Imho this vocal performance stands out in Dio's great legacy. No idea why this one is rather rarely reacted to, maybe 'cause it's a 'just' a Deep Purple cover?!?

    • @SupaBeluga
      @SupaBeluga Рік тому +9

Yeah I think the cover element (the David Coverdale connection), the fact that it wasn't a big single for them or anything, the fact that it's Rainbow and not Dio (so those not in the know are not likely to stumble upon it) and that it's mostly a big deal of a song from this SPECIFIC live performance from '77 probably keeps it out of the hands of the casual onlooker. You gotta be actually TRYING to find the good cuts to get to this one, I think. More popular tracks are more likely to bring in new viewers, as well, so these reactors have to think about their metrics, too. I think it's a real testament to Ken's genuine love of the craft that he's so assiduously pursuing the oeuvre of these great artists he wasn't already too familiar with!!

I read a couple days before this performance they played Austria and Blackmore was arrested, seems he thought a Security guard was too rough with a female fan in front of the stage so he lashed out and kicked the guard in the face with his big platform-booted foot, breaking his jaw! He wasn’t released until hours before this show. They didn’t get on stage here until midnight!

I just watched this again...I know, I have issues, but at the end when he sings "lord I misplaced my soul" it gives me chills every time. If you listen to the stuff from The Mob Rules album w/ Sabbath (like Falling off The Edge of the World for example) his voice has a lot more rasp at that point in time but everything from that album and Heaven and Hell are just stellar as well.

It's always so fun to see You UA-camrs react to this song. First, some smiling and laughing from Ritchie's impressive guitar "games". Then the head starts to nod to the rythm of drums and bass. And then! When Dio streches the first note all the way to the end of the first line - You become completely frozen. No muscles are moving! Then a little smile, eyes closed, and just shaking the head from side to side. As if saying - "This can't be a human being, doing that voice". No exceptions. This happens to all of us! This voice is out of this World! It's so good, it's insane.
Yes! The voice is the main attraction here, as in so much of their songs. But imagine if You heard only the drums, bass, keys and Ritchie's solo guitar! You would soon discover how very good they all were, together or in solos. What Cozy Powell did on the drums back then, have set the standards for most of later hard rock bands. Thanks for Your video and reaction! 😍🤘

It is quite a shock to the system when you know what you're witnessing, having some degree, probably a great degree, of awareness of what he's actually all about, and yet, artists like Dio go beyond one's musical range or comprehension. It's the same for Pavarotti, isn't it? You can feel what he's doing, you hear it, it vibes with you and, yet, it's just a spiritually awakening experience. Of course,j Richie and the rest of the band are such consumet musicians as well. Of the gods, truly. Thank you for your reactions, Ken. Much appreciated. You "feel" the music so intensely.

You should do "Gates of Babylon" as well. There's a music video of it on UA-cam. Music is playback but Dio's vocals are live.

It might be interesting to compare this to the original version with Deep Purple and David Coverdale. He has different, more bluesy approach and does an excellent job, especially considering his age. There is a live version at California Jam that is great, except for the end where bassist Glenn Huhges starts screeching like crazy and ruins the whole song. Pity.

David sounds constipated on the ‘74 Cal Jam recording if you ask me. I cringe every time I hear it. Asking someone to listen to that version after hearing this one could be considered cruel and unusual punishment. And I love David Coverdale and i heard his version years before hearing Ronnie’s too.

@@jimshelby406 Well, to each his own. I've heard people raise Glenn to the skies, and though his range is impressive, it's nails on a chalkboard to me. But I agree that Ronnies version is superior!

It’s so hard to compare him with Coverdale, bc their styles are so different. Coverdale was more bluesy in this, and it was awesome for him. Dio turned it into a freakin production.

As you know, this song was a Deep Purple song written for (and by?) David Coverdale, but in this instance, DIO has become Joe Cocker, making this song HIS, making this song as if heard for the first time.

The rare love song from Ronnie. He did just a few through the years. His wife/ex (sadly) Wendy was just as cool as he was. I believe she either was his manager all along or at some point. She was pretty sparkly, too! Def not bad to see.

I've heard the original, Dio's version of it and Glenn Hughes singing it live last November.
Glenn Hughes singing it is beyond something else!
He was 71 when I saw him last year and it was absolutely surreal. It's insane that at his age he's still able to sing for a nearly 2hrs show and not losing his voice ones while reaching insanely high notes cleanly and seemingly with no effort.
David Coverdale was a very good singer, Dio as well, but to me Glenn Hughes is just something else.

But really this version is better than Coverdale and Glen Hugles versions, much most technically intense and powerful.

Hughes is easily the worst version. Coverdale's is ok. Dio is all.

@@jacobwalsh1888 no doubt that Dio could si g and had a great voice, but in my opinion Hughes is a better singer than both Dio and Coverdale.
I guess with this particular song, it's the case of preference :).
Also, both Coverdale and Hughes are 71 and since I've had an opportunity to see both of them live last year, Coverdale couldn't do high notes well anymore and overall losing voice often during the show. Hughes on the other hand sang for almost 2hrs, could still cleanly reach insanely high notes and didn't lose his voice once.

Nowhere did I state that Dio was bad, he most certainly wasn't, but on a technical level, Hughes was and still is much better.
