I saw him perform in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA. Afterward, my Brother-in-law said that, from that night onward, we would be able to say that we had seen and heard Eric Clapton at his best and, if someone asked, "When, in the Late Sixties?" we would be able to reply, " No, in Clapton's late sixties." Very solid solo for 66 years of age. His playing evolved, he takes now much more into consideration what base tone the chord is using. This way it sounds more melodic, more detailed. Nowadays, with 66, Eric would probably "win" against Hendrix. What do you think?
I can't speak tot he Hendrix comparison, but I agree that Eric's playing has evolved. In his Cream days it was mostly gestural. He played riffs he had learned and weaved them together. Now he makes a lot of his own melodies that harmonize beautiful with the chord, though there are still plenty of blues stock phrases...
