He bought me a dozen roses and when Jeff found out, this song was playing on the radio and he asked me that question: if he had 2 dozen roses would it change my mind. I told him only one! He was my one and only forever love.

      I can actually tell you i remember the late 90s and early 2000s. This song actually echoed quite well everywhere i gone. Though only being born in 95, its scary how much i remember. This is why i fell in love with texas and dont want to leave as where i was born in washington nothing like this was present. If anything, i still recall the drastic changes and languages when being OTR with my father the couple of years he did it Great times i truly miss.

  • @jk92-2
    @jk92-2 Рік тому +12

    I’m not joking when I say I’ve watched this live performance by Shenandoah of their 1989 classic ‘Two Dozen Roses’ about 50 times in the past few days.
    There’s so much going on. I’ve limited my comments to the section after the guitar solo for brevity. ‘If I could cry a little harder’ sings lead vocalist Marty Roban. You know what? I almost believe him. There’s sincere pain in that lilting voice of his; a yearning to be set free from his loneliness. The sparseness of the drums during his delivery of this line just emphasises this feeling of isolation. Mike McGuire on the sticks showing great restraint as he lets Marty’s delivery speak for itself; it’s Marty singing directly to his ex-lover. If I cried a little harder would you take me back?
    Marty continues to address hypothetical questions to his ex lover; ‘... and got a little less sleep at night, if I had two dozen roses would it change your mind?’ Marty backs away from the mic after pondering this question for the first time (3:06). He looks away, is he contemplating if the previously mentioned changes to his actions could result in his ex taking him back live on stage as his band performs? I think he is. The sweat on his brow is evident as he returns to the mic to repeat his question (3:10). I believe this sweat is a result of his deep reflection on the words he just sang; maybe Marty became overcome with nervous emotion as he sang from the heart. The crowd might as well have not been there. In Marty’s eyes he was singing directly to his former lover and maybe for the first time considered the possibility of a reunion actually happening, and not just some corny line for a song.
    Marty continues to repeat his question and even lets out a guttural moan (3:31). As the outro continues, Jim Seales on lead guitar cracks a brief smile (3:40). It’s as if he knows something is about to happen, and he’d be right. The band abruptly stop playing. For a second you could be convinced that the song is over. But no. Marty is not done with his reflection, and poses the question once again ‘baby would it change your mind?’ The band rejoins him and continues to play the outro as Marty lets out more guttural moans and pines for some closure on whether his ex lover will change her mind.
    We are then blessed with a different angle of the stage (4:01) for the band’s latest display of trickery. Bassist Ralph Ezell is our focus. His neck moves in time with the drums, his movements not being dissimilar to a pigeon. Once again the band abruptly stops. Surely after the previous false ending, this should signal the culmination of the song? But once again we are tricked as Marty comes in once more to ask his question. Ralph is loving this; watch his head as the band resumes at 4:08; he can’t contain his glee and looks out to the crowd as if to say ‘gotcha’.
    This is a great song and a timeless performance. The tape hiss and lo-fi quality of the recording gives it much greater warmth and vintage feeling than the studio recorded track. It’s a classic track and I’m just happy I can share that in 2023.

    And an older bottle of wine

    When you hear a band that sounds this great and made as many great songs as they did, it makes you realize how deep down in the septic tank modern country music is.

    I saw Shenandoah in Lake Elsinore, CA back in the day when they were hot. I got Marty Raybon to sign my 🧢 cap. I still have that cap put away somewhere. Does anyone care about my story? 😄

    Being 19 when this came out, I was into punk and alternative rock. As I got older and appreciated roots music, this is just pure class and beautiful music. I wish I had appreciated it back then. Like the Desert Rose Band. Great musicians and songwriters. Nothing in country now can hold a candle to this. It’s made me realize that sometimes great things are right in front of you…. But you tend to find it later in life. Live in the moment 😢

    I haven't listened to country in over two decades. I check back in on Spotify frequently, but nothing compares to the older stuff.

      John Robertson it’s not the same same but, check out the red dirt/Texas country scene. It’s more traditional....there’s a good mix of outlaw and cowboy country.
