Nah, it's silly. The quarry wasn't the problem. Her son overestimating his swimming abilities, getting a cramp, and not knowing how to float killed him
@@aidanaldrich7795 It's great that you're an expert and all, but how do you know he didn't hit a really cold patch of water and lose feeling in his limbs, or get sucked under by an underground stream/outlet, or breathe in toxic gases leaching up from something on the bottom like Sulfur Dioxide and get faint or sick? If it makes you feel better to think that swimming in an old mining pit is safe, then go ahead, no one is stopping you. But not everybody's son or daughter is an expert swimmer like you, so they might want to keep their non-expert swimmer kids out of a quarry so they don't drown.
@Cedrick Sean C. Cruƶ No, just "the dangers of swimming". The quarry had literally nothing to do with his death. He had a cramp and drowned. What, do you think any random lake just magically pushes you up to the surface again if you get a cramp and go down?
I grew up swimming in a quarry, diving from the highest point I could find and swimming across it. I remember being terrified of not making it across. I was only around twelve at the time. Only one of the many, MANY times I should have died as a youngster, I'm 60 now.
Also, quite a number of quarry lakes can be toxic as well. Remember, some of these ponds can contain arsenic, fertilizers, and toxic poisons which is something you don't want to jump into.
Even more common is the silky sediment that changes the waters density and as a result makes you less buoyant. It also increases the resistance meaning you need a lot more energy and strength to swim in it. I'm not sure why this isn't mentioned as it's a really common danger and a HIDDEN danger.
Although they didn’t give the exact reason why he died, here’s my best conclusion: He jumped into the water, and he was met with cold temperatures, which caused his muscles to tighten and cramp. Because of this, he didn’t have the strength to bring himself up and to swim on the surface. He then drowned. This is the best I have right now.
This is a very real concern but this particular case him and his friends tried to swim across the quarry and he either got cramps or got too tired and drowned
RudolphTheTeddy I actually guessed by looking at the different ideas in the comment section. I took in everyone’s idea and made it into by own in paraphrase. I didn’t look at the description.

There is no more danger in a quarry than jumping into any unknown body of water. About 400 drown in pools and spas a year. It’s almost even with 21% in pools, 25% in lakes, 27% in rivers, 11% in oceans and the balance in ponds, quarries etc. 70% of drowning is caused by lack of swimming ability. Which is probably what caused her son’s death.

Horrible reporting once again! So what was the cause of death? How exactly did he die? Sounds like he just drowned, which means he wasn’t a good swimmer. If he wasn’t a good swimmer, this could’ve happened in a swimming pool just as well! So unless he got snagged on a dangerous piece of equipment, there is no more danger swimming in a quarry for that guy who died then in ANY body of water! So why say quarries can be “death traps”?!?
Jack Malcolm your right, it isn’t, and if only you KNEW by way of THIS video you would be right. But since OBVIOUSLY you don’t have a clue either...shut up and stop wasting my time with a guess, a crappy one at that..

@mark bender I used to think the same thing until I dated a guy once who couldn't swim. I tried to teach him to float on his back and I swear he just could not do it. Lol
I grew up across the street from a quarry. The only time I ever got hurt was stubbing my toe really hard when getting a running start to jump off the main cliff. Since I was a kid, they've added spray paint to mark dangerous cliffs where rocks and other things may be lurking beneath the water below, several filters throughout to keep the water clean (I used to straight up swim through algae as a kid) and lifeguards at every popular swimming spot. They paddle around on canoes. You also need to sign a waiver when entering which wasn't there when I was growing up. The coolest but scariest thing I would do is swim to the island that we had. It's only about 100 yards away, but while swimming there you can put your head underwater and open your eyes to see a super deep, giant black hole. It always got cold when swimming over it.
@@zanecosgrove4820 What I think they meant to say was that someone who was in the same graduating class (same grade) as them died doing this a week before their actual graduation.
Quarries can be great places to swim as long as caution is taken. Any body of water can be dangerous without lifeguards present. Cliff jumping is not for the faint of heart and unless you have someone ready to assist, if needed, it is incredibly risky.
Juliana Aldous Atkinson I'm saying, if that weren't the case, and he just didn't know if he could swim in the water. But you're right, he probably did get caught on something. ;D

coliniscolin actually when you jump into a quarries the water is first shallow so your confident but as you walk you take surer steps since you can't see the bottom. Once you step over the edge you plummet because there is a whirlpool effect at the bottom that Sucks you in not to mention your foot could get stuck in construction equipment and you can't see so..... ant to add to that, using the water above you to go to the surface is useless your fighting against the water so your basically a goner😐😐😐😐😐not trying to be rude or anything😊☺️

this has nothing to do with quarries...just swimming ability.
They said even on a 95 degree day where some of the surface water is nice and warm you can quickly find yourself swimming in 45 degree water. No one has "swimming ability" for water that cold. Michael Phelps would drown trying to swim through that cold of water. Maybe the geography of the quarry stops a lot of sunlight from hitting the water... maybe the bottom has some effect... I don't know..
At best you'll only be too exhausted to swim anymore after 30 minutes in water that cold... at worst you'll just go unconscious and start breathing water.

Shut up, James!

Also, quite a number of quarry lakes can be toxic as well. Remember, some of these ponds can contain arsenic, fertilizers, and toxic poisons which is something you don't want to jump into.
I agree, I would never swim in a quarry.
Even more common is the silky sediment that changes the waters density and as a result makes you less buoyant. It also increases the resistance meaning you need a lot more energy and strength to swim in it. I'm not sure why this isn't mentioned as it's a really common danger and a HIDDEN danger.
shouldn't sediment in the water make you *more* buoyant?@@monoculosofficial9934
Nothing that isn’t in our food and drinking water already
Although they didn’t give the exact reason why he died, here’s my best conclusion: He jumped into the water, and he was met with cold temperatures, which caused his muscles to tighten and cramp. Because of this, he didn’t have the strength to bring himself up and to swim on the surface. He then drowned. This is the best I have right now.
This is a very real concern but this particular case him and his friends tried to swim across the quarry and he either got cramps or got too tired and drowned

There is no more danger in a quarry than jumping into any unknown body of water. About 400 drown in pools and spas a year.
