    Maybe something that is good to mention here: The Panasonic UB820 and UB9000 have an auto detection function for HDR10/HDR10+/Dolby Vision, but if a disc contains both HDR10+ and Dolby Vision (Which I, at first, wasn't even aware of that it existed), both players default to HDR10+ and you have to disable HDR10+ detection in the player's menu if you want to watch the content in Dolby Vision. ;)

    • @ELcinegatto87

      Oppo 205 also defaults to HDR10+ on the discs with both fwiw. The whole 12bit marketing nonsense of DV is utterly pointless with mostly 8bit frc+ and 10bit panels. Plus it's delivered to consumers in a standard 10bit asset. Unlike theatrical Dolby Cinema 12bit 4k laser projection where it actually matters. Regardless, both DV and HDR10+ look great. I will say though that HDR10+ does have better shadow detail because it has a superior 10 point beizer curve tonemapper versus Dolby's 3 point interpolation. Hence the slight black crush on some DV content. So I personally don't fuss over one or the other. Just whatever the disc or streaming platform sends. Experience, someone that owns 1000s of discs import/domestic, Panasonic OLEDs, and owner/experience with all the flagship spinners made.

    I chose the Sony UBP-X800M2 because I also like having DVD-AUDIO and SACD support. I really think that features such as auto detection of Dolby Vision and native output video resolution can easilly be added for free via firmware update. I really wish Sony would just give us such a release as a free download to install on the player.

    It was interesting when you mentioned the "auto-detect" mode for Dolby Vision. I have the Sony x700 and have never noticed any issues going back & forth between DV discs and non-DV discs. My player has been set to auto since getting it in 2019. Maybe I am just lucky there. LOL. I don't like the idea of switching settings all the time. So something to think about. That is reason why I want to get a separate unit for playing all-region blurays. I don't want to be switching the regions settings.

      @iansteventon4221 7 місяців тому

      I can't see how you will see any difference, it's sending a digital codec to the display. Only difference should be in upscale ( that panasonic is currently the best ) or in some cases hdr optimiser. ( again panasonic is currently top) some players have better audio , with analogue options.

    • @ELcinegatto87
      @ELcinegatto87 4 місяці тому

      @@iansteventon4221The HDR optimizer is irrelevant for Panasonic OLED owners with the same chipset in the TV. Believe it or not the best player for HDR impact and the highest quality drive mechanism was the Pioneer LX800. The new Panasonic DMR-ZR1 in Japan is better than the 9000, it may finally dethrone the LX800 in raw PQ. Panasonic finally added 25/50p output matching for BD PAL format content on the ZR1, the lack of which on the 9000 disqualified it as a reference player in my book due to erroneous PAL->NTSC framerate conversion. The 9000 is also a terrible file player unlike the Oppos, Pioneers and Magnetars of the world. The Magnetar has a very cheap drive for the price, but no worse than Raveons. Magnetars are better than Raveon just the Oppo style firmware alone makes it worth having over the Raveon.

      @michaelbeckerman7532 7 місяців тому +5

      I own the X700M, the X800M2 and the X1100ES from Sony. With all of them (and I use them all the time with my collection of over 50 4K movies) I have never once had any of them freeze or skip on any disc I have ever put into them. Do note here that it was determined that several disc stamping facilities out of Asia over the past few years were known to be putting incorrectly stamped/pressed defective discs out into the marketplace. Some of the Sony players were freezing at the layer boundary transition on many of those flawed discs. The freezing problem with these players was much more likely due to issues relating to those flawed discs rather than anything with the players themselves. As always though, be sure and keep your players up to date with the latest firmware updates. Sony is one of the very best companies out there when it comes to issuing updates for their players to keep them as up to date, issue-free and current as possible.

    I have been using the Sony X700 for a while now and aside from supporting 4K HDR and Dolby Vision/Atmos, and DTS:X, it can also play back SACD and DVD-A. I do have a couple of SACDs and a DVD-A discs so it makes me happy that I can play these back without having to buy extra gear specifically for those formats. I may be mistaken but I believe the X700 can also playback 3D movies. I had a look at my X700's settings and found some settings for 3D output. I don't watch 3D movies and my TV does not support 3D so this feature is not important to me at all. The manual switching on and off of Dolby Vision is only a minor inconvenience though. The other downside I can say is that I have experienced some skipping and freezing issues with the X700 while other times, the whole thing just ran smoothly. I am not sure though if it's the device or the disc that's defective.

    LG UBK90 is a good competitor to the Sony X700. Super basic interface but quick load times, auto detect Dolby Vision, 3D support, Dual HDMI out for those with older receiver /processor that don't support Dolby Vision pass thru. Reavon owner here, YES IT DOES DO DOLBY VISION AUTO DETECT! Where did you get the idea it doesn't? The better option is the X110 as it has both DVD-Audio and SACD support the Panansonic 9000 doesn't. I haven't used a Magnetar, but from what I have read and seen it is a better player than the Reavon X200 but the X200 at it's price does offer analog 7.1 out for even older receiver/processors or multi channel SACD.

Many have received glitched players new right out of the box. My first 820 bought new was a lemon and had to be replaced. If you’re lucky enough to get one that works, leave it alone and enjoy it.

  • @devan_danger

    Fomo says the remote is great for the 820 but all the reviews I've seen that mention it say its poorly designed and i have to agree. The navigation buttons are smaller than the Netflix button-- that always gets hit instead, abd and theyre at ghe very bottom of the remote. Also no subtitle button.
    Overall tho the Panasonic does seem like a better player than the Sony 700 but it still has issues the Sony is better for. Like it auto upscales dvd and BD to the 4k output accepted by the tv. Whereas the Sony allows you to turn off upscaling. It will still upscale DVD to 1080p tho.

    Hi! I have the UBP-X700/M, great device,*it does support 3D Bluray playback* (5:55 ), Dolby Vision works great, even if you have to manually turn it on every time you put in a DV 4k disc, sadly it doesn’t change automatically. If you leave DV On the device sends all content, even SDR, in a forced DV which might not be a problem for many, but it does look forced.

    DV is too dim vs HDR 10, DV locks all the picture trying while HDR 10 let you change brightness, in my opinion ignore DV hype.

      In my experience, the XBox series X is very loud when playing 4k discs. I don't know if it's the dvd mechanism itself or the fan, but either way, unless you plan on listening to the movie at very high volume, the loudness of the machine makes watching 4k discs on xbox a no-go for me.

    The Panasonic players also support 4k 'SDR' (I'm not talking about 4k HDR) playback in 10 bit, such as the Kino Lorber 'Dollars trilogy. The other players output 4K SDR in 8 bit...thereby reducing the quality down instead of playing it in true 10 bit. Also, the Panasonic players perform test pattern playback better when using the spears and munsil test discs. There are less jaggies and noise, practically none. In real world content on TV screens when pixel peeping, its probably not noticeable. But, for the perfectionists out there, the Panasonic has the best video processing.

    I have the Sony X800 & X800M2, Panasonic UB820, and Sony PlayStation 5. The Sony XM800 and PlayStation have the cleanest picture. The XM800 has a cleaner picture than the M800M2. The Panasonic UB820 has a slightly warmer picture tone than all of the Sonys and the colors are more saturated. The Panasonic UB820 can also provide custom tone mapping to brighten the APL on 4K HDR (non Dolby Vision) discs. The Sony X800 series is made of metal. The Panasonic UB820 is plastic. My go to player is the Sony X800 (original) as it has the cleanest picture. The Sonys, except the PlayStation 5, play SACDs if that is important to you. The PlayStation does not play any kind of music disc. The Panasonic has a feature where you can simulate vacuum tube sound for CDs if that is your thing.
