Best review for the m2 I have seen so far! Thank you
Thank you so much for that great review. Bought the Sony yesterday and I don't regret it. Listening to my Atmos-Blueray with Hans Zimmer performing his film music live on stage was unbelievable. My living room turned into a concert hall. If you don't believe me, ask my wife, who's not speaking to me anymore! :-) Only thing is: I had True HD 7.1 audio when I first tried the built-in amazon streaming app. Then I might have made some changes and now I only get 5.1. Same goes for netflix - only 5.1, no DTS etc. What the heck did I do wrong? :-) Using my xbox and - as I said - discs on the sony - I get the full experience with true hd and atmos...
Great video. Very informative. Only suggestion is to turn off or lower the background music and slow down in the menus a bit. I’m very familiar with how to use but may make it confusing for newbies :)
Great review. I almost typed that you said the UB820 was the Player to get. Then heard you mention the link for the review. You Have To Watch And Listen to the WHOLE REVIEW. Anyway I think I will keep saving my spare change for the Panasonic.
When you ran through the setting you said, "A lot of these settings are self explanatory so I would go through all of them." I wish you had gone through all of them. Your knowledge is not everyone's and certainly not mine. Informative. Thank you. Probably will get this player but now the Panasonic you mentioned is also on my list. Thanks.
Which one did you get? I have read a lot of negative reviews about the Panasonic, I also believe it does not have WiFi?
it's also quite clear you may need a bit more assistance than the average person. A persons level of knowledge is of no importance when something is "self explanatory". It explains itself! "Parental control" hmm what does that mean? it controls my parents? please help, i dont understand these things!!! too technical!!
@@Outland9000 I have both the Panasonic 820 and the Sony x800 M2. I picked up the 820 specifically because it had a setting for OLED TVs. It's a great player. I picked up the Sony to replace the Panasonic 400 because it didn't have Dolby Vision, and I was able to score it for $150 (Can). I haven't had the Sony long enough to really evaluated fairly but other than having to switch out the Dolby Vision feature manually, it's very very similar to previous-generation Sony players...which I liked. Of the two I'd probably give the edge to the Panasonic, although the remote is somewhat bulky some of the buttons are a little misplaced. Also it should be noted that the Sony doesn't come with very many apps. I use my tv for those mostly anyway, but here in Canada it only had netflix and youtube. Oh and the chipset in the Panasonic is fantastic.
@@Baron_Blue_Max what’s the setting for OLEDs?
@@ceezare3039 limits peak brightness for hdr to 1000 nits if memory serves. Oh and the Sony can play more file types than the Panasonic
Thank you for your great content.... always look forward to your great reviews and informative updates...😀
Great review. I'll continue using my X800 with my 49X900F. Some day I'll upgrade to the Panasonic one but I've been very happy with the X800. Been watching Batman 1989, Batman Returns, and Toy Story on 4K, loving the start of June so far!!!!
The Panasonic ub420 is alot better,... when I had the x800 it had issues freezing and audio cutting out when skipping scenes
when reviewing a UHD player or blu-ray player player, you should also review the sound from standard CDs. And players who support hi-res sound are essential today especially if you buy high-resolution music. it should also support 24-bit streaming from, for example, Amazon music HD and Tidal
I think it’s the minor inconveniences like manual switching for DV that discourage people away from high quality AV/physical media. Something as simple as auto detecting DV would have an impact on people purchasing this or getting into 4K Blu rays.
What's DV?

Hey thanks for the top tip on upscaling, I have the first model X800 and now changed the upscaling from auto 1 which only upscales to 1080p to the Auto 2 and it now up scales everything to 4K on my Sony Oled Af9 4K TV. I'm sure there are a lot of people like me who didnt know that and only watching upscaling to 1080p via Auto 1,Thanks again
In deed if you have a recent and good TV I would stay with Auto1 or even no upscaling and let the TVs upskaler do the work, which may be better by now.
Bought it yesterday; everything -- 4K Sony TV and Receiver -- gets hooked up tomorrow.
How are you liking it?
Okay,I need that Joker poster. 😄😄😄 Othervise, cool review!
I got the player! Thank you
Cheers Shane great review. Thanks for the video.
Thanks for a great and informative review.
They need to add a firmware update for auto Dolby vision detect.
Has this been done yet? Considering this player
@@NL-fe4leno it hasn't for the X800 & X700 models.
Looks like it will never happen. I REALLY want to be a fly on the wall as to why that isn't possible - there must be a good reason as im sure they would've done it if they could, it's so obvious. Basically just handing sales directly to Panasonic... I would've probably bought the X800M2 if this issue wasn't there, but got the UB820 instead.
@@NL-fe4le I think it was fixed.
@@SBBUK Lack of interest in 4K Ultra HD Blu ray disc
I have a Sony 4k Ultra HD Blu-ray player that matches my 70 inch 4k Ultra HD TV and that's just fine, I totally Love it 👍👍👍👍👍
@spare change i didnt quite understand the streaming app audio streaming bit..does the player allow / detect atmos through netflix and prime? Thanks in advance
Finally normal english, awesome. I stay here. Good information about audio.
Shoutouts to the Sony XB950s & their Bass Boost
Does it support EX fat and NTFS for usb external HDDs?
Roku does
I decided to go with this player after reading
the issues people seemed to have with the
X-700. Amazon has the X-800 at $198.00 right
now, just before Black Friday.
Great review. Sub deserved.
I'm going to buy this when it goes on sale instead of the Panasonic 820 because of Bluetooth connectivity! Thanks for the review!
I snatched open box one up for 229.90 on Best Buy. New it's on sale for 249.99!
I will keep my Sony X800 for now until they release a proper player X800M3 !!!
I just purchased one on Cyber Monday at Best Buy for $200. I was looking at the UBP700 but I have dvd audio discs and like listen ting to music. I really wanted the Dolby Vision capability. Thanks for the review. I will be following your settings when I hook it up.
Thank you for the review. Could you please tell me what's your firmware version? 'Cos on mine I cannot find fonts settings..
LOL!! I hope they fix the DV setting, but it's likely they won't. In all honesty, this is the player they should have released two years ago.
No need to fix it. Just come out with a new model after everyone buys this one.
Someone at Sony should look at how Oppo and Panasonic implemented DV and use that as a example of how to do it correctly.
SpareChange Why didn’t they just Come Out with a DV Update for it now I gotta Spend $300 on Another Model
@@therealshanelee That the business way of doing things.
Which would have better 4K HDR Graphics the Sony X-800M2 or the Panasonic DP-820 Blu-ray player?
I've had my Sony X800 for 4 year's and I've never had problems even though it's on top of my soundbase system plus the sound is just as good on my surround sound as well.
have you tried SACD?
Learning something new everyday👍
Very helpful video, thank you.
Do you know if they addressed why the M1 was shutting off at random? Over heating? If so, was that addressed?
Also, the one thing that customers were after in the M1, they have in the M2, but made it a huge PITA?? The LG UBK90 can't be any worse AV quality wise and makes it much easier to watch movies in Dolby Vision, js...
You should of course have DSD on if you do not want to lose quality from DSD file or a super audio CD = SACD
Needed this. Thanks
Does anyone know if this player upscales all Netflix/Prime Video movies and shows if you activate it to on the box?
Just piked up one let you know after I watch a couple of movies
Had the X800 Blu player. Despite regular firmware updates, kept stalling, freezing, and not doing anything. The second Sony blu player I owned that did that. I had at one time almost every brand that makes players. In my experience the Panasonic players I had gave me the least amount of trouble
Sometimes the players overheat since they don’t have any fans on them. I had this once the player stopped my film it froze and the it started skipping the film the remote commands did nothing I had to unplug the system. The day it did that my living room was hot it was like 90 degrees outside.
@@ryans413 Now, after having owned every brand of 4K player available, I can say, for me, LG players have the least fuss and last the longest.
@@shaunweiss3550 well the X800 has been reliable just I think they get a little too hot and it freezes up if they had a small fan or something too move air in that case I think they bee alright. I don’t think it’s a disc drive problem it’s the machines processor getting hot
@@ryans413they don't have fans on them. There's a video on UA-cam where someone takes the X800 apart.
The reason they freeze is that the Sony models especially struggle with triple layer 100gb discs. My X700 does this and it winds the hell put of me.
Due to this, I'll be ditching the X700 and upgrading the a Panasonic 820.
@Ben Pascall just brought the sony, I don't want problems with freezing, I think I'm going to exchange it for the panasonic today, dident open the sony yet, didn't want to spend 500 bucks but I don't want problems either.
My review of this model. Top marks for this effort from Sony sound quality is the best when using SACDs and Amazing picture quality too as long as you use a 4k TV of course, I am only using a cheap TCL 4k Monitor but delighted with the picture quality. I am also using 4k cables as well bought separately. But after using this since July 20 when I purchased it its been a constant going in and out of sound settings to get the sound to work. The main problem here is if you plan to just use it for blu ray, network and CDs that's fine but as soon as you put in a SACD there is no output in Super Audio so its back in to sound settings to re set it to play SACDs then after that it goes dead again no sound when trying to watch a Blu Ray/You Tube/or normal CD and if that's not a nightmare in itself you get TWO HDMI outs one for Audio/Video and one for Audio Out only which I am guessing is for SACD. I have managed to get the SACD output working in the past but I just work out when I changed in settings, why the heck can't Sony just have one HDMI out and set the sound to adjust itself for ALL outputs not have to keep going in and out of settings every time I want to change from normal sound to DSD/Super Audio CD its a complete nightmare and very frustrating and more bother than its worth I am considering selling this unit for a better brand. Very angry with Sony they have gone down the drain the last few years with their products.
How does the noise from a spinning 4k disc compare to the UBPX700? I had a UBPX700 briefly, but the noise from a 4k disc was so loud I returned it. Same with 2 LG players.
All were good with regular Blu-ray and DVD, but 4k discs were noisy.
You got to love when a reviewer runs through the functions so quickly that you have to go over each section multiple times to know what the flock he's talking about. I'm sure there's great information here. I did pick up a couple of things; but having to re-re-re-watch certain portions is worse than having to switch Dolby Vision on and off. Next.
I picked this player up yesterday for $199. I was considering the Panasonic 820 ($459) or possibly the 9000 ($999), but I just don’t watch enough movies via disc (vs. iTunes via Apple TV) to warrant the investment. This Sony player will work just fine for me on my OLED for my Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and LOTR discs.
I have same exact thoughts. Just picked up the 820 and have buyers remorse for price I paid. Want to return especially seeing I can find the Sony player on eBay under $200. Have you had an issues with the Sony since you bought it?
@@DKprojects9 I’ve had zero problems, but then again I’ve only watched a handful of movies. I’ve just been too darn busy with life to sit down and focus on a movie for a few hours. Honestly, the convenience and unbeatable price of iTunes movies (usually $4.99) is hard to beat.
Great info and thank you for sharing. The question I want to know, is there a difference in sound quality compared to the 700?
Awesome review as always Shane!
Thank you!!! 🙏
Love the poster.
Hi Shane, Batman 1989 looks Stunning in 4k
Yes it does look very nice.
That film is garbage
Great review
Just got this player Thanks for breaking down the Dolby Vision settings and how to check if the disc is HDR or Dolby Vision without looking at the package. Just a quick question what happens if I leave Dolby Vision on while watching an upscaled Blu-ray?
Enjoy my x800. Great product. Really hope 4k Blu-ray doesn't go away. Have a really good theater room setup and streaming video/audio doesn't even come close to 4k disc quality. I get it though, 90% of the consumer base is perfectly happy with the ease of streaming. Guess convenience will always beat out quality.
not soon, but i guess everything will be 8k in a few years...although, that is really 4k as 4k is actually only 2160p. 4k is only a bullshit marketing term
Dynamic Hypnotic 8K Blu ray will never happen with makes buying 8K TV pointless.
I don’t think physical media will go away until we get reasonably priced ultra high quality audio/video streaming to knock Kaleidascape out of business.
Streaming is definitely a compromise, especially the audio
Samsung stopped making 4K blu-ray players
Yeah, in good old times I just put my VHS tape in and that it! Now I must go through ca. 100 settings before I finally get my movie started... So unfear!!!
That’s because VHS only had only quality, and it looks bad.
@@FinnishArmy They could have made it look better, but they weren't gonna waste the time and money cause most people didn't even know it looked bad, how can you know what you're missing out on if you never experienced it? Now the marketplace uses sound and picture quality as a selling point. Things have gone 180, how the times change.
Can you manually set static network settings (IP address, DNS)?
Thanks for showing settings and review
Fo Sho!
Thanks for the review! It certainly helped me make up my mind and NOT go for this player. Manually switching between DV on and off feels like we're back in the DVD flipper disc area. Or LaserDisc. The player should do this automatically.

WHY DOES EVERYTHING STREAM STUFF MY TV ALREADY DOES THAT I JUST WANNA WATCH MY MOVIES
Nate - Man UHD 4K. Better than BR
I'm not so sure the TV supports 24-bit audio from Amazon and Tidal. And not all smart TVs have all popular apps
There are people who use projectors instead of TV

My Internet sucks so I just don't stream I buy 4K movies
Thanks for the nice video. What exactly does Downmix do in the sound settings? I use an avr and don't understand why stereo is the right setting...
Thanks for going through the settings and setup. I just purchased an 800M2 and connected to an A90J using HDMI 2.1 cables, and every 4K disc I have played locks up! This includes brand new discs and old ones. I even cleaned each disc just in case but no luck. It seems like a memory issue and occurs about an hour into each disc. You can stop playback and return, and it looks fine, but I have also noticed chapter selection will not work in many cases, and the "Resume" feature often is not working? I purchased this unit thinking my A90J remote would control this player, but it doesn't, so you have to use the weak non-lit Sony remote. It does have better Bluetooth sound output when connected to a Sony headset, but I can do the same thing using my A90J work. I am only using this unit to play 4K discs and do not need it for streaming. I do all streaming through the A90J. I am not sure what options are left, but I wanted a dedicated player instead of a gaming console to get better picture quality.
Change two settings to fix this:
Change cinema conversion from AUTO to VIDEO
Turn off 4k up scaling. (Your television more than likely does its own upscale)
This should fix the locking up issue.
Is it region free and does the m1 have a firmware update that gives you Dolby Vision too?
It has Dolby Vision, unfortunately you have to manually turn it on though
I'm wondering if it's region free too. I have one but don't have any Blu-rays from other regions to check.
@@VIDEOgameDROME all 4k disc's are region free
So viewing this a year later did they update the Dolby vision being detected yet? Looking to buy this.
Not yet, i just got it as christmas gift last month, still gotta switch but to me its no big deal, i keep my dolby uhds in their own section/pile. While auto switching would be nice, at this price point its not a deal breaker, price went down to 199 during the holidays. If u normally used xbx one x/s or series x as ur only 4k player like i used to, i honestly think image quality is improved in my opinion, seems “cleaner” plus obviously xbx didnt support DV for uhd, even playing apple tv app movies of my digital copies on my series x doesnt play dolby v but i just use my lg c9 for all streaming needs including apple tv. I noticed some movies are not in DV on uhd but their digital copies are its weird...like some marvel movies.
@@pboissie Hey! I got this player also as a gift, i read online that it tends to freeze mid movie some time. Did you come across this problem too?
@@DeserveHD actually havent had that issue in the last few months ive had the player, no other complaints either :) its been great. I just wonder how much better pic quality i would get from those 400 plus panasonic players, cant imagine how much more improvement id get, so happy with this one so far.
Thank you!
I might buy one when they start getting discounted. I just wish all the players did SACD and DVD-A as it just makes a one box solution. I missed the Oppo, I missed the Pioneer.. But it seems I have to have an Achilles heel no matter which option I buy.
My dad bought this. It works perfectly for the blu ray and 4k quality. Audio is really good. Im only dissapointed as we cannot add apps along Netflix and UA-cam. My dad and I use Disney+ and Dplay but that last one we can get on tv except for Chromecast. He has a LG TV which supports netflix, D+, amazon, but no Dplay. So our setup now is: using blurayplayer for netflix, the LGtv for D+ and we have to get a chromecast to get Dplay. Why isnt there just a simple universal device that can either have all the apps we want or connect any device? Because we can connect our headphones with bluetooth and even spotify, but smartphones towards the player doesnt work.... really frustrating that we now have so many devices because none of them can do all of them at once.
Disney+ only supported Android TV OS and Tizen Web OS.
Great review! Have one on its way. Will not enjoy the DV switching, but quality of picture trumps that. As you pointed out, It seems to be the best one at that price point.

The Dolby glitch is crazy? One to avoid.
The UB420 is the best
No. The new UB450 is better. It adds Dolby Vision and is priced similarly to the UB420.
This is the perfect player for me,the selling point here is that it plays SACD and DVD Audio in addition to be a decent 4k disc spinner.
Just got this DVD player cheap as refurbished. I will be using it with a 1080p projector so I guess I should leave the DV off all the time. What other settings should I use to get the best picture out of my 1080p projector and best sound out of my Sonos Beam sound bar? Also, can I use the DVD remote to change the volume on the sound bar? Thank you.
It's not "made mostly of plastic"- the shiny front fascia yes, but it's made mostly of metal hence the 8lbs weight. You could drive your car over this thing and it would probably still be ok!! Great review- thanks!
The outer is plastic hence I showed the scratching. The interior is metal.
@@therealshanelee I have the original x800 and that had a newly developed metal top plate, with deliberately offset screws - a placement said to improve sound performance. Even the heat-sink features ‘fins’ that are spatially placed for maximum effect. Are you absolutely sure the X800M2 top plate is plastic? It's looks identical to the X800...I doubt Sony would downgrade their flagship 4K player?...try attaching a magnet see if it sticks. Both weigh 3.8kg according to Sony website so it is almost certainly metal...with some type of finish which can be mistaken for plastic.
A darn shame the UBP-X800M2 still has that stupid DV HDR implementation. I'd just stick with my LG UBK90 4K player.
Yeah, the only downside I guess Sony does not care about 4K Ultra HD Blu ray until PS5 comes out the build quality is better than UBK90.
Too bad the LG isnt compatible with Sony tvs and you’re forced to have to buy a new player like me
Was wondering I have the Sony X800 but it seems like it’s scratching my discs has it been happening to you or anyone else?
did they ever update the dolby vision switching issue?
guess I stick with my UBP-X800 since I dont care about DV
The Original had too many issues that would freeze 4k movies. Dont trust Sony anymore.
I had a non digital sound bar 5.1 , HDMI 2 port didnt work with it . Manual suggested AV receiver . But after studying I used bluetooth worked great .
I turned on YCbCr 4:4:4, I think its best to let the TV do the picture processing
It is a PASS. Dolby Vision isn't automatic is a serious design flaw.
Why care its just simple switch.
Yeah but having to go in a menu every time to toggle it is seriously a pain in the ass! If it were just a button on the remote it wouldn't be such a big deal but my Philips does it automatically, it just won't play it because it's a Sony TV and Sony has different standards for the DV lol
I would buy this for $300 but I live in a third world shithole and this product will likely not be sold here and if it does, it will come at $600. If I order it from Amazon, I would pay $600 too and with the added bonus of having no warranty.
I agree. This is a third generation UHD player and Sony still hasn't made Dolby Vision/HDR10 switching automatic. For $300, no thanks. If you care more about how the unit performs as a disc spinner than a steaming device, spend an extra $200 and get a Panasonic DP-UB820. It's abilities in terms of playing all video files via USB or network aren't the greatest (my Oppo-203 is the king of that hill) but its DV/HDR disc output is superb and it auto-senses which format is being used.
@@RobertK1993 because it’s fake Dolby vision, super dark and dim compared to the Netflix/Vudu and everything else offered within the Sony TV
You have to manually turn Dolby Vision on and off? What a joke.
I might go against the grain but from a x800m2 + A9S Oled pairing, the forced DV looks (sometimes way) better on HDR10 discs than with DV OFF. Does someone have the same experience ? I thought the manual DV was an issue but at the end of the day it appears as a pro subjectively speaking. If I understand well the data model, it is not that weird to have this result.
Two questions: 1. Why not just leave Dolby Vision 'ON'? and 2. I have the M2 version and have the latest update as of 10/9/2019. However, mine does NOT have Dobly Vision as an option. Any idea why?
dolby vision is a bit silly here
Nobody wants to pay Dolby for it that is why Sony giving people a hint.
@@RobertK1993 LG is also investing in Dolby vision
Anders Ljungberg Yeah but motion processor A9 gen II and the rebranded A9 gen III are weaker than X1 Ultimate.
@@RobertK1993 X1 ultimate is not worth the crazy price hike.
Non-automatic DV detection ??? Shame on you, Sony !!!
Why people are just lazy
Robert Kelly : I don’t care anymore so I just leave it on HDR
How do you get into set up settings from the remote? Do Have to restart the unit?
does the player allows you to use an external subtitle over original disk, like OPPO does?
