Years ago, I heard an interview of either a record producer, or another musician, talking about working with studio musicians. They said Joe was one of the best studio guys ever. You played the demo for him once, played the tune with him once, then hit Record. Complete natural musician.
Yes! This is a classic, Joe gets progressively hammered throughout this video, we used to play this over and over in the Guitar Center I worked at, Legendary!!!
God Dammit! I take about five mins to do what they did in 30 seconds. My brother told me to always wrap the string under about three times before tightening it. Who else did or does this? Been doing that for 44 years. Live aqnd learn. I wish Joe never joined the fucking eagles. I hate that mainstream bullshit! I'm a Sabbath, Stooges Motorhead type guy. BUT I love talent and guitar players that have that music inside of them like joe, Tommy Bolin, Dave Mason, Rory Gallagher, Pat Travers, Johnny winters, Mark Farner, Leslie West. You know Guys who are music inside and out and play with soul and feeling. No Bruce- He had it once but that was a long time ago.
The tip about how he leaves a bit of length on the string, then bends it down to make it impossible to poke yourself, is genius. So simple, yet, I've never seen that before. That makes a lot of sense. Anyone else have cats that like to rub their face on the guitar tuners while you play? It always worries me they're going to get poked by a string.
Excellent insight into Joe and his sound. Tom Kolb did a great job pulling us into Joe’s inner workings , while getting Joe to open up and share himself. Excellent piece that will stand the rest of time.
Never use WD40 on pots. The reason pots get scratchy is due to not using them. Use DeOxit instead because it cleans and lubricates or just turn them back and forth until the scratchy goes away .
What I’ve always appreciated about Joe Walsh is that he truly is a minimalist; never over plays. People who play ever riff they know in every song lack creativity. Joe plays some iconic riffs though.
What is “ever riff they know?” Does Coltrane lack creativity? How about Mozart? Minimalism is great and works just fine-you don’t have to dog fifty musicians to praise one. How about, he skins a cat just fine, and leave it there 😂.
Why do you say drugs? Don't you think eccentric people are for real? I know people like this. If they were on drugs, I don't they would be playing this good bro,

Indeed, Joe was told by Henley and Frey that he had to get clean in order to be part of the Eagles reunion in 1994. Don Felder has confirmed that in his autobiography and that he personally had to drive Joe to a rehab clinic in Santa Monica.

In my opinion the best guitar playing Joe ever recorded was on James Gang Live In Concert. 1971. He’s on fire throughout and the tone runs from silky and bluesy to raw and heavy. Incredible feel and fire. If you haven’t heard it, check it out. 👍🏼
I was very fortunate to have attended that amazing concert, in 1971 at Carnegie Hall in NYC! I was only 15 years old. Of the countless hundreds of concerts I've been to over the years, that was one of the best and most memorable. I stood in the front, right by the stage, directly in front of the massive P.A. system... It was, to say the least, very loud. In fact, I FELT the music as much as I could hear it. I was thrilled to be able to relive that incredible, magical night again and again, after the release of, "The James Gang -Live In Concert" I consider it one of the greatest live rock albums ever recorded... up there with, "Live at Leads" and "The Allman Brothers - Live At Fillmore East". To me, Joe Walsh is a guitar god! I was also at the Fillmore East the night, "Dereck and the Dominos - Live At The Fillmore" was recorded... But that's a whole 'nother story...
@RIO RUSTY RSTUDS I heard a lot of stories about those days from a buddy who was there. Don Felder, the Leadon brothers, the Mudcrutch members...I think Stephen Stills may have even spent some time up there. Quite a talent pool all lived in proximity to that one park downtown. Did you get all your gear from Dub's too?
I like this suggestion, although I'm trying to understand exactly why that would be the case...I'm thinking it has something to do with adjusting the guiyarwhile it's laying flat compared to turning it 90 degrees like u would for playing position...could u fill me in on y u say that?
Joe must have been a real treat for his parents and teachers back in the day. I think that if he hadn't found music (or maybe music hadn't found him) he might have spent the majority of his life in an insane asylum. Also, without Joe, the eagles wouldn't have been half as good as they turned out to be! Joe is truly one of a kind. The world won't be the same when he's gone.
Not to diminish Joe's contribution, some documentary show the Eagles were nothing 'till Joe brought the hard edge, but I think Don Henley played his part, pun intended. Being a drummer, I often wondered if the drums ever recorded like the writer envisioned. Well on a Don Henley song, you can bet they do because he's the one behind the kit!
Loved seeing his rendition of help me through the night, always surprised he could play it without his emotions getting in the way due to his daughters loss :(
I love the GREATLY DROPPED open G tuning he played in for "Indian Summer on the Gibson ES-295. A hugely gifted entertainer that almost bought the farm. Glad he's still around to play for us, but The Eagles have to go... ever since Don Felder was excused, and then Glenn passed... that should have been it. Now Vince Gill??? Great or not, it's a square peg in a round hole.
I absolutely Love Joe Walsh......however come on Joe I realize this is over 30 years ago, but how can you possibly forget that we always tune "UP' to the note and never DOWN !!!
This reminds me of that odd streaming show "Drunk History"- anybody seen it? Except this is a professional partyier in the zenith of his 24/7 high period explaining the unexplainable quite clearly while also being utterly blasted. That you for your service Joe!!!
Joe seems like the kind of guy who requires his touring guitarists perform a setup to his standards. And they don’t get a guitar tech until they do. He’s a blue collar guy to the core.
He just tightened the truss rod on a ‘58 Les Paul that already had back bow on it. Lol... I appreciate the willingness to show how to set up a guitar, but damn do it the correct way..
This is actually one of the best guitar instructional I’ve ever seen.
I was thinking the same thing😂

But that's a whole 'nother story...
mrska66 That’s awesome 👍🏼
@RIO RUSTY RSTUDS I heard a lot of stories about those days from a buddy who was there. Don Felder, the Leadon brothers, the Mudcrutch members...I think Stephen Stills may have even spent some time up there. Quite a talent pool all lived in proximity to that one park downtown. Did you get all your gear from Dub's too?
I ❤ Joe Walsh.
RIP Rick the Bass Player
Never intonate a guitar on the bench. Always in playing position.
I like this suggestion, although I'm trying to understand exactly why that would be the case...I'm thinking it has something to do with adjusting the guiyarwhile it's laying flat compared to turning it 90 degrees like u would for playing position...could u fill me in on y u say that?
@@andrewtoebbe3885 yup I imagine pressure up on the neck when it's on the bench under its own weight , can't imagine there is a huge difference
@benicecunt o.k. you cannot intonate out every little bit of movement in the wood all the time. Nice name
When he speaks, Walsh sounds like a white version of Flava Flave.
😂
Ha ha
HAHAHAHA love that he is cleaning pots with WD40... wow SO NOT what people say to do. But Joe knows what works
Love the warning in the beginning
Joe must have been a real treat for his parents and teachers back in the day. I think that if he hadn't found music (or maybe music hadn't found him) he might have spent the majority of his life in an insane asylum.
Also, without Joe, the eagles wouldn't have been half as good as they turned out to be!
Joe is truly one of a kind. The world won't be the same when he's gone.
In the Eagles documentary, Glenn Frey says that Walsh was "an interesting bunch of guys."
Damn right on that!!!
Hes a great bunch of guys!
I say that with much love and respect for Joe. He's the only interesting part of the Eagles, IMO
Joes Two Finger Method lmfao
Having perfect pitch doesn’t hurt.
Loved seeing his rendition of help me through the night, always surprised he could play it without his emotions getting in the way due to his daughters loss :(
That goldtop ES-295 is gorgeous.
Awsome video, and getting to watch a setup,as well as it being done up close,on a real 1958 Les paul burst was really cool.
The Work they do on the guitar is very important
I love the GREATLY DROPPED open G tuning he played in for "Indian Summer on the Gibson ES-295. A hugely gifted entertainer that almost bought the farm. Glad he's still around to play for us, but The Eagles have to go... ever since Don Felder was excused, and then Glenn passed... that should have been it. Now Vince Gill??? Great or not, it's a square peg in a round hole.
Notice Joe is wearing a "Don't Panic" button, and halfway through the video, the "Don't" is Sharpied out
I absolutely Love Joe Walsh......however come on Joe I realize this is over 30 years ago, but how can you possibly forget that we always tune "UP' to the note and never DOWN !!!
Lol! How many albums have you sold and how many hits do you have?
This reminds me of that odd streaming show "Drunk History"- anybody seen it? Except this is a professional partyier in the zenith of his 24/7 high period explaining the unexplainable quite clearly while also being utterly blasted. That you for your service Joe!!!
What did you expect, professor walsh brimming with professionalism and impeccable expertise?
Yikes. Was this recorded before he got sober? Indian Summer, man…
A nice man and a true original master
wasted or not....he is a great guitar player with so many excellent songs
Joe seems like the kind of guy who requires his touring guitarists perform a setup to his standards. And they don’t get a guitar tech until they do. He’s a blue collar guy to the core.
The Patience thing Mr. Walsh was talking about I think is essential and requires self controlled discipline.
He just tightened the truss rod on a ‘58 Les Paul that already had back bow on it. Lol...
I appreciate the willingness to show how to set up a guitar, but damn do it the correct way..
that’s funny, you giving lesson to Joe Walsh about guitar
@@filramil he's not wrong! I was watching that going, "wait, what the hell? he's trying to straighten the neck out going the wrong way with the rod!"
This could become a "cult video" for every guitar player.
the ted nugent one is pretty good too
"That's why we're all here and we don't have jobs"
Addiction can happen to ANYONE. Don't judge.
The term Idiot Savant applies a little, yeah? Maybe just a little...love ya, Joe
(been a helluva ride) 😎
Yep, Joe was hammered, lol. He was nodding off between takes and had to be awakened to do the next bit.
