Hey DCA, since you were talking blade centering, how does one work on improving centering on button locks? Both manual and out the side autos have been much less cooperative in my experience.
DCA, regarding the ZT 0006: can you take the gaurd off of the handle and reassemble the knife without any ill effects, and do you know if ZT will offer an aftermarket gaurd with a reduced size protrusion on the back side of the blade?
Question for the KniFAQ KniFACrew… I finally zeroed in on my preferred blade shape (broad spear point). Please elaborate on representative models, including the pros/cons for EDC. I have a question: Knife Center recently started charging sales tax on out of state online orders. I'm not an expert on tax laws, but I was under the impression that was not necessary. Was there a change to the tax laws? Would be nice to know the reason why, as I've noticed other dealers have started doing it as well, but not others. The tax pretty much wipes out the benefit of the Rewards system by my math. Thanks.
@@billvan5219 I dunno, I'm not even complaining yet, I'm genuinely curious. I just know that previously you did not have to collect sales tax for out of state purchases. If they're pocketing that money I'll start buying local.
@@arrowheadguys7637 yeah it's a real bummer. Some of the online ammo dealers I used to purchase from started doing the same a few months back. It ruins the discount. Sucks because the tax doesn't show up before checkout.
@@MB-jg4tr I just checked out most the major dealers by adding an item to my cart and trying to check out. Only 2 of the major dealers are doing it, plenty of others aren't. KC was my dealer of choice but since most my purchases are high end knives and I usually order more than 1 at a time the tax adds up significantly. There are dealers with rewards programs that aren't charging tax.
If you are calling 2019 as recent then yes they are collecting sales tax. I believe they had to do so with the tax act passed in 2017. I checked purchases I made from Drop, Blade HQ and KnifeCenter and all included sales tax. They do have to pay the funds to the taxing entities of where the purchaser lives. If you were not seeing a sales tax it meant your jurisdiction didn’t charge sales tax on knives until…recently. If you are not seeing at some sites either they haven’t updated their software or they are ignoring the law. If the latter it will catch up to them eventually. And no, you cannot charge sales tax and then keep it for yourself. That is a felony. Part of the reason for this is to help local merchants so if you decide to buy local that will be good for your local merchants.
DCA, what is your opinion on handle finger alignments with blades. That is to say, contoured handles smaller top to bottom that results in the bottom edge of the handle is higher than the sharpened edge of the blade or top to bottom size to match the blade? Love the banter between you and Thomas. Good teamwork. Love both new blades for the week and the FAQs.
Hey DCA, I’ve recently been dialing in my knife tastes, and I’ve found my niche. I like knives that look good enough to carry it to church, but be tough and durable enough to get anything done. My job requires me to do a lot of random things from breaking down immense amounts of boxes, to doing yard work, to going to formal events. What would be your suggestion?
Up here in Canada I’ve heard quite a few people refer to the ditch as the “cabbage” or the “rhubarb” so in a phrase “ swerve the deer but don’t put ‘er in the rhubarb” goes back to farmers in open back trucks losing cabbage or rhubarb on the side of the road and it growing in the ditch
Yeah, both "rhubarb" and "cabbage" have been used to describe unintended trips off-road for as long as I can remember. And if you lose any of your belongings/gear in said trip, it is called a "yard sale".
My new favorite camp/kitchen knife is the Ontario SPL Pack Knife in Magnacut. Granted, I have just used in the home kitchen so far, but it is a great, balanced ergonomic design that works well for food prep similar to a chef's knife and has a beefy full tang to use as a camp knife. Also, a bit higher than the $100 buckarooskis, but worth it for Magnacut! It is too heavy for me to carry at about 7.2 Oz with sheath, but absolutely fantastic camp/kitchen knife. (heft kinda works in it's favor for chopping and other harder tasks in camp)
Hey DCA, recently I have been interested in buying an edc fixed blade, something between the boker ak1, mkm makro, lionsteel m1 or the upcoming terzuola designed mkm. My problem is that none of those come with a kydex sheath, and I don't want to carry them on my belt since I don' t always wear it and/or I don't wish to flash my knife to everyone i come across. Since i saw that you made a kydex sheath for your machete once, would you recommend it? Is it doable for someone without slightly larger than average hands?
Hey DCA and also Thomas. I was recently out on a hot date at a restaurant and I realized that the knife they gave me was the dullest little blade I'd ever seen. I instead used my edc knife (a Kershaw Blend) to cut up my meat but I was constantly paranoid that I'd get kicked out of the establishment if someone saw me using it. My question is, what are some great knives (under 60 bucks) that would work at good dinner knives where I live? Something that's not intimidating. P.S. The laws in my area restrict carrying any automatic or a knife with a blade length of over 2.5 inches. Thanks!
Hey DCA, I like the blade profile of my Civivi Mini Praxis, but it has some drawbacks. The handle is a little small for me, and I'm not a fan of liner locks in general. Can you recommend any flippers with the same blade shape (3 in. max) but with a larger handle and a finger-safe lock? Fidget factor is a bonus. Thanks!
As a guy that really considers for a long time (months) before pulling the trigger on knives over $100, I appreciate the budget segments. That said, are there any decent quality budget (in this case I expect more than $100) OTF knives out there? Just due to the mechanism they tend to be more expensive, so I'm not terribly optimistic...
i recently scaled and cleaned some fish with my mini 945 osborne so i had to clean it , i washed it good dry and then put a little reel oil in the blade joint and the spring lock and now it opens and closes ok but i'm having some lock stick now , and i oiled my bailout and it seems like the knives where better or smoother before all of this , what can i do to get it back smooth again like from the factory , they were broke in pretty good before
DCA, I’m putting together a 3-knife combo for day-hikes. I’m going for a blue theme for visibility, and I want the three knives to serve different purposes. I have just bought the blue Demko Freereign as my primary knife, and I plan to carry the blue Mora Eldris as a neck knife for whittling and small bushcrafting tasks. However, I have not yet settled on a folder as my backup knife, and I’d love to hear your recommendations. My requirements are(in order of importance): handles with a comfortable contour for extended use (preferably blue, orange would also be fine) 3-4 inch blade (preferably stainless and closer to 4), and I typically don’t prefer liner locks, though I’m willing to consider liner locking knives if they are time-tested (like the RAT-1). Thanks!
Great content, as always, guys. My question is, what would be some good options for a perfect camp ax? Something budget, something mid-range, and the ultimate camp ax.
For the gnome question, I'd hae suggested the Cold Steel Garden & Camp Machete. It's a long machete that has a angled bend towards tip that is meant to make it easier to cut stuff close to the ground (funnily enough almost like a golf club mentioned in the video)
Hi there I really hope you get this question so I’m just starting to get into the 100 to 250 dollar range knives and I’m looking for a good one that’s fairly big and it can either be a fixed blade or folder thank you so much love your channel
Hello DCA! Love the show and have been watching it for years by now. Ive been hearing a lot about that newfangled magnacut blade steel. What are the best knifes that use that steel from budget to high end?
Really depends on your needs. If in doubt go the BK16. OMHO one of the most versatile fixed blades out there. Great camp knife. I've been using one for over 10 years - no problems. The BK10 might be a better if your focus is more on general field use/survival. I had one for several years but eventually upgraded to an ESSE 6. Never owned or used a BK18 but I suspect that it would do well around camp except I'm not sure it would process wood well. Hope this helps. Have a great day.
Hi, I know you have already done this but could you recommend a knife that is good enough quality to be handed down as a heirloom. Preferably fixed blade, mirror finish and under 200. Also slightly bigger than the moki banff. Thanks
You should see the people in r/knifeclub who notice that their new knife is literally almost imperceptibly off center and asking if they should return it or why they paid so much for something 'defective'. Spoiled, we are. I understand expecting it from higher end models and makers but sometimes it really is ridiculous.
OK. I am looking for my first fixed blade knife! I want it to have a scout carry Kydex Holster! I’m looking at the 150 range, but it’s a tossup between tops and ESEE! I’m looking from 3 1/2 inches to 4 1/2 and for cross body appendix I’ve got some tactical muffin top, so be gentle lol. but if you can help it would be nice lol. love the videos!
Hi DCA and Thomas! I have a question that makes me anxious for months now. Why so many Tanto-shaped blades has hollow grind? I always thought that flat grind will be more tough than hollow. Is it just way to make knife cheaper or there is actual sense behind it? Thanks
Hollow grinds makes the edge itself less stable, but the trade-off is that you can get away with having a thicker and hence tougher blade overall while still retaining some decent cutting ability.
Just pre-ordered the Spartan Harsey fighter. Looks sick. What ever happened to that new different Japanese tip CS Kobun that was supposed to come out?? I needed that.
I really like the razel 4037 for a sub $100 fixed blade. Preordered mine and have carried it a lot. I also like the Kizer Begleiter fixed blade that (I think) came out recently. At least I found out about it recently.
Best new fixed blade under $100 is easily the Spyderco Mule Team 2. Spyderco's regular Mule Teams are also great, and good value, but the MT2 is an easily obtained production knife in CPM Spy27, which is similar in performance to steels like S35VN. There are a lot of customizations available, but you can get it direct from Spyderco for $154 with nice G10 scales and a kydex-style sheath (boltaron). I think it is $10 less for the leather sheath, or just $60 for the blade itself if you want to make your own handle and sheath. I have one and love it, but i think other people are missing out. The steel performs really well and it is a very useful design.
How is a 150$ knife the best knife under 100$? Ofc I get what you’re saying, & the Mules are definitely a good deal, but for most people it won’t be functional without handle scales & sheath.
@@dertodesking8379 Oops, you’re right! I got mine and a leather sheath for around $90 and wrapped the handle myself, so I had that in mind, but didn’t clarify for some reason. Honestly though, it would be well worth anybody saving a little extra to go for a full Mule Team kit over anything else in this video, at least in my opinion.
So Ive decided to get into watches a bit and I was wondering if there were any deep blue gentlemen's knives or is that more of an aftermarket scale kinda thing, thanks and love what you guys do
You have my sympathy. Knives can be expensive but watches are completely next level!! While there are many variables here regarding what you might want (size, style, etc.) and your budget, I recommend start by looking at WE knives. They are well established and premium (while not being top shelf) and over the years have offered up some great blades in various shades of blue - inc. what many would classify as 'gents'. Have a great day.
Can you recommend a "small" fixed blade (4" blade) I wear a size XL glove, I know you also have above average hands as well so I think you can choose a great handle and preferably under $120 I'm looking for a great all around knife for edc but something that doesn't feel out of place in the woods. Thanks!!
Hey DCA, learning to sharpen is a great offshoot of knife collecting. There are so many different methods, is there a progression of methods you recommend people learn as they pick up the skill? Any that you'd recommend more strongly based on what types of knives a person collects?
Guided-->Freehand Pocket knives - Guided or Freehand Kitchen - Freehand Personally, I tried doing it freehand first and it just didn't click. I went ahead and got a nice guided sharpening system, KME, and I absolutely love it. That being said, I do strop freehand.
Hey DCA. Love everything you do! I always thought carrying a boot knife is the most BA way to carry. Are there any decent boot knives out there? Are there any ways to reconfigure great edc fixed blades into a boot style carry? Thanks!
Measure once, cut twice question. DCA, you said the knife centering is not a mark of poor quality and it can happen to any knife any price. Is that always the case? Does that become an issue even if you spend money on say a $2,000 knife? If so, what is the dollar amount where it becomes unacceptable to have a knife that doesn't line up on center?
Totally subjective question - some would say any knife that you pay for should be centered, some would have an arbitrary limit, some wouldn't care much at all. Personally, it depends. I do think that blade centering should be high on the QC checklist. The higher the price I'm paying for a knife, the more critical I would be about something like that. But at the end if the day, it's usually something I can fix, if need be.
I use an unusual pull through honing device called the Block Sharpener. I had one back in the 80's and they still make them in the USA. Smart invention.
Hi there. It's been a while, but i'm still watching! I was wondering : how strong of a lock is the button lock ? I mean, locking knives are supposed to be safer than non locking ones but I personnaly feel safer with a slipjoint than with an untrustworthly locking blade. Thank you very much !
Safer with slipjoint? Dude do you even have all fingers still in one piece? ☠ Even old and trustworthy lockback knife is waaaaay safer to use than any slipjoint on the market. My advice: just try out ColdSteel tri-ad lock. 👉
Cold Steel Tri-Ad lock is the strongest. The majority of those who know will agree on this. Spyderco Compression Lock probably second. AXIS Lock third in my opinion. Then Button or Frame Lock. The problem with button lock design shows itself with hard use, if the button doesn't have a secondary safe latch, you can depress the button and it will disengage. They're great for quick opening and closing, but not so much for hard use.
@@Nudel-nc1cp i have some cold steels, this is not the question. My point is that, with slipjoints, you know they will close on you so you're careful. With a bad lock, you could have surprises. It's the surprises that are, in my opinion, dangerous.
@@jean-baptistedemets3477 Yes I somehow agree with that statement aswell. What I think is: why bother with slipjoints and sweating with most of the things you do with it when you can forget about it with decent locking knife? I agree with button lock statement too. However... Fixed blade is the solution for hard use. Folders in general are desigened for light to medium tasks.
@@Nudel-nc1cp why? Because i'm a knife guy, i just want them all! Also, the problem with cold steels is that, for the ones i've handled, they're a bit thick behind the edges. As for spydercos and their compression lock, it's a bit expensive. Finaly, i'm in europe and rocking the fixed blade is frowned upon to say the least... But in the end, a 9 euro MAM would do the job 90% of the time, it's all an excuse to talk knives and get cool toys !
I am not very happy with the Kershaw leek. When I grip the handle the liner lock disengages. I’m wondering If this is a one off problem and I can just exchange the knife or if this is a known issue and I should return the knife. This is a real bummer because it is a good looking knife and the blade came razor sharp. Unfortunately the lock issue is too big of a safety concern to ignore
OMHO serrations are very useful when getting through material is more important than the cleanliness of the cut. eg. I use serrated blades in my garden all the time to cut open bags, cutting hessian, etc... So usually not great for true EDC but they have a place. OMHO no one does serrations like Spyderco. They offer a range of tried & tested blades with dedicated serrations. Delica, Endura, Rescue are all good and if you need rust resistance their Salt series. Have a great day.
Always Day Carry? What about at night? Lol Cold Steel Recon 1, best large folding knife I've ever used, hands down. It's incredibly strong, has good steel (s35vn)with excellent heat treatment. It's nimble enough for delicate tasks, and robust enough with the tri-ad lock and G10 scales that you can abuse it without any worry. And I've been through many... Benchmade, Spyderco, CRKT, Kershaw, CIVIVI, SOG, etc... The Spear Point version Recon 1 is my favorite and have found it to be the most versatile. Clip Point is good with a finer tip. They feel amazing in hand ergonomically, the finger grooves are exactly where they should be(I usually stay away from finger groves), and it's easy to choke up on the handle due to a large-ish flat area in-between the first finger groove and sharpening choil. Slim profile for easy pocket carry. I've used a version of it for many years, even abused it more than most would, and it's never left me in need of anything else, and never let me down. Usually around $110, but if you catch a sale you can get it for 80-90. Trust me, get one, it will last you many many years. Read reviews if you want to know how badass and failsafe it is. Wish someone would have told me exactly this before I found out through trial and error. Cheers.
DCA, Is there any news on the CRKT RAZEL coming out in a higher end steel than D2? I would love to get one, but I would like one in a higher end steel. Thanks
In the world of costume fixed blades plunge line centering is very important to people. I make a few knives and its always been a challenge for me. But I looked at a couple vintage Randalls I own, and neither of them have centered plunge line. It made me feel a little better about my inability to have a centered plunge line on the knives I make. Some makers use a "Sharpening Choil" to hide a off centered plunge line. In the case of the Randalls it's a matter of function over aesthetics. I don't know how Loveless plunge lines are because I've never handled one. Personally I like things centered.
I used to obsess over them too starting with the choil then running my line up. Now for me it's alot faster marking the lines doing them first then I can use the height of my choil .5-1 mm a timeto find that sweet spot that centers the plunge for me. It really does speed up the profiling sharpening and finishing blade work
Look into the Gerson Therapy specified for arthritis. It's a dietary regimen. Juicing certain foods. You can totally heal yourself from that, not joking, look into it. Then you can choose whatever handle shape feels best.

Hi DCA, I love this series! I wanted to know what criteria you use to choose the questions? For example, do you choose questions only from the latest video in the series? or also from older videos? Thank you.
I keep a running document with questions, and try to pick ones that both inspire an answer in me, and is a topic I think others would find interesting too. -DCA
Just bought an srk-c and I’m loving it so far
Excellent choice. Really versatile fixed blade. Great camp knife. Good enough steel that's easy to maintain. Enjoy!!
Thanks.
I'm told that they have to collect it, but don't have to pay it to the states 😮
A design can be good either way -DCA
Try an aluminum buffing compound for removing the billboard/advertising on the blade. Less obvious in scratch pattern than sandpaper…
Just due to the mechanism they tend to be more expensive, so I'm not terribly optimistic...
i recently scaled and cleaned some fish with my mini 945 osborne so i had to clean it , i washed it good dry and then put a little reel oil in the blade joint and the spring lock and now it opens and closes ok but i'm having some lock stick now , and i oiled my bailout and it seems like the knives where better or smoother before all of this , what can i do to get it back smooth again like from the factory , they were broke in pretty good before
Dearest Doug funny, could you tell me a few knives that have mammoth ivory handle?
Thanks!
Does that sword have a bottle opener?
Is it a multi tool?
Hi DCA!!! Is there a good food prep knife small enough that could be carried horizontally?
next knife i want is in between the bk 10-16 and 18 not sure what i prefer at the moment
That's reddit for ya...
@@mokgable Still, there's plenty of good content than there is bad. That and more CRK safe queens than you can shake a stick at.
It is less expensive to produce a hollow grind. The flat grind/saber is indeed stronger.
Just pre-ordered the Spartan Harsey fighter. Looks sick. What ever happened to that new different Japanese tip CS Kobun that was supposed to come out?? I needed that.
Ok it’s killing me @knifecenter. What is the brown knife 7th from the left? It looks like a folding knife. Thanks. Keep up the good work!
Sig Sauer K320, made by Hogue.
Will KnifeCenter carry the new Mora Ash Wood collection? I have my eye on one in the series
I really like the razel 4037 for a sub $100 fixed blade. Preordered mine and have carried it a lot. I also like the Kizer Begleiter fixed blade that (I think) came out recently. At least I found out about it recently.
Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy! Keep up the great work
Best new fixed blade under $100 is easily the Spyderco Mule Team 2.
@@dertodesking8379
Oops, you’re right!
Guided-->Freehand
Pocket knives - Guided or Freehand
Kitchen - Freehand
Personally, I tried doing it freehand first and it just didn't click. I went ahead and got a nice guided sharpening system, KME, and I absolutely love it. That being said, I do strop freehand.
I love my Nax! It could be a smidge bigger but they are really cool. I’m all about the fixed blades!
Pretty cool fixed blade options even if few. The "most serious question of the day" was hilarious today.
@@chrisoneill325 100% agree
As long as it is 90% centered, even at high prices I'm not worried. -DCA
I use an unusual pull through honing device called the Block Sharpener. I had one back in the 80's and they still make them in the USA. Smart invention.
Is a CardSharp knife a good survival knife?
Although any knife is better than no knife, check this vid out for some suggestions: ua-cam.com/video/nzRAsZixM5c/v-deo.html
I have several bush craft knives, but with my luck I'd end up with nothing but the CardSharp knife I keep in my wallet when it hits the fan.
Hey David, what would be your recommendations on a serrated EDC knife or ones with serrations included?
OMHO serrations are very useful when getting through material is more important than the cleanliness of the cut. eg. I use serrated blades in my garden all the time to cut open bags, cutting hessian, etc... So usually not great for true EDC but they have a place. OMHO no one does serrations like Spyderco. They offer a range of tried & tested blades with dedicated serrations. Delica, Endura, Rescue are all good and if you need rust resistance their Salt series. Have a great day.
I've been looking into getting myself an adc fixed blade for myself in the sub $130 price range. What would you recommend?
Always Day Carry? What about at night? Lol
Cold Steel Recon 1, best large folding knife I've ever used, hands down.
Cheers.
Gospel of knives ….always great content !!!!
Why are plunge grinds typically behind a finger choil? I have been bit more than once and only Spyderco or slipjoint makers seem to do this correctly.
The pocket sheath on the razel is looking mighty tempting.
