "He's one of my favorite song writers singers & guitarist to this day! He's so unique, just like his music! I've seen him with the Eagles 4 times, wouldn't have missed it for anything! ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
we think so, too!
AWESOME!! God, I love these people. Joe is a special special man and I love him so much.
Wow man I just found this it blew me away. I could watch an hour or more. You got a love Joe Walsh if you didn’t before now you know truly an amazing musician person D all of the above. He has been through a lot.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I always did like Joe Walsh. He was or steel is one of the great ones. Some of the songs he made were so cool like Rocky Mountain Way life‘s been good to me so far stay out all night long. This is one cool guitarist. I think he was wonderful with the Eagles he fit right in with them. Put a lot of character to that band gave them that good rock ‘n’ roll sound. Not that the Eagles weren’t good without him they were. The Eagles was one of mine all time favorite bands. Joe Walsh just added some spice to it. But still yet even with the Eagles or all by himself he is one hell of a guitar player one of my all time favorites along Live Joe Walsh I wish you more success as he lives on. Thanks Joe Walsh for all you have done for society especially tearing out hotel walls ha ha I wish you all the luck in the world❤️😁😃🎸🎼🎶
Its crazy how faithless young Californians and people in charge there are now.
Thanks Joe
Oh how I love that man!!! ❤
We do too…Thank for watching!
@talesfromchannelislands Thank you for posting! What a fantastic GIFT he is!!! 🥰🫠
That was beautiful. Thank you all.🎯
Glad you enjoyed it
I once spent 8 days with Joe in Hawaii. We slept once during those 8 days. It was a lot of guitar playing at the pool or in the room.
Wow! 8 days. That is amazing. Any of it recorded?
@@talesfromchannelislands Joe had a cassette tape recorder so some of it yes. And one day a local radio station came to the pool with a crew both video and audio and spend the day partying with us. I have no idea where that footage is but it’s out there somewhere. I’m not sure I would like it to see the light of day…I’ve grown up quite a bit since then and my kids would have a heyday seeing if! Let alone my wife!! 😳 We were surely looking like we had not slept in a while. I remember we all got sunburned from too much poolside time. But the room service was great both in the room and poolside.

Wow, such a great film. I grew up in Port Hueneme and we used to go out to the islands in our small cabin cruiser to enjoy the views and fish. I had no idea Joe Walsh and the Eagles (my favorite band) were instrumental in saving the island for all of us! Thanks Joe and thank you to Dr. Carey Stanton for your dedication to preserving this incredible island for all of us!
Thanks for sharing!
I have been boating to all of the Channel Islands while running commercial fishing, diving, and pleasure charter boats during the eighties and nineties. They are all unique and special. Even Avalon at Santa Catalina is nice at certain times. I probably anchored off of Santa Cruz more than the rest. Unfortunately, I never went ashore there. I too am grateful to all that Joe Walsh has done to keep the island from becoming another Catalina.
What a great story. I admire Joe and stanton. Alot of folks would maybe want to make money from somewhere as beautiful as this ,but glad it was preserved .wish more more people would have this outlook. God bless you Joe .

Joe Walsh is very good friends with Drew Carey. On an episode of the "Drew Carey Show," Drew invited Joe over to his house as he was having his friends meet some beautiful models he met at his job. Joe said he wanted to make sure this was a party of women models not toy models as he had to stay away from glue LOL
Oh No!
We heard about him gluing stuff to the ceiling. Dave Sparo the manager gave a talk inOhio 2 weekends ago.
Joe is a classy guy.
Joe Walsh ..el mejor guitarrista del mundo ..soy fan de eagles desde hace muchos años ..saludos desde Jalisco Mexico
I saw you at the Hard Rock in Vegas, circa 2017. Great time. 😀
Yes it was!
Joe's resume includes being Ringo Starr's brother in law, and godfather of Roy Orbison III.
