I’m really hoping that Tom and Jerry will find an outlet to truly shine again. I would really like to see them go back to their roots much like Warner Bros is doing with the Looney Tunes right now.
Scooby-Doo could possibly work, Looney Tunes not so much. Mostly because of their different comedy styles. The comedy from Looney Tunes comes more from the words the characters say rather than the physical actions. Tom and Jerry’s comedy is based more on physical humor than verbal humor.
you just can't beat the OG cartoon golden age Tom and Jerry. That was when they were at their best and had the most detail and effort put into them. I don't think anyone will be able to ever truly recreate the quality and style of their golden age. I would also point out one thing you really missed and found it a critical aspect of the golden age shorts, the screams and vocalizations of Tom and Jerry. Because they very rarely talked these vocalizations were their true voices and were done by William Hanna himself. I don't think anyone gives these screams of comical and yet also visceral pain enough credit.
Yeah, the original Hanna-Barbera were the best. Sad that we'll probably never see them on TV again, what with the ever increasingly draconian "anti-violence in cartoons" laws.
Well said! It is these screams that really make my belly hurt from laughter every single time. They are an integral part of the Tom and Jerry cartoons.
I don’t know how to describe this feeling but Tom and jerry has given me so much happiness as a kid, it feels kinda saddening knowing that the classics won’t be remembered eventually.
As a child, I saw all these versions in cartoon network in no order. At that time I would think why the characters looked different every episode. Thanks for the detailed history 🙂
I know!! I had the DVDs and some of them had no order either. So when I saw some of the later ones I thought they were older ones cause they didn't look as good😂 So weird to find out the actual timeline
My father once bought all twelve seasons of the 'old' tom and jerry for our vacation car rides. I have seen every episode 100 times and I still love it
I cant figure out what period of tom and jerry I would've watched I cant rememeber much of it but I remember my cousins having a case of DVDs with a bunch of the series haha
@Wonkelinex When Tom got Jerry inside his mouth Tom :... Tom :... Tom : No Im not gonna end jerry like this! Tom : *Spits Jerry out* Me : What the?! Why did you do that-
E Man I think that they named Tom that because of the fact that he’s a cat, but then Jerry got his name because in the war British soldiers were known as “Tom” or “Tommy” by German soldiers because that to them was a stereotypical British name, and British soldiers called German soldiers “Jerry” since they thought that was a stereotypical German name.
I grew up watching Tom and Jerry. It was a cartoon that I love for it's slapstick gags and a large amount of violence that they got away with back during the '40s and '50s. As an adult, I have to say that after 8 decades, these classic shorts still hold up really well. Heck, I'd even argue that the slapstick holds up better than Looney Tunes. William Hanna and Joesph Barbara did a really fantastic job with the comedic timing of the gags and they established the one single rule that the title characters aren't allowed to talk with a few exceptions of course. Overall, Tom and Jerry will always hold a special place in my childhood as a timeless classic and will always be considered one of the greatest cartoons of all time.
@@FelipeSouza-gb7yf - It's a good one, great to use for criticizing certain corporate decisions by companies and politicians when they do something that nobody else likes. IE: why Spongebob got so many cruddy seasons in the middle.

the new one looks awful compared to the old ones, not that it's particularly bad (it's a hell of a lot better than other flash animated cartoons) but it's just so... layered? like, you can tell that some parts are just being tilted on a layer or stretched and squashed on a layer rather than being redrawn to make sense with the body, and it just looks awkward and incredibly amateur also the old ones are funnier and more memorable
Tbh I agree, the old one ruled! The new one. . . Not so much. Basic flash animation really isn't good enough, they should stick to the old animation. I am an animator and I even know what's best for T&J.
The early Tom & Jerry cartoons before MGM shut down for the first time are absolutely some of the best. The only stuff I've seen come close to it are some of the non-crossover movies. The new Tom & Jerry Show isn't really up to snuff with the slapstick feeling, but I feel like the reoccurring detective depiction of the two keeps the pair authentic enough to their roots while re-imagining them suitably for modern young audiences
My grandpa (from Mexico) loved Tom and Jerry. He didn't need to know English to understand what was going on. I grew up watching Tom and Jerry, knowing this much this episode is better then that controversy, I wouldn't even have guessed. All the episodes were absolutely good, even if there was more or less violence. The series as a whole has a perfect balance.
thats kinda similar to mines my gramps came to the us in the late 60s knowing little to no english. ive heard he was a huge tom and jerry fan, he would wake up early on his days off just to watch it. sadly he passed back in ‘93 and i really didn’t get to meet him.
Oh my goodness! My grandparents were Mexican too and they introduced me and my little brother and sister to Tom and Jerry. We were mesmerized we loved them, we would watch the old shorts over and over and over again.
“In this series, we have briefly discussed the evolution and history of Tom and Jerry, right from their inception in 1940 up until to the modern age. What we have yet to cover, however, is the evolution of the character’s voices, given life by a small number of voice actors over the years. So, without further comment from myself, I will allow the voice actors to guide you in this edition of Cartoon Evolution.” “YEEEOWWW!” “If this is your first time checking out one of my videos...”
I've always been fond of the Chuck Jones era myself. I tend to love his expressions and movement in cartoons, they have such a personal signature of his unique style and I like it a lot.
I like them too. I really began to love them once Dean Elliot replaced Eugene Poddany as music director. The jazzy intros to Jerry, Jerry, Quite Contrary, and Cannery Rodent, really appeal to me.
When I was a kid, I used to think that Chuck Jones' version are Tom and Jerry's past because not only they looked younger, its also looked like it was before they met Tom's owner which is the lady who kept shouting "THOMAS"
I've seen Tom and Jerry for years, but never have I once though of it as violent, just entrainment. I think of violence on a more mortal kombat level. People are just way too sensitive
- Vixlo - it's not the kids who watched it, it's the parents who are like "omg!!!!! that's too violent for my kid!!!!!!" which... most of the current generation isn't having kids right now, so that only leaves boomers and gen x 🤔
My family never stopped me and my siblings, cousins from watching the show. In fact they sometimes used to sit down and watch it with us and actually enjoy it.........good times
All the 1940 - 1958 ones. The Original and the best ones. I respect both Gene and Chuck Jones, but theirs never had that special feel of the William and Joseph versions. The originals were also Hilarious as the others weren't as good.
Tom and Jerry is definitely so popular in part because of how simple and universal the premise is. No matter what culture you're from, you understand Tom and Jerry.
I really love the 40's and 50's designs for Tom and Jerry, but for some reason, their designs from '63 to like '69 just have a special place in my heart. I just feel like the animation was at that perfect in-between classic and new.
I think tom and jerry was an example of a basic idea that was executed really well. The animation and timing and energy of the slapstick was the best there was at the time. I think the problem of the later shorts and series was the lack of the great exicusion of the slapstick. Thus making the farly basic idea more obvious and less interesting to see. Plus the later movies just throwing them in other movies like willy wonka and the chocolate factory for no real reason.
I always knew Tom and Jerry is an old cartoon but I didn't expect most of my favorite episodes were made in the 40s, 50s, and 60s. I always thought the episodes I watched were from the 90s. The Animation before is much greater than today's animation (my opinion only).
Watching this makes me miss my childhood so much. My parents grew up watching it; I grew up watching; now my kids are beginning to watch it more. That's a legacy from Hanna & Barbera
I remember having a DvD player and I would always insert a Tom and Jerry marathon with, like, 20 different episodes. So if you asked me if I liked Tom and Jerry, I would say, no, I loved it.
I personally like the Tom and Jerry Tales the most simply because the animation is very consistent and beautiful and has a nostalgic to me honestly. The second best for me is the Tom and Jerry Show of 1975. :) Also Unpopular opinion: I actually liked the first Tom and Jerry Movie because of the musical aspect and the songs such as “Friends to the End” and “Do I Miss You”.
@@aurograce2983 It is a good movie. I was only unfortunate that the formula they used were the one everyone was using at the time. But for people like us who didn't have much to compare it to when we were kids, it WAS original. Giving them voices and adding a rather wholesome story create a dimension that expand on these characters, not straying from original. I felt like because I was growing repeating exclusively mute comedies like Tom & Jerry, Mr. Bean, Charlie Chaplin, I have a great appreciation for humor, but at the same time I felt like it made me one of the more quiet kid. But introducing voices and musical to characters I'm already familiar with gave me a much better confidence to try socializing. But even without that personal connection, I can still objectively say that the movie wasn't bad, it was just unfortunately bland at the time.
Tom and jerry never gets old, it’s always great to watch them. I didn’t know they were on air for 80 years. It’s good seeing them evolve through the years. I hope they can keep going. I always love the theme song.
Fun fact. So when I was working on Tom and Jerry and Willy Wonka, I got to talk with Spike Brandt quite a bit about working with Mr Barbera. Apparently, Mr. Barbera storyboarded the Karate Guard. That is truly amazing considering his age at that time. Spike and Tony did the beautiful character layouts and tries to get the short nominated for an Oscar, wanting to get Mr Barbera a final Oscar. I do believe the film was in consideration, but I am not sure if it made the cut. Anyone here know? Regardless, its a wonderful cartoon to end the story of Tom amd Jerry's theatrical series.
Unpopular opinion: Yes the '92 movie was a mistake but it guilty pleasure of a generation...and more well done than some of the worst incarnations or movies starring the pair.
Tbh I definitely believe that the classic 1940-1967 cartoons were absolutely the best. They were made for all ages, not just children. New Tom and Jerry after 1967 (after Chuck Jones era) until present are too kid-friendly and are really boring to watch for older ages. The Hanna-Barbera episodes were absolutely the best, but the Gene Deitch and Chuck Jones episodes were also really great, and all 161 classic episodes are absolutely enjoyable for all ages from children to old people.

That was a heartbreaking episode. To think I've seen DAMN near every episode of T&J that and Jerry freezing in the snow and Tom taking him in... near tear jerkers
Fred Quimby’s production, the first and oldest version where always the best. You can see it from the animation and direction quality. The modern generation just doesn’t hold a candle. Other than that, outstanding work, mate!
Tom and Jerry is the cartoon who had introduced one of the Franz Lizst Piece Hugarian Rhapsody 2 to kids. every kids have listened to that piece many many times. when watching "The Cat Concerto"
The cat concerto will probably be my all time favorite cartoon along with the dover boys because it is able to bring in laughs while still being a beautiful piece of animation and music
I kinda feel sorry for Deitch. He was willing to stay true to Tom and Jerry and made most what he did despite not being into the series and he still got some hate for it.
I thought he did pretty OK with what they had. Really? Death threats over a cartoon? Nearly 6 decades/3 generations later, it doesn't seem to matter anymore. Deitch's best in T&J were "Buddies Thicker Than Water", "Switchin' Kitten", and "The Tom and Jerry Cartoon Kit".
Gene's shorts weren't that good but he did at least kept closer to the Hanna Barbara design of the mid to late 1950s then Chuck's shorts. If Gene had more shorts to work on they probably would had been better.

I always assumed that Tom was named that way since he’s a cat, you know, like a Tomcat

At least the 1992 movie brought us a meme: "We got to have... _MONEY...!"_

Weird thing I noticed, the seven animators noted are the amount of Oscar’s tom and Jerry won.
The old tom and Jerry is so much better than the new one.
The new one isn't funny at all
the new one looks awful compared to the old ones, not that it's particularly bad (it's a hell of a lot better than other flash animated cartoons) but it's just so... layered? like, you can tell that some parts are just being tilted on a layer or stretched and squashed on a layer rather than being redrawn to make sense with the body, and it just looks awkward and incredibly amateur
also the old ones are funnier and more memorable
The Original 1940 - 1958 were the best!
PikaPerfect I agree
Tbh I agree, the old one ruled! The new one. . . Not so much.
Basic flash animation really isn't good enough, they should stick to the old animation.

And I guess the New show has brought Toodles (the yellow female kitty) back because she has only appeared on only one episode from the old one

*YES*
Whats bext tom and Jerry and looney tunes and scooby doo
I always knew Tom and Jerry is an old cartoon but I didn't expect most of my favorite episodes were made in the 40s, 50s, and 60s. I always thought the episodes I watched were from the 90s. The Animation before is much greater than today's animation (my opinion only).
Watching this makes me miss my childhood so much. My parents grew up watching it; I grew up watching; now my kids are beginning to watch it more. That's a legacy from Hanna & Barbera
Thanks to them
I remember having a DvD player and I would always insert a Tom and Jerry marathon with, like, 20 different episodes.
Also Unpopular opinion: I actually liked the first Tom and Jerry Movie because of the musical aspect and the songs such as “Friends to the End” and “Do I Miss You”.
I grew up on Tom and Jerry movie and I sometimes find the money song stuck in my head. It’s a good movie

My favorite Tom and Jerry incarnations were the ones done by William Hanna and Joe Barbera when they were released by MGM from the 1940's-1957, Tom and Jerry Kids, Tom and Jerry the Movie and the ones from the Warner Bros direct-to-video animated videos (e.g. The Magic Ring, A Nutcracker Tale, Sherlock Holmes, among others)
Thank you so much for making this Dave.
Do you still remember the Tom and Jerry kids opening song?
@@ralphjosephacobo8014 Of course I do.

Septic Plier I always wanted to never got to it
I saw it, I really loved it but I prefer them being silent
Areeb PlayzForFun I like to watch them without voices but it’s easier with voices
@@Mirrorcomics24 Yeah but then again I have a feeling that if they do add voices, they'll do it in a way that'll ruin it all
