The fabled reel to reel tape recorder. Ritchie used it as a pre-amp and echo device, along with a treble booster pedal.

An 11 minute song. No autotune, no pitch correction, no mash up copying of other people's songs. No bullshit. A Purple classic done justice by one of the best rock bands ever. UA-cam would do well to archive songs like this for posterity. And thank you for a great and honest analysis of the song from someone not accustomed nor necessarily inclined to such music. Really well done. Goosebumps says it all really doesn't it?

This was a super group at this stage, masters at their craft. The 1977 Munich concert was magical. All the songs were beyond exceptional. The song "Catch the Rainbow" is equally is good as this song. "16th Century Greensleeves", "Still I'm Sad", "Long Live Rock n Roll", Kill the King", "Man on the Silver Mountain", and "Do you Close Your Eyes" all great songs from this concert. I would have paid anything to be at this concert. Ritchie, Dio, Cozy, Stone, and Daisley couldn't have been any better. This is why Rainbow is one of my favorite groups.

I saw them on this tour (aged 14, so fortunate). Ritchie was my hero from DP, and it was the greatest evening of my life. RJD's scream after the guitar solo makes my eyes water every time - greatest moment ever in rock? Mistreated live is the GOAT, and I still play the track full volume at 59 years old. Rock on...

Cozy is one of the most underrated drummers.
He was a hired gun. Jeff Beck, Rainbow, Black Sabbath. Emerson Lake, and Powel, etc.
Also Richie never used his middle pickup. He had it disconnected. He had a signature guitar with no middle pickup. It didn't sell good because it didn't look right. They (Fender) later made another signature guitar with a middle pickup that was disconnected, but looked like a regular strat.

@@HofTheStage Your Welcome. I have been a big fan of Dios since he was a member of his first band Elf. Quick note
about the band Elf. There was an accident that claimed the life of original member Nick Pantas who was the guitarist and
injured keyboardist Doug Thaler. While recovering from his injuries Thaler moved to guitarist to replace the loss of Pantas and
Mickey Soule later on a founding member of Rainbow with Dio moved in to become the keyboardist. This was in February of
1968 just a few years before their first album Elf which was produced by Deep Purple. Well of course the rest is history after

Like you said you could listen to anything with him singing it and he brings so much more than just great sound he brings emotion and feeling. The bands today I just feel like they are just literally making a bunch of noise to make money. They all sound the same. Like they are all being handed the same script of the sounds for the month. This is a Deep Purple song written by Ritchie Blackmore and David Coverdale as I'm sure everyone already knows. I think like both Singers a lot. David is more bluesy and Ronnie gives it an operatic aesthetic. Blackmore's solo here isn't one of his better ones. He had spent two nights in a Vienna jail and went straight to the show in Munich after getting released. But his contribution to the evolution to Rock guitar can't be overstated.

For me personally, it's like listening to a story, which might not be the greatest story I've ever heard or read, but the way it is told is just amazing. For me, it is an example that what is important the most is not ""what", but ""how".
another thing that I'd like to mention is my personal theory that this particular song is a response of Ritchie to a Led Zeppelin song "Since I've Been Loving You". I'm convinced that deep down he wanted to write a bluesy song like that with some more punch in it and that is what Mistreated is. It is like: you did great, can I do better? because the theme is basically the same. Musical setup - minor blues. And at the end, it is not about who is better, but they push each other to be great. And R. J. Dio ? is untouchable among the rock singers.

DIO was and is still one of my favorite vocalists of all time. Too many songs of his to react to, so hard to think of one or two.
If you haven't already, try some songs from the Scorpions too. Klaus is an amazing vocalist as well.

If interested, one of Dio's last concerts was in 2009 with the group Heaven & Hell. This group is actually Black Sabbath under a different name. The 2009 Wacken concert had some great performances with the band member in their 60's. Dio's voice is still powerful. Songs like "I" and "Bible Black" are impressive for a bunch of old men. Dio passed away the following year.

I love Dio's take on this song! Truly, he just nails it! But, I would be remiss if I didn't mentioned that the original singer of this song also gave a legendary performance. Originally, this song was performed by Deep Purple, with David Coverdale on vocals and, of course, Ritchie Blackmore on guitar.

Ritchie used the Tape Machine to get more Gain out of the Guitar. Ritchie changed the Keyboardist. Bass Player and Drummer for Rainbow's Second Album. Rainbow Rising. This is the second lineup. There is not a Video but Rainbow's Cologne 76 Concert is absolutely amazing. This Concert I believe didn't start to way after Midnight. Ritchie has just got out of jail and he had to be driven about 3 hours to get to Munich for this show. Ritchie had kicked a man and broke his jaw. The man was hitting a 13 year old girl trying to get close and see the greatest guitarist in History.

I love the original version by Coverdale which was more bluesy. This version is operatic and different but Dio has absolutely captured the essence of the song. I like both versions equally TBH. In a bizarre way, it's similar to the way he replaced Ozzy Osbourne in black Sabbath who definitely had a blues voice and Dio simply set his own mark on both albums he released without trying to copy Ozzy in any way.
