Hey techno dad, Should I just worry about using the correct picture mode on my calibrated tv or match the tv picture with the 4K player picture setting? I assume it is mainly dependent on how good a picture your tv can give? Would you say leave the player on standard? Of all the picture settings I notice there seems to be a loss of shadow detail in movie mode. Is this maybe suppose to be this way? Like maybe movie mode is making those specific areas darker because they are suppose to look that way? Standard and user setting(default settings) are pretty close but bring back that detail. However the image is brighter and not as pleasent as the slightly dimmer movie mode. I fooled around a bit in user settings but could not find one I liked. Going on past experience I understand why Film mode is dimmer, I just want to make sure I am getting the best possible way of viewing. I am using the player with a Samsung smart tv. I have heard this tv is not top of the line so.
Thanks for the video, it helped me decide to buy one to go with my OLED LG TV. Would you know the brand and model of the optical drive that is inside the player?
Get the ubkm9 its the same player as ubk90 and cheaper. You wont be dissappointed with disk loading time. Plus the fact ot detects if its 3d, hdr10 or dolby vision.
Mark Louie Adame thank you your reply. My UKB90 has been modified to play all Blu-ray regions. So whichever player I wanted to consider apart from its ability to support BDXL, it would also need to be able to switch regions.
Tim, I would always recommend the Oppo over these budget players. I would save up for that if you can. It'll do everything this player does but WAY better!
The UP970 was garbage as I got mine on sale for $200 and it lasted 4 months and it sounded like a jet taking off when you put a disk into it. I am not sure I will ever buy another LG player as LG makes good products but I find a weakness in many companies it to make a reliable disk player .
That's definitely true James. The first batch of UP970s do have that issue. I bought one used on ebay for $90 just for testing purposes and it's fine. This new UBK90 doesn't seem to have that issue. It seems like this is a UP970 without the bugs. Now I just have to wait and see what happens in the coming months.
It would probably still be under warranty but I read comments on audio sites where people sent their in only to have the same issue come back a month later when they got it back. I was saving for the OPPO 4K player but the company decided not to go on making any more Blu-ray players as I guess their sales were not what they need to continue on but out of all the players I had from Pioneer Elite to Panasonic my OPPO Blu-ray player had the best picture and sound out of all of them. But people don't want to spend $500 on a quality player as it's sad as more and more people prefer digital downloads... it sucks to be a audiophile :)
It definitely does suck, LOL! I am about to pick up the Cambridge Audio CXUHD which is a clone of the Oppo UDP-203, which comes in at $700. I think it's really funny though, I've always recommend the Oppo 203 on UA-cam and on FaceBook groups and everyone said the Oppo was too expensive at $550. BUT, then they ended up buying one when Oppo announced the closing, and guess what? They all said the Oppo was leaps and bounds better than the player they currently had (LG, Sony, Samsung) in both picture and sound.
Thanks for the tip I did not know there was a Clone as do you think some other company will pick up where Oppo left off. I was considering just going with the OPPO if there are any left in stock when I am ready to buy but will have to look into the Cambridge unit :)
Hi! Meaning only 2018 player that can support all 3 at the moment. The Oppo supports HDR10 and DV. It does not support HLG and it doesn't need to as it doesn't have streaming apps.
If you have a lg 4k player from 2017 you'll want to buy the ubk90, the picture is sharper the colors are brighter, almost no blooming(my 2017 model was horrible)and the ubk90 has a hdmi audio out for DTS X and Dolby Atmos so you don't have to pass through to a receiver and loss video quality
Hi from Spain!!! Techno Dad, i would like do one question because i don´t know what is the better option for me. I bought a LG C7 Oled one week ago, and i would like to buy one Dolby Vision $K disc player. What is better? UBP-X700 from Sony or UBK90 from LG? I'm looking at the lg blueray because I'm just having a hard time justifying paying the price for an "oppo" blue ray player!...lol!!
Recommend it over the LG UP970? I know you said it's last years model, but was able to get that today for $129.99 plus tax. It won't get a ton of usage, but do want to be able to watch DV 4K blu-ray's when I want.
Did you ever find a file with Dolby atmos? I have a ton of 4K remuxes some with Dolby atmos. Let me know if you need one. They’re rather large files though. I think the smallest one I have is 42gbs.
I have a UBK90 and can confirm that it will not play Dolby Atmos audio tracks embedded in MKV files. It will, however, play MKV's with DTS HD-MA and Dolby TrueHD audio tracks so you can let your AVR's DSU or DTS Neural:X upmixers (if it has them) expand the sound. They are both very good. I have an Oppo-203 also and it won't play MKV Atmos tracks either but it will send them out as MLP audio. The UBK90 also won't recognize chapter stops in MKV files (the Oppo will) but neither do the Sony 4K players. It also sends all Netflix video out in Dolby Vision which is unfortunate since it makes SDR content look pretty bad. Still, the UBK90, as disc spinner only, is a solid back-up to my Oppo and it puts out excellent Dolby Vision and HDR images. It also can play a wide variety of files with different video and audio encoding, a big plus in my book
@@phillipstewart8372 Unfortunately not, look at Netflix supported devices on their site for Atmos playback, they are very limited, I don't know why Netflix doesn't get their act together in this respect, even the Roku Ultra Netflix app doesn't do Atmos even though the device is Atmos capable.

As long as your receiver or soundbar supports DTS:X and Dolby Atmos, you're good to go! A Blu-ray player really only needs Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio bitstream support to decode the extra layers Dolby Atmos and DTS:X on a AV receiver.
Tech Dad? I have an LG UP970 and a SecuroMax 4K hdmi you recommended. I've been having some issues with the some movies, where they seem to freeze and skip to another chapter. It's driving me nuts. Hi Luis! It probably an issue with the player. I re-bought a used UP970 a few months ago for around $90 on eBay and it's been doing fine with the few discs I've tried. Compatibility and freezing are issues with the 4K players in this price point.
Hey Channa do you produce any of your mixes in atmos ? I would really like to get music that takes advantage of atmos and any places I could find atmos music tracks. I'm using Xbox one S and UA-cam doesn't seem to let my receiver decode atmos for some reason. I have the Onkyo tx- nr676.
Mrtscrp30 That's because UA-cam only ever support LPCM 2.0, you'll have to use the Dolby Surround upmixer on your receiver to enjoy UA-cam in near-Atmos quality sound.
Hi! Sorry for the delay. Unfortunately, I only mix music in stereo. I'd have to create a 7.2.4 setup in my music studio and that's just not a possibility. Funny you ask because Dolby just released a sponsored video where they have Deadmau5 and other electronic music producers trying out mixing in Atmos and they were just stunned! There are a few music demos on the 2016 Dolby Atmos Demo Disc.
Techno Dad could you imagine the dimension your sound could achieve as a producer that would elevate your brand. You already have great sound and smooth mixes.

Hi Tommy, I think it could be better than the TCL, but the P-Quantum is only 65" and costs $1,300. So you have to do some homework if you want to stream Netflix with Atmos. As for Vudu, I had read that the Roku Ultra can do atmos but cannot confirm this since it's not available here (we're not worthy lol).
I like what I see so far. Simple and nothing overwhelming. Looking forward to your review later on. I'd like to know your thoughts about how the playback (video quality) compares to the Oppo 203.
Hey, does anyone here know how to unlock UBK80 blu ray player for all regions?
Not sure, but I do see a lot of UBK90s on Amazon that are region free.
Does it have wi-fi or just the straight Ethernet cable?
Pete Bowers at 2:08 it shows the wifi symbol on the box, so ya.
Great work man!
Hi techno! BB is having a sale on the LG UBK90 which includes the ubk90, 3 4k movies and the free harmony 665 remote for $199. should I buy it?
That’s a pretty sweet deal. I think it should be a fine player. Mine had some lip sync issues but not sure you’ll experience that.
@@TechnoDad do you think that is better than an xbox?
Thanks for the video, it helped me decide to buy one to go with my OLED LG TV. Would you know the brand and model of the optical drive that is inside the player?
Sorry, I don’t know.
Techno Dad thank you for replying.
Does it do atmos also
Yes
Do you have to manually set to Dolby Vision on this player for movies that have it like the Sony? Thanks
Nope...
So let me ask you this: should I get something like this?, Double D right out of the box, or should I still try to get my hands on an Oppo 203?
Tim, I would always recommend the Oppo over these budget players. I would save up for that if you can. It'll do everything this player does but WAY better!
Timothy Mathetes .ive got the oppo 203 it’s the best 4 k player out there.nothing compares to it.😮
Oppo 203 still the best out there.😎
Techno Dad thanks for the response.
Anytime!
Hi I am new to this 4k thing. I have a samsung ue65mu7000 TV. I am looking for a 4k player, does my TV support Dolby vision?
Hi! No Dolby Vision on any Samsung TV. Samsung is standing behind HDR10+ and not supporting DV.
Techno Dad Ah ok, thanks for the swift reply. What player would you recommend? Was thinking of getting the new Panasonic player, the 820?
I have the Samsung 4k 6290FXZA. I'm looking for a 4k player as well. What do you recommend?
Hey dude why is don't release in europe!?
Only player in 2018 that can support DV and HDR? or do you mean all 3?
Can the Oppo 203 support all 3 ?
Hi! Meaning only 2018 player that can support all 3 at the moment. The Oppo supports HDR10 and DV. It does not support HLG and it doesn't need to as it doesn't have streaming apps.
Channa, does the UBK90 allow for source direct?
Where display player? On tv screen ?
I'm sorry, not sure what you are asking. What's up?
Does the player have a display on the panel?
If you have a lg 4k player from 2017 you'll want to buy the ubk90, the picture is sharper the colors are brighter, almost no blooming(my 2017 model was horrible)and the ubk90 has a hdmi audio out for DTS X and Dolby Atmos so you don't have to pass through to a receiver and loss video quality
how aboit the 80
Bestbuy has it on sale for $229 and it still comes with the free Harmony 665
Dark Moon No problem. Glad I could help. My local Bestbuy didn't have the remote so I had to order it online and return the first player.
price is up $249
Price how much iam India
Hi from Spain!!! Techno Dad, i would like do one question because i don´t know what is the better option for me. I bought a LG C7 Oled one week ago, and i would like to buy one Dolby Vision $K disc player. What is better? UBP-X700 from Sony or UBK90 from LG? I tested both and with Sony i have to choose DV option manually, buy LG don´t have 60 hz option for Billy Linn $K disc...
Hi Pablo! Well, if the 60Hz is important to you, then you should go with the Sony, but you'll always have to switch DV on and off. It's up to you.
Regardless of that, which player do you like the most?
Also, what about dvd & bluray playing on these 4k players? What is better?
out of those two, I would go with the LG
Lot of thank´s, Techno Dad!!!
Hey techno dad what u think of the Samsung 8500 budget uhd blueray player .. thanks
Hi! I haven't had experience with it, but it should do fine especially if you have Samsung TV.
@@TechnoDad I also bought the samsung qled q65 have you heard and what are your thoughts on that television as a 4k display thanks man
So just to be clear techno dad, will it play dolby atmos?
Hi! No 4k player plays Dolby Atmos, they just bitstream the audio to the AVR which decodes the signal.
@@TechnoDad right, yeah that's what I meant!...lol!!....I should have worded my question better!...thanks! I just wanted to make sure I could actually listen to "atmos" when playing a movie that had "atmos" sound track thru this lg blue ray player thru my denon avr that has "atmos" decoding that's connected to my 7.2.2 speaker arrangement that I currently have until I pony up the money for two more height "atmos" speakers! I'm looking at the lg blueray because I'm just having a hard time justifying paying the price for an "oppo" blue ray player!...lol!!
May have to check one of those out since the remote is a nice bonus.
hi have dolby atmos pls?
The free remote at BB is still going fyi
Wow, that's crazy!
Recommend it over the LG UP970? I know you said it's last years model, but was able to get that today for $129.99 plus tax. It won't get a ton of usage, but do want to be able to watch DV 4K blu-ray's when I want.
Yes. The UPK90 is an upgrade. Biggest difference is that it's way less noisy.
Can you review the Cerwin Vega XLS-215 Dual 3 way
Hellllll yeah
Another question, TechnoDad; play this ubk90 ycbcr 4:4:4 sign?
Hi! I don't know, I'll have to check
But should I buy it for my TCL or vizio to watch 4k content
Ok it wont play atmos on a mkv file but, will it play atmos from a normal 4k blue ray movie disk?
Mine has no problems playing Atmos or DTS-X disks be it 4k-UHD or 1080p blue ray disks.
Does the Netflix app play Atmos thur receiver?
@@phillipstewart8372 Unfortunately not, look at Netflix supported devices on their site for Atmos playback, they are very limited, I don't know why Netflix doesn't get their act together in this respect, even the Roku Ultra Netflix app doesn't do Atmos even though the device is Atmos capable.
Thanks for the great videos! I didn't see it on your channel, was there a full review for this unit? Curious if it has similar problems to the Sony x 700
Hi! I have given that to Youthman to check out so I don’t have it in house to make a final review. I’ll tell you this though, I did get some audio/video sync issues with the lg UBK90. Mostly on Dolby Vision discs
@@TechnoDad thank you sir! I'm finally getting back into the physical media game. Picked up a Samsung k8500 on Ebay for $90. Has hdr but no Dolby vision. You can pick up the lg for one $130 right now. I already spent the money on the Samsung so I'll probably hold out for the cambridge audio at this point...
does it support DTS X audio?
As long as your receiver or soundbar supports DTS:X and Dolby Atmos, you're good to go! A Blu-ray player really only needs Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio bitstream support to decode the extra layers Dolby Atmos and DTS:X on a AV receiver.
ColonielLizardT4 thank you! I have a AV Receiver that supports DTS X i will try and see if i can buy this Blu Ray Player. Thanks again!
Is this player compatible with the Tcl 6 series for DV. Thinking going with this over my Xbox one s which recently got updated for the tcl
Hi! Yes it is compatible with the TCL 6 series
Ok cool. Thx
Wow so cool I need this for my 4k tv Sony
Nice review bro!
Thanks!
Main question is whether it rattles, hums and buzzes like my UP970 before I swapped it for an Oppo!
Tech Dad? I have an LG UP970 and a SecuroMax 4K hdmi you recommended. I've been having some issues with the some movies, where they seem to freeze and skip to another chapter. It's driving me nuts. I've done the necessary updates and the discs are clean and scratch free. I've even taken a disc back for an exchange but still have same issue. Can you help?
ColonielLizardT4 th for that info I appreciate your response I will adjust my settings thanks again.
You already have great sound and smooth mixes.
hey mate im thinking of buying the lg ubk90 for my lg b7 oled what do you think of this 4k player thanks its that or the sony ubp 800
Tim Kite Have a look at the Sony UBP 700. It's cheaper than the 800 and it will have Dolby Vision through an update this summer.
Short and sweet! but hey techno dad what about the rest of us that don't hv an LG tv or hdr10 would this player still make enough of a difference. Im using my xbox one s for blueray 4k play back btw.
Hi techno Daddy-o just wanted 2 ask u about the new vizio p quantum series 4k coming out this summer. Do u think it will b better than the tcl r6 as far as picture & color?? Please let me know if u can cheers😎😀
Hi Tommy, I think it could be better than the TCL, but the P-Quantum is only 65" and costs $1,300. So it's $300 more, and if you're going that much, you might want to get a Sony...maybe...I think you might be thinking of the Vizio P-series without the Quantum, the P55-F1, which is around $800 for the 55"
Thanks Tech Dad. The issue was with the new Deadpool 4K Steelbook.
Hi TD. My Yamaha 583 do Thursday Atmos in the bedroom.
Nice!
Love your videos, man.
If anyone is still looking for this one, it's now $149-ish at bestbuy and on ebay... just picked one up myself
Looks like that would be the one to buy for that price point
Did you try connecting the player to a receiver and then out to a projector? I only got audio, no video. The NVIDIA shield tv does hdr and atmos via the same setup and cables.
I did not as I do not have a projector.
LG UBK80 is not exactly the same. It lacks a dedicated HDMI audio out port.
Copy that. Thank you for the correction!
Does anyone has this player with the 2017 Samsung UE49MU7000 (in the US it's MU8000)?
Eiii man when is release this blu-ray!?
Techno Dad do 1080p blu ray discs look sharper played in a 4K blu ray player. I'm buying a lg 4k player next week Region free
Hi Jamie, it depends on how good the upscalling of your TV is, I have a Visio M60-C3 (2015 model, no HDR) and my 1080P blueray disks look amazing. :)
I found your video very helpful thank you.
Its now 2020 and this is still the latest LG 4K player, okay i am now a little concerned.
I was hoping for Amazon Prime along with Netflix.
Yeah, no company has released one in 2020.
@@TechnoDad what about 2021?
