Honestly I really liked the quarry as it was, it was a beautiful view.
Making it a flat concrete jungle takes out its whole appeal,
but I suppose it wasn't really a safe place for tourists to go in terms of how easy it could be to fall off into the quarry.

This quarry supplied stone for railway ballast (as did another little known quarry at Chatswood). Hornsby is a major intersection of North, North Shore, and Northern lines (towards Queensland)
It was a very nice walking place as well as an off road bike track.
I hope they didn't waste money draining before filling.. if they filled with the water in, the water would drain like if you step into an overfilled bath..
The Hornsby Council that made this project:
    1. Put in a Hedge Maze in at a time of water restrictions - the hedge died down and vandals removed the rest of the probably $100,000 plus cost.
    2. Developed a multi million $ Equestrian centre in an area where there was 4 people who use it. The 4 people? Included 2 daughters of one of the Council members.
    3. Developed a modern jetty complex in a little used area.. Who used it - yep- Council members had their boats tied up there.
Meanwhile a pedestrian over bridge that was VERY old - think 1930's with time dessicated roof panels falling on peoples heads and sewerage backup down some of the laneways went unfixed.

    • @RangaTurk

I thought Bombo and Martins Creek near Dungog provided the railway ballast.

Why was the council forced to buy a site left in this derelict and dangerous state from a mining business? Why are ratepayers having to pay the shortfall? Why aren’t there laws In place to force landowners to do the right thing and not shaft their environmental neglect onto tax and rate payers? I think that’s called individualising the gains and socialising the losses. Notwithstanding these issues the council is doing s good job.

  • @amodelman7

Regardless of who’s left footing the bill for this project, I believe it will be absolutely wonderful for the local area residents and for tourism. I’ve seen this quarry back in the late 90’s, so it would be a shame if something wasn’t done to make it into something useful for everyone.

The trails are now all open. I rode it yesterday. 2 tunnels under the road allow access to all areas of the trails. This keeps the bikes seperate from the trucks carrying the rock from the north connex tunnel to the quarry. We often bash the politicians (and rightly so) but this time they've really looked after us.
