Diomedes’ grandfather was Oeneus, king of the city of Calydon in central Greece. Diomedes’ father, Tydeus, was forced to flee Calydon after killing one of his relatives, possibly his uncle or brother. In Argos he married Deipyle, daughter of King Adrastus, who bore him Diomedes. Tydeus’s fate mirrored that of Polyneices, the son of the Theban king Oedipus, who also left his homeland for Argos and married a daughter of Adrastus. Tydeus supported Polyneices in his attempt to seize the throne of Thebes from his brother, Eteocles, but the expedition was a disaster and both men died.
Diomedes’ father was Tydeus who was exiled from the city of Calydon, and his mother was Deipyle of Argos. Tydeus participated with his army in the famous expedition known as “Seven Against Thebes”, during which he was killed.
Like his father, Diomedes was a valiant fighter.Ten years after Tydeus’ death, he joined a force known as the Epigoni (which means the descendants), who vowed to succeed where their fathers had failed in taking over Thebes.
The Epigoni fulfilled their vow and seized the throne. Diomedes also sought vengeance for his father’s exile from Calydon and killed the cousins who had taken the throne from his grandfather King Oeneus, and crowned Oeneus’s son-in-law king.
Yet Diomedes’ greatest achievement as a fighter, was in the Trojan War, where he led a fleet of 80 ships to carry the Greek army to Troy. Previously, he and Odysseus discovered Achilles who was hiding among the daughters of king Lycomedes and convinced him to join the War. In the Iliad, the poet Homer describes him as second only to Achilles, and makes frequent references to “Diomedes of the great War Cry.”
Diomedes killed many Trojans in battle and, with the assistance of the goddess Athena, he injured two deities. He wounded Aphrodite when she intervened to rescue her son, the Trojan hero Aeneas, from Diomedes’ onslaught. In the same battle Diomedes fought Hector, Paris’s brother and a favorite of Ares, the god of war. Athena helped Diomedes thrust his spear at Ares, wounding the god and causing him to flee the battle.
Diomedes’ partnership with Odysseus had an even more significant impact on the course of the war.Two episodes in particular illustrate the pair’s capacity for deception. In one story they tricked the hermit Philoctetes out of his magic bow and arrows, which he had inherited from Heracles. The weapons allowed the Greeks to fulfill one prophecy of victory over the Trojans.
Diomedes and Odysseus fulfilled another prophecy when they stole the Palladium, a wooden statue to Athena, from inside Troy. Both the Greeks and the Trojans believed that, as long as the Palladium remained inside its walls, Troy was safe. However, disguised as beggars, the 2 men passed unnoticed into the city and stole the statue. These stories demonstrate the importance of sacred objects to the morale of the side that possessed them.
When Diomedes returned to Argos following the end of the Trojan War, he did not receive a hero’s welcome, but discovered that his wife had been unfaithful in his absence and that his claim to the throne was disputed. This outcome was caused by the Greek prince Oeax, who believed that his brother Palamedes had been murdered by Diomedes and Odysseus. Accordingly, Oeax told Diomedes’ wife that her husband was returning from Troy with a new lover.
Diomedes left Greece for Italy. Some say that he was killed by the king of Apulia. Others that he founded several Italian cities, including Brindisi and Arpi.
After his death, Athena rewarded his deeds by making Diomedes a god.

My favorite hero from the Illiad & he is so underrated, he was said to be second only to Achilles & that warriors fieared him more than Achilles some times because of his great rage in battle

Achilles : I was the hero of the trojan war
people : let's make movies and tv series about him

Senior 02 breh Athena gave him a boost. U make it sound like it was all him. Achilles killed Memnon, Hector and Penthoslea. And defeated a river god though with help. Diomedes kept on getting wounded and retreating to the ship. Diomedes was formidable but the Greeks were pushed back to their ship by just Hector. Achilles returns and forces the Trojans back to their walls. Achilles was the biggest difference maker. Without Achilles the Greeks were hanging by a thread. I give Diomedes and Ajax credit for being that thread but they pale in comparison to Achilles.

@@Marco32144 first of all yes in some versions diomedes had help
secondly yes no hero in the trojan war matched achilles (diomedes was second only to him)
and third if you really think
diomedes was not such a huge figure read his life story right from start to the very end , defeating ares and wounding aphrodite was just one of his many amazing feats

Senior 02 u can’t wound a divine being without being one or having assistance. In all accounts I’ve read he had help from Athena. He is 2nd only to Achilles for sure. Maybe even stronger than Hector but I am just pointing out that Achilles was the difference maker. With all the heroes at their disposal the Greeks could not beat Hector and the Trojans back to their walls. Achilles joins the fight and the tides of the war change in days. Diomedes is great for sure. But the gap between him and Achilles is still a huge one. Achilles was not just a Demi god but a Demi god that can’t be harmed unless u strike his heal. He was also as fast as Heracles was strong.

Odysseus takes the credit with the fall of Troy but it was Achilles who go him to the walls by taking out the Trojans 3 powerhouses. Memnon, Hector and Penthiseleia. Diomedes was good but didn’t kill a major hero unless I’m missing something

How is Diomedes largely unknown when of all the Greeks in the Illiad he is the youngest, most feared, and humble..he makes two gods bleed, one of them the god of war who actually retreats from him. Even zeus protected Hector from him. O yes, he also becomes a god.

Probably only claimed later by Argos, but in actuality he was vassal-king of Tiryns.

This was a nicely short but informative video. My only complaint is the music. This history does not need the somber tone of the musical instruments. Your voice alone, and the history is sufficient.

Ναι.
