This is a pretty definitive answer for a good question. At the most basic level, it just boils down to timing--Palpatine was forced to make the decision the night before he was expected by his Sith Master to appoint him Co-Chancellor. That appointment would have likely brought many problems to Palpatine's own vision of how to assume control of the galaxy, yet he had very little time to act. I've said it before, I'll say it again (and this is not necessarily in line with modern or EU canon, just my theory) Plagueis obtained immortality through essence transfer, but it can only happen if he is killed by a powerful force user, and he can jump into his killer's body at the moment of death. I believe Plagueis tricked Palp into killing him, and took his body. Ultimately he wanted to transfer into Skywalker DNA, since Plagueis is responsible for the Skywalker lineage. As Palp, he groomed Anakin for the same reason, but ultimately decided not to jump into Anakin's destroyed, limbless agonizing body... Instead keeping him around to do his bidding. Years later he attempted to seduce Luke into killing him... Think about allllll the dialogue between Sidious and Luke in ROTJ... it's 95% "kill me, Luke". He was trying to get killed so that he could jump into LUKE! I don't believe that Sidious died after Vader threw him either. If a death happens off camera, it's not confirmed. It works because it works. Lightsabers aren't meant to be a technology that can be replicated in real life. They're partially a form of magic, one based on creating a bond between the user and a powerful object connected with the natural world, usually the kyber crystals, though some very clever force users managed to use things like glass shards or certain technology. This bond is then enhanced via the "frozen beam" technology from the far reaches, creating what we know as a lightsaber.
Pope Palpatine was a Sick master. Anyways, when Jedis die, they can come back with the light. When Sith die, they can come back with the darkeness. Duhh.
Well, the immortality trick wasn't quite right. See, you gotta hand in 200 credits to me to be immortal. 20 only gets you living on the internet. Yes, ppl, I take bribes. Now shut up.
In the original concept of the story, Plageuis wasn't so soft in wanting to share power with his student. He had created Anakin on purpose after somehow choosing Shmi Skywalker. Then planned to take Anakin as his more permanent apprentice. Aka he was going to kill Palpatine when he was no longer useful. Somehow, Palpatine figured it out. Got scared, and "decided he had learned all that he could from Plageuis" as the original Wookiepedia article had once said back in the day. This was a few years after Revenge of the Sith. Before the Darth Plageuis novel. When the concept for the character made him even more ruthless than Palpatine. Palps probably didn't like coming to know that he was just a means to an end. Like his relationship with Dooku, with Dooku being subservient and only a placeholder. Plageuis was using Palpatine as a placeholder for a much more powerful student. But he underestimated Palpatine in the end. I wish we had seen that Plageuis. It would have made him even darker than he already is in the novel. In fact when that article was written, it also said that a Darth Plageuis novel was supposed to have been written back then. But they felt a backstory for Palpatine would "ruin the mystique" surrounding him. In the end though they did write the novel. With the exception of the Darth Bane trilogy, Darth Plageuis' novel was the best of the Expanded Universe. Bane would have been proud.
Every sith apprentice wants to kill their master. Its kinda their thing. The master knows it. The apprentice knows it. The apprentice also knows when he kills his master, becomes the master, then takes on an apprentice of his own, that apprentice will try to kill him at some point. Just part of sithdom.
He did, but a Sith Apprentice wanting to kill the Master is a constant thing. If the apprentice doesn't hate the master early on, the master isn't teaching the apprentice correctly.
The thing I love about your channel...you post both canon AND Legends content, but you specify at the beginning where your source material is coming from. I've had to unfollow quite a few channels because they don't bother to differentiate between the two and I cannot support that as it will only lead to confusion among casual "fans", who are now Lucasfilms target audience instead of the fans, and that confusion will only lead to Star Wars getting further dumbed down for the masses. Thank you for posting responsibly! Now if only more channels would do so...
The disturbance in the force would had have to have come from Darth Plagueis since Darth Maul ends up surviving after the fight against Obi Wan on Naboo.. Could Plagueis be alive?
I never understood why Plagueis chose to have an apprentice in the first place. If he truly sought immortality, then he'd better stay alone right? He doesn't need a successor, it's just an unnecessary threat.
I love the plagueis book... Best story ever... If you've read or listened to the book there are spots in the book where they talk about feeling the force give in or kickback against them for what they are doin in the world so what if the feeling Palpatine had after he killed plagueis and mauls death was a kickback from the force for prematurely killing his master... Cool idea...
But why Plagueis got drunk like teenager and died in his bed.I mean we are talking about the mighty sith lord who almost achieved immortalty right? Thats just stupid. There must be another ending
what sith lord in the storys does not have a stupid end when you think about it maul cut in half by a fucking noob padawan dooku just stands there and does not say anything as he is slowly killed palpatine gets thrown down a shaft by a gimp (why was there a fucking hole in his throne room??)
They shouldn't have brought back Palpatine in IX, they should have brought back Plagueis. Ageless, watching and waiting for the better part of a century, knowing Sidious's empire would eventually fail and leave an easy power vacuum to fill.
I need to go back and look through legends. I didn't realise there was a real EU story there. Darth Plagu3s you are no match a real Sith lord
Great job on the video!
Thanks!
No problem!
By the way, can you do a video about the Jedi who helped the Rebel Alliance and the New Republic?
0:10
That's how I imagined he looked like lol
Would’ve it been cool if Plaugeis was the villain in the sequels? The Sith Lord who cheated death, and with palpatine gone, could rule the galaxy as he saw fit? I’d pay some serious coin to see that series.
Well he couldn't exactly kill him after he became immortal
You cant put yourself on the operaring table when you are dead or got your arms cut off.
@@poutineausyropderable7108 prove that you can’t with the force
Ah, yes, the perfect signature conclusion of that brilliant novel.
Good thing Palpatine is known for his aggravated impatience. Otherwise...
Well that´s probably only Legends now, since "Rise of the Last Skywalker"
Maybe Palpatine gave himself immortality somehow and was able to live for a very long time
Haven’t watched the video yet but I have a feeling the question in the title answers itself.
Hey can you make a video about how lightsabers works
just watch the clone wars they have 3 episodes about it
"What about the Clone Wars attack on the lightsaber?"
good meme @@imperialguard28
It works because it works. Lightsabers aren't meant to be a technology that can be replicated in real life. They're partially a form of magic, one based on creating a bond between the user and a powerful object connected with the natural world, usually the kyber crystals, though some very clever force users managed to use things like glass shards or certain technology. This bond is then enhanced via the "frozen beam" technology from the far reaches, creating what we know as a lightsaber.
Its a beam of plasma powered by a battery and focused by a crystal, both of which are contained in the hilt.
This is why it would be so cool if Snoke was plagueis
Do an Imperial Knights video.
Palpatine: Well if I can kill him, then it's probably not worth learning is it
Let's introduce a new meme to this comment section
*THE SACRED TEXTS*
Didn't we burn those?

I'm sorry sir, it's time for you to leave.
Read them have you? Page turners, they were not.
Robert the Dude pls no
Never knew Darth Plagueis was alive during The Phantom Menace. That's cool.
Pope Palpatine was a Sick master.
Anyways, when Jedis die, they can come back with the light. When Sith die, they can come back with the darkeness. Duhh.
This explained a lot thank you
Eh, It kinda worked. I'm Stuck in the internet forever, if you can really call that immortality.
Well, the immortality trick wasn't quite right. See, you gotta hand in 200 credits to me to be immortal. 20 only gets you living on the internet. Yes, ppl, I take bribes. Now shut up.
And now you have 69 likes
@@angelofdeath8739 Cash or credit? My wife cant is going to kill me.

Why didn’t Darth Plagueis not sense palpatine wanting to kill him
Because he wanted palpatine to tell the tale of Darth Plagueis the wise
His foresight was robbed from him by his master.
Every sith apprentice wants to kill their master. Its kinda their thing. The master knows it. The apprentice knows it. The apprentice also knows when he kills his master, becomes the master, then takes on an apprentice of his own, that apprentice will try to kill him at some point. Just part of sithdom.
Cause by the time he could palpatine would have him to drunk to sense it
He did, but a Sith Apprentice wanting to kill the Master is a constant thing. If the apprentice doesn't hate the master early on, the master isn't teaching the apprentice correctly.
Great vid
Palpatine would have still gone with his first choice.
One life-time of being the master?
Or an eternity of being the puppet?
I love those lore videos. Lets me learn a lot about legends
i thought palpatine did learn immortality from his teacher, and then killed him, because teacher was of no use
I was just watching your Videos!!!
Ironic. He cant save others from death, but can save himself. (Palpatine will return)
"And he taught his apprentice everything he knew"- Palpetine to Anakin on Coruscant. Legends AND cannon.
He didn't know immortality, so even if he did, that still wouldn't have mattered.
@@MegaPieru3000 how can you be sure? Ian McDiarmid IS in episode 9.
@@kecharabautistauzushcuc6063 Oh right, I forgot. Hmm, let's see.
Thanks so much for the compliments! I also list the sources used for each videos at the end for people who wish to check them out as well :)
Plagueis was probably mocking palpatine from beyond the grave after his apprentice's failure.
Well...maybe Papa Palps did find immortality, considering he’s somehow alive for Episode 9
That shit never happened dog 🤣
1:55 Imagine seeing this in your room
Looks like Darth Squidward
I just wanna know if palpatine was doing body spirals and screaming “EHHHHHHHH” when he was younger
Probably, and I bet he had an even tighter spiral, possibly more rotations too
The disturbance in the force would had have to have come from Darth Plagueis since Darth Maul ends up surviving after the fight against Obi Wan on Naboo.. Could Plagueis be alive?
Good point.
He obviously did find out how to become immortal in the new Star Wars
Palatine sounds like orichimaru with that essence transfer
I never understood why Plagueis chose to have an apprentice in the first place. If he truly sought immortality, then he'd better stay alone right? He doesn't need a successor, it's just an unnecessary threat.
He needed him to rule the galaxy as his puppet
But yes he should have learnt immortality first then rules the republic with a human puppet
3:39 That doesn't look anything like a younger version of Ian McDiarmid. It looks more like Ryan Gosling.
I wasn’t aware he killed plagius off screen in the phantom menace timeline
Interesting isn’t it!
Agreed
I love the plagueis book... Best story ever... If you've read or listened to the book there are spots in the book where they talk about feeling the force give in or kickback against them for what they are doin in the world so what if the feeling Palpatine had after he killed plagueis and mauls death was a kickback from the force for prematurely killing his master... Cool idea...
Roses are red, you have beautiful eyes. Have you ever heard the tragedy of Darth Plagueis the wise?
Roses are red, get hit by a board. Are you by any chance a Sith lord?
Well, that took a lot of guts on Palpatine's part to give up immortality just to avoid being a figurehead forever in the shadow of his master.
But Darth Maul didn't die? Why was there a disturbance?
Continuity error, I suppose.
Julian Staveley Plagueis birthed a being through the force (Anakin), hence causing the disturbance in the force.
Palpatine figured out how to put his essence into clone bodies
But why Plagueis got drunk like teenager and died in his bed.I mean we are talking about the mighty sith lord who almost achieved immortalty right? Thats just stupid. There must be another ending
Taurol depends on his level of tolerance to alcohol
what sith lord in the storys does not have a stupid end when you think about it
maul cut in half by a fucking noob padawan
dooku just stands there and does not say anything as he is slowly killed
palpatine gets thrown down a shaft by a gimp (why was there a fucking hole in his throne room??)
simple, because Palpatine outsmart him
@@scottgrasser9737 Palpatines "death" or when he was stuck in chaos was when his spirit got trapped by every single jedi who ever lived.

Wow, I didn't know killing Plagueis was as late as the invasion of Naboo. I imagined it as happening way back.
He did learn immortality. Who's here after ROS
Plagueis made the mistake of making Palpatine turn into the *entire Senate.*
Wouldn’t it not be possible for him to kill plagueis after he achieved immortality
Because you know
He’s immortal
Depends on the kind of immortality
no that's invincibility. Immortality is different.
id love to see a movie or series with a setting of Palpatine early years as sith apprentice leading up to him killing plagueis
I knew about shadows of the empire where palp does cloning and Luke goes Dark Side, but after rewatching ep3, it makes it seem like the way palp knows how to bring someone back / keep someone alive is through the integration of technology.
