Created as a companion video to my series of CARTOON EVOLUTION videos (specifically the one focusing on Hanna-Barbera and MGM's manic and mad cap silent stars, 'Evolution of TOM AND JERRY Over 82 Years (1937-2019) Explained'), I take a look at the vocal evolution of the characters and take a look at the rare moments where the pair actually talk, as I compare the voices of Tom & Jerry's official voice actors over time, including the William 'Bill' Hanna, Clarence Nash, Mel Blanc, June Foray, Sara Berner, Billy Bletcher, Daws Butler, Paul Frees, Richard Kind, Dana Hill, Harry Lang, Ira Buck Woods, Phil Harris, Terence Monk, Stephin Fetchit and Lillian Randolph. I also touch on the work of Joe Alaskey, Jeff Bergman, Bob Bergen, Billy West, Tom Kenny and Frank Welker.
Here's my look at Tom and Jerry's Voices Through the Years!

Also, my favourite "voice" for Tom & Jerry is William Hanna, you can never forget his recognizable screams, yells, and howls.
@Shiva R RIP William And Joseph. Thx
Ernesto Chacon Or how he can make Tom talk charismatic.
I hope Bill Hanna reprises his role from the upcoming 2021 film.
The vocals of William Hanna are reused in the flash animated Tom and Jerry show on Boomerang.
Christian Cagadas Well you mean that they are going to use archive audio of William Hanna for the Tom and Jerry movie in 2021
William Hanna's screams, Billy Bletcher's "IN ME POWER" and Ira Woods' "solid serenade" are my favourites
“hehehehhehheh in me power! hehehehheheheh”
My favorite version of tom's voice 6:33
Harry E. Lang too. "One for the money (hic!), two for the show (hic!), three to make ready (hic!), and four she goes!"

The Milkion Dollar Cat! A great short!
Tom 1943
I love that line
3:02, The most legendary Tom “AAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!”
Agreed xD
I prefer the one where he wakes up a sleeping King. The whole episode was based on the premise to never wake the king up, they spent almost the entire episode building it up and when Tom finally screams and wakes up the King, that’s the 2nd funniest shit i’ve ever seen in my life (after pickle rick).

@Donut Sing! Same 😂
I preferred when they removed the cat screeches from Tom and gave him more of a human voice for his screams of pain. It makes it more hilarious.
makes it seem less like animal abuse
I loved Tom's human screams than the early ones where he sounded more cat like.

All of William Hanna's yells & voicework had me laughing on the floor! 4:50 May he and Joseph Barberra rest in peace as they're work is still timeless!!!!
I love Tom and Jerry, but I never knew the original voice of Donald Duck, Clarence Nash did the early vocals of Tom when he was more of a cat. I just thought it was a random person doing the generic cat howls and screeching
Yep. Clarance Nash provided tom's cat yells until suffering cat's. Where they decided to use Hanna's screams which they started using on fraidy cat and the new scream Hanna did Since Puss n Toots
That was before this (6:38)
I was listening carefully to Tom's yells very closely and I did see the similarities between him and Donald Duck's voice

Sarah Berner's voice of Jerry is pretty adorable.

To me she suits Jerry the most.
Of course, it is

While I was fully aware of William "Bill" Hanna providing the yells, gasps, screams, and howls for Tom & Jerry along with Richard Kind and Dana Hill voicing them in the Tom and Jerry: The movie, I am very surprised that Clarence Nash (Donald Duck) was one of the voices for Tom. 😯
Yep. He was the first person to provide Tom's voice on the cartoons and keep doing it until suffering cats. After that Hanna keep doing Tom's screams Since he started doing them on fraidy cat and developed them with Puss n Toots giving is the first time Tom did one of his iconic screams

I listen to “Is You Is, Or Is You Ain’t My Baby” constantly! After hearing it as a kid looking it up was pretty much inevitable.
Solid Seranade and Texas Tom! Great shorts!
Maybe I'm the only one but I like the voices given to Tom and Jerry in the movie. Maybe they shouldn't speak as much as they do, but how their voices sound fit how I'd imagine it myself, certainly more than a lot of the earlier voices
I believe the movie itself wasn't bad either, even though I haven't seen it in many years now I don't understand why people didn't like and I agree their voices do match with how I would imagine them sounding.
I didn't find the movie to be bad. People are stupid
@@damone920 I agree.
Same
I enjoyed this movie a lot when I was a kid. Now as an adult, it's not one that I would want to watch, but it definitely hit its target audience well.
I'm sorry William Hanna didn't do more voice work. He was very talented in this instance, too. Those "Tom" screams, shrieks, laughs and hollers are classic.
I have to say, Sara Berner’s voice for jerry is perfect, it really fits in a way if Tom and Jerry wasn’t a silent duo.
I will laugh if they did Tom and Jerry Movie using joke from 1940
*_I hope Ryan Reynolds both voiced Tom and Jerry in the upcoming live-action film. Both cat and mouse has the same healing powers like Deadpool._*
But William Hanna, Harry E. Lang and Mel Blanc from archival recordings will reprise their roles as Tom and Jerry from the upcoming 2021 film instead.
@@davaotripsters that can maybe happen or just call Spike Brandt to provide Tom's screams Since he is the one doing Tom's voice Since 2005. The thing is he just Uncredited himself
I mean you aren't far off doc, While not full on Looney Tunes levels of insane Tom is capable of returning from being reduced to dust and can also regenerate from being vaporized. Jerry being no different, also recovering from large wounds as well.
But not only do they possess a potent healing factor they are also surprisingly strong in their own right, Tom has ran through solid material like walls: ua-cam.com/video/hMefSb8mVwA/v-deo.htmlm49s
Consistently might I add:
ua-cam.com/video/1sLENwc0A5s/v-deo.html#t=12m42s
He can crash through all sorts of walls and keep going in fact, and even destroyed a car and tree without an axe or weaponry of sorts, Jerry isn't far off himself despite his small size having actually traded blows with the cat at one point beating him once when he got REAL ANGRY:
www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=m.youtube.com/watch%3Fv%3D7IoqsMdAmG4&ved=2ahUKEwiz_cz_tvTkAhXWGDQIHUqaB2sQwqsBMAJ6BAgEEA8&usg=AOvVaw2gxaH4UQIrkIRQ3YSzLgAy
Both survived some rather life thrashing situations like Tom himself actually taking more of the punishment surviving massive beatdowns from large animals like elephants and lions alike, repeatedly surviving massive explosions consisting of tens of dynamite sticks and at times has only felt slightly irritated because of them, heck he was actually completely fine after falling from outer space at rapid speeds, Has survived his body being shattered into multiple pieces from terminal velocity falls into water and all sorts of surfaces, etc. But most impressively both have supposedly city-threatening explosion from a white mouse, it was stated in the episode the white mouse had consumed the amount of destructive power to level a City:
ua-cam.com/video/A2KxWclh50A/v-deo.htmlm27s
And here while very hurt but still standing: ua-cam.com/video/TdxP5YqWtnU/v-deo.html
They're also very quick, Jerry can keep up with Tom who easily outpaced a car and kept up with an airplane in the episode *_"Southbound Duckling."_* Ran so fast he left behind a trail of fire on the ground and also ran so fast he appeared as a blur to Spike, both have even dodged Lasers before in that one Martian movie.
So yes the role is rather familiarizing.
I can almost hear it. He nailed both Deadpool and Detective Pikachu brilliantly. But I think I'd rather give someone else a chance. How about Jared Leto (Harry Goldfarb, The Joker) and Ellen Wong (Knives Chau)?
@@yourcordialvermillionchapw2398 You really are smart with cartoon physics. But a cartoon character easily "died" without a consequence yet resurrected from an amount of dangers that they even faced with. Also, not to mention that Tom is stronger than Spike in most of the episodes yet he never showed his true strength due to his cowardice nature over large people he's been facing. It's like David died from the hands of Goliath because he never bring a stone to a fight. That's the same thing for Tom when he never brought never a weapon that is stronger than just a fist. No wonder why he's still weak in a 2014 cartoon that is made with Flash compared to his counterparts through the decades.
Yeah, you are right. Tom has never been weak neither Jerry did. Everyone can show their strength whatever they want but they never mustered up to prove the point because they are weak which it wasn't true (or depends on a justifiable situation). It's still sad that great cartoon nowadays focuses more on "character development" and "storyline" that is somehow off the charts while cartoon gags (like anvils on a head, dynamite as a candlestick, etc.) were forgotten as a cliche.
William Hanna's voice really suits Tom, in franky, naughty, fun and somehow yet romantic . I grew up watching Tom & Jerry with my dad, he really loves Tom and his voice (by Hanna) and would impersonate it for made me happy and laugh off .
Thank you for the memories 🥰🤗✨️
God knows how many more people have actually "voiced" these characters....

The William Hanna screams are iconic to Tom. I can't imagine them doing anything else and having it be nearly as funny. And I don't know if it's considered 'insensitive' anymore, but the Ira Woods song number is still great.
I always used to wonder where they got, “Don’t you believe it!”

Harry E Lang.
There's something hilarious about them never being voiced again after the movie.
This is absolutely fascinating. I did not realise about Clarence Nash voicing Tom in the first shorts ... Will Hanna was a great voice actor. They were all great... helped to bring these characters to life. Thank you for putting this together :)

The yell at 3:02 is what I remember from my childhood...
It saddens me that nearly everyone died, except Richard Kind

William Hanna always had the most iconic Tom and Jerry screams. I wasn’t ever a lover of Tom and Jerry skits, but I think the slapstick is funnier when it sounds more like a human scream than a regular cat or mouse.
I really wonder if it was Harry E. Lang who actually provides the original screams cause many sources think it was Clarence Nash. I can understand why some think so cause it does resemble Donald Duck’s angry quacks.
Billy Bletcher was just a legend of that intimidating voice back then. You’d never think from hearing his voice he was only 5’2”. But a small stature doesn’t mean you can’t have a deep voice.
A voice evolution for Droopy Dog wouldn't be a bad idea. He has a lot of voices and he shows up in Tom & Jerry movies quite a lot.

I think why Tom and Jerry the Movie failed was due to the fact they misunderstood the reason they didn’t speak often. It’s not that they were deliberately pretending mute to one another out of loathing- it’s that they tended to be quiet unless it was something very important or for comedic effect when gestures alone wouldn’t have expressed. It’s not that they couldn’t talk, but they tend to let their actions speak for themselves.
Yeah, I think for them actions speak louder than words ^_^
I think they probably knew that but they just had to explain why they never talked up until that point

I’m sorry to say everyone but Clarence Nash never did the voice for Tom in the early shorts. It was Harry Lang. Lang would also voice Butch the Cat in Chip Off the Old Block in 1942 using a strikingly similar voice to Nash’s Donald Duck. Red Coffey and Jimmy Weldon would also take influence from Nash for Little Quacker and Yakky Doodle.
This btw was proven back in September 2022 in the book Cartoon Voices by Keith Scott, one of the most accurate sources for voice acting filmographies. Also as of that date, IMDb has been edited to have the correct actors credited.
