why don't people realize that there's more than just Manhattan, there are FOUR OTHER BOROUGHS and each of them have a lot to offer. Honestly i think you guys will be fine if you're near the A Train and have some creativity and optimism
M Camara i think most people who want to move to new york city want to live IN the city
im trying to look for an apartment in nyc now and it is very stressful!...and im getting hit with a bunch of scams
***** Search it online, there you will find some more results ... it will help your search !
definitely one of the most helpful videos ive seen on moving to NYC! thank you!!
A guy from London moved to NYC and wrote an article about his experience in finding an apartment in the city.
If you are moving to NYC, read this:
www.theguardian.com/money/2016/may/21/renting-flat-new-york-london?CMP=oth_b-aplnews_d-1
there used to be no fee apartments. now if you find the apartment by yourself, the broker still gets paid 20% of the annual rent even though he didn't do anything. Landlords want security deposits -- good luck getting it back when you want to leave. If you want to break your lease, you are legally liable for the rest of the lease.
Also, keep in mind that 50% of your salary will go to NY state tax, NYC tax, Federal tax etc... I am not exaggerating.
Do not come here expecting it to be easy. New Yorkers are finding it hard to live here.
NYC it's not just downtown Manhattan, it's composed of the Bronx, Staten island, Brooklyn, and Queens.
BCANIVAL No one wants to live in Staten Island and that's just the truth
No mention of roaches and rats. When I was a student, to help pay for my tuition, I painted a Doctor's penthouse overlooking Central Park. Prime real estate without the Trump name. The place was literally covered in wall to wall cockroaches. Absolutely discusting! Just because you're a doctor and are well off, in New York City, the cockroaches don't discriminate, and they like a good view as much as you do.
I mentioned them in another video:
ua-cam.com/video/ROK1aL0J7go/v-deo.html
Vikingdescendent they are crawling in the walls, pipes everywhere. I'm surprised more aren't seen in restaurants
Try Miami, FL. I lived there quite a while ago, but I was ready to accuse the exterminator of spraying a fertility potion instead of roach poison. After he left, they all came out. I even found a couple in the refrigerator, still alive. Yecchhh!
Very helpful video!! Where can you find a no fee apartment that isn't a scam?
+Ruth Marren I'm working on a video that will show how to find a no fee apartments in nyc, so please check back soon for updates. Meanwhile, in order to avoid apartments scams please watch the following video I made this summer:

+Rose Ashley I've found all my apartments through Craigslist. The biggest thing to look out for are ads saying an apartment is in one neighborhood when really it's somewhere completely different...
Can't I just live in my mini van? >.
Found my first Manhattan apartment at an incredible deal - a rent-stabilized unit, a full service building in Murray Hill, that was renovated with the best materials - marble, granite, everything brand new (to try to jack up rent as high as the law allows) and still $1,000 below market. The management company didn't want to rent it to me and asked for a high income (had it just high enough) and then demanded guarantors (gave them that too) .. even the agent didn't think I'll get it. Lived there for as long as I could before I got married and bought my own place.
So basically your'e going to give up all your money just so you can say you live in a certain zip code. No thanks
+loyal4 the way Someone that understands. Why would you want to give up all your money so that you can live in a big house in the middle of no where? Different strokes for different folks.
+loyal4 the way
Living in a big city doesn't mean your life will automatically become exciting. Big cities can be awfully stressful with people that don't behave like you would expect, noise and crime.
+Flag "first", "sandstorm" and "301 club" comments as spam for a surprise Living in the suburbs might not be as great as you expect. Suburbs are awfully stressful with loneliness, depression, homeowners association, child abducters, psychotic homicidal housewives and stressful daily commutes.
Living in the country might not be as great as you expect. The country is awfully stressful with the lack of amenities such as sanitary water, regulations to prevent companies from dumping toxic waste in your backyard, depression from loneliness and the ever present threat of your local meth head/crackhead/ serial killer.
See the city isn't the only one with problems.
Let people live their lives and maybe stop being bitter
Not everybody loves the city. Not everybody loves the suburbs. Not everybody loves the country. There is no 'best' for every single person because we're all different. For some people, it''s worth spending that kind of money to live in the city. For others, it's not.
Do not live in New York City. It's a nice place to visit, but not to live. It's very expensive and the apartment space is VERY small. Just move to Houston Texas. Houston has a bunch of shopping malls and the apartments are spacious. It is definitely NOT in the middle of nowhere. And you get apartments for a really good price :)
Landlords require potential tenants to make 40 times the rent in employment? That's crazy. I live in L.A. and the Landlords here require a tenant to make 3 times the rent. You get space in the apartments in L.A. for what you're paying. It's crazy how N.Y. studio apartments will average around $2,000 a month for 260sq. ft.
Good information, I am looking for an apartment right now, but in Brooklyn NY.
+Joshua Jean-Francois BK in the house - we live in Park Slope/Gowanus and love it!
that's crazy 2000 a month a one bedroom apartment here I live only costs 400 a month
New York is hella expensive, cause everybody wants to live there
sounds pretty bad im happy i dont live there abd theres no trees or farms no wildlife.
+Mia Kuc No, everybody doesn't want to live there. I love N.Y. and New Yorkers but you couldn't pay me to live there.
***** I know I don't see the point of living in a big city
***** I would love to visit but not live you know what i mean
Thanks! I asked someone to send photos and he didn't have any. But said he shows it everyday at 7pm. I said never mind.
I love the music you play during your videos.
Great vid! lord knows us new yorkers eat stress for breakfast lol. Thanks for the vid
Thanks for the informative video! I am about to start my apartment hunt in the city so im glad i found these tips .
I LOVE it!! I've just been super curious about what living in NYC would be like. Thanks for sharing.
i love the village also i grow up on Jane st my mother and farther use to own a brownstone there i would love to live again but like you said you pay for the zip code not the space unless you have the money to get what you want
Thank you so much for making this video. It was extremely helpful : )
EASY! You 1st hunt through the NYC obituaries and pray that there were no living relatives wanting to grab the digs! I'm a native born New Yorker from Gravesend, Brooklyn. Morbid, but that's how you do it!
Electric cars are quickly growing in popularity. Where do you plug in? I haven't seen any public charging stations on the streets where you can park. Where are they located?
Very helpful! Thanks for all the tips! I'm moving to nyc next month! so excited!
cool video & thank you for the advice
Great tips or suggestions on moving to the city. I have family both in the city and a few out in Yorktown heights as well. But again thanks for sharing your view and thoughts on the journey, very helpful indeed.
Thanks for this.Depressing to see how expensive nyc is.Nice music and street scenes on this video though.
New York City is NOT one of a kind. That's hype. There are tons of other places that have a deeper and more expanded quality of life. They are cleaner, quieter, cheaper and much more enjoyable.
different stroke for different folks
Shizen Wong You bet!
+Ray Rothermel yea but I disagree about not being one of a kind though nyc is beautiful hella expensive but that's just nyc new york state is much cheaper but as I said earlier to each their own but your on a video about nyc there's something about it that amuses you
Shizen Wong The "world's 25 greatest places to live" just came out and NYC wasn't on it! What amused me is that I was brought up in the east and I detest row houses. They're ugly, super expensive, inconvenient, cramped, have little or no outdoor space etc. One may as well be a rat.
+Ray Rothermel mmmh yea I disagree with that also everyone has different views I guess I just thought it was funny that you were on a new york video and don't like it
Thought the song was Shades Of Cool by Lana Del Rey at first
love Lana
My baby lives in shades off cool
Fucking ridiculous. Renting an apartment in NYC is harder than mortgaging a house anywhere else.
***** I'm not hating. I've been to NYC several times and absolutely love it. Yes, I'd like to live there, but landlords there these days only want to lease to upper class tenants. Requiring someone to have a monthly income 40x greater than their monthly rent is absurd. I live in Las Vegas, and my monthly income is 4x my monthly rent and I live comfortably.
40x rent is obviously yearly, not monthly.
here is a new reality -- realtors have the apartment inventory for every block computerized. so now rent prices operate like the airlines.
say you see an apartment at 10AM and the rent is $3000/month. you think about for an hour and call the agent and say you'll take it (= $6,000 payment upfront to landlord FYI). but at 10.15AM an apartment across the street in a different building got rented -- so the inventory has decreased on that block = now they can raise the price of your apartment to $3500/mth.
tiny place+high price just because of its location=waste of time and money. take a detached house, row house etc somewhere more middle of no where. You can always drive and visit in places like NYC and still live big and even more cheaper way.
Superb video
GUYS! TRY BACKPAGE!!! THEY HAVE GREAT NYC APARTMENT LISTINGS!!!
Nice
The housing market is set to crash in London. At this rate I'd have to shit out £2000 a month to be able to live in a 2 bed apartment in Ealing. I cannot imagine living a studio in NYC for the same amount.
wow , thi video was a great help . You explained so much in 6 min . Appreciated . Thank you !
Sad
great video. very helpfull. thanks a lot
Don’t move to New Yorker... stay where you are...;)
looking for a four bedrooms in bklyn sec 8,working
Thanks for the thoughts you have provided here.
That's for this! Very helpful!
Many people focus just on Manhattan, but certain areas in Brooklyn and Queens are almost as convenient and cheaper - Long Island City, Queens is 15 minute subway ride from Midtown and you can get a lot cheaper rent. Forte Greene Brooklyn same thing. Even considering Hoboken and Jersey City could be an option.
markv1 b/
then apartment is so much cute to live and
i wish i could live in NYC, but its too expensive, love from INDIA
haha
Wow this was useful!
Thanks for this! I've read that a lot of places in NYC have rodent and cockroach infestation problems. Have you ever had to deal with that?
Sadly, I did. I mentioned it on my Williamsburg video. But don't let it bother you, any good exterminator can help.
If u were seen as picky or fussy by asking too many questions , then agent soon lost interest in u and get someone else as a tenant , not you. Thats becos usually agent have like list of people to show around and choose from anyway, so rentals are so high demand and u better be quick.
+HS SH Screw the agents. Don't play their game. They only get away with it because most people are suckers.
Ray Rothermel then what do you do not to play their game?
HS SH Obviously, go it alone, go AROUND them. Use other sources. And don't pay the real estate agents a bonus when they don't even get involved. That's a scam!
People need to be debriefed about New York City before coming. NYC is a hell. It is so hard to get things done, and get problems that arise, completed and squared away . It is very expensive. It is unfriendly. There is division among racial and ethnic groups like you wouldn't believe. It is a place you aspire AWAY from.If you MUST, visit 2 or 3 days, then leave.
A Viwer but but i thought nyc was a utopia
A Viwer
Depends really. If you dont give a shit its a good place to live. Racisim is everywhere. I frankly dont care about racisim. If you are in great shape people will love you. Even racists.
So get out
A Viwer lived in nyc all my life.Love my city.
That’s not true… there are good and bad people where ever you go …
