I always loved this song. Even more, when I learned that it dates back to the 1600's in some version or another. Iceland , Finland, Russia, Sweden and Norway all had some version of this song in their history.
@Catherine S. Todd I never believe anything from Wiki, or definitely nothing from Gaggle. But i believe the song has Celtic roots, which probably took parts of other and produced the early version. In fact if you look, most music can be tracked back through Celtic, Blues, even Jazz. Just look at the structure and timing. Modern rock is derived from early Celtic.
This particular Zep song never seems old and outdated. This band was and will always be one of the greatest bands in the history of rock n roll. True masters at their art.
This is somewhat o fa cover, I think the original goes back to Leadbelly. Not being a jerk here, thought I'd share what I've learned. I respect and appreciate the original, but I like what Zep did with it better. Such a primal groove. 🎶😊🎶
@@XI_Daisy_XI It's described as "traditional", meaning its origins are too old to know for sure. LZ chose to have the guy hanged at the end, even though the hangman had had his silver, gold...... and sister. Hangmen aren't to be trusted!
Thank You, Led Zeppelin, For all the wonderful music and memories. Your music will continue to span many generations to come. Thank you for sharing your talents with the rest of the world.
Love how Led Zeppelin mixes genres, eras, and instruments. Robert has incredible voice control. The song starts off smooth and a little melancholy, then it gets faster and more upbeat with the hope and anxiety of the main character.
