In today's video we embark on a new series called, "Rediscovering myself in my 30s." This is episode one where we discuss learning new skils, in particular crocheting and knitting!
In this series, we’ll tackle big topics-those essential discussions that sometimes we shy away from. We'll discover new things about ourselves, and I’ll be sharing more openly than I ever have, inviting you to do the same if you want to. Together, we'll focus on building our independence and self-reliance, learning new skills, building community and pushing our boundaries and comfort zones.
So, join me as we embark on this journey of rediscovery, where every step forward is a step towards becoming a more authentic and true version of ourselves. Let's learn, grow, and thrive together.

Hey Immy, I just thought I would mention… in all honesty and sincerity, I truly feel that some of your best content was during the pandemic. Perhaps you felt a bit lost and not really connected to where you wanted to be during that time, but I want to say that I found your content to be uplifting and helpful. I felt connected to you and your community during a time that left a lot of holes in our social lives and daily routines. Please don’t beat yourself up for what you put out into the world during that difficult time because I, personally, felt just a little bit more grounded and happy every time I tuned into one of your vids during that time of emptiness. Together, I think we all relied on one another to offer just a bit of inspo during that rather bleak time. Thanks for that!! I appreciate you!! Ⓜary💕

Nice to see some long format. I don't love the shorts and find a scroll by. I'm on the other side of 35 this year. What I can say is you don't stop rediscovering yourself because you keep changing. Your hopes and dreams constantly change. What I find more helpful is picking guiding values: sustainability, wellness, and community (for us). Then I think about how what I'm doing aligns with my values.

Likewise, I feel like shorts promote mindless scrolling and I am not as attentive as I am with long-form content, which is kind of obvious, if you think about it. I am 31 and love this channel.

I'm 71 and I am going to learn crochtet again my mum showed me many years ago, didn't keep it up, I am so impressed with that lovely jacket you crocheted, I am really inspired to try again now. I am wanting to learn to sew clothes but there don't seem to any teachers you can actually go and sit with something I like as I learn by doing it with someone showing me.

Hi @annbeirne9583, I’m just turned 60, a week ago, and similarly to you, I have not yet gotten the knack of how to Crochet, despite being an avid knitter since my teens!
I have never quite gotten how to do it!☺️ Good luck with your project, Ann
So @Immy, I love the muti generational inspiration that you have sparked in your usual humble way, thanks so much, I am eager to give the pattern a go, am hoping to make a blanket to give to a friend for her special Birthday later in the year! Thanks Immy, and very well done, looks like you are a fast learner, gorgeous work!😃

@@sharlotclark-george3922 Thank for the encouragement, Hope you get enjoy making you friends blanket for her special Birthday Sharlot, I find doing new things quite exciting and I don't think age should be a bar on trying new things, I would as my first project if I can find a simple pattern to crochet my granddaughter a poncho, this should be fun. might even try making squares into a poncho when I am a bit better at crochet, there are so many possibilities. My husband for m 71st birthday last week bought me a beginners macrame kit also something I have been wanting to do for a long time too.💖😊

I have subscribed to your channel many years ago and I must admit I kind of miss the somewhat shorter and more consistent videos on sustainability, books you have read, your thinking on various topics like veganism, working out, gardening etc. You have a beautiful mind and its always wonderful and inspiring if you share your ideas!

I definitely relate to losing your independence. I became ill with a chronic illness 3 years ago, and lost a lot my life, stopped work and studies, moved back in with my parents. In a few weeks I turn 30 and will finally be moving into my own place again. But its definitely a journey to find my way again and sort of discover who I am now with these new circumstances.

I love your yarn box! It allows greater flexibility than yarn bowls , and a beginning woodworker could make a load of them for Christmas gifts to friends and family. I am glad you’re having fun with crochet. You are really focused and your work looks fairly consistent. I just wanted to recommend to you books by Edie Eckman, whose work is justifiably popular and you’ve probably seen it in your library. I also love the book. Stitch n Bitch crochet: the happy Hooker by Debbie Stoller. You’ll learn a mega ton of crochet techniques with just this one book, and the projects are interesting and attractive to non-grannies of the millennial variety.

I’ve been on a very similar journey lately. I’ve been picking up skills and hobbies that I used to be “scared” of, things I thought I couldn’t do, I thought I would fail at or that I thought people might even judge me for.
I have dabbled in a few crafts, but I’m now getting back into cross stitching, knitting and crocheting and hoping to learn new skills in those areas. I would love to decorate my home with things I’ve made myself or things I’ve upcycled. I think cross stitching and embroidery would be a nice way of renewing old things as well, like curtains or table cloths.
I’ve started reading again as well, I used to love reading as a kid but school took the fun out of it (I know I’m far from alone alone in that). I used to think reading was pointless and a waste of time unless you learnt something new, so I’m trying to rewire my brain around that. Reading can be just for fun too! ☺️

Hi Immy and your lovely community… this Boomer turned 60 last year and WoW… I made some changes. Firstly, let me just say, not to scare anybody, but the bod changes a lot around this age. It takes much more time and knowledge to stay on top of health at this age. Just sayin’. Then, I decided to go back to uni by doing some post-graduate courses online. The last time I attended uni was 37 years ago, back in the day of blackboards, lecture halls, microfiche and typewriters. Coloured highlighters were the new thing back in the 1980’s, and I thought they were the cat’s pyjamas! Digital learning has changed everything, and I am on a vertiginous learning curve. I aspire to have your tech skill set. I love learning new things too, and I can certainly say that I am on a massive learning journey. This high school sewing teacher is loving your hands-on DIY journey. I’m excited to see your passion, skills, projects, and most of all… your enthusiasm for making things. Thanks for this great update, I’m stoked or the next chapter. Ⓜary💕🧵🧶

🎉🎉 Immy I am so glad you’re back!! I hear you as another (?) millennial who got more into crafting/making physical objects. In the last 5 years, I started knitting, ceramics, cooking and gardening! I work a desk job and there’s something that feels more “real” (not sure what the best word is here, this was the best I could do) about creating a tangible object, it’s a different sense of satisfaction than writing code lol. I think the other thing that makes it enjoyable is having it be decoupled from needing to be “the best”… like I can just improve at my own pace and it doesn’t really matter if I am just mediocre at it, if that makes sense!
You are seriously making me want to pick up crochet with all of these cool projects! I do still have some crochet hooks I haven’t used yet…

Interesting topic about the experience in the UK vs North America. I’ve been a dental hygienist for 11 years and it’s very well known that here in Canada we give much more sedation and prescription meds, but to be completely honest we only hear that as a benefit. I’ve spoken to many people that grew up in the UK that said it hurt so bad and was much harder to recover there, but they’re ok coming here because they don’t feel pain. So it’s interesting to hear your perspective where that makes you a bit iffy. And I mean that genuinely, not in a passive aggressive or condescending way. I’m glad I heard you say that.

💚 I fondly remember going to buy fabric and yarn with my mom in my childhood, she made me a few dresses and lots of blankets for friends. She crocheted a blanket that was very similar to what you've got going on here. It was very challenging and not her first project, so this is really impressive. One of my male cousins is in this phase right now, uses a ton of variegated yarn and loves it. That sunburst yarn is gorgeous! The pandemic was a time where my family was recovering from tough stuff including housing insecurity so the isolation had been familiar to us already. I want to start a no-dig garden with native wildflowers, collect rainwater and make more of my pantry from scratch! Despite all my research and planning, sourdough + tempeh + tofu still seem so intimidating but I'd love to eliminate the waste and gain valuable skills. Have you heard of Azure Standard? They're great for buying pantry staples in bulk (25 or 50 lb bags of beans, grains, flour, etc. - generally the best organic pricing I've come across if that interests you), check them out, they may be a good fit for your lifestyle. ☮

I am totally here for this series and everything you are going to discover! I am 35, and I really feel so much better now about pretty much everything in my life than I did, when I was in my 20's. I feel more confident, I know what matters to me, and what is not important/serving me in my life, I prioritise my health way more - basically I just feel that I am living in accordance with my own true values, which is an amazing feeling. So I think the 30's will have a lot of great things to offer you too ☺

Hi Immy! I really enjoyed the way your videos have evolved over the past few years. It feels like you've let a bit more of yourself shining through, and I enjoy the cooking, baking and gardening. I too am on the self-discovery after 30 train. I am retraining as a gardener after having focused on academics for most of my life. I have a master's degree, but my office job made me miserable, so the bit about schools focusing mostly on academics and not practical skills really resonated with me. Even the arts and crafts classes at school focused so much on process, that some of the joy of making stuff with yours hands was lost as a result. I've heard say that your thirties are all about rediscovering the things you loved doing as a teenager, and that's also kind of how it was for me. Being outside and creating things gives me this instant sense of accomplishment that sending e-mails and making deadlines all day simply does not. I'm very excited about the sewing content too, since I love sewing and it really made me think about what I actually like to wear and how much work goes into it. Also, being able to make trousers that are perfectly tailored to me is such a confidence booster. Doing your own alterations and repairs too are such great ways to be more sustainable with clothing. I really recommend taking a sewing class when you've learned some of the basics, because that really leveled up my skills, and it taught me how to fit a pattern to my body. Everything I make looks a lot more professional now, and I have a basic trouser pattern that fits me perfectly so I don't have to waste time or fabric making mock ups. (As you can tell, trousers were the thing I couldn't find ready made, at least not ones that fit me the way I wanted them to). Anyway, I'm excited to see what comes next!

Sure I made it to the end. Both cardigan and blanket look amazing. I like the 2 yellow squares on the sleeves.
My thirties are very turbulent despite the pandemic: we bought an old farmhouse with my boyfriend, had 2 miscarigies and recently gave birth to my second son 😍 in all of this I upped my sourdough game by 10levels despite using 50yo gas oven. Fermentation projects I cant get enough! Kombucha, yogurt, sourkraut, 3or 4 kinds of kimchi, miso and YOU inspired me to get a tempeh starter and give it a go! It was delicious, cant wait to make second batch with my misteps corrected.
Hobby I got back to was picking up a sketchbook, pencil, brush and watercolours 🤩 However I didnt get much time to indulge in it. Thanks to othet content creator I found a way to do it little by little.
Thanks for all your videos. The pandrmic ones were great too and I am looking forward this series as well.
    Bye Dita 🇨🇿

I loved turning 30! (32 now) I feel more confident in myself than I ever have and that makes me feel braver to try new things. Love to see you trying crochet, it's one of my favorite hobbies! 🧶

Wow!! Your cardy looks great for a first time and so cosy too. It’s interesting to hear you talk about rediscovering your self in your 30’s. As a woman in her 50’s I’d say this is a thing that will happen to you through each decade of your life. I definitely feel more liberated and more myself as I’ve gotten older. I’ve been a subscriber for a long time and have lived watching your videos evolve and follow you along on your adventure to America xx

Dear Immy, so happy to see another great video! I´m 38, living in US, Atlanta (lived in Czech Republic, Austria, Germany ...) so I do understand the "driving issues" here :-) I have twins and honestly I think I learned a lot through them too - not only cooking and baking (which I really enjoy) but started embroidery and water-color painting as well. Somehow needed something just for me. Wish you all the best!!! Pavlina

Hey, Immy! I’ve been following your channel for a very long time now and I love seeing you discover yourself more because I’m also at that stage in my life. I just turned 30 last year and I think some of the main things I’ve learned about myself is that I’m confident in myself (I was painfully shy and had no confidence as a teen/early adult), and that has opened so many doors for me. I learned that I’m actually an extrovert and I love meeting new people and making friends. And I’ve become way more interested in being involved in my community in the last few years. In terms of skills, I’ve become more crafty with sustainably decorating our home during the seasons and hadn’t realized I enjoyed that. I also learned that love cooking in my mid-20s, and now I’m developing an interest in baking bread, fermenting, and I want to learn to forage. Personally, I think being in my 30s is the best!

Thanks for the encouragement after my first 2 hours of messing up and restarting over and over 😂

You are just remarkable! I am so impressed with all the stuff you're making, and your perseverance. I mean, you are starting so many projects, complicated ones too, and actually *finishing* them! Well done. As for me, I'm starting to get back to some things I used to really enjoy and get excited about before I fell in the dark hole of divorce. I've been cooking from some cookbooks I haven't used in years, and getting back to making some homemade natural beauty items, like body butters, salves, lip balm. I'd forgotten how much I enjoy that. Maybe I'll get back to knitting again... I haven't done that in several years, but you are inspiring me! (PS, I'm almost double-30 now, but young at heart!)

There is something about the factory of life that leaves little room for passion projects or personal exploration. Once out of education even further or higher education it’s like that’s it. You have your career chip and there’s no deviating. All of that is of course a construct and that’s something you definitely explore when you’re at an age of reflection or life forces you into reflection. I think the pandemic accelerated that for a lot of people. I definitely share your excitement for new skills that foster independence.

I’ve always loved watching you - I miss seeing your old kitchen but I love seeing your cooking videos! And your voice is so soothing - you should really think about becoming an audio book reader - I would listen to any/every book you read (no matter the subject). Hey Immy. Your beautiful cardigan creation really inspires me, but I don't think I could ever find the patience for crochet. Talking about loss of independence really resonates with me too. I left the UK in 2017 to move to my (now) husband's country on the other side of Europe. I lost all of my confidence when I moved. Driving was a huge one for me too for the same reasons you said, but I also moved to a country where English is the minority language. My late 20s/early 30s journey so far has mostly revolved around learning the local language & working on my confidence to use it. I also had to side-step in my career, but was lucky to fall into something I really love. I'm coming to the end of a 2 year stint on mat leave and so excited to get back to work. Looking forward to hearing more about where your journey takes you. 💜

This is amazing! I've been crocheting for a while and it's really so therapeutic. I'm 36 and recently left my corporate job. I feel like I'm rediscovering myself again after kids and always being "on" in my corporate career. In the last 6 months I've learned how to make YT videos, launched a blog, learned Pinterest marketing, and outside of the home I became a substitute teacher and have been learning that. It's amazing how much time we waste feeling like we don't have time when we can accomplish so much in a short while. Stay curious friend! New Subscriber here. ❤️

I love the crochet videos!! I'm recently learning to crochet because I also wanted to learn new skills and create rather than consume. I would love to know more about what patterns you use and yarn you use/where you get it. I've been trying to thrift yarn or use shopgoodwill but find it hard to get lots of one color while staying low waste/sustainable. I'm praying for your discernment on the upcoming decisions and for your personal consolation/fulfillment!

Hi Immy, I am always so pleased to see more people embrace crochet. It is a craft that can literally only be done by hand and knowing this it always makes me cringe when I see so much of it for sale in high street stores, for such little money.
